I have just uninstalled AOL 9.1 for the last time.
It constantly crashes and you recieve a canned aol message that if you see this error message repeatedly restart your AOL software. Repeatedly to me was several times a night. Then Windows started recovering from serious errors. I tried installing 10.0 thinking perhaps that versions solved the problems of it's predecesor. Not so I ecperienced the same problems. AOL tech support is useless. The advised me to turn off my Mc Afee System Guard, which solved my inability to sign on to the software, but left my PC unprotected. I perforemd a clean uninstall of all AOL software and went back to 9.0 which never gave me a problem. Now I am getting notices that the upgrade to 9.1 is "Mandatory" I think it is time to find a new provider

AOL 9.1 is now the available upgrade on the AOL server. I upgraded my AOL 9.0 security edition to the new 9.1 version & had some problems.
But first I need to address the paying for AOL comment. If you have a broadband connection you do not have to pay AOL anything and you can use the software as long as you have an AOL screen name or AIM account.
With that being said, here is my review of the AOL 9.1 software.
The download took a while even on cable internet.
AOL install went smooth & I did like the install options that let me do a custom install.
Being able to surf without signing on the AOL service is a nice option, but on broadband it's not something I would really do.
Opening the email window now shows all my email folders without using the manage email selection.
Running AOL 9.1 after the install wasn't bad, it seemed to be rather quick to respond. Then I restarted my computer & signed back onto AOL & left it sitting while I had dinner.
When I returned to the computer & brought it back from being idle, it was a different experience.
My screen took a long time to recover from being idle. My hard drive kept acting like it was loading things. After my machine stopped doing all that stuff, it wasn't as quick as the first run of AOL 9.1 was.
When I minimize this version to use my other browser or check mail in outlook express. I click to maximize AOL again and it isn't a pretty sight. Sometimes when maximizing, the AOL toolbar doesn't populate with all the text and icons & I have to restart the application.
So, I returned to the AOL 9.0 security edition after a few hours of dealing with the upgrade.
The uninstall went smooth without any trouble.
I don't recommend upgrading to this version of AOL unless you have a dual core processor and 2 gig of ram or more.
My machine has 1 gig ram and a 2.41 ghz processor.
I rate AOL 9.1 with a 3 because of the options it gives on install, nothing more.

I didn't try this, so i can't bash the software itself, but we all know the deal with aol software. Like other users with a laugh- leading ISP? I can only judge by the 100 some odd people in my address book. And only 2 have a AOL.com address. So i guess you can call it a stretch to say they are still a leading provide. Did a google search to find more stats, but nothing came up. Funny the day they annouce a big layoff they still release a product. And it might be the lowest rated product i ever saw here at Betanews. 2.0, thats pretty bad.

This has to be the funniest description about AOL I've ever heard. A "leading" internet service provider? How many people still waste their time (and possibly money) with AOL?
