As a former AVG user due to their new version 8 I have been trying out the competition. It has taken me awhile to get to this one.(should have started alphabetically) Avira, without a doubt is the best free antivirus out there. I love its low impact on resources. I couldn't believe how much faster my system boots now and I am seeing a 15% drop in memory usage. I have read some complaints that this doesn't do email scans. All I can say to that is, so what. I can't ever remember seeing a virus reported by an email scan by AVG and I used it for years. If you are careful about attachments you have nothing to worry about. I'll take the performance increase over a feature that isn't needed any day of the week.
Congrats to the developer of this great app. Wish I could rate it more than 5. Keep it lean like this and I will be with you for along time.

PS. It figures this would be the last of the free anti virus programs that I tested. Oh well, at least I won't be thinking there are greener pastures out there by someone else.

Try it you'll like it.

I am so SICK of hearing high, undeserved praise for NOD32! AntiVir not the equal of NOD32? That's a compliment. Avira actually adds legitimate malware samples to the database, while Eset only does so if it is proven to affect "enough people". And av-comparatives.org rates AntiVir more highly than NOD32. AVtest.org rates it much more highly than NOD32.

Yeah it can be tough to update, the last few days have been bad,but you can always do a manual update.

The thing is It is lighter than KAV,and as incredable as it seems, DOES have a better detection rate than NOD-32. (at least for one test).
Is equal to NOD-32?
I don't thank so,but its not the issue.
It does not cost 40 US a year either.
Compare it with Avast!AVG,Bit-defender free,COMODO anti-virus,etc,and you see just how much better it is than these turds.

Good to see you gave it a try Dude. I don't download emails and I even disable it in NOD so I wouldn't hold that against Antivir.

This is hands down the best free AV and honestly I think this is second to only NOD even though it has even better detection rates than NOD. Both are at the top in detection and both are lighter than the others. The thing I really like about both is that they don't slow my system down. Coming from KAV I noticed the differences immediately in surfing and opening apps. The scan times are also much quicker. I personally have never encounterd a false positive with either one and KAV gave me many. I much prefer the interface of these too in comparison to any of the others especially avast which has one of the worst gui's I've ever seen.

Have a look at the latest tests

I don't think agapecpus is correct about it not being able to update. It has a "Start Update" link in the OVERVIEW section. It lists current versions for both the Search Engine and the Virus Definition File. It can be incredibly slow to connect and download those updates though, at least on my system.

That said, I can't give it a 5 because unlike the other competitors in the free AV market, it does not do email scanning.

However, I like when it flags suspicious or even explicitly known viruses, you can have it present a list of options to choose from each time, which means you can choose to ignore known false positives. Very convenient.

Also, I very much like the way Quarantined files are handled. Under the Administration section, when you look at the Quarantine area, there are quite a few ways to handle the files that are contained in there including:

Rescan
Display Properties
Restore to Original Location
Restore to Other Location
Add Suspicious File to Quarantine
Send to Avira
Delete File

I do wish that the main interface window, and in fact ALL interface windows, could be resized so that it is easier to read the path and file name at a glance instead of being forced to scroll through horizontally.

So, all that said, it is a very good product, and if they added email scanning and improved server response time for update downloads, and maybe a few interface tweaks, I think it would easily earn a full 5 rating from me.
