Folding@home for Windows XP/Vista GPU 5.91 Beta 6  beta

Publisher's Description:

Folding@home works on theory and simulations of how proteins, RNA, and nanoscale synthetic polymers fold. The Pande Group has developed the ensemble dynamics method and its application to protein folding and wrote the client and server code for the Folding@home project. The Pande Group analyzes the resulting data. Similar to the Seti@home project.

Folding@home has the following other editions available: Folding@home for Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Folding@home for Windows 98/Me, Folding@home for Linux and Folding@home for Mac OS X.

I think all these programmes are worthwhile, people that complain about the contribution to global warming should consider their own energy footprint! It also depends on whether the power comes from gas or coal, which are the only two greenhouse emitters, or whether it comes from nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal...

As long as the people behind these programmes are doing it for the benefit of the community and not just to increase company profit distributed computing is a great idea and should be more widely encouraged. I strictly deplore it however in the case where the results aren't in the public domain or for the benefit or knowledge of the community.

Point Zero has a point, if you use Folding@Home for 24/7 it uses our precious resources but if you keep your pc on for few hours a day and on that time use Folding@Home then it's not a big deal.

This tool is adding a big part on global warming due to higher average electricity-demand, and yet its added value to science over all these years is nihil. Completely worthless.

It seems BetaNews is behind the times. On Folding@homes web site you can download version 6 BETA that works fine.
