The DVD player is free but comes bundled with AVS advertising for other AVS products. This 80+ MB installer come with AVS video converter which is not free so uncheck at install.

The DVD player itself is somewhat useful.

AFAICT, any download from AVS4YOU.com is not freeware, but subscriptionware. All AVS4YOU software have in their EULA "You may: 1. Use one copy of AVS4YOU software or any of its components and all upgrades and updates on a single computer for any period for which you have purchased a subscription (typically 1 year or Unlimited)." The only AVS DVD Player that is freeware is downloaded from AVSMEDIA.com (http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/). My rating is for that version.

I had thought this product was no longer being developed? Does this new version offer anything substantial?

I've used it in the past and it is cool as a freebie, thus the score.

I'm just sort of wondering what is up with the app though in terms of new code.

    Thanks

Excellent FREE alternative to PowerDVD and other commercial PC DVD player's

Could be better if it would be faster starting the DVD (a small bar takes some seconds whenever a DVD is loaded) and could use less CPU resources while playing.

but the potential is definitely there.
