This is the best packer out there. Heaps more professional than 7zip IMHO. Yes it's not free, but they give you lifetime updates for free. This was the reason for me buying it. I have used WinRAR for a long time now, and it has never let me down. Highly recommended!

Far better than 7zip. And it looks nice too (along with being able to use different skins).

I would like to be able to highlight and drag out the groups of files from an archive that I've highlighted ... as it stands, on my system, it's either 1 by 1 or all.

I agree, this is a top notch piece of software. I recently tried using 7-zip instead of WinRAR and the interface just doesn't compare to WinRAR's. This is a great program.
