3ivx MPEG-4 is a mature industry standard video compression system which enables the transmission and storage of video, which would otherwise be too large to store or transmit. 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0 for Mac OS X consists of MPEG-4 Video and File Format components for authoring and playback of MPEG-4 media. Compared to Apple MPEG-4, 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0 encodes up to twice as fast, producing the same quality video at half the size.

I tried 3ivx for decoding mpeg4 files. It works fine for divx and xvid, but I miss a lot of functionality. All I get is one tiny video filter bar I can slide.

I'm sticking with ffdshow for decoding my video files. It's small, fast and has a zillion options to try out. ffdshow also renders changes in realtime, whereas 3ivx will restart the video when you change something in configuration.

In regards to Aiken's: "Unfortunately I couldnt run WMP in fullscreen mode once I installed this on XP pro. So its not much use for viewing movies."
If you go into WMP9's tools:options:performance:advanced and make sure EVERYTHING is selected (which I'm sure something isn't (like using overlays) you'll have your fullscreen ability back. I give this codec a 3, it's ok as a fallback (when you can't find a decent codec pack) but I'd recommend www.k-lite.tk's codec pack over it any day, you can't beat the speed of the dedicated codecs in the aforementioned codec pack. I got choppies when I hadn't had them before (thankfully on a decent broadband connection, I'm not spending 30 minutes to download it :-p). Another thing, if you're running WinXP, I'd suggest staying away from Nimo's codec packs, they tend to cause conflicts and resource hogging. 3ivx outperforms Nimo, but not by much, I'd only suggest downloading it if you have a VERY fast machine and a dialup connection (kind of cutting off your nose to spite your face with that kind of thing.. or worse yet, you live so far in the boondocks not even DirecPC will get you decent downstream connectivity). Every day I thank whoever's up there looking after all of us for my DS-3 :-p that's my $.025 (2 1/2 cents for the decimally challenged).

    Very Nice Codec
does a nice job on XVID movies, not quite as good on DIVX, but you don't have to use it as the default DIVX codec.

Oh, when is the screenshot going to be updated?
