Publisher's Description

AIMP Classic is a powerful audio player that allows you to listen to your favorite music with an outstanding sound quality. Its appearance resembles that of another classical audio player (Winamp), so you'll get used to it very quickly. It can also be customized with skins. The program includes a 18-band equalizer, a visualization window to display rhythmic visual effects and a playlist editor to organize your audio files. A nice fading effect makes your list of songs look like an endless music loop and a handy volume normalizing feature avoids drastic volume changes between tracks. Also, the player's main functions can be conveniently controlled by global hotkeys. Besides playing music, AIMP Classic features three extra utilities which also enable you to record any sound on your computer, convert audio files from one format to another and view or edit tags. AIMP Classic is based on the well-known audio engine BASS, so it's easy to connect new plug-ins (from the plug-in library included in the program) and expand the player's functionalities.

I'm back to using AIMP, for Windows 10 on home theater system. The available Unfavourable skin is just absolutely awesome. The LP skin is good as well for a smaller mp3 avi window. I don't bother with the EQ, I use the sound driver properties EQ for a universal EQ setting. However, AIMP's DSP 'Enhancer' feature is nice, just needs to be ticked up a tad to really enhance that midrange. With that and the sound EQ going into my receiver amp the listening experience is amazing. There are also other DSP settings such as Reverb and Echo, among others. Still working to get the Crossfade just right, and there is also a Skip Silence plugin available for download that I have yet to try. I did prefer the SRS Effects on Windows Media Player, but WMP on Windows 10 has issues with caching MP3 tags (I have so many MP3s) and the Crossfade noticeably skips a bit thru the process, and the native Windows 10 Groove Player just sucks, sucks, suck sucks, no real features whatsoever. Other than AIMP, the only other third party player I ever really liked was Audacious for Linux.

5 stars for AIMP and the Unfavourable skin together, the main AIMP skin lacks, even the darker one.

The music library is full of bugs, realtime update doesn't work as it should be, it's incredible slow, I tried it for long time as alternative to f2k, the sound quality is great, also the UI but the way the library works made me uninstall it and go back to f2k.

If I use software it has to look good and play well and this one does. Very much like Winamp, by the way which can still be used and found, it is not dead at all. But this one is very very good....

Stop right here. This is the one you want. I have tried every audio player on this site over the years and I always come back to AIMP. Xion is nice and I use it also, but AIMP is #1. The skins are great, and the all-in-one skins display album art. It is highly customizable. HOWEVER, some of the skins are more convenient then others, depending on what features you use most. Once I accidentally changed the speed/pitch and had to delete an .ini file to reset. Some of the skins are a bit dark. But if you want a no-nonsense player that isn't bloatware, this is the best solution I have found. You can save internet radio streams to the favorites, so it is a good streamer, too. It has an excellent built-in tag editor as well. Just right-click on any file in the playlist and click "file info".

I likes this audio player. It's quick, snappy and has nice sound options. However, I installed Aimp 2.x for now until version 3 has had a few more fixes. My only gripe is that the Reverb effect option is too strong at a low setting, so I don't use it. Do like the Stereo Enhancer though, along with my equalizer settings. The reverb problem might be better with version 3, being that Aimp 3 has its own audio engine as compared to version 2.

Not gonna get me away from Foobar2000 but a nice player nonetheless. On par with XMPlay in terms of functionality and audio quality, since WASAPI support was added. Doesn't have the versatility of Foobar (nothing does) but as a fast, lightwieght player with good sound and bug free code (none of which Winamp will ever be able to claim), it does very well. It also gets props for an author that actively devs his app and tries very hard to please, again something Winamp can't claim.

FOUR stars (I'd give it 4.5 STARS if I could but Foobar still gets a FIVE)

On sound quality, the total lack of bloat it wipes the floor with Winamp & more - Why use anything else is the question?

Under 7 Meg against Winamp's 15. - No nags to install the 'Pro' version with associated crap-ware also - Does not require your email, your favourite beer & your cat's name to install either.

I used to go back and forth between this and Winamp, and even though I use the DFX plugin, AIMP sounds far better, even without using any plugins. The only thing missing from AIMP would be the integration of displaying album art with all the skins, not just some. That would be nice. Also, a few things could be improved with the playlist management. Otherwise, this is one of the best media players out there, and so many are missing out on its really nice features. Definitely don't plan to switch media players anytime soon.

First and foremost, to the user below me, you can disable the splash screen from starting up, so AIMP starts faster. Hope that helps. As for me, I got the update from the previous build. I'm finding that it gets better and better with each version and now my DSP plugins are working great with this. It already sounds great, but I added DFX for an added boost. Even without DFX, AIMP sounds way better than Winamp, Foobar, MediaMonkey, iTunes or Windows Media Player 12, and I have tried them all before, foolishly. I think more people should check this out, because I think it's a lot better than some people give it credit for. I would love to see a lot of nice looking skins designed for AIMP3, but that's just minor. Technically, I find no flaws with this, and it does what it's supposed to do, and very well. AIMP is one of those well-kept software secrets that many people still don't know about. Maybe it's best that way.

Very nice player!

However it does not let you pause Live Streaming internet radio like Winamp can.

Also I find it a little slow in starting up mainly because of the plugins splash screen that always shows at the begining of starting the player.

Other then those 2 things I like this media player a lot. It seems very light weight which is great!

Another thing that is kind of sad is the AIMP Forum is not in English.

But for now at least my favorite media player is still Winamp.

This is a great media player and I think it's got Winamp beat, not necessarily by the number of features, but by the quality of sound. All of my music sounds great in AIMP. I just tried this and it's pretty good. For some reason though, it didn't work with one of my Winamp DSP plugins, Enhancer. Other than that, I do notice improvement in the sound, which is always good. Definitely not fond of the new skins that I saw, so hopefully, they'll revert back to using the ones from v.2. I love it, but it has bugs that need to be corrected before I fully upgrade to v. 3. Other than that, it's pretty good. AIMP deserves more credit than it gets, as a media player. Definitely recommend this one.

Very nice player. Has almost everything except very important for me thing - WASAPI output. I do not know why it's so hard to add this option, cause XMPlay uses the same BASS library but has WASAPI output, which gives significant improvement in sound quality on Windows 7. Awesome that is freeware and I hope it will for a long time!Thankyou for it.

2 little complains:-

AIMP looks good on 800x600 resolution but who is using 800x600 nower days, design is TOO little for 1280 x1024 and higher, fix pls.
I like too have a browserpanel (or tab) like 1by1 does but AIMP is still not support this, only playlists and just browsing folder(s) to create a playlist, add pls.

When both are implanted and fixed AIMP is flying sky high and beats all players outthere and to come...

@ roj - if you want to write my nick, write it PROPERLY...

ASIO did't improve quality, what many tested proved that ASIO and nonASIO output was bitperfect, I told you that many times...
If yours was differnt, simply you have problems with drivers or sys configuration...
It improve only delay, which is very important in recoding sth e.g. some audio studio

cant you simply understand this, or you are to blink cause you are fanboy or audiophile... ?

5/5

EDIT:
you hear difference = s***ty drivers or configuration...
nothing more to say...

test prove like I said that output data in ASIO = nonASIO = bitperfect
cause other API cant improve quality... it only low delays...

@ catchpole:

Digital is NOT digital in the PC world - at least the Windows world. Resampling is the order of the day (even Vista and Win 7 resample unless you use WASAPI) and therein lies the differences between a GOOD player and a GREAT player vis a vis audio quality. If it were indeed "digital is digital" there would be NO resampling and the signal decoded would be the signal played. It ain't. Get a clue about operating systems and how they process sound before displaying your ignorance - you're in the same camp as VMan_PL. I mean, c'mon: the Technet info is available to anyone who can read. You guys CAN actually read, right?

OK effort and that's good but it can't compete in the same league as Foobar 2000 or XMPlay. It's competent enough but bare bones when compared to the competition.

FOUR stars. That rating will potentially go higher if it evolves beyond the basics but right now it doesn't have anything that distinguishes it from the common herd (such as high quality audio output - and yes VirtualMan_PL, that was aimed at you). There's nothing to "understand" - I don't buy your rubbish. The proof is in the hearing and if it's audible on a set of Logitech Z-Cinemas, it's pretty obvious. Heck, my 17 year old son who doesn't know audio from squat can hear the difference ("whoa, that's more crisp") - and all he has is a set of old Monsoons hooked to an Asus Xonar DX. In short, can the "party line" and stop defending the indefensible. All you're doing is the equivalent of sitting there and claiming that the moon is made of Green Cheese. Ya wanna flog this? Let's take it to the discussion tab. I'll be happy to tear your meathouse down there. :)

Balderstrom

Balderstrom reviewed v2.60 Build 510 RC3 on Nov 4, 2009

Decent player (option-wise), yet the sound when Equalizer is enabled and presets are used leaves something to be desired -- when compared to WinAmp 2.95 and various comparable presets AIMP sounds tinny.

Minor Flaws:
(-) Unable to move the Equalizer from its left/right position (cannot be put underneath the main player).
(-) The TagList Editor cannot resize the FileList (which only shows a couple files) vs the huge amount of space taken up (below) for showing File Details + Cover Art.
(-) Inability to customize the Main Player's spectrum analyzer (Thin Bands, Dropoff, Firemode, etc etc.)
(-) Bitrate display is constant (average): no display update for VBR files.

Personal Preferences:
Prefer Winamp's customizable Windowshade mode: which can windowshade each gui element (player, playlist, equalizer...).

Major Flaws:
(-) Sound (Equalizer) is worse than WinAmp (2.95) from 2003 (Especially noticeable with the "Rock" preset among others).
(-) Very Limited Visualization options, and no customization.

The Good:
(+) The player itself looks good.
(+) Functionally it works well, and the interface is intuitive.
(+) Tabs for playlists.

Perhaps it's bad presets, but there's definitely something wrong with the sound when the Equalizer is used. This would be a very competitive player if at least the sound issue was resolved.

For now I'll stick with WinAmp 2.95 and J.River's Media Jukebox 12 (some of the coolest visualizations I've seen). Perhaps users don't care much about Visualization options, but the lack of options and customization in that area make this player seem incomplete to me.

This is a wonderful application. It works well and does a lot of things other similar applications will not do.

However, I do not recommend that an inexperienced user, or one that is not willing to experiment with it to find out what it will do try to use this one. It can be difficult to figure out what to do. If you are one of the above, try Spider Player or Screamer. They, too, are excellent but easier to use.

For me, this application is a 5. For the inexperienced, it would be a 3, maybe a 4.

@VirtualMan_PL:

OK, now we're into lack of knowledge: yours.

How do you think ASIO achieves lower latency? By bypassing Kmixer, which is the Windows Kernel Mixer. WASAPI does essentially thye same thing under Vista and while the Vista audio subsystem is completely different form XP's, I will not go into that for the sake of brevity. What does Kmixer do? It resamples the audio stream and the time for the resampling results in the highrer latency. If you talk directly to the hardware, latency is reduced as much as possible – and the audio stream is not tampered with since it isn't resampled. That is exactly what ASIO and WASAPI do. Furthermore, the results of the resampling are AUDIBLE if you're using a competent sound card and speakers. I have:

M-Audio Revolution 7.1
Asus Xonar DX

Both support ASIO. I use those with Monsoon Planar Media 14s which are not your average multimedia speaker system and Grado SR80s (easily good enough to be able to hear the results of resampled audio). Always remember: it's not about the latency but rather the elimination of resampling.

I use ASIO4ALL with my Logitech Z-Cinema Advanced Sound System which do not use a soundcard but output digitally via USB – essentially to an out-of-PC DAC built into the speakers. Even there, the differences between using DirectSound and ASIO via ASIO4ALL are IMMEDIATELY noticeable, to the point where my 16 year old son can hear the differences and comment on them.

I will agree with one comment:

Creative soundcards are poser garbage. Always were and always will be. Apart from mediocre hardware design, their drivers were, are and will remain pure junk. As someone who cares about the audio in his PC, I'm FAR too intelligent to own one of their products. I certainly don't need to Google any tests as I've been involved with PC audio since the AWE64 and all of my views are based on personal time-tested experience – not stuff I read on the web.

To cut a long story short:

ASIO is superior in audio reproduction to DirectSound by a healthy margin as it creates a bit-perfect copy of the source material by bypassing Kmixer. Any claims to the contrary are at best misinformed and at worst completely stupid.

As an aside, converting MP3 to FLAC is similarly plain stupid. Anyone knowing ANYTHING about PC audio formats knows that there has already been audio quality loss by encoding to a lossy format (MP3) and that quality WILL NOT RETURN when that MP3 is encoded to FLAC. Elvis has already left the building.

And to extend this to the topic of this player, AIMP is STILL missing quality audio components, to whit:

ASIO and / or WASAPI output drivers.

THREE stars.

and converting MP3 to FLAC

If you can't hear the difference between ASIO / WASAPI and the results of resampling through KMixer there are only two possibilities:

1) Your equipment is not up to the job

OR

2) You have a significant hearing problem

Stop trying to defend the indefensible by spewing nonsense.

Got rid of the bloated Winamp.. and installed this AIMP :)

I't rocks . .and faster! .. Winamp was lagging :(
So will just use this proggy and Foobar2000 now :) - both of them rock

One thing i liked about Winamp - when it is playing VBR - it was showing the range (exampe 192 - 320) .. and when, say, mp3 was playing it was going back and forth in the range...
Here it's just showing the Average bitrate ...
Which is ok also.. (just didn't mind it "going back and forth' as Winamp did...

Or is it better like this? .. just to say for example: "average bitrate 229 kbps" .. as it is in AIMP

How about both maybe? ... to have it showing the "average bitrate" (as it is now already) .. and to add somewhere so it "shakes" / "going up and down in values" showing kbps while VBR is playing?
Maybe a suggestion to the Author of the program?

What do you think?

P.S. - Way better and smoother than Winamp though! ;) .. 5 stars!

Nowhere do I see any indication of ASIO or WASAPI support, both of which are must-haves for any claims of superior sound quality as far as I'm concerned. Any info on this?

A neutral 3 pending answers.

Virtual_ManPL:

RUBBISH!

Feed the output form your system using a quality sound card either digitally or via analog to either a half-decent sound system, quality headphones or decent multimedia speakers (NOT the standard Logitech or Creative Labs dreck) and it's impossible to miss - unless you're hearing impaired. There is a reason that professional musicians bypass the ressampling of kmixer to produce their work and it's not just latency. To deny the obvious audio quality boost is sheer stupidity - plain and simple.

Also, no gapless playback warrants a THREE - that's a ridiculous omission in this day and age.

playlist suggestion:
Usually you don't have to exactly hit the 1px sized spot in the bottom right corner to be able to resize a window both horizontally and vertically.

main window suggestion:
1. Well.. there's a lot of space wasted - that is if you don't use visualization - which probably most people don't. And if you do you probably go for fullscreen visualization. I'd rather have a bigger song timer display.
2. Also I couldn't find an option to turn off the vertical animation showing information about the currently playing song. I don't mind having that information there but I'd prefer having it static like in "not moving!". You might even want to completely hide that information if the playlist window is opened since the information is displayed there as well. And the playlist automatically jumps to the currently playing song if the main window is selected (good).

Love this and with each release toward 2.5 final I like it even more.

There are dozens of good music players around these days, winamp, foobar to name but two... and don't get me wrong they are good players. But to me, Aimp looks good, has all the functionality I need in an easy to find way - looks good out of the box - (to me) and thanks to the BASS engine sounds wonderful. I have tried using the MAD playback engine with this and like for like, it just sounds no where near as good.

Now that the player is becoming increasingly popular there are some very attractive skins out there (although personally I find the default one plenty good enough)

Its small to download, consumes few resources, has multi-playlist support, good eq, great extra toold like tag editors and transcoders.. all in this is far and away the best player I've ever used.

Not sure why people would want to use this. If you want interface and features, get WinAMP which is free. If you want the "best" music player around, including skins, plugins etc, get foobar2000. AIMP uses the BASS sound library, and for some reason it does deliver far better sound quality than Winamp and other players. As for "digital is digital", no. Lossy digital compression is not the same as lossless digital. However that has more to do with the compression of the MP3 than the player.

This version of AIMP did a few weird things for me, it wiped out all my setting and attached the playlist to the bottom of the player so it cannot be moved. I found those changes strange and hope they go away with the final version is out.

Here is the issue and yes it's relevent: The site has 2 language settings Ru and Eng. however when english is selected the plugin descriptions remain in Russian and the plug in manager is not much help. The forum is the main place for help and the english pages are limited.

With future minor bug fixes addressed and an expanded english forum folders this could very well be a top contender

I have not tested the current 2.5 release candidate, but installed version 2.11 a week ago.

I instantly liked the look, sound and small footprint of 2.11. Once you use this for about an hour you will see how truly intuitive this player is. A week later you are truly impressed with every aspect of this player. Not to mention being extremely friendly on system resources.

Mind you I am not a big skins and visualization guy, I am all about sound quality and functionality. So I cant really comment on the eye candy side of things.

As far as sound quality and functionality, there is not a better player out there right now. There isnt even a close second. This is the best audio player in years. It took me all of 5 days to uninstall my former favorite player.

Rarely am I truly impressed with an audio player. The design team at AIMP has created a true gem. Hopefully as time goes on AIMP continues with their intuitive design and commitment to sound quality.... without turning into a bloated waste of disk space like so many other good players have done over the years.

Thank you AIMP!!

I tried the last version and it's library interface was a nightmare. Foobar has an excellent gui, is way more powerful and just plain works better. Yeah, about a 1000 times better in fact.
And xmplay still is just a better all around player of audio files including streaming radio stations. Xmplay even tells you when there is an update for a plugin (too bad foo can't do this).
I would use soundbase over this and soundbase sucks too.
But for just playing music from a hard drive NOTHING can touch foobar and it's extremely easily configured gui.

sooti

sooti reviewed v2.09 on Jan 18, 2008

very light on resources, great built in crossfader, nice GUI which looks like it should be heavy but somehow is very light on resources unlike winamp5, nice library with album covers etc..

for playing music on the computer, this is a must have, and much better then itunes, foobar, winamp etc, cuz it has all the good in those players without the resource hogging...

but for managing the library and copying to my 'creative zen vision m:', i still prefer mediamonkey, cuz of the ease of sorting the library and syncing to my player.

but for playing music, this is a wonderful player.

If someone can point me to an English version of the site with explanations of the features in that language, I'll then evaluate it. Until then, it gets a neutral 3 because I don't understand Russian.

Great stuff its my default player does all i need and sounds great ... I hope it never turns into a all in one bloat media player like the majority of all other players ... keep it lean devs ... :)

changelog

- Equalizer filter bug was fixed
- Some small bugs were fixed

also a Foobar user for some time now... i found this player really interesting.. i like it better than winmap... the ppl from nullsoft still cant see the importance of mutliple playlists/ playlist tabs... i like about this player that i can customize the playlist string and many other things... the only things that are missing and keeps me on Foobar 2000 are the lack of kernel streaming output and the album art plugin.... would like to see these plugins in AIMP... it's certain that the player is on a good track to over take winamp and rivals... the memory print and CPU are verry low manwhile winamp is getting overbloated which every release.

Been a loyal Foobar user since the beginning, but this is kinda nice and sounds great too. Going to play with it for a little bit. I don't however see the option to rip of convert to FLAC, but I guess this is coming

this one has the same impact over Winamp as The KMPlayer had over other video player.

Good Job - my favorite now, and replaced Quintessential Player and Winamp on my computer.

The BASS library had the best quality sound ever in any Music player and XMPlay and AIMP2 used it. This two player are my favorites.

Dixon_Butz you noob, try the software before making a stupid review - this software acutally is original, yes it looks like winamp - but it works differently - and thank g*d for that.. its so nice versus winamp..

It's an OK player. However I see this player like I see Winamp. You need a handful plug-ins for this player, to equal to do what JetAudio does. Of course if your not a hardcore music person like me. Then this player will suit you.

xapaox

xapaox reviewed v2.07 Beta on Oct 29, 2007

what's new?
I use this in parallel with winamp and xm player, i like this for a little better sound for mp3, nice skins but not have "show what i'm listening" for IMs (like xm player) and don't read *.cue files for my non-stop mp3s, not bad, i use frequently.
4 stars anyway

And| reviewed v2.07 Beta on Oct 29, 2007

Why no changelog? :(

Reason for 5 stars is that I am using this parralel with foobar, and I really love it.

I have taken the same journey to Aimp as Netean has, Except I couldn't bring myself to try Foobar.
I was pretty happp with XMPlay but aimp exceeds it in ease of use, skins(need some more though!), and setup.
Very, Very impressed, especially considering the short development time!

i've been looking for a great player/playlist manager/tagger/organiser for ages now.
I used to love QCD/QMP, but it was slow in development and getting a bit bloated, then I switched to XMplay which is lovely, fast, sounds great, but default skin is awful and playlist/tagging/management doesn't really exist.

Then I moved to foobar, which looks terrible, sounds ok, but is great for playlist management.

Now I've found aimp I am very happy. Sounds brilliant (has the same BASS playback system as XMplay) - great skin, tagging and management are superb..

All in all, one of the best players i've ever used.
Better than Sonique, Winamp, WMP, itunes (what isn't) Spider player, QCD, Foobar..

I love this player now.

Been using for a few days on Vista with no issues at all. It's a solid little player that reminds me of what Winamp used to be. If it continues at this pace it is potentially my new default player. Screenshot does not do it justice (the newer skin is much cleaner)

drekec

Realy great.. Why rate it low for stupid things like asking a question ??

I especially like that it shows the name of my album above the music.. maybe simple, but unique, and I love it :D

It also loads my MP3z damn fast in vs foobar or winamp.. So thumbs up!

And|

And| reviewed v2.0 Beta 2 on Sep 8, 2007

What a nice surprise! A player that kinda looks like WinAmp, but is far from all the bloated items WinAmp has been victim to.

AIMP2, features the best playlist I have ever seen. If you add an album, it writes the album name in orange, and the files in the album underneath. I only see one problem with this player as it is... not enough skins.

Oh well, the standard skin is actually not bad.

oh, just found another little thing just now. No 24bit playback...

Winamp, and this has alot incomon. Though winamp, does have a shoutcast browser, for both music and video. This one does not. For those of you, who think winamp is getting old, and why bother with this one. May i direct your attention to QMP, or QCD. QMP is a winamp clone, that is compact, and has a skin browser. Which winamp does not. QCD is more like winamp. QMP will replace QCD some day, when they decide to release the final.

Jetaudio, is a WMP replacement. Works rather well. Jetaudio, has a streamer, for those who like to run their own radio station. Media Center; Catalogs your audio files. and a player, wich does just that. Jetaudio does more then all of these programs.

This program lacks the hide feature. It doesn't actually hide itself, to the system tray, which is what I like.
