Agreed that the software itself is OK, but the license is deceiving. The vendor apparently means that the BETA version is free of charge, but most beta software is always free of charge.

Dougau is correct. I don't care what the author's web site says (and it does say "License type: Freeware"), the actual license agreement upon installing the software says:

    Evaluation and Testing
This is not free software. Subject to the terms below, you are hereby licensed to use this software for evaluation and testing purposes without charge for a period of 30 days (or 100 monitoring sessions). After this period you are required to download updated beta version (if one is available). If the beta testing program is finished, you cannot continue using the beta version and must either download and install the trial version or purchase the full version of the software.

I don't normally rate down software for anything unrelated to application quality, but I'll make an exception here for what seems to be pure deception.

This software is not free, and it’s ashamed that Beta News allows itself to be abused in this way. According to the License Agreement, you may “evaluate” the so called beta version for a period of 30 days after which you must upgrade to the so called “non beta version” I believe this should be called trialware or shareware, but its not freeware. The reason I rate so low is I don’t want to get use to using a program that is suppose to be free only to turn around and have to pay who knows how much for its continued use whenever the author sees fit to invoke the license agreement and start charging for his free program. While the site says HexEditor 2.3 was free, the actual home page says "HDD Hex Editor 3.0 beta has been released for public beta testing"
