Updates are still available for the earlier version of Ad-Aware, but I agree that version 2007 is poorer in quality.
I've been looking for a replacement, and am currently testing Malwarebyte's product. It's free, unless you want protection always running in the background (which I don't).
So far, it seems nice. Simple UI, and is able to clean out some items that others miss.
Reviewing 0095.0000 (Jul 1, 2008)
Agreed, I had lots of support, was a paid user. But since their latest releases starting with AdAware 2007, they have gone way down.
The "business" is taking over, and has become only about the profit, not about a rock solid application anymore.
Reviewing 0083.0000 (May 16, 2008)
Yes, good review, Haxalot.
I used to do some beta testing, but I've pretty much given up on it. I send in reports to a few programs with developers I really admire, like AdMuncher.
I gave up on AdAware when it ceased letting me download updates for the earlier version a few months ago. Recent versions are so much dead weight.
I'm still using Spybot and SpywareBlaster. I agree that it's best to have multiple programs, but Ad-Aware has lost it.

Howdy,

-----------
I see a few who act as if they know something, but do not.
First I must say the guy who says 07 is bloated must know something, it is over 13 megs if you have had it for any length of time at all. 106 SE is 5 megs or less, so I see that 07 is the bloated version.
07 is a big drop for Lavasoft, a major step backwards.
1. 07 being nearly 3 times the size of 106, while at the same time has less flexability.
2. Too much of 07 is bacground, sort of like shoveing the kids out the garage and closeing the door, you don't know whats happening untill its been done, and then only a little of the surface, with almost no options to find out all the details.
3. One thing good is a lack of overloaded buttons and options for things nobody needs in a spyware/adware scanning and removal application. How to scan, what to scan, how to handle what is found and maybe an editor to edit some of the findings to work in your favor.
-----------
Ad-Aware since it's inception, actually a spin off from Steve Gibson's OptOut had started off as an excellent application, traded hands and began to suffer, yet early on after the change they were dedicated to maintain a high level of security, and as time went on, there was a rise and fall of quality. Overall for several years Lavasoft has a done pretty good job of makeing it easier for those of us who do know, keep those who don't know, a little safer. And I do thank them for that.
Last spring is when it all began to change, I first got 07, and ran it once, I knew it was crap. I hung on for a few weeks to see if it would improve, but not really, not the way I would have changed it, so I dumped it.
Now the guy who says he has to "fall back" to using spybot S&D, well I never stopped using it.
One spyware application is not enough, each one has its own set of things it does and doesn't do. So the use of 3 different ones will ensure you get that much more of the junk out.
I was sad when MS purchased the best one around, then made it a beta, then no longer free, and or easy, so I dropped it too.
That leaves me with just a few left, and the recent upgrade of SpyBot S&D is a big jump, and does a very good job taking over where Lavasoft and Microsoft have left us out in the cold.
--------------
Alpha and Beta work.
--------------
It used to be a job, now just a bunch of wannabee hackerz are trying to jump on a wagon they don't know how to ride, and have destroyed that type of work.
We used to get paid, but not any more, the DUMMIES jumped in and pay the developers to be a tester, so rather than getting good programmers who can find the bugs, edit and clean the code, and help to actually make a product FREE OF DEFECT, we now have people who do not know how to track down a bug let alone find a cause out there trying to give feedback about some app or driver for hardware, and so a true fix never shows up, and those of you into OVERCLOCKING MB's CPU's GPU's and the like have all run into some of those lousy pieces of hardware and poorly written driver in the last 5 years and know exactly what I am saying...
My hope are the folks at LAVASOFT see this, and understand I am sad to see the change, and I am not attacking them, but dismayed at their choices. I hope they do get back inline to what is truely needed for everyone today, not just those who don't know how clean their systems, but also for those of us do know, and only use these apps for a time saveing device. Again thanks LS for all you have done, but your not the top of the wave any more, and thats where I ride.
-----------
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU STUPID HACKER WANNABEEZ!
You go right ahead and blow all YOUR MONEY and all YOUR TIME for some one else who will NOT PAY YOU for what you did.
As dumb as a lot of terminal patients I see and meet, who jump on drug test programs today, and have to pay big bucks to do it, when it was the other way around 20 years ago. Back then you got paid big bucks to risk your life, but todays DUMMIES pay their hard earned cash to SUFFER WORSE AND DIE. Furthermore they never check out the drugs or programs, only what the developers tell them, so 9 out of 10 clinical trials patients die 1 to 2 years into the programs, and I have lost a lot of friends to that scam of the FAST TRACK drug program, no lab tests, no, mice, just an idea and then straight into human testing.
When will you people get smart, and dump the anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs and come back to reality?
I remember when Reveal tried pulling a shortcut slip in development and back then the users were almost all hackers, we caught on in a hurry, an they went under. BUT not today, we got junk companies selling trash, not standing behind guarantees, treating customers like slaves less than human. Wake up world, push for true quality, and if you don't do code, don't do testing.
Enjoy, and most of all, please learn from message.
30 years hacking affords some knowledge to pass along.

I feel the need to revise my statement A little , Now that lavasoft is under new management I can no longer put my faith in there products until I have properly had time to review there ongoing practices.
It also seems there forum has been very dead and much to censored lately.

I am one of those loyalist who dropped this program!
My suite of applications included the previous version of Ad-Aware, along with SpyBot, and SpywareBlaster, along with CCleaner for additional cleanup tasks. I find that SpyBot and SpywareBlaster are doing an excellent job without this third POS program.
Indeed, Lavasoft should be ashamed of releasing this without the full consultation of its users prior to release. Total TrashWare!

Are all the updates going to be for version 2007 from now on, with 2006 being unsupported? Because I really don't want to update :(
With 2006, I can keep adaware.exe and def.ref on a pen drive, and that is all I need. I tried stripping out 2007 to the basics I need and make it portable, but to no avail. So I'd really appreaciate 2006 definition files.
Reviewing SE1B176 Beta (Jun 17, 2007)
Well you cant really compare Spybot and Ad-aware, Ad-aware is best at finding file based junk and Spybot excels when it comes to scanning your registry, thats why you should use both.

One of the best! It is used along side McAfee Security and Spybot S&D. Detected malware my spybot didn't.
Only a four though because it did miss the SmitFraud infection I had (spybot found it)...
Reviewing SE1B175 Beta (Jun 10, 2007)
Yesterday, I ran Ad-Aware with the latest definition on a friend's computer. It found nothing. I thought "Great, the PC is clean".
Then I ran Spybot which found 5 adwares, all familiar names, which made me wonder "Why didn't Ad-Aware find ANY of them?".
Since Ad-Aware has been working great before that, I give it a 3, which is arguably well paid, hoping that it will improve and return to the status of software I swear by.
Reviewing SE1B175 Beta (Jun 9, 2007)
Ad-Aware. Could have been just like Spybot, free, effective, and with an fast efficient detection engine that scours your computer.
What it is today is simply commercial crap bloat, you may as well just buy McAfee or Norton cruft - its of the same ilk.

Re CyberHobo's comment:
yes, it's never been able to catch everything-- why traditionally the Rx has been to run both it & Spybot(Pest Patrol sounds great: i had to remove CA due to some issues before they included Pest Patrol, too bad)-- and thus why no 5 rating(because of that & no auto/self updating): though just for all the extensive work & freeware status it does deserve better than a 4... And also because of improvements such as much faster scanning, downloading of updates, etc.
AGAIN: we need to be able to award ¼ points: If we're going to be the best, most detail-oriented-- we cant't have such broad 20% rating gaps... a ¼ point would equal 5%, which still could be considered too large: don't tell me there's no difference between getting a 90 or a 95 in school... but much better than the alternative of receiving only a 100 or an 80 grade..

Ad-Aware is a great utility for removing Spyware, Adware, Malware, and general "Crapware" from your system. The only negative comment I have is that on Windows 98/ME systems it can be extremely slow to scan, but that is more of a 98/ME memory limitation, not Ad-Aware itself.
The Ad-Aware team updates at least once a week, and more often if necessary. The updates are pretty big for dialup users, but considering the amount of things that it scans for and the benefits of the program, one can't really complain much.

My problem? Oh, I dunno.. that the main news page is having the living hell spammed out of it because of these constant definition updates? Especially with that How-To guide in there. The amount of people that don't have the ability to download the defs directly from the program is *much* less than the prople that do - go with the significant majority, y'know? Betanews should have a dedicated section for these things for two reasons: 1) stops other "legitimate" software from being pushed down the page (eg. I nearly missed the new MsgPlus update because of this AdAware thing as I thought this update was the same as the one posted earlier. It wasn't.), and 2) another service that can be provided for users of Betanews that require it. I have a question for you: Why don't Norton, McAfee, etc, have their defs listed on the main page? Why just AdAware?
Reviewing 01R310 23.05.2004 (May 23, 2004)
My thoughts exactly BootBlock, although towards yourself and not this app. Some people cannot update automatically and having the update avaiable for download is hardling doing anyone any harm - what exactly is your problem with it?

I should have done a search first then because that just proves my case - what a complete waste of time. While this is not my website it doesn't mean that what's being done isn't still pointless though. If there were a completely different category within the BetaNews website to put this kind of stuff - brilliant. But there isn't so it's still pointless within the terms of reference BetaNews themselves have set. [shrugs]

Reviewing 01R265 02.03.2004 (Mar 3, 2004)
turtle: I mean that you can download the latest reference file in the actual AdAware app itself a day or two before it gets listed here. For example: I *just* did an update in the app and got the new one. It has yet to appear on BetaNews. Also, the fact that this file has been downloaded so many times via BN is a tragic testament to why so many people are infected with viruses and trojans. People only seem to update when they have the definitions shoved in their faces. Maybe free porn should be shown when that Check For Update button is clicked.. I dunno..
Reviewing 01R264 29.02.2004 (Mar 1, 2004)
What's especially annoying about these reference files being listed on BetaNews is that the Ad-Aware program itself has a Check For Updates link right there under your nose when you start it. It's above the Start button - see it? Click that. Then you'll get the newest reference file before it's shown a day or two later on BetaNews.
You don't even have to mess about with stopping/starting Ad-Aware or unzipping files. *groan*

Ad-aware has a built-in auto update feature that fetches the Reference Files, there is no need in going through all those steps to download it manually. Just open Ad-Aware 6. click 'Open Webupdate' button (looks like a globe) and 'Connect', couldn't be simpler.
Reviewing 01R210 18.08.2003 (Aug 18, 2003)
Tried SpyBot and it was too aggressive. The newly re-done AdAware
(v. 6) addresses all of AdAware's previous deficiencies. Except
that the auto-update feature isn't reliable. (Hence had to manually
download this latest reference file !) AdWatch, in contrast, has a
ways to go: It consumes 35% to 40% of CPU cycles (on a 900-mHz
machine), and using Opera it closes the browser just for a pop-up !

Since trying out this program and updating the ref files, I've been most impressed. For regular users who stumble blindly onto a "malicious" website (IMHO) - those who "sneak" their apps on - this is the application for them...something that should at least be run weekly if a "power user" of the internet.
Would recommend this product.

Good program. Slow scanner and lack of effective deep registry scan keeps it from getting a perfect 5 stars. Right now, I consider the Freeware program Spybot Search and Destroy the best there is.
Reviewing 01R203 20.07.2003 (Jul 20, 2003)
It's a great program, but I believe it's more important to stop Ad-aware and the such before it gets installed on your computer, so I use SpywareBlaster.

Excellent Programme. WebUpdate facility works everytime. A note: Before trying to apply this update check you are using the new version of Ad Aware (Version 6 Build 181), otherwise the WebUpdate won't work. Please see this review by Keystroke http://fileforum.betanew...tail.php3?fid=965718306

Is not this a regular Windowsfile or am I wrong? , As long as Ad-Watch is active the file svchost.exe cant be blocked by Ad-Watch, only way is to pass file ?!?! I Don't think I like this behaveour from a file like svchost.exe, Is it a Bug In AdAware6 or is there realy spyware in svchost.exe file ?!?!
If this is correct adaware behaveour, My 5 is gonna be a 2

You're joking, right? ANY shell is better than this, it looks like it was whipped up in a few minutes using VB or Delphi. Featureless, unusable, unproductive, dare I go on?

OMG - I knew this guy when he used to spam DeskMod and various Forums with this s***. He should be sued, beaten, poked with large needles containing poisoness substances and scattered around the internet in tiny bits. This must be a joke, this guy has been banned from many sites for harassment. This product a shell for windows? It's more like a joke to humanity. Go get Litestep if you're looking for a windows shell.

why even report about this on betanews? simply use the included refupdate every time you run adaware. it's the easiest way, adaware automatically updates the reference file

Reviewing 015-16.05.02 (May 16, 2002)
I have updated the references before with no problems, but when I installed this one, first the file search bogged down, and then came to a complete stop. When I aborted, it refused to let me close AdAware. I had to close it from the Task List. I tried rebooting and had the same problem a second time. There's something seriously wrong with this file. I ran Norton Virus Scan, and found no problems, but I think someone should have a closer look at this file. There's a problem somewhere. I notice another reviewer also had problems with it.
Reviewing 015-16.05.02 (May 16, 2002)
If I press 'Abort' on the front panel, the X won't close the program. Because of the way the date in the logfiles is formatted, they don't sort properly unless all the entries are in the same month. Re: Why the different names. Ad-aware changed the naming of their reference file.
Reviewing 106-14-04-02 (Apr 15, 2002)
Hello.
What is the difference between a signature file and a reference update file ? Do we need both to update adaware?
Reviewing 106-14-04-02 (Apr 15, 2002)
Wow! I don't know what was updated in this 'update' but I had JUST run Ad-Aware the day before and cleaned shop. When I installed the update, it nearly instantly found 187 hits! Weird....but good, I guess.
Reviewing 106-14-04-02 (Apr 15, 2002)
File worked great. Found over 180 spywares. If you run ad-aware get this.
Reviewing 005-16-01-2002 (Jan 27, 2002)
Brilliant!!! It cleared alot of spyware programs that ver 5.62 signature file could not clear.
I would HIGHLY recommend it to Ad-aware users and that's all I've got to say 'bout that and that's that.
