Publisher's Description
Nobody knows military simulations like the world's premier land force, the U.S. Army. So when the Army began making a simulation to let civilians experience the barracks to the battlefields, it sent its talented development teams to experience the Army as a recruit would. The developers crawled through obstacle courses, shot weapons, parachute jumped, and visited the Army bases, all to let you play Army in the most realistic way ever depicted in a computer game.

Decent gameplay and graphics, especially for being free. As for everyones political views, which have no place in a video game review btw, go F@#$ yourselves... I was a soldier before i played and propaganda has nothing to do with it. Just as developers like capcom Square-enix, etc. smear their name all over their games, as they rightfully can being the creators, so is the army. ifu think its propaganda, its just u being mad that the US Army kicks a** and your army doesnt. war is a horrible game huh? I bet your the same type of person who plays games like BF 1942 or MOH: AA or hell, even quake 3 or halo. All of these games depict war. What different is this? The characters change, thats all.
This game has been my favorite for a long time, I am highly addicted to the dockside and blizzard maps. Great realism (coming from someone who is serving right now in the US Army) and fantastic graphics. Good job AA Team

I haven't played the latest release. I came here to read reviews about it but instead found a political statement and a low rating.
If you have a problem with this game and its genre, please jump on the first plane to Washington, D.C. and do a little lobbying there. Don't come to a site that REVIEWS software and rate the product based on your political beliefs.
How did the game play? How were the physics? Was the AI suitable? Were the graphics realistic? No, you cannot answer any of these questions because you're so caught up in your own little world that you cannot see there are a lot of people out there who enjoy this type of game.
There are many games out there involving war scenarios. The classic Man vs. Man storyline has always been intriguing. Many kids growing up play "war" and "cops and robbers".
Get over yourself and leave the politicizing for another forum.

Try to find another free game that is this good. In fact, it's better than many games that cost $50.
I'm not sure why someone would give this a one rating just because they couldn't download it. In fact, if you click on the DOWNLOAD button it starts right away!! (you should use a download manager if the file is slow to download)
Now why give this a three rating and say "someday the linux version will come out"? What does that mean? Come on guys, ratings should reflect the quality of the product as it stands and nothing else.

This game, in terms of multiplayer FPS-style action, is superb. Granted, the "Basic Training" portion is a bit tedious for some, but helps familiarize players with the controls. Further "schools" for sniping, heavy weapons, special ops, medical training, etc increase the number of multiplayer servers you can play on, considering many have a minimun qualification requirement. And once you're in, the game really shines. Hyper-realistic, team oriented, sounds great, looks better... and totally free. Loved it! Just wish there were a single-player campaign mode, but as they say in the military: There is no "I" in "TEAM"

Mr. Guda- This site is for testing, using and then providing feedback to other readers. I find it pathetic that you post a review when you NEVER intend to use and evaluate the software in question. Whether this game is an ad for the Army or not I'd like to give credit to those playing it to make their own judgements on joining the military..of course their family would have a say as well. Do you brand all violent military games in the same way? Why would this game be worse than those? To brand every man and woman that "decided" to serve their country a killer is ridiculous. I'd love to keep my political ideals out of any review but I guess your silly tirade warranted a rebuttal. Stick to reviewing the software and keep the anti-military crap to yourself.. idiot

A game that is always being improved. I would give it a 5 except for the authentication/server problems that occur occasionally. There are bound to be some fallouts since the V2.3 just came out, and many servers are being upgraded. Give them a few days to settle in. If you want a game that really get close to the real thing, this is the game for you. Teamwork is very important. Graphics are nice, and the weapons are *very* close to the real thing. Only thing missing is the smell of sulfur :).

First.. I am posting to get those people at the bottom off the review because obviously they aren't reviewing the game.. Just their communistic view.. :) I would think that if the Army were to put out a game that it would have propoganda and especially during war times. Back to the game... Great graphics, smooth gameplay, and realistic terrain. I guess 3rd world eviroments are new to we Americans so we are facinated by them. If it were my daily life I would rate it a 1 also..
ModderXManiac reviewed v2.2.1 on Nov 20, 2004
This game uses the Unreal 2k4 engine, so there's plenty of eye candy, and the physics are halfway decent. I really wish they had a single player bot mode, and I hate having to go thru all the training. I'm sorry, but I wanted to get my frag on right away. Having to setup a user name on their site is a P.I.A., they could have just set up a little Stats system, like in ut2k4 , so you can quickly set up an account in-game.
And yes, I support our Military in almost every way. I support the government, and I think Bush has done an awesome job and made the right choices. If there are any unexcusable problems over in Iraq, look to the Pentagon, liberal weiners.
It is a free game after all, its not everyday they release freeware shooters that are anything near worthy to rival this. One question, do the programmers even play this game?
Try Joint Ops, the best alternative to this game.

I have played this game for about 2 years now, and it is simply the best, most realistic free FPS out there. No they don't have subliminal messages trying to make you join the army, and I have NEVER received any recruitment e-mails or telephone calls since signing up. They didn't even ask me personal information when creating an account. This game is well made, and although it still has room for improvement, what game doesn't. And as for bleh427's comments...are you 12 years old or something? He claims this game is the "Dumbest thing ever created"(ooo...that's witty), but he probably never even got through the basic training course. Even if he did...he probably joined a server, got totally owned, and left out of frustration before he wrote this review. As for the tax dollars subject...let's say they've spent $100,000 creating this game, which might or might not be overestimating. We have almost 300 million people living in the US, and assuming only a third of them are paying taxes, that's about a tenth of a cent from each person to go towards making this game...big freakin deal. The army spends a LOT more money than that on advertising and recruiting, so don't give us that crap.

This is a one of the best FPS team-based games ever created, and its free.
Yes, this is a recriuting tool, but it is a passive one. They do not tell you, "Join the army.", but they show you what you have to do to get in, throught the training, and also show you what some Special Forces teams actually go through.
Just wait untill they port the game into the new Unreal engine, it is going to be awesome.

the guns ie the m16 compared to the ak47(?) is unrealistic, the enemy gun can fire in FULL AUTO not just semi unlike the m16 that can only do semi and 3 round burst,
* you cant drive vehicles
* the weapon choice is small
* you cant choose to be terrist by choice
* you cant play in offline mode like bf:v

What did you think the game would be, tree-hugging and saving spotted owls? Just another case of the naive not having a clue that most of what we absorb in a day is propaganda in one form or another.

Um, I think BetaNews is slipping; this is old news. Version 2.0.0a has been out since early January. Putting that aside, this is a pretty good game. On it's own merits, I'd give it a 3, but since it's a freebie, I'll bump it up a notch.

What did you all miss when this game was first released??? The army stated that they put this game together to give anyone thinking about joining the army a little taste of the experience. You all seem to think this game is trying to brainwash people into joining the forces and committing every atrocity you've ever heard of. Have some of those things happend, yup. We're not proud of it. But there are thousands of examples of compassion and caring for each of the episodes you're bringing up. Again, keep your political agenda away from the game review and go blow hot air on one of your obviously biased political forums.
Games okay... but I'm giving it a five now to offset the sophomoric "reviews" below.

how is this a free game with the propaganda it comes with?
how can people not be political when the game is made for political reason?
anyway,
the game graphic, control, etcs. are not bad, but the gameplay, the most important element, is rather boring.

You get what you pay for, but in this case it was a pleasant suprise. Nice game.
Funny that the haters just have to keep chiming in to get out their consistantly whining views out.
Note to whiners: Nobody cares.
Did I say this was a nice gamne. Uh...... yup.

Well whatever you guys think its a free game and for others its a great game, nobody asked you to play it , and please keep your ideas on what propaganda out of it, Im a gulf war vet and love being a american. I support our troops and if war can be played on a computer instead of being on another country im all for it. For people who take there freedom likely go visit other countrys and see how they live. You'll be suprised that its so much easier to head over to burger king here than for them over there to get a single bite in a week. Propaganda here , over in some of the countrys ive visited your not allowed the things you want , the simple things. And still belive in what you are fed. Freedom isnt free and what you enjoy is what you waste and blame on others for providing you FREEDOM. What Americas Army has done is give away a free game and you call it propaganda. BETANEWS is about discussing new programs and hardware and games. I enjoy the new things coming out like "Americas Army" and waiting for new news on new software in my email is fun too. If you want to talk about politics go somewhere else. If you want to know on how freedom in other countrys are then go and see how they live. If you have seen the things i have seen you would be sick to death on it. and how there government treats them. But in BETANEWS its all about the software and etc.

This game improves on every new build and 2.0 is great. This game is as real as it gets. If it would cost money I would pay for it without even thinking twice.

A perfectly okay free game. If you've got a problem with the propaganda go and buy a game instead. If it wasn't for the propaganda you'd have to pay for it. If all game companies were this good when it comes to releasing patches and fixes I'd be very happy.

I think Counter-Strike is 10x better.

A game the size of a CD is nice so it gets a point. The propaganda on the home page too is obvious and embarassing.

I can say that Toms Clancy games are same crap as this ...
Really useless comparsion ...
Also i like people who comment this and are unable to get thru training ... probably thats why training is there ... i'm tired of whining kiddes unable to RTFM in other games ...

This game is great, especially since it's free. My only compaint is that it's a huge download, but I think you can get the game for free by mail and at army places... I'd download it to avoid dealing w/ crap from them. Besides that, this game rocks..

That guy makes me think of someone in a Peter Pan-type outfit, prancing around saying, "It's free, it's free!" in a squeaky, little elf voice. Haven't played the silly, little game though. I'll give it a 3 so I don't effect the ratings much.

Anyone who cant see how awesome this game is has no clue what they are talking about. ITS FREE, yeah it might not have some of the bells and whistles of other games we have all played but ITS FREE and for a free game it's damn good. As someone that has served it is super accurate and alot of fun. Its better than ALOT of games that charge you 40 bucks to buy so again HELLO ITS FREE!!!!!
Lindset reviewed v1.90 on Aug 9, 2003
You must be utterly stupid, cees2000. Are you new to the internet? It's available for free.. You've likely tried to download it from a file service that costs money (like fileplanet and fileshack). You can download the game from many sites that offer downloads for free.

Ouch this game sucks harder then i originaly thought. The training is endlessly frustrating. The actual game is alright graphics and sound wise but the gameplay is stale and boring. Not enough servers will leave you stranded in a map with no one else very often. Tom Clancy games beat the living stuffing out of this game and although you have to buy them at least its quality you can trust. All in all bad. Spend a gig of harddrive space on something usefull and for goodness sake stop promoting a waste of tax money! :-)
