Outstanding email client that, unlike Outlook and some other email clients, keeps attachments as discreet, separate files so they don't get as easily corrupted as keeping emails and attachments in a single database.

The interface is a little dated but can be improved by installing one of the icon packs at http://www.skwire.net/~apps/becky/icons/

Agree that Becky is a good email program. Email clients are "to the eye of the beholder" in value. Each to his own as most clients work well. The Bat is good but no Calendar, Outlook lost my email, Thunderbird updates kill installed addons, etc, etc. I have found two good ones but they are not free...Postbox is what Thunderbird should be and EMclient. Outlook replacement..I settled on EmClient as it has been solid with no crashes, lost mail. It is under active improvements but updates slow in coming.

What works for you is a good choice...

It's really disappointing that many reviewers on this site consider "free" software the litmus test of "quality" and low rank paid software. In some cases free is better: Open source "WinSCP" is the equal or better of its paid FTP client counterparts. Freeware "MyPhoneExplorer" has features that even paid Android apps don't have. But "Registry Workshop," with its fast search and replace and backup functions, is unquestionably better than the free OEM Windows registry editor. Likewise, Becky Email, with the bullet proof way it archives attachments, searches text and uses memory, is as good as free alternatives like Thunderbird and even ahead of paid email clients such as Outlook in terms of reliability and versatility.

This client continues to be my favoured mail client on Windows. I only wish there was as good a client on Linux. Light as a feather - after running for hours it's using just over 15MB of RAM. Thunderbird is up to 91MB after less than five minutes. Yesterday I wanted to set up an automatic reply filter. A two-minute job with Becky. Thunderbird? Forget it. I'm sure there's a way if you just install the right plugin. If you can find it. And if you trust third-party developers embedded in your mail software. No doubt the TB fanboys will protest; like the Comodo and Ubuntu fanboys they get very uptight when you criticise their toys.

Never mind. Carry on using TB. I hear you can even download colourful themes for it!

Leave Becky to those who understand its elegance and hidden treasures.

Worth every last euro I spent on it, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

If you're new to this fileforum board you probably don't realize that some guy has nothing good to say about any software. It's doubful he even tests it. As for AOL, they ain't dead by a long shot as much as you'd like to think so. Get used to Aol being around for quite some time.

This program works as designed. And no, like many, I wouldn't pay the price after the time out period.

Lite, fast and not buggy at all. Some features are pretty nice like warnoptions.
But...I do not like that when replying the original malitext is not added to the reply mail (have to copy the text first and paste it, very annoying!) and double-clicking on a mail does only give a view in the preview-area and doesn't open in a new window. When I want to reply I have to go to the toolbar to do this(or Ctrl+R). Searched for this options to change but wasn't able to find. Otherwise, pretty nice but a view things as mentioned must chance for me to let it work decent.

excellent

Edit: One thing I was to mention, while being a excellent piece of software, is it worth $40.00 or whatever it is. There are free applications out there as good as this one. Something to think about. I use Koma mail and windows live mail, both just as excellent as this is in my opinion of course.

I've been using Becky for 6 years and I love it. It's fast, flexible, clear, powerful, portable, easy to operate, friendly... and with plugins you can do whatever you need. Template features are awesome.
I agree with dgg who states that this is the software that he was using for the longest time.
Go Becky!

I second gezley's assessment. Becky is an outstanding e-mail client. I have been using it for years. Great functionality. It's unfortunate the author doesn't update the interface. But my preference is for apps that work. In any event, you can improve the eye-candy of Becky by making (or installing) one of the many icon and title bar files floating around here:
http://www.mickeytheman....s/index.php?showforum=4

gezley

gezley reviewed v2.47.00 on Jun 30, 2008

An excellent email client.
Some pluses:
1) Becky is the only client to implement a 3-pane vertical layout properly, maximising screen estate.
2) Mail storage can be configured as 1 email = 1 file. Outlook, Thunderbird, Claws and Sylpheed all store mail in single file formats. This makes your mail vulnerable to file corruption. I have Becky storing tens of thousands of emails as individual files. Whne you have seen people lose all their email in Outlook because of file corruption this method of storing becomes a godsend.
3) Attention to detail - right-click on the Forward button and you get the option to Redirect a message. Just one of a number of small things that continue to surprise me 12 months after buying the program.
4) Security - Becky can be configured to show email in text format first, but it is easy t switch to HTML format for those mails you consider trustworthy.
5) Keyboard configurability - second-to-none.
6) Remote mailbox access - Becky allows you to access a POP3 server remotely and delete mail on the server, before downloading it. Very handy if an extra-large email is holding up delivery.
7) Excellent filtering capability

These are just some of the reasons I bought Becky. Yes it was 40 dollars, but the price is worth it if you value your email, and don't want to wake up some day to a corrupt Outlook or Thunderbird mail file. If one of my 30,000 mail files becomes corrupted in Becky I lose one mail, not the other 29,999. To my mind this alone is worth the price.

Yes Becky could do with a makeover, but don't be fooled by her looks. She's an excellent mail client and the very best I've tried in Windows. But you need to spend time with her to appreciate her strengths and elegance. Don't dismiss Becky after just a short trial.

walruz

walruz reviewed v2.47.00 on May 20, 2008

This application used to be my favorite mail client. 4 or 5 years ago it swept the floor with Outlook/Eudora/TheBat and all the other clients. Unique features & functionality (by that time), small footprint, direct POP3 access to the server without downloading mails, multiple accounts were managed with ease, etc, etc.
Awfully, it didn't receive any UI or functionality upgrade over these last years, downgrading the user experience. Thunderbird, Claws (on linux), Opera mail client and even Chandler (yeah, it's a PIM, but useful on the comparison) are more decent options. It seems that the developers at RimArts are only focused on fixing bugs, rather than improving the product.
What a shame.

Nice and lightweight enough, can be pared down to under 4 MB on disk. I may choose to go with Becky! over TB 1.5.x/3.x (both at 20+ MB on disk, chrome unhacked). Four out of five as it has a well-established base of users and is easy on system resources (vs TB and Eudora 7.x).

Becky is, without any doubt, the best email client that I have ever used. The comments about how it looks are ridiculous. It does a better job then the fancy looking email clients. Carty (the author) knowns exactly what his users wants & he gives it to them. He knows they don't want looks over performance & function. It's an email client, not a piece of furniture.

Stephen Bungert

Stephen Bungert reviewed v2.27.00 on Oct 6, 2006

The problem with becky is, is that it's stuck in the 1990's.

There have been no real changes to the interface which is looking old. Fields and labels don't line up exactly either resulting a big mess, this is further not helped by the developer just adding new checkboxes and options to the existing GUI without redesigning it.

I just can't bring myself to use an application that looks like it was made for windows 95.

Becky is a great client, I've used it for ages. But it needs a version 3 asap or it needs putting out to pasture

kail (message above), carty obviously doesn't know what his users want. I was one and didn't see much development they way I would have liked.

Becky's form will become that of a coffin inline with it's function as dead shareware - thanks to numpties like you. If carty want's to save his software from oblivion he should stop listening to users at Mickey-the-mans forums and the becky yahoo group.

Mozilla saved their email client from a slow lingering death... by changing it's form, maybe carty can too.

Before you make a stupid reply, you should note that Mozilla's form changes didn't ruin the function of the email client, it led to it's huge success and thus let it perform it's function.

I have used many email clients and Becky! comes out top.

It is light, stable, has good filtering/profile manager and most importantly, free upgrades. I do not want to pay every year for upgrades especially for email clients.

You may say the interface looks ugly but do you know that there are icon packs.

Only one minor dislike I have is the support forums. The japanese forums are filled with conversations unlike the English forums. If the English forums are more active, that will attract more users.

Overall it's a great software.

brusco

brusco reviewed v2.26.00 on Sep 20, 2006

rockcj,
you are an idiot. You jusge software purely on its appearence. what makes a good email client is features, stability, reliability, and ease of use. Poco mail has ease of use, nothing else. It is bloated cartoon garbage that is prone to crashing. It also annoys the crap out of people when they receive bloated stationary based email that pocomail sh*ts out. Have you ever manually checked the registry after installing Pocomail? Thought not. It loads it with crap. Why?

Becky Internet Mail is efficient, stable easy to use and DOESN'T NEED TO PAD ITS INTERFACE WITH BITMAPS AND BADLY IMPLEMENTED EYE CANDY, applications that do that are usually aimed at the lower end of Net intelligence, e.g. you.

To ogorur, you must have missed that if you use the setup executable, it makes an Add/Remove Programs entry called "Becky! Ver.2" for easy uninstallation. Although I'm not sure why anyone would want to. :P

this program resembles the Bat! in many of its features. Especially HTML mail composing is a great plus (which on the other hand makes it vulnerable to virus attacks).
