Fences saves the day when it comes to keeping any kind of orderly desktop and having some control over how it behaves. One of my favorite features is being able to hide any amount of it and keep only what I want showing so I can actually see and enjoy my wallpaper. If the price is an issue for you, get on the mailing list and hang on until they put it on sale again, then grab it. Stardock makes several windows-taming programs that have more than paid for themselves in ease of use & pure aesthetics over the years.

I have used Fences since it was introduced, it's brilliant and I could not see myself not using it, it's a must have.
Other tools from Stardoc I could not live without is ModernMix, ObjectDock and Start8, if you are using windows 8, go and get them your won't regret it.

Been using Fences for a while and it has tamed my cluttered desktop. Combined with Start8 makes using Windows 8.0 and 8.1 a pleasure.

This is $10...not free. Have to take the freeware labels with a grain of salt these days.
Worth it if you buy the Stardock packages all together but not on it's own...
Neat product though...might pay $4 tops (lifetime updates).

I have been looking for years for this kind of stuff and suddenly a month ago I stumbled on Fences. Just perfect form me. Works fine on Windows 8 64 bit too!

This should be listed as commercial demo IT IS NOT FREE!!
Fences 1 was free and does a great job, but it's not worth spending money on it. especially as something similar should have been built into windows to begin with!
I will be sticking with version 1

I have to agree V2 is worth the money. A lot nicer over V1.
V2 of Fences and Start8 are 2 great products made by Stardock.

I had requested per fence coloring a long time ago. I think they may have already had the idea. But it is here now. OMFG is looks great!
Cost 6.99 to update from v1.x. Worth every penny!
Truely great American made software.

I thought this would be crap. After all it's just transparent folders on your desktop right? Well kind of. But not quite.
I was *really* surprised how well this worked. I might even shell out for the Pro version, though the basic version is perfectly adequate.
@guru_v, What stunning futuristic OS are you using then? You can't do this with a standard Linux install. So i'm guessing you're so awesome you've written your own shell or your own OS? If so, why don't you open source it and we can all have a laugh.

It's like a trip in the wayback machine! It does almost exactly what Windows 3.1 did by default. Great for lovers of old, and antiquated technology.
Should help complete the trip back in time that is started by Windows 7.

I had a problem develop , I couldn't delete or work with a fence. it turned out that the copy i have had expired. The fences i set up still worked for getting to programs but as soon as i updated it worked again. I don't find this a flaw as the program still ran and did what it was set up to do . I have to come to love this program and have recommended to all users of xp.

On my 24 wide screen monitor this program is great.. I have made and deleted fences, changed color on the txt on them i have been using it for well over a month and this is one of my must haves. I hope they expand a bit on the fences. and what you can do with each fence vice all of them only.

I have been using Fences for about two weeks now. The concept is great, but I have had some problems. The first is that I cannot delete a fence and the second is that I cannot rename one. I have tried using their instructions, but to no avail. One other enhancement I would like to see is the ability to change the fonts and the colors. If they fix these problems I would give this programs a "5 Star Rating"

One of the coolest applications to come along in quite awhile.
I've been using fences for several months and have had no problems at all.
Does what it says it will do.

Seems like a great idea but didn't work at all for me. It did seem create the boxes but they were not visible on the screen and i couldn't do anything with them. Had to options set to always show the boxes on also.
Sent a bug report using the Debug button in the app.

This program does what it says. Doesn't lag my system like the way windows does. I have tons of icons on there and not an ounce of lag. It is really amazing!
It doesn't really resemble a fence though, I'd call it something else...

I have been using Fences for over a month now and love it. Fences makes it easy to keep a complex desktop organized and is completely flexible. A keeper.
