Celestia 1.5.1
Publisher's Description:
Celestia is a real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, it doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in it is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

This is a great program, my only complaint is that it will not remember the graphics settings you choose. It launches in a window every single time and I have to go set the resolution and color depth.
If there actually is a way to force it to remember I'd be thankful if someone could tell me.

Very good software. You may also want to add Winstars 2.0 and Stellarium which make up TOP 3 in this field!

Absolutely the best astronomy app I've seen.
I wish more people knew about this, although it's possible Google might expand its Earth program to include the solar system, maybe even the galaxy, making this obsolete.
Til then, play with this. Nice app. Small size, great graphics, very flexible.
The learning curve is a little above average, but once you get the hang of it, it's great.
PS: Check out the Motherlode for add-ons. You can put Star Wars and Star Trek ships in orbit, and watch 'em in 3D!

If you are interested in astronomy and/or SF&SF then you will probably love this program as much as I do. However, do visit their home site as there is a Celestia v1.3.0 released on 16 Apr 2003, versions for the MAC, documents, add-ons, a gallery, forum, and a version for those who have a video card less than 16 megs of memory all available from there. A GEM! And amazingly enough it is FREEware!
