Why on earth did they make it so hard or impossible to import your own favorites file on the new AOL 10.1. I've had my favorites file forever & just keep adding to it & it get's re-import it again & again as I change or rebuild the AOL software. But now it seems to be impossible. As far as I'm concerned the " My favorites feature" & auto suggesting e-mail addresses feature's are the most important features AOL has going & the most important reason I have for using AOL! It makes it easy to get to an address quickly without typing it. Now they've decided to make it impossible to import your preexisting file, What!. It's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard of, making you're favorites hard to impossible to upload. I can't believe it's not even easier to do now & to set up & use now. All the Favorites that you've compiled & maintained it should be obvious you'd need that & it should be easy. I feel particularly insulted because I've waist-ed a lot of time trying to figure it out to do it & I know they must know what they've done & they probably have an ulterior motive for it! What other reason or why else would they screw that up. It's like their taking their best thing, which AOL's got going & removed & reneged on it. You'd think they would want to keep customers not loose them! So AOL, I hope you're listening. I've been a member for 15 years & I think when I speak I it means something & I've been around the world & thru everything with AOL both good & bad for 15 years & I believe I'm right about the "Favorites Heart Tool" being the single most important feature AOL has ever had going & this new "Favorites Places Import Problem" makes AOL very close to being worthless when you take that away. Who ever it was that designed this new version making it impossible to import Favorites, instead of making it "easier than ever", should be FIRED Immediately, if not sooner & I hope He or She will be. In the mean time if there's anyone who knows a way to do this that can explain it to me in plain English, that's" how do I import my favorites file into this new AOL version 10.1, if that's even possible, Apparently AOL could care less if you figure it out, even there explanations on how to do it don't work, what, are they laughing at us, is it a game ??? , but I would appreciate if someone has it figured it out, if you could let me know.. Thank You, dk405@aol.com

You have to use it to fully understand. AOL is the best All in One client! Congrats AOL on the AOL Desktop for Windows :) Mac's version is great as well. The Windows version to me now is way better and more customizable.

As an all in one option it's not bad for AOL users to step out of the usual AOL program format.
The only thing that would make it better for the AOL users is to import favorites from an AOL PFC file. The online favorites never totally load because I have over a thousand plus. I'm a genealogist & I need all my favorites available to me & The AOL desktop doesn't meet my needs for using my favorites. I've told them this in AOL beta feedback & got an odd answer from one of the team as to why import from a PFC even after I stated my need for it. After trying to import my AOL favorites 5 times it stopped giving me the unable to import message & did it. Everything else about the program is fine (for aol users on broadband it's fine)... Oh, one more thing, the fonts in email are limited even though I have a ton of fonts on my system.

Openride was a horror. Uninstalled that beast immediately. Desktop is definately better on the systems resources. I like having my Gmail account in there as well. If I could only read my AOL mail in the damn thing. Disappointed by AOL once again. If I could get an answer on how to fix that problem I would use it. I'll stick to Gmail for now.

AOL refuses to die as long as they still have a revenue stream from all the adware noobs are willing to tolerate for all the pretty eye candy. AIM is a prime example.

AOL 9.0 still refuses to uninstall completely from a friend's PC.

I reiterate: AOL has always been spam central and is known for its deceptive business practices:
----------------------------------------------
How many products do you know of that "uninstall completely"? And a "friend's PC"? Give me a break. How's about your PC? Spam central? You'll get spam from other ISP's too. Set your filters up properly, don't go to suspicious sites and you'll get little or no Spam. Deceptive business practices? Yep, in the past, no doubt about that. Nowadays though and for a few years now, no. I'm betting that like many who slam AOL, like you for instance, you haven't even tried the AOL products you talk about.

If I want my buddy list open, I will open it...Sorry AOL but you've had your day in the sun.. its time to move on and let someone else be the top dog.
------------------------------------------------
Nope, they're not kidding. Lots of folks like software like this where items are open simultaneously. Don't want to open something, then don't, but you and others have the option. AOL has not had its day in the sun; not yet, anyway, and they're not going to move on, so get used to them being here. I rate the AOL Desktop at a 4 because it still has some work to be done before it's completely ready for prime time.

AOL's doing a great job catching up. To call this program a program for only "newbies" or people who don't know much about computers is false. I've used PCs and Macs for years and this program is amazing because I don't have to open a mail program, then a IM program, then a web browser and then have to deal with all that cluttering up my desktop. All I need to do is open this program and click the icons within the program and I'm where I want to be. It simples things rather than opening each app. individually and taking up space. For example: if you want to check the sports scores and check your e-mail. Open the program, click the Mail icon then click the Sports icon. Newbies to the web will love how easy it is to get from place to place and experienced people will appreciate the fact of getting from one area to the next without loads of clutter on your desktop and the need to not have to open multiple programs to get to where or what you want.

On a side note: I honestly don't see why people are allowed to "Review" a product without even trying it. A review is supposed to help people decide whether they want it and all I see is people bashing AOL for the past history and past apps. I appreciate those who do "real" reviews rather than just come on here and bash the company and call it a "review" then accuse those who like the product of "working for AOL" or whatever company they don't like. I love this site, but I find it very difficult to really want to read the reviews here, if it is all non-sense.

Actually, there may one day be a need for this product in the future-- assuming it's done right-- as AOL is going down a better path:

bundled voip, improved portal, improved entertainment offerings.... they still have a ways to go, but they're improving as time transpires.

All in all, if i was running them, i would just partner up with Google-- much faster and cost-effective to achieve their goals alongside them.

I cant believe AOL is still releasing this stuff...Of course I fail to see why anyone still uses it as a primary ISP. They never got it right nor will they ever. I guess it's freedom of choice..far be it from me to say anything to folks who feel they must use AOL to access the net. (I threw my security blanket away when I grew up.) sorry that slipped out

Well I agree with the person below me. I remember my problems with AOL. AOL was my first ISP. Back then AOL intergrated itself in to windows explorer, and IE, and MSNetworking agent.

When I uninstalled AOL, it had crippled my system (computer). I dread the thought of what this will do.

Caution: IF YOU VALUE YOUR COMPUTER, DON'T TOUCH THIS. IT MAY CRIPPLE YOUR COMPUTER, WHEN YOU UNINSTALL IT. TAKING WITH IT: IE, WINDOWS EXPLORER, MS NETWORKING, ETC.

There is no clutter or unwanted programs installed. If you do a custom install you have the choice of what gets onto your machine. Those that are throwing out insults probably have not even tried it.

People seem to forget that this is still beta.
Aolsoftware.exe isn't the fast start option. It is for the AOL icon located by the clock on the system task bar. All AOL clients put an icon on the taskbar. If you have a problem with this using up memory. Use CCleaner and take it out of your start up list. But if you take it out of your start up and don't get the AOL icon on the task bar, you won't be able to get to some of the features of Helix as quickly. After using AOL for years, I know how to work around these stated problems & have no trouble with this Helix program. I found it to be a good all in one solution for the people that use AOL. I had no problems or any thing left over after running the uninstall & have no idea what people are talking about with stuff left on the computer.
I've looked all over my hard drive for left overs and found nothing but the install files in AOLDownloads folder in a subdirectory under My documents & HP-owner in the applications folder.
I kind of like that, I can burn it to a CD if I wanted. Just delete it if it bothers you.
Helix is easy to use for previous AOL users. If AOL isn't your cup of tea, then don't use it. Good grief people, get a grip on your emotions, It's a beta for goodness sake.

This company needs to be bought and destroyed as a public service.

echohead reviewed v2.0.26.1 Beta 1 on Jul 27, 2007

the "download" on this and AOL's site may seem small...which is because after clicking it you have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to download the actual install files.

one of the options when installing helix is to have it in memory constantly so it can load faster. after unchecking this option, i found out that it doesnt work: aolsoftware.exe remains in constant memory no matter what you do.

right now i have 4 tabs open in firefox. it is using 20 MB less than helix.

after trying to close the AOL explorer window that was open within helix (and not being able to, despite the [x] button indicating that i should), i tried to open a new tab so i could navigate to this site. helix opened up 50 additional tabs, and took my desktop on a magical sleigh ride. i had to ctrl+alt+del to close out helix.

helix, like nearly all of AOL's other products, installs the Viewpoint spyware/adware. also like AOL, helix has problems with javascript and displaying links in their email.

although helix doesnt use AOL's free antivirus/antispyware scanners, i think i should warn people of something in case this changes in the future...i have had to uninstall AOL from several home computers because users complained that AOL has been flagging the popular torrent client "utorrent" as a trojan when it clearly is not.

and to yanike:
yes, helix is different from both IE and firefox. both IE and firefox dont crash when you open a new tab. both IE and firefox running together use less memory than helix. helix doesnt support addons like firefox does, but like IE still suffers from IE-related vulnerabilities.

do not try this product. its just AOL in disguise.

Excellent Beta and best program AOL has ever made. This program is a must get and try for any AOL user or person thinking about giving AOL another try. If you need an AOL-In-One client that's up to today's tech world with tabbed browsing, tabbed email and tabbed IM, then AOL Helix is what you need. Very simple to set up and easy to run. I've tested everything you can think of and nothing comes close and as easy as AOL Helix. It's a combination of all the great things out to day in one and doesn't use that much memory at all to run.

One thing about the tech world today, they are hooked on Firefox and other Mozilla products. Which they will tell anyone to use them. I for one have tested out all products and Mozilla does have some good products, but they are not the best products out.

A lot of my suggestions and others went into it. This and AIM was the only products that worked correctly.

AOL scratched off OpenRide :(

This product and AOL Suite are no longer supported by AOL.

Well AOL create a good deal, The only bad thing about it it does slow your computer down and uses a lot of resourse, And i have a pretty fast computer, p4-3.4ghz-2gb ram, and is still uses a lot of resourse, If it did not use that much resourse, then the application will be kind of cool..

This is the single best product AOL has ever released. It has less bugs than any other AOL product and is also faster and more secure than any other AOL software. This product deserves a 5 considering how huge of an improvement it is over previous AOL versions.

Open Ride SUCKS. Its a pain in the neck to use, and it makes your email available for anyone to see who happens to pass by.

VERY INSECURE.

PLUS it slows down your computer and it is very hard to get rid of.

I love how you advertise for AOL. Your comments attract others to consider giving AOL a try. For me, I've been a loyal AOL customer for years, not an employee.

I'm giving AOL Openride a 3 because I do like the interface and idea of it all, but so far I am unable to use the program. Everytime I install it my computer's processor runs at 100% and drags the computer to a halt basically. After I uninstall the program my computer runs fine. It slows my system down regardless of whether Openride is open or not, even when I change it to not load at startup. It's a very strange occurence, but I have seen others who have the exact same thing happen to them. So, for now I would recomment sticking with a version fo AOL 9.0 until they get these issues corrected.

The new beta is out and AOL has done it. You just have to see it for yourself. My opinion has definitely changed. Dial-Up and Broadband users will enough this.

AOL OpenRide is the best All-In-One browser out PERIOD. Welcome to the new America Online!

I think it's a fair program so far if you only use your aol main screen name, because it's a mess when it comes to use additional aol screen names.
You simply can retrieve e-mails. It goes on and off. The software is kind of heavy sometimes, lags often and it still reads you on when you actually signed off. Hope they fix it soon.
Also screens should be optional for media and messenger screens.

Actually, I think it is a great improvement to what AOL has used for ages as a so called Browser.

Note: It DOES takes a while to warm up to the Four-Pane concept especially @ 1024x768 resolution.

So far so good. I really like the way it looks and feels. I had more software crashes with aol 9.0 so far openride has not given me any problems. I found 9.0 to be bloated, I have an older computer and I was reluctant to even install 9.0 on it because I knew from past experience that it seems to drag my computer resources down, but since I've installed openride I've uninstalled 9.0 and my computer seems like it's running a lot faster. And openride is more responsive than 9.0. I can open it and close it more quickly than 9.0. No offense to anyone but I think people are a little uncomfortable with this new look because we're use to aol being a certain way (made for dummies) but once you get started using openride and familar with how it works I think you'll like it.

The one thing I don't like about it is the fact that it is open to anyone to just use. Aol is well known for it's strict parental controls but in the way that this new software is fashioned anyone can get on the internet. I would suggest aol to still keep the sign in option mandatory.

This is great in many ways, but bad in others.

It looks super, and the way you switch between components works really well... other internet suits should learn from this. But I must give it a three because you can't use pop3 email accounts with it and the IM only uses AOL. I only know one person who uses AOL the rest use MS for IM. If they could let you set up pop3 accounts and use MSN IM as well I would use this.

The only other thing that nags me is the name, America on-line I mean. I'm British living in Germany, why would I want to use something called America on-line? How many Americans would want to use a product called Russia on-line? or Iran on-line? Yes I trust America with security and privacy as much as the other above mentioned countries.

Apart from that this is great, aol mail client rocks, much better than OE. Open up this product... don't lock people into using AOL mail and IM.

I know AOl's garbage but there's one thing I like about it. It's that it looks good...

Not that this factor fills in for the poor functionality and all, but even looks deserve a bit of credit

terminalx

terminalx reviewed vBeta 3 on Aug 30, 2006

this really isnt that bad and if you already use aim and aol mail its all integrated which is nice...the browser isnt anything special but it responds pretty quickly... what would make it better if you had a choice of what panes you could have open...the media center pane is always open and I cant imagine someone would need it at all times... unfortunately since they are making this free...there is probably going to be ads everywhere...but only time will tell...as of now it seems clean and I dont see any "extras"...my only complaint is the system information keeps crashing everytime it is opened...not sure if its just something on my pc or if others are experiencing this behavior as well...

seriousily if you cannot be a real tester and just badmouth the product before even trying dont bother posting...there is enough trolls on here already...there is no malware... at this time (maybe it will change due to their track record but damn give them a chance as this is a new direction for them and I feel everyone deserves another chance) as it only installs the application and the connectivity software...for aol its not bad and its functioning...its still in beta so go on their boards and tell them how to make it better...saying its crap and it sucks is not a review...its just mud slinging and makes you look less intelligent with your "creative" vocabulary

This is not really true. You need to sign in to use Mail and People.
I for one will never use OpenRide unless they make the panes switchable.

You must be using an AOL screenname not just an AIM name to download this POS. So sign in is required at least to get the damn program..

I wanted to hate it - but I dont. If you like having quick access to the things you do most online then its a very cool concept and truly something new.

It is a beta so its not without its faults but so far I am enjoying it. Yeah I know - hard to believe AOL does something cool and different that works , but I think they did.

I thought that AIM Triton was their worst product yet, but I was dead wrong. The Streamliner is absolutely the worst so far. It's very difficult to use. I could not close any child-windows in the program. I cannot minimize them either. During the first launch of the program, my computer froze!

AOL needs to stop trying and sell the company to Microsoft.
