BearShare is a file sharing program that lets you, your friends, and everyone in the world share files. Built on Gnutella technology, it provides a simple, easy to use interface combined with a powerful connection and search engine that puts thousands of different files in easy reach. It is designed to let you share files with everyone on the Internet, and download files that other people are sharing. Works with all types of files, and lets you search for files that contain specific words or phrases.

ModderXManiac, you forgot to check out the date of those reviews, they are AT LEAST two years old!
The Betanews staff needs to check the system requirements, STILL. The developers of this software don't support anything other than XP (http://www.bearshare.com/help.html#3). You've been told more than 2 years ago (repeatedly), clearly you STILL need to actually mark the entry properly before you post it.
Bearshare is still rubbish. Marked accordingly.

Wow, reading those past reviews and I am SHOCKED, who on earth is still using Windows 98?! Honestly people, XP is practically perfected in stability, at least come forward a few years!
Now i will rate this accordingly, I think P2P clients are dead, and bloated junk clients like Bearshare further prove my point, they are left for uneducated and illiterate computer users, and this is just plain junk.

Once AGAIN you say BearShare will run under 'Windows (all).' IT WILL NOT RUN UNDER Win 9X ! ! ! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Reviewing 18.104.22.168 (Dec 15, 2006)
Once again, the description says 'Windows ALL', and once again this version WILL NOT INSTALL on Windows 98SE ! PLEASE get the description correct so users don't waste time downloading and trying to install a piece of software that simply won't install.

First, I don't think it's fair to say that only "bleepin" idiots would use "this" app or "that" app. It's fairly easy for even experienced users to get tricked into using programs loaded with spy/ad/malware. That's why we all use AV's, right?
Now, back to the app at hand.
Bearshare used to be my preferred P2P (Lite, of course). But as of v5.xx, I noticed that my bandwidth dwindled when I used it. I ran Spybot. Sure enough... spyware. Not even the "lite" version is clean. Nor PRO. Not as good as it used to be either.
I couldn't find anything for awhile. Then came Cabos and Ares (opensource), which at first weren't great, but have now come into their own. Either one is a great alternative.
