Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. It includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.
This is the DirectX Web install.
Reviewing 9.29.1974 (Apr 20, 2011)
It's Bing toolbar installer for now, nothing more..no changes for DirectX
Reviewing 9.29.1973 (Dec 1, 2010)
Somewhat confused as to what exactly is on offer here. Does anyone know as it's changed from yesterday.BTW I hate with a vengeance the Bing toolbar, or any toolbar to be honest.
Reviewing 9.29.1973 (Dec 1, 2010)
Only enhancement here: added bloatware. I'll pass.
I wonder how long before .NET starts packing a toolbar...
Reviewing 9.29.1973 (Dec 1, 2010)
No files to update (since DX Jun2010). But Bing bar is there !
Reviewing 9.29.1973 (Dec 1, 2010)
Eeeew, this now comes with Bing Bar. Yuck! It looks like that is the only "improvement". Thanks Microsoft but NO THANKS.
Reviewing August 2008 (9.24.1400) (Aug 11, 2008)
Only the Web Installer is currently available. People keep posting links to older versions, like the June/08 one, or the Aug/07, or even the Feb/08 version. The full installation files may take up to a week or so to show up at MS.

Oh that's hilarious. When I try to download this, Microsoft tells me my copy of Windows isn't valid. Silly Microsoft, I already paid you fools!
Reviewing January 2007 (Jan 9, 2007)
@c4p0ne You use it for 15 years now and you never paid? No admiring from my side!
If you use it, pay for it! Or go for free alternatives. *Shaking head*
Reviewing January 2007 (Jan 8, 2007)
It's still version 9. DirecX 10 IS NOT planned to EVER be released on Windows XP based systems due to the vicious nature of Microsoft planning to try and STRONG ARM you into purchasing Windows Vista. Those silicon wankers can strong-arm my balls since I'll never pay for an MS OS (going on strong 15+ years now without giving a single cent, ever!) :) :)
Anyway, just a standard update this is. Play latest games, bug fixes, etc.
Reviewing January 2007 (Jan 8, 2007)

Reviewing February 2006 (Feb 8, 2006)
I don't see whats wrong with rating every update. Some versions are total garbage, some are 5 star. People like to know if the new versions are garbage or not before they download.
Reviewing February 2006 (Feb 8, 2006)
LoL.. =D
People, If you rate every update. You don't rate the actual program...
Without this. Windows is like a bird without wings.
Reviewing February 2006 (Feb 8, 2006)
The December 2005 release added the ability for .NET programmers to take advantage of the power of DirectX in their .NET applications or games.
Your rating should be rated on the overall product, not just this specific update. The fact is, DirectX is ubiquitous now, and is used by nearly every commercial 3D PC game out there.
But they lose a point because I could never figure out how to program with it in unmanaged code, and they've removed DirectDraw docs from the latest SDKs. I want accellerated 2D, darnnit. :(
Reviewing February 2006 (Feb 8, 2006)
McCrap: What updates to DirectX 9c does it provide?
Nothing-- these monthlies are among some of the most useless updates: a handful of files had their date changed, while v.# & size remained the same. Now, i'm not gonna waste my time comparing files-- in the case of tiny changes beimg made & not reflected in general size and published version number.
I'm also getting real annoyed with the bugs & constant updates of validation, windows update & IE-- what a freakin' convoluted time sink & resource waste process for a simple friggin' download.
Reviewing 9.0a Updated (Mar 27, 2003)
Now that 9.0a is officially back again.
I have a question,
How come the redistributable version is still 9.0 without the (a)?? and Microsoft's official webpage still show the release date of redistributable version as last year, December 2002.
Reviewing 9.0a Updated (Mar 26, 2003)
On my pc this runs a lot better than VMWare. We'll see what changes are to come in the future now that it's been obtained by Microsoft.
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 26, 2003)
Microsoft has withdrawn the 9.0a release (for the moment). No reason given...
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 25, 2003)
Um, excuse me? The Radeon 9700 and 9800 are fully DirectX compatible and compliant. That is why DX9 was released, because ATI was releasing DX9 cards. Just becuae nVidia's vaccum cleaner sounding card is not out yet, does not mean there are no DirectX 9 cards out there.
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 25, 2003)
Well ok its an update, but there are few manufactures using the DX9 APIs at present anyway.. makes you wonder why the update from 8,.1-9 was bought in so soon.. and for the ATI Kiods in here, no ATI cards (including Radeon) dont make full use of it either.
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 24, 2003)
dcowern, indeed I had that service disabled to save memory. Set it to manual, started it and it's installing right now just fine. Thanks for the help! ;)
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 24, 2003)
Now, I checked Microsoft's official website,
it states the version as 9.0,
without the "a".
And the release date is December 2002.
So where is this 9.0a from?
I do not want to waste my time downloading something huge and getting nothing new from it.
Reviewing 9.0a (Mar 24, 2003)
To the poster below: I had the same problem. There are two possible solutions.
1. If you have disabled cryptographic services, re-enable them. Having them set to disabled will cause the error you described. Enable it, reboot, and try installing again.
2. If the above doesn't work then there is probably a problem with the \windows\system32\catroot2 directory. Rename the folder to rename the directory to catroot2bak, reboot, and try installing again.
Hope this helps. -- Dave
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
Dont install this if you are using Windows Messenger 4.7.105 ! You wont be able to audio or video conference anymore. I had to restore to get it back.
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
I have the same problem with Windows Messenger on both of my systems. I don't care though, it doesn't work half of the time anyway.
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
No problems at all... this thing works great and the Radeon 9700 Pro using the new Catalyst 3.0 drivers alongside the DX9 feels and plays a lot better... I've noticed a performance improvement of about 8-10% on my rig using a Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2600+ on most games.
For those who are experiencing probs with the web setup download, that's normal during the first hours after a new release from MS... their servers get clogged due to many people d'loading crap from them.
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
The software seems to run great - but now my windows messenger doesn't work! Someone thing about memory not being able to be written. Has anyone else encountered this problem????
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
Why are people basing their reviews on the ease/ability of download from MS? This is a totally irrelevant issue from the DX9 software itself. Keep it topical. DX9 is great -- can't wait until a Detonator driver supports it!

Not so. Try DirectX Buster. Works perfectly to uninstall DirectX and reinstall the OS default version.
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
This is indeed the final release of DirectX 9.0
You can download a standalone version (does not require an internet connection) from the link in the "Notes" section of http://microsoft.com/win...ctx/downloads/drx90.asp
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
Funny I loaded this on multiple PCs with absolutly no problems. If this isn't final then why did all of us MS beta testers get an email from MS saying it was. As far as someone saying that a MS rep even says they are nuts for installing it. Get a new rep that knows whats going on. Just my $0.02
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
Solid release. Whats up with the web setup program? For users that need to setup a proxy this just sucks.
Reviewing 9.0 (Dec 20, 2002)
I just rebooted my computer again and now DXDIAG seems to be working fine (see my other message below). You might want to reboot your computer a second time after installing DirectX9. Also, if you're using a Matrox graphics card, you might want to disable Matrox's Powerdesk program that runs in the background. Powerdesk seems to slow down all DX9 functions tremendously! Glad it works now anyway. :-)
