DesktopX is a program that enables users to add all kinds of new and interesting things to their Windows desktops. By default, Microsoft Windows only supports static images on the desktop called "icons". DesktopX can take your desktop to the next level by allowing user to put desktop objects and widgets on it as well. It also supports creating entirely new desktops from scratch.
DesktopX 3 is a major improvement over previous versions. Not only does it have vastly more features than previous versions, it has been re-designed to separate the user portions from the content creation portions. Previously, someone who wanted to simply add "widgets" to their Windows desktop also had to interact with DesktopX's powerful, yet easy to use, developer environment which tended to overwhelm new users. With DesktopX 3, the features of the program have been streamlined.

Middle of the road. The plus? Well with this app you could create stand alone self executing widgets to use on the desktop. The negatives? Price, memory footprint.

Applications like this are a dime a dozen, only difference is almost all of the others are free. Yahoo widgets are great, light on resources, very plentiful, and most importantly free.

In the past I liked this, although it was quite heavy on resources, as there was very little else around that I could find, especially for free.
But now there are applications like the person below me give links to and there are other things like....
http://www.desktopsidebar.com/index.html - which allows undocked panels.
http://www.punksoftware.com/rocketdock - which allows a superb FREE version of what Objectbar does.
http://www.crystalxp.net/bricopack/en.htm - fantastic skinning and transformation pack.
Each of the above, and the other links that were provided, enhance greatly the desktop of XP without the need to spend any money on Stardock applications.

I was a user of ObjectDesktop from when it first came out, on OS/2, way back. Sadly OS/2 is no longer supported by ibm.
Still, i bought it for a while on windoze 9x, but eventually slipped back into something pre-emptive [DOS].
The idea was good under OS/2, but some of the Windows stuff was a tad clunky [prolly the OS fault].
