Been converting a LOT of my media to AVI(good to high quality) and have mostly used XviD4PSP 5 for this(mostly converting DVD's). However, for files such as mp4's and mkv's, XviD4PSP 5 has a very hard time converting to avi, most always messing up. Freemake is able to convert flawlessly, as with most anything you throw at it. Like that it also has xvid capabilities. One gripe is that I'm limited to 224kbps for AC3 audio. Minimum 320kbps would be nice, preferably 384kbps, though you do get that 320kbps option when using mp3/2 audio for videos. Freemake also does seem to have difficulty converting DTS audio within a video, but so do other programs from what I've read.

UPDATE: I did have to buy the subtitle pack to be able to hardcode in subtitles. Asks for donation and you can get by with just $4.99.

    4 1/2 stars.

Have used this for sometime, overall very good and would pay a yearly fee for it but its not always reliable and in Firefox and IE sometimes it takes a long time to download a video. Apart from that very good.

It is a fabulous App for Anyone who wants to get into the Upper echelons of
working with Video, Without all the Config'ing & Settings. I've looked at this package in the past, & the defaults are good for Anyone wanting to "Have a Go", & even the more pro who want to quickly Re-Code a one off for a M8.

FreeMake Obviously considered ALL aspects of the "probable" Users, & made this package usable by all ends of the Scale. Well Done..!! ... & have a 5*

Likes this App & Certainly gives good feedback..... "Well said my friend" ... (~_^)

OH...... & 2pass is "old hat" nowadays with the likes of K-Lite C-pack.
    I aint done 2pass since I used V-dub/G-Knot (great apps) .... 6+ yrs ago.

Find myself using Freemake's products more and more these days. Top notch software for audio and video converting and video downloading, and it's free.

Generally a great converter program, easy to use and very functional. Unless you're converting to DVD, then you seem to run into tons of audio sync issues.

Love the features and he GUI. As said, it's very easy to opt out of the bundled junkware. Having said that, it's inconsistent at converting files. For example, I have been compressing ~5gb MKV files down to ~2.5GB very successfully with no readily apparent loss in quality. Then, all the sudden one of my conversions will look terrible, and I have to do it over. That could very well be CUDA, which is fast but has well known problems. I wish Handbrake would copy this GUI, it's perfect. 1 star off for being inconsistent.

I gotta agree with plasticpig72 below... It's not that hard to uncheck the unwanted software this wants to try and install. What do you expect for free? It's just part of the hassle with freeware, and has been so for quite some time. Get used to it.

I went ahead and installed this on someone's PC I had recently worked on, since they already had .NET installed. Looking at this software again it really is good stuff for being free, and I do seem to remember it being relatively fast with the conversion process compared to, let's say, AVS Video Converter.

Don't like the fact that it doesn't have an option to NOT check for updates. So, I went ahead and told it to connect to a bogus proxy to remedy that situation. This was for that other person's PC, being that they were using Windows firewall, otherwise I could have just blocked access with a third-party firewall. I would not have liked this person bringing their PC back for me to fix again because they had updated this software and didn't uncheck the added junk it wanted to install with the update process.

Ok. Freemake did something with the menus on the 4.versions of this software. And in the process, did something with the stability of this software as well. Certain filetypes will not burn to DVD like they used to with the 3.1 versions of this software. Am not as concerned with the DVD menus as much as with the overall stability of this program in recent iterations. I personally went back to the 3.1 version of this software, and have had zero problems with crashes and so forth. Docking a couple of stars for that reason. And, the upsell for additional dvd menus, another tick downward.

Some of these review just do not match with my experience of this software.

It does everything I need it to do and more, a converter that allows scene to be removed. Converts to mp4 with a good many more options than other software I have used. More importantly the finished videos are exceptional good.

Lastly, why do some people find it so difficult to untick the boxes for the linked software you do not require. When you consider you are paying nothing for the software, then surely unticking a few boxes isn't that onerous a task.

It is on my PC and have used it. If I kept it, it must have served a purpose for me .
However, it does need Microsoft .NET 4 and I've had it with .NET. Too bloated, too many security fixes and reactivates an unwanted(and unneeded) service with each new security update.
Only 3 stars for needing .NET Now it's time to uninstall this software just for that reason. 4 stars for those that don't mind .NET.

Nice program, but it is not "Freeware". Most useful features have now been disabled until you pay for it. At the very best it is "Crippleware", at worst only a Demo. You can get around this by using ver or earlier.

This is a great program. I used it before and unlike other none-free converters it will sync video and sound perfectly during conversion.

And unlike what some people say It does not force you to install anything except the program itself. I update it regularly and no Spyware/Adware on my computer. But it is only Internet Installer, that is true. If you are tech savvy, you can copy actual downloaded installation file for further use.

One star deduction for fileforum itself. Download link points to the older version of the program.

Dont like the fact the download isnt the actual installer, but a downloader itself.
which includes bloatware, aka files not required by the program but further addons like smileys. why?
real installer is around 20mb and also includes bloatware, spyware, whatever you want to call it, yes it can be disabled before installing.
Havent actually used the program yet but for the above alone i'm giving it a low score.

This is a good video converter which can convert video files or DVD into almost any format of your choice. Some notes:

-During installation, choose the "custom" install option and uncheck any toolbars you don't want installed

    - Output quality depends on the quality of the source file and encoding bitrate. If you allow Freemake video converter to download directly from YouTube, your output may not be optimal. It seems to default downloading YouTube streams as 360P source files, even if a higher 480P, 720P or 1080P is available for the same YouTube video. I recommend to download the source file first using Freemake video downloader (at the highest bitrate available) and then converting using Freemake video converter.

As for encoding bitrate, for most purposes "auto" is best. However I've found encoding at H.264/768kbps a good compromise to achieve smaller file sizes at acceptable video quality.

The sister program "Freemake video downloader" allows you to download the source file at the highest bitrate allowed.

-Sometimes video converted directly from DVD contains scenes that drop in framerate during playback. If so, try to rip DVD locally first before conversion.

Have to agree that positives outweigh negatives. It is a no nonsense converter that simply works and the quality is very good. (my cpu usage on a quad core was below 50%). Been looking for this for years.

You must install Microsoft Framework.NET Client 4.0. Not accepted on my computers - it makes the start very slow ! No warning about this in the start of the install of the program either, the install just begin in the end without asking if i accept. Pure crap !

When cancelled Framework install and ended the program install it starts the browser without asking for my permission. Pure crap !

Have had a few glitches with this software in the beginning, mostly concerning writing video files to dvd. But in this recent version, seems that they have corrected the bug. This program is one of the best video software that I have used in a long time, hands down. Converts, rips, writes to dvd, top marks!
