I give this a 5-Star because of it's smooth integration with my Vista system. It is not bothersome to use and has adequate protection without using large resources that slow the computer.
You can test it's ability to protect by scanning with any number of online detection sources and see if they find anything worth fussing over.
Most people's computer activities don't require the ultimate protection, so this user friendly program works just fine.
Ian "Gizmo" Richards wrote in his newsletter today:
"Security research company Trend Micro recently reported that of the top 100 infections in the U.S. in 2008, approximately 63% were caused by downloading and running programs. E-mail-borne infections accounted for only 3%, while the exploitation of security flaws in products was responsible for a tiny 1.7% of PC infections."
AVG combined with a-squared malware protection works well for the common user who don't take on too much risk and are careful where they go on the internet and what they download.

The only thing AV Comparitives proves (many years after the fact is well known,) is that ALL antivirus sucks, and I mean that in a polite fashion. It would be far better to train users to not install crap and run in userland than download and install this software which provides a false sense of security.
ALL antivirus software sucks and all have too many false positives or poor detection rates. ALL.

as pointed out below AVG doesn't come up very good in AV Comparatives tests.
Not for me.

I used the free version for years, after Norton's bloat and poor detection rates. (I think Symantec recently improved a lot.) I won a copy of the paid AVG Internet Security about a year ago. It's been good for me, and a number of people I know, although I haven't done a side by side test against eicar sigs with other programs. Ver. 8.0.200
