I have no ax to grind. But I'm curious, why this over WinSCP given the malware issue and the fact that the program did not have the option to encrypt passwords until last May?

As a basic and free FTP solution, FileZilla was great. I'd been using FileZilla for years until around 2009 when it came to my attention there was a *GAPING* security problem with it. If you're using it on a personal computer I'd say you're safe if no one ever gets at your machine (root, remote, or otherwise) but in a kiosk or public PC environment, you would be nuts to use it. FileZilla's Achilles Heel is the fact that is stores password in *plain text* in a file called sitemanager.xml? The author had commented on why he didn't want to *fix* this problem by hashing or encrypting the passwords. He's basically said he'll never fix this problem, deal with it. Yeah, no thanks. I switched to WinSCP for SFTP stuff and never looked back. There is NO excuse for passwords in plaintext in known directory/folder locations that can be readily exploited by hackers and thieves. If he ever fixes it, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

GARBAGE.

FileZilla 2.x used to be the best. Thanks to the stubborn author and clearly poor programming and regressing bugs, FileZilla 3.x is irreparably ruined. A damn shame.

Use alternatives like WinSCP.

Monkey_Punch

Monkey_Punch reviewed v3.5.1 RC1 on Aug 22, 2011

I used to be a big proponent of FileZilla until it was brought to my attention that it will store passwords in cleartext in a file (sitemanager.xml) that any user with access to the machine can harvest. That is bad and the author says it's by design. As a client, it does the job, but for that security hole that is many, many years old, it gets epic fail. If the author ever fixes the security hole, I would be happy to give it 5 stars. But for continuing to make the excuse of "by design", two stars off.

Nice, reliable transfers, and for some reason it uploads faster than any other ftp client I've tried.

Substracted 1 star for three reasons:

1. If I get an ftp URL in email from a client of mine, in the form of
ftp://user:pass@ftp.host.com/some/path/file.txt
I cannot just paste the URL and have the download start (the way I can in Total Commander, for example). You have to manually aplit the URL into part and create a new site in the site manager first. This is a task for software, not human fingers.

2. You can add frequent locations to bookmarks, but there is no "recent connections" feature. Most of the time you have to go through the site manager again. At least do away with the modal dialog implementation and put the sites in a side panel in the main window, so that it can be accessed and browsed quicker, without the modality.

3. The "Network configuration wizard" always ends up with a failure for me, which would suggest that there's something wrong with my connection - but the actual real-life connections and downloads work flawlessly. So why does the wizard spell gloom and doom?

Who uses FTP? Are you serious? If you're downloading lots of files from an FTP server, you're sometimes better off doing it with a full FTP client. The same is true when you have to navigate lots of directories to find file(s) you need. And if you have your own web server, you need an FTP client to get the files there in the first place...

Well, krgood, I registered FTP Voyager back when I needed it for mainframe (MVS) support. It had that and worked well. (I'm no longer a software engineer, and I have no idea how well FileZilla would work in that regard.)

The FTP Voyager interface is also much more customizable--I realize that this may not mean much to you, but it does to me. This does not mean "It doesn't look as pretty"; it means it's not as easy to use. There is a search function in FZ, but it can't work in the background; when you're using it, that instance of FileZilla is tied up, too bad for you. Synching? Again, not up to par. And so on.

So you can keep your inane quips about "suckers" to yourself. (And by the way, it was P.T. Barnum who said that, not C.W Fields, whoever that is.)

But as I've said before and elsewhere, I give the FileZilla author credit for quality. I dumped FTP Voyager a long time ago because it's an irredeemable bugbucket.

emanresU deriseD,
Please inform us of the journey this poor inapt application has to make to soar with it's shareware counterparts. I have used most of the "sareware" clients and this one still reigns king. It is simple, easy to set up and use and does an excellent job not to mention that it is free. Paying for a program does not make it exceptional...only profitable. You really ought to read what people say before you shoot your loud mouth off. This is what mdmower really said about updating FileZilla and I think its a really good idea for a future version:

"I only rate down a point due to the mechanism of distributing updates. While I love frequent updates, I dislike having to download the entire package each time and running install. A real updater inside the application would be very useful."

He is talking about incremental up-dating, like the Mozilla packages do. Life is a bit short for your type of behaviour.

Back to FileZilla; a fantastic piece of software, thanks to those who spend so much time developing it.

Peter

Re: the constant updates

Unless there's a bug that's directly affecting you, or a critical update is released, you don't *have* to update every time a new version or beta is released, do you? Just update, say, once a month, or every few weeks. :)

I don't mind 'constant' updates, or nightly builds/etc. - I just take it as an indication the devs are actively working on the program, good or bad. :D

And, that non-issue aside, its a near perfect FTP client. The Server version is so good its been ported to Linux.. (never seen that before) and also works perfectly in Ubuntu, we use it here in the office.

The greatest thing about it is the cross platform aspect, I can run the server on Ubuntu, and the server monitor on my Windows machine and see in real time whats going on with the server. Genius.

You'd have to be "a complete retard" to give FileZilla less than a 5, just because it's free? Let's see...

How often I've looked for a program in a particular category, and come to a site like this one. Sometimes I am not willing to pay for the software, but often, I just want whatever is best, whether or not I have to pay for it. I prefer using really good software, not just really cheap software.

So what happens is that I sort by rating, and invariably at the top are all the freeware titles. I look at them one-by-one, and often see that although they're free, they lack the features and often the stability of their shareware counterparts. So I have to keep searching... Another software title... Oops, that one is also overrated because it's free, keep looking...

Listed by increasing importance, I like my FTP client to have (1) a directory synchronization feature, (2) an automatic edit-and-upload feature, and (3) the ability to search FTP directories (searching is kind of an obvious capability to have, no?). But I guess this means I don't have a clue. Perhaps "clue" is Latin for "damaged brain".

- MSW: Call WSAStartup, fixes WSANOTINITIALISED problem
- MSW: Use closesocket(fd) instead of close(fd), the latter caused uploads to hang at the end
- MSW: Fix socket hang after changing event handler. Use a better way to resend events

3.1.0-beta1 (2008-07-10)

Great client. I use LeapFTP and for me, the simplicity of the interface and quick start up time are the most important factors in an FTP client. I do not believe that an FTP program should have a complicated, fancy interface - it should just be streamlined, easy to use, and fast.

Filezilla is excellent and the best choice. I do, however, use LeapFTP for one reason still -- the fact that the transfer window and system messages window are able to appear below the local and remote file listings at 50% each - thus my program has 4 windows in a perfect 2x2 grid.

It would be so simple for this to be added and I'd then make the switch.

I've been using this program for years, on dozens of computers, including Vista, and never once had it crash, accept when trying out nightly alpha builds. I've also connected to dozens of servers, always with SFTP or FPTS, never had a problem. Feature wise, it actually has far far more features than just about every other FTP client available. And nothing wrong with the interface, unless you're an eye candy fan boy, which it sounds like you are.

Tarun.

Tarun. reviewed v3.0.7 RC1 on Feb 11, 2008

Excellent application. I use it for both web site administration and even for a home FTP server. This RC is very stable and should go live within the next few days.

The interface is easy to use and navigate. On top of that there are themes that allow you to customize the look of the client (example: http://sumowski.devianta...ileZilla-Tango-55312081 - Tango icons for FileZilla), though the default is just fine. The tooltips give a nice explanation of every button on the toolbar that even a beginner can understand.

This is one of the best FTP clients available today. There are others but they don't add up to the quality you get with FileZilla. FileZilla has great support and the fact it's an open-source project is another perk for those who love to see how things work. The frequent updates are a welcome addition because users can see that there is active development along with on-going problem solving for any issues found.

Definitely a five out of five software.

The 3.x series managed to remove the majority of the features in the 2.x series, making it mediocre at best. There are a ton of FTP clients in the world, and this one just doesn't impress. The interface is still weak, and now it has one of the most meager feature sets in the lot. Still a few little things I don't like about, but I think I'm ready to uninstall v2. I love the remote edit, and being able to upload changes without closing the editor. Hopefully the developer will grant my request to eliminate the edited files dialog, and put it in a tab instead, that would make it even better.

An FTP client isn't there to seduce you into bed with its good looks, its there to transfer files. A task that this software handles very well.

Its lean (perhaps mcolgin would like a bloated skinable ui, idiot), free and well supported.

Well I decided to check out the nightly build change log:
http://filezilla-project.org/changelog.php

It looks like some of the major features from 2.x are being added back in. At least my the most critical feature for me, remote view/edit.

Edit: Just installed the nightly build, and I'm very happy with the progress. Although it still needs work, I'm sure the next release will win over quite a few 2.x users, who knows, maybe even me.

For my simple needs vers 3 is a crippled version of vers 2. I can't find the basic features which I required. I can use it but with some pain factor.

I cannot drag a file into the target directory without FZ highlighting a subfolder anywhere on the same horizontal line. I have to scroll down the folder list and find some space at the bottom - assuming that there is some space. Version 2 did not do that.

Also the reconnect button was hard to find and does not appear as easily.

Seriously, SmartFTP is anything but bloated. If You think FileZilla is all we need, and that SmartFTP is overkill, i guess all that You do is actually move files up and down? Sure, the excellence of SFTP would be a little too much then perhaps, but the rest of us, the one's who use alot of the power of FTP applications, are laughing at FileZilla. It's like measuring Wordpad and Word.

If You don't even have the need for the (to me) very basic things that SFTP and pretty much all other apps provide, which FZ doesn't, how can You call SFTP "bloated" just because You don't use those functions?

SMFTP is the most perfect applications i've ever used, and looks great. It's not bloated, lol, FZ is in another user-class and is referred to as "Intuitive interface" and "useful functions"! Ha!

These are the only new features in 3.0.1-rc1:
- Settings to configure size, date and time formatting
- Message log and queue visibility will be remembered
- Custom action to perform after queue completion
- Add some confirmation dialogs
So mostly cosmetic. Wake me up when something actually changes.

Not surprisingly, the "platform independent" rewrite took a heavy toll. Despite the fact that *nix platforms ALREADY had a bazillion FTP clients to choose from, the FileZilla developers spent 3.5 YEARS taking a strong FTP client on Windows and making it a lame FTP client on multiple platforms. They have promised that "most" of the lost features will be implemented in the "future" but if the last 3.5 years are any indication, I'll be running 2.2 for a long time to come.

I've tested this app on the early stages of v3 Beta and it sucked. Period. I've been using Filezilla for quite a long time and i was pretty much dissapointed with v3:
- Lack of features (it seemed like they removed them!)
- Awful new interface (in terms of organization).
Now.. suddenly, we have an RC1 for Beta 3.0.1 which have everything v2 had
- Handful of features
- Intuitive interface

It may not look like SmartFTP, it may not include all the excessive features WS and other ftp clients include, but it's a rock solid application which does what it claims: "a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP".. If I want a bloated ftp client which i can only use in my Windows computer (not my linux one) i'd stick with SmartFTP & co.

At the moment the filters seem to have some flaws, such as "less than" actually meaning "greather than"... at least to me, and a generally strange layout. However once they are set up, they really do help with my leeching!

As far as loading times...
I've got an 8 year old computer with 512mb of ram, and it loads in less than 2 seconds for me.

Skawt

Skawt reviewed v3.00 RC2 on Aug 30, 2007

Almost ready for prime-time, but there are some obvious bugs still to be squashed. Aside from the full-screen window-position bug, there's also the small matter of the software taking way too long to load. I have a Quad Core system with 4GB of RAm, a RAID10 array, and it still takes 10 seconds to load. That doesn't seem like much, but all of my other apps pretty much load within 1 second of being clicked on.

Otherwise I like where they've gone with the software, and they're brought forward all of the functionality of the 2.2.x series I used. I've switched to the RC2 version permanently and look forward to the release.

Limiting a project to one or two betas just because having more seems... wrong, or whatever, is the sort of thinking that produces buggy, broken, and rushed software. Good software will take as long as needed to develop, and will go through as many alpha and beta versions as is needed to work the product into high-quality software.

Bigmama said: "however i don't understand why so many betas... release 1 or 2 betas, 8 betas is silly"

Beta versions are made for testing purposes. Every Beta version is tested by users that report bugs. The more betas are produced, the more stable the final release will be. Actually opensource projects are some sort of continuous beta version, since every new beta brings more bugfixes and stability.

8 betas is not the end, it's quite possible that there will be more of them. Keep in mind that the 3rd version of Filezilla is a completely rewritten project (not a continuation of the 2.x branch). It is now created not only for windows, but for Linux and OSX as well. Developing for many platforms has always been tricky, that explains the 8 (and more to come) betas.

An Open Source software is not necessary a free (meaning no cost) software...

So you don't have to tell anybody he's a moron for that... ;)

Good FTP client.

Need Win95 support? You have the source code, man! Port it to Win95 by yourself. That's the point of Free Software.

[To morriscox]: Except those versions of Windows that are currently supported and no longer supported. If you're using an old OS, quit yer carpin'. Microsoft hasn't supported Win95 for years, so why should an open source developer do so?

Filezilla is one of the most reliable FTP clients today. I use it since version 1.8 and find it very attractive as it has all the functions I need, doesn't bloat the processor nor the RAM and is quite stable.
AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! :)
