Publisher's Description

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

I have to wonder if disabling your GMail account for the sake of 7GB of free storage is worth it? You can buy an 8GB USB thumb drive for less than $15 and *IF* you really need space a 1TB external USB drive can be gotten for $75 (or LESS on sale), that's about 140 times more space than GMail drive, the idea seems good but is it worth it to possibly Lose access to your GMail account, Personally, I think not!

To be clear, this doesn't make it a bad thing..but it's not Google: From Wikipedia,
Caveats
GMail Drive is an experimental package that depends on but is not provided by Google. Changes in Google's Gmail system may render GMail Drive temporarily or permanently inoperable.
The current GMail Drive does not support accounts that are with Google Apps. The Gmail Program Policies do not explicitly ban GMail Drive, shell namespace extensions, or the use of Gmail storage space for files other than e-mail.[2] Nonetheless, immoderate use of GMail Drive may trigger Google to temporarily suspend a Gmail account.[3]

When this first came out people were looking at Google's 'unlimited storage' for emails and thinking 'I'll have some of that !!!' - they were looking for ways to store anything in their email box..

I can not see the point of this now.

Why store documents in a Google email account when you can store documents, pictures, music etc in Google Docs which can be accessed via a variety of tools.

My favorite is http://www.gladinet.com which puts Google Docs, Microsoft SkyDrive, Box.net (and others) right in 'My Computer'

i read a lot about google being able to block this tool anytime,

but what really happens, is that they block your whole gmail account.

that is, if you upload or download too much data in a short period of time. so forgett about uploading your mp3 collection (as the screenshot seems to recommend)

fortunately they blocked my account for only one day. my google acount is too important to me, to play with it.

This "virtual drive" isn't exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it is still handy. Unfortunately it doesn't work with all GMail accounts, only the ones that end in gmail.com. If you are using your own domain you will have to sign up for an extra GMail account to use this shell. The only other issue I have with it is that you can't create and edit files directly on the drive - it is only meant to copy or move files there. Still, 7GB of hard drive storage on the Internet is a very reasonable price. And the drag and drop feature is very useful.

While I use and enjoy this program I would very much like to see it automatically split my files. It's a hassle to have to use a program like WinRar to split files larger than 10MB when this can be done on-the-fly through GMail Drive. As I always say: work smarter not harder!

I believe Banquo is wrong. The files are saved onto your gmail account. It sends an email to your gmail and the file is as an attachment. Your files would still be there in your gmail account. The thing that sucks about it is that you can only upload 10 mb of data at a time.

Banquo

Well at least Aegis69 knows what he is.

The only way they can block this tool is to disallow you from sending email to yourself.

Who cares how big my hard drive is, have you ever hear of backups. Yes I do maintain backups of my important stuff on other computers in the home, and on removable media. But what if my house burns down and everything is destroyed, I'll be real happy I have Gmail for an off site backups. And no they won't be looking at my data, at least not any time soon, cause I encrypt anything I care about keeping confidential.

It doesn't have to be installed on every computer you come in contact with in order to be useful. FYI, Gmail does have a web site where you can log in and read your email, and download attachments.

Mr. Aegis69,

'Is anybody this desperate for an extra gig of space when we have 400 gig hard drives for 150 bucks?'

What if people, say, wish to retrieve their files from any computer — for free and without any kind of expiry date? This is a useful tool, even for people with gargantuan hard drives.

The only thing I'd add to this utility would be an automatic splitting feature for files over 10MB. Nonetheless, it deserves a healthy 5!

wow.. someone has a chip on their shoulder.. and with no good reason! as no one that has commented here has left any kind of [retarded] remarks as you claim..

secondly, it's not for an extra gig, it's for 2.67+ gigs.. i like this program because it makes it easy to upload software so i could back it up, or download from another computer..

the functionality is there, and i wouldn't be surprised in the future, if google offered file storage, either on a sister site, or within gmail itself..

Aegis69

Aegis69 reviewed v1.0.9 on Dec 7, 2005

Ok all you 14 year olds with IQ's of 92, lets all whip out the word 'retarded' about 1000 times after my comment. Please, show us how brilliant YOU are by using a word like retarded to describe my OPINION.

And now for my OPINION....

Is anybody this desperate for an extra gig of space when we have 400 gig hard drives for 150 bucks?

Besides, you all know Google is going to find a way to ban this tool as soon as they get out of Beta. I'm giving it a 3 because the program works as advertised for now, but I feel this type of email misuse will quickly fall out of favor. The overall concept is poor.

Update: That might be useful if you were allowed to install this software on evvery computer you might wannna go to. Try that with your university account, I doubt you'll get very far.

Great small utility. I find it very useful.

Google changed the way gMail works for this program to ever really be usefull.

What I'd like to see done with gmail Drive is:
1.) Auto-Updates to keep up with Google.
2.) Some kind of auto-splitting feature, so that if you have a file thats larger than 10MB, then gMail Drive would auto-split it so that to the user, the file could still be seamlessly up/downloaded.

This program definitely works well. You'd probably want to setup another gmail account though for it because every file you upload creates a new email in your inbox. So don't bother using your email account for this unless you want a bunch of emails clogging your inbox. To the guy who posted about having the errors... I got the same errors when I tried uploading full directories rather than individual files and when I tried using secure HTTP.

are you guys actually getting this thing to work? Every version that I have tried does the same thing. It comes up with an error, and says something like this might be a temporary issue, but more than likely google changed their service to block this tool.
Am I doing something wrong? Are you suppose to UNINSTALL a previous version before installing a new one? Do you guys run it from windows explorer? I have tried that, and I have Xplorer2, and I have tried to do it through internet explorer. I have never got this tool to work. I think it would be sortof cool if I could get it to work. Please, someone, e-mail me if you know if I am doing something wrong, or know how to get it to work.

I give it 3 only for the author's hard work. But lets face it.. what files you wanna keep on gmail, when max attach size is 10mb? documents? music ? and.. ? hard drives now adays are enough to hold you data. A a free host some where, or better you own ftp server would do much better. Else, actual usability is below 3 rating.

To ryanyogan:
There is no way google can stop this except to shut off the service or give you less space. As long as it's available, and you can send/recieve files, this app will work. Will just need occasional fixes to keep it working when gMail changes.
Also, you talk about a measly 2 gigs, have you ever heard of backups? I use this on a daily basis to make backups of my really important data (You know, in case of some massive disaster that destroys my computer. i.e. hurricanes). Anyone who knows anything knows that off site backups are invaluable.

Great piece of software. Love the new features, mainly being able to open/save files directly from the folder. Also love the prompt updates to keep it working.

A few obvious additional features that would
be nice to see (if the author is reading this;
I can't find an email address for him)

- "Unlimitted" Filesize : Large files on harddrive could be cut up and stored as muliple files on gmail then reassembled when retreiving. (currently I do this manually with winrar)

- "Unlimited" Storage : Multiple GMail accounts could be supported; top level folders on Gmail Drive could represent Gmail accounts. When new Log-off/log-on could occur when selecting new top level folder/account. (currently do this manually by loging off/on to other gmail accounts when necessary)

Does anyone actually have this thing working?
And I know that you can ONLY add 10MB worth, but I have a question.. you know how w/ Winrar you can split a file up in 10MB pieces? If you was to do that, lets say split a 50MB file into (5) 10MB pieces, would you have to move EACH of them to the GMAIL DRIVE ONE AT A TIME? Or could you hilight all 5 pieces and send them that way??

If someone could shed some light on what the problem may be I would REALLY appreciate it.
Thanx
BTW I would give it a 5 if I could get it to work! Cause it's a pretty cool idea..

It does what it is said to.
However, files have to be smaller than 10 Mo, that is due to the limitation of mail sizes in Gmail.

This is by far one of the coolest extentions ever. The only problem it has is that it seems to have a little troubble with Folders, but thats no big deal.
Too awesome!

Great little program,
Saves having to carry a pen drive around when you can easily drag & drop files to & from Gmail in Windows Explorer.
When a file is saved to your GMail drive the program creates a mail in your inbox with the file as an attachment, the subject line of these created emails all begin with 'GMAILFS:'.
If you want you can then create a label for any mails with a subject beginning with 'GMAILFS' so you can easily bring up those files on computers which don't have 'GMail Drive' installed.

The 10MB file limit can complicate things a little for large files causing you having to split them up into 9MB chunks with an archiver program like WinRAR or IZArc but after all, GMail is primarily intended for email use.

GMail Drive is a novel way to capitalize on all that free online storage, a must for any GMail/Windows user.

Well, it worked for a while, then *poof*, no more access. Tried on several computers and included new install and also using different gmail accounts. Nothing. So, is gmail being filtered for gmail drive access??? Bummer.

Didn't like that drag and drop doesn't work the same way as one would expect in Windows -- a drag from the gmail drive does a delete -- oops.

This is a very useful piece of software, however, it should be made more stable. Uploading is often inaccurate, reading directories also (unfortunately) :(

At the end of the day, it is nevertheless very promising and I can recommend it to all gmail users.

This is the absolute best add-on for your Gmail. Yes, it is close to being the only add-on, but hey. I was using it with dial-up and it worked fast and efficient without problems. I am now using it with DSL and it is even better. If you have a Gmail account then use, if not then get a Gmail account. My files are never lost and I just had to make a filter to achive those files.

redhate

I've used it a few times. It works just fine. I heard from a friend that slashdot had an article about google not being to happy about and lowering file upload speeds. I uploaded some 10 meg files that took seconds which seems fast to me.

I really don't want Google shutting down my Gmail account because I use something like this. Why waste your time with something like this? Get a USB pen drive or something. Host a personal FTP site at home....many other things you can do.

I think Gmail Drive is a garbage idea.

Portal3

I don't see how this complies with Gmails Program Use Policy, in that your not allowed to:
"Modify, adapt, translate, or reverse engineer any portion of the Gmail Service;
Reformat or frame any portion of the web pages that are part of the Gmail Service."

Perhaps a POP3 Client is all you need?

Banquo

ITs a great little program. As far as how legal it is, I dont think it should be illegal. What all this program does is, it sends an email from you to you with an attachment (upto a max of 10MB that GMail allows) . So from that point of view , seems pretty legal tool to me .

Still... this kind of thing makes me jump for geek joy. I dont have to carry a jump drive. Now I have a mapped drive that makes it very simple to transfer files between home and work. No more emailing things to myself and wondering whether the attachment will get past my work's mail server's antivirus. Thanks!

A few bugs here and there (for example, can't search the GMail Drive), but I won't let that stop me from giving it 5/5! Download now if you have GMail!

Also to the review below, you can right-click anywhere in the GMail Drive folder and select 'Login As' to change the login or to stop it form auto-logging-in.
