You can't protect your server on the cheap. A hardware firewall is a necessity, and don't spare the bucks. People spend many thousands of dollars on a server and then try to secure it with something like this.

Rock solid. Very modest GUI, but underneath that simplicity ther's a highly configurable firewall. EXCELLENT!

I've been using this for a few years now while periodically trying out what else is available. Highly configurable while being fairly simple to setup but I don't feel this is suitable for a novice. Rock solid and reliable. Excellent Support from 8signs. They have my blessing and dollars for it.
