I don't have a problem with toolbars themselves. Most of them anyways. Yes some of them are just adware/spyware junk.

My problem with them is that companies, like Google, install them automatically or if not automatically set to install by default.

They slow down the browser and I am sick of removing them all the time. Thankfully it has gotten a lot easier these days to remove them.

Thank God they are banned in Chrome. Now if only IE and FF would ban them too.

So let me get this straight:

I should install and run a toolbar that phones home continuously, allows tracking of my whereabouts and search criteria for ad purposes to be sold to the highest bidder, is a SERIOUS privacy violation from a company with the worst privacy record imaginable and in general is just a candy-coated piece of malware?

    Right.

And the worst part is that so many users are running (not walking) down the "Too Stupid To Live" road to install and run it.

It's a pity there is no negative rating.

Avoid anything and everything form this company. As a security analyst, I can only way that their practices are despicable.

I agree with the gist of most positive reviews:

Google Toolbar is a 'must' install for any system... and this latest update a 'must' get.

If anything, the toolbar may now have too many features-- some get 'hidden' under the >>, so I'd like to see more and plenty of customizability for individual users- esp. the drag & drop kind.

I use software to prevent toolbars such as this one from infecting my system. Too bad anti-spyware software doesn't detect it, probably because it's Google. This piece of junk is ubiquitous. For example, it's hard to even install hardware drivers these days without accidentally installing Google Toolbar. I rate it a 2 for usefulness (my browser does everything it does) and downgrade it 1 for it trying to force its way into my system by being everywhere.

Obviously elliott_nally is reviewing something he's not actually installing or using. It's silly to say that browsers already do whatever this toolbar can. Ok, so mail a page to gmail from your browser. Or find the next occurrence of a search term in the page you're viewing. Or highlight the search terms you used in a page. The list goes on. If you have something intelligent to say, please say it. Otherwise don't waste people's time. Personally I find this toolbar is a must install. Very useful especially for gmail users. You can email a page or selection of a page to your gmail. This is most useful, since Firefox lacks this feature and IE only integrates with nonweb based email clients like Outlook (I believe). Also, love the ability to search for the next occurrence of a search term. Personally I pull all the buttons I like out of the toolbar and disable the bar itself. This is likely easier in Firefox than IE.

Google has considerable resources that it has decided to dedicate to the development of new and useful tools, and what do they encourage? I like the toolbar. The bookmarks menu rocks and custom buttons are quite nice. If you're a Googler (i.e. Gmail user, Calendar user, etc.) this thing is a must.

Development is going forward very slowly though. One small step after another. You'd think with Googles manpower and all the smart people there they'd code the ultimate toolbar during the lunchbrake. Probably there are only one or two people working on it.

You are aware of the fact that google toolbar is the worst scamware, malware and spyware piece of shut ever? Apart from the fact that it reports back to google about your search behaviour, it also messes around with your system, changing for example the URLSearchHooks in the registry. I am using the AimAtSite search bar for IE, it's very comfortable. You can add any search engines, from any site, then simply write a keyword into the search field, select the site from the dropdown menu, and the browser immediately sends the request to the site. I am using it to search the MS knowledge database, google images, vcdquality movie releases, bittorrent releases on isohunt, subtitles for movies, bbc, cnn, reuters etc etc etc. It's not spyware plus it doesn't mess around with your system

I give 4 to google toolbar just because of one thing that i think is missing to be a perfect toolbar, the tabs.
If google toolbar had tabs capability i would give 5 points.
It´s true that the IE7 is almost here but for IE6 they could do the google toolbar with tabs capability.
Besides that it really is a very good toolbar.

I tried Coppernic and found it to be pretty neat. The toolbar does work with 64, using the 32bit browser for IE. (IE7 or IE6 or FireFox) Coppernic also works great as a desktop search tool.

Bookmarks is the awnser to Windows Live! Roaming Favorates. You can access them from any browser via the toolbar or on Google's / MSN's website.

I have to admit MSN's is better. I can import and export my IE / MSN Explorer bookmarks. Google makes you add them one by one. MSN is ahead of the game on this one.

but also has a few little ones that you may not notice, the best features are-

    Address Bar Browse by Name
    Pop-up Blocker(doesn't conflict with XP's version)
AutoFill (a lot better than IE's routine)
    SpellCheck
    WordTranslator
AutoUpdate (although i've failed to see this work)

This is a great toolbar, very useful and clean. In the past a minor annoyance was that it keeps enabling Autolink every time I upgrade instead of keeping my disabled setting, stop trying to force this on me. Now there is no way to hide the Desktop Search advertisement on the bar, this is not a good trend.

In the past, Autolink enabling on upgrades was an annoyance, but I still rated it a 5. But with the addition of not being able to hide the Desktop Search ad button, I'm jumping to rating it a 3.

Don't force things on me, give me my options and I'll be a happier person.

*edit* I figured out how to get rid of the Desktop Search ad button, click on it and then choose No Thanks and it will be removed. I am bumping this up to a 4, because it is a unnecessary hoop and still want to see Autolink keep it's setting on upgrades.

This is a very nice and useful addition to an IE-based browser (it works some IE shell browsers as well). I give this product a 3 simply because it is an IE-only product.

While firefox has a couple googlebar-like extensions made by 3rd party developers, I would prefer getting this from google themselves - it integrates better.

Until Google recognizes that Firefox is a very popular browser too, this will be the highest rating they will get from me for any IE-only products they produce.

I love Google. I tried the previous beta release, and thought it was great except for one change from the Google 2.0 tool bar which is really annoying. When you work from a daughter window that is less than full screen, you have no access to the "Search the Web" button (now a capital G) to the right of the address window. You have to maximize the daughter window before you can run a search, then restore it to default size.

I don't know if that's been done on purpose, or if it's just something that got broken. But I need to have at least the >> to the right of the Google address window so I can access the buttons and run a search without having to maximize the window. Has this been fixed in the new beta?

This is a tool which Google toolbar turns any "triggerwords" into links that don’t belong to the website you are looking at. In other words hyperlinks is not unlike Microsoft SmartTags, a venture that turned into a fiasco because the users turned against the idea. If you want to know more about Google toolbars Autolinks, here is a place to get a bit of the idea: http://www.betterbadnews.com/22 - so apart from all the good features in Google Toolbar, the Autolink hype makes me to give the toolbar only the lowest rating. The "Advanced Options" also only submit anonymous and only the neccessary info. They can be turned off at anytime easily. Also this toolbar provides more functionality than any other out there available (MSN, Yahoo, A9 etc). It was also the first one to provide good functionality and not bloat marketing buttons. ¿What else ya want, a taxi ride home too?
Let's see: let me give it a low rating because it doesn't have a bundled spyblocker, av, firewall, word processor, graphics manipulator(all for free, btw).....

And as far as spyware, as long as you take the time to setup your security zones properly I get virtually none. About as much as I would with Firefox actually. Usually just some harmless tracking cookies.

I agree, the popup-blocking functions of the Google Toolbar are no longer necessary with XP SP2, but that's not what I wanted in this toolbar anyway. Anyone who wants the entire internet at their fingertips knows that Google is the best search engine out there, and this toolbar puts it within reach without requiring the extra step of navigating to google.com. When you use Google as often as I do, this saves tons of time, and it's definitely worth it!

Easy, their text based adsense ads won't be blocked but their competitor's popup-type ads will so you have to ask yourself: is this really to help internet users or a ploy to block their competitor's ads?

The definition of "spy" is to watch secretively. Google goes out of their way to inform users about the home-phoning behavior of the Google Toolbar. They put it in the privacy policy on the site, they mention it clearly when the software is installed, and they even warn the user every time an applicable advanced feature is enabled. So, Google Toolbar certainly does not qualify as "spyware". It isn't spying on you if warning after warning is shoved in your face, and if the behavior is not malicious. And none of the Google "spyware" whiners have established otherwise. So _SHUT UP ABOUT IT ALREADY!_

Change the value to 0 and it will stop counting pop ups. Useful if you don't want people to make an inferences on how much time you're searching the web (specifically on certain sites that tend to have more popups that others). You can also make the same change to the history key to prevent it from storing your history information although you have to exit/restart IE to get it to clear.

lets stay on topic for a sec: Though this toolbar has some basic functionality, it is in essence spyware (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,904096,00.asp) and it doesn't add anything to IE that you can find in Opera and Mozilla.

hey k3of4, did you even follow the link I gave you? It isn't coz ad-aware doesn't delete it that it isn't spyware. Anyway I'll let you IE users play around with this thang while I just "g search" my way to google using opera, in the mainwhile pushing f12 to block those bloody popups... happy browsing! PS: :-)

Hmmm... was previously using 2.0.88-big, uninstalled it, installed this version and it crashed after install was done. But, restarted my browser and the toolbar is working fine. Not sure what all that was about, but it's working like a charm so far! As in my previous reviews of Google Toolbar, this is a must-have addition to IE. For the pop-up blocker ALONE it is worth the very quick download, but you should find the other functions just as useful. The blogger function is very cool if you use Blogger, I only wish it worked for other blog services like Livejournal (which I use).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled this ver. 5 times, and every time I only get the google label and the search box. No other buttons at all or any options to add them. As soon as I reinstall the current non-beta ver. I see everything. ??

This is a good enhancement to IE. It's not a "spyware toolbar" as stated below, like a Xupiter thing or something like that. It survives your Ad-Aware scans because it's a legitimate search toolbar. :)

I enjoy the popup blocking immensely, although some other functions (like the blogger button) are fairly useless, but easily removed. It's not the miracle worker and it doesn't make IE into Moz Firebird or Opera. It does make searching easy and adds some other niceness. I'm all in favor.

Excellent toolbar, a must for any IE user that uses google (and who in this day and age doesn't use google!?) The popup blocker is EXCELLENT, I love it. I use Mozilla Firebird off and on, but IE is still my preferred browser. Now, maybe google can add some tabbed browsing functionality to IE and it will be perfect :)

wtf styckx! Sorry for the foul language, but what you say doesn't make sense. IE hasn't been innovated the last three years and you think this spyware toolbar can bring bloatware IE to an equal level of Mozilla or Opera? Think again man.

Here's what I can do with Opera that you can't with IE: tabbed browsing, customize toolbars and menus ad infinitum, skin my browser, e-mail or post to newsgroups, open all bookmarks in one folder, block popups, search from address bar and lots more. Maybe you should try it once ;-)

I do LOVE the Google Toolbar, though I wish that they would create a version for Mozilla. The one for IE, though, is indispensible. It takes little space and almost no additional resources, makes it very easy to do a spur-of-the-moment search, and makes it easy to locate the search terms on the pages that have been returned. The fact that it searches ALL of the Google areas (web, groups, images, etc.) is particularly nice. I've had no trouble at all, and honestly I can't think of anything that it is lacking (OTHER THAN A MOZILLA VERSION, hint, hint....)

Doesn't work with Net Captor. Eeeeeh...no big deal. In Net Captor's address bar you can type "g" (for google) and then what you wish to search for. Example "g nero 5.5.9.0" brings up Google and all the hits on Nero. So I can do without it.

Very useful little program, and since (IMHO) google is the best search engine and it is my favorite one to search for things it is the perfect enhancement for the IE, Opera did include that function much earlier, well but I guess Microsoft needed a little help.
I don't see the spyware... all it does is it collects the URL's you visited, but not user-related, well of course it spies for your URL's, but oh well I think I can handle that.

Perhaps those complaining about spyware neglected to read the part that said "READ THIS IT'S NOT THE USUAL YADA YADA YADA" In that document it states that information about the URL you are visiting is sent to PageRank for automatic ranking of pages and that you can choose to install without that option. It's not sending personal information per se, just url data and you can disable it.

One IE toolbar I can actually love - very useful for quick searches of Google & Google Groups (usenet archive). Plus, you can view an older, cached copy of almost any page with a click of a button. Check it out if you enjoy Google, which I think is simply the best search engine out there given it's endless index and page cacheing!
