Concerity Analytics Lite allows desktop application software to track basic usage information about when, where and on what hardware customers are using the software.
Concerity Analytics Lite tracks When your users are using your software. It records a time stamp every time a customer launches, closes or crashes your application. Using the Concerity Results Dashboard you can watch this data over time. Where your users are located in the world. With each application use, it records the geographic location of your end user and makes it available to you in an online report showing country, state/province, and city. It records your customer's operating system, disk space, memory footprint, screen resolution, graphics card and CPU.
Concerity Analytics Lite is a no-cost version of Concerity Analytics (currently in beta). Concerity Analytics Free has some limitations not present in the full version. These limitations are described in the Concerity Analytics Free User Guide, which is included in the download package.

I agree that privacy is a concern here, but there are lots of applications doing this now, like Chrome and Acrobat Reader. As long as users are notified and can opt out or in then I think it's a good thing to do.
The data that gathered could be invaluable to a software company. It just needs to be done in the open.
I'm going to download and try it out.

Having statistics to see how your application is being used is important for developers and marketing. Knowing your target demographic is not enough these days, with so much competition any additional information is very helpful for developers. weather its being used to see what kind of hardware, software configuration, usage statistics, etc... this can allow the developers, or company, to better refine a product to better suite the needs of the users.
that being said, it must be stated in the EULA that these kind of statistics (anonymous or otherwise) are being collected, otherwise its a privacy breach. Digsby got in a lot of trouble for that a few months back.

Just what we need Open Source spyware!
Is enough that people are forced to use software that spy's on their usage now we contend with it being freeware.
Big Brother is watching and there is no privacy in anything anymore including desktop applications.
