This s*** ain't worth anyone's time unless they pay for other things on logmein i suppose, then it will work as is used to. (fairly easy but slowly)

For them that used Tunngle i say, sorry it's dead...

So only thing I can recomend now are OpenVPN, or what i prefer to use SoftEtherVPN as it's alot easyer to configure yet more powerful in the end than OpenVPN. Cheers!

Spend some time with OpenVPN.

First it went from 10 to 5 free users and I thought it was bad. Now LMI has made many of their other products paid-only. Not sure if this one is still free for personal use or not since I don't use it anymore, but if it is, I doubt it will be for long.

There is no reason to pay for 99% of the functionality in the products LMI sells. If you pay, it's for ease of setup.

Used to be great, now it's junk used to try and sell you something that can be had elsewhere for free.

Functionality is still good, but LogMeIn recently reduced the number of members that can belong to a network from 16 to 8 without "upgrading" to the non-free version. When the company was sold to LogMeIn, Hamachi creator Andy Pankrat provided assurances that the free service would continue undiminished. This is no longer the case.

Worse, pricing on the paid model has changed from a one-time fee for the software to an annual subscription depending on the number of members in your network.

This software is incredible, has a great gui, and is very handy. However After installing it did somewhat corrupt my wireless driver. I think it may just be for certain wireless cards that it does this. I installed this on two machines, one with a broadcom card (dont remember the model) and it worked fine, and another with an atheros ar50009 a/g/n card. the atheros cards driver was corrupted to the point where it worked but it took a couple minutes to load up google fully. but i just had to re-install the atheros driver and all is working now. I can say that i will be using hamachi again but when there are less bugs.

Its far from perfect, but I couldnt imagine not having it on all of my machines. I love being able to listen to my itunes library wherever i am. Network browsing is extremely flaky, a lot of times it doesn't work at all and sometimes it works wonderfully. It has some major problems with wireless networks for some reason. Your connection to them becomes unstable at times unless you disable hamachi. maybe this update will address that issue since there is no changelog.

I have had Hamachi for some time now, but recently, I deleted it.
First off, it would never let me browse the internet without using
hamachi, which made me very pissed off.
Second, I have deleted it, now I cannot browse the internet at all.
All it says is "Aquiring IP address." I tried network connections at
wireless, at hotels, and at starbucks, but no matter what, it always says Aquiring IP address.
Also, I did try to use a network, but it wouldn't work even with
hamachi, which led me to deleting it. And I don't have a virus on my computer, I did multiple virus scans.
I'm giving it a 3 because I can never get on without hamachi, but it did work.

Dudeboyz, in one of your other "reviews" you claim to have been using computers for 30 years. Well, if this were true, you would know that not all projects can stay free. Some have to move on and pay bills. If you truely understood the software industry, you would know this. This is a great program and serves its purpose very well. The premium service is good for those who need it. Dont knock a program if you dont know what you are knocking or how long said "knocks" have existed.

@DudeBoyz: I don't know when you started using this program but it must of been recently. Those limitations you pointed out between Free/Premium have been there for more than a year.

An excellent program, (even the Free version), that enables you to create a no-hassle vpn - MUCH easier than trying to set up MS's vpn or even OpenVPN, (which is easy also).

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.0.2.1 on Apr 9, 2007

Crap. They got bought out.

There is a FREE version and a Premium version.

The free version is a crippled version of the Premium version.

You have to pay for a continual license for the Premium version. Not a One Time Fee - you have to keep paying, month after month, every six months or every year. Per Client.

1 Month License = $4.95 per client, clients 1-5
6 Month License = $23.70 per client, clients 1-5
1 Years License = $39 per client, clients 1-5

Why can't people just let Free programs stay Free programs?

ARGH!

Here is the comparison between the crippled FREE version and the Premium:

http://www.hamachi.cc/compare.php

You can see that the FREE is lacking some serious features.

Among other things, FREE is Limited to 16 users, while the Premium allows for 256. The FREE lacks a network lock, member services, the ability to appoint a Network Administrator and use Network Messages.

Crippled to say the least.

Great stuff.

Using 1.0.0.62 in my small business. Speed is v-e-r-y slow when network software opens and manipulates shared files on a mapped hard drive through my Hamachi VPN. It's so slow that it reminds me of 2,400-baud modems back in the 1980's.

I see where most of you are raving about speed - but only with games.

Anyone have experience actually MAPPING DRIVES and sharing data files and folders on a distant pc?

Psychlone

I really don't know where to start...so I won't.

I'll just say that what you WANT to do is use UltraVNC OVER Hamachi. You need to use both unless you want your sessions viewable and your password captured by someone using a VERY rudimentary tool. VNC sends everything in the clear; no encryption.

So if you're remote desktopping over the internet, install Hamachi on both machines and just use the 5.x.x.x IP address given by Hamachi in your UltraVNC viewer instead of the one you're using now.

Check out the Hamachi forums for more detailed info; there's plenty of people doing exactly this, myself included.

Hamachi is by far the easiest VPN program I've ever used. It's only limitation when compared to traditional VPNs is that it's peer-to-peer only.

Probably more my fault than Hamachi's...but I wasn't looking for an ap that VPNs...I needed to SEE the Remote desktop as if I were sitting in front of it...at good speeds.
Hamachi didn't work for me in this respect.
I have 5 Point of Sale terminals and 1 Back of House Server that all share 7 Printers (5 Thermal Receipt, 1 Remote BOH, and 1 BOH Office) as well as all the networking involved in all this.
So to keep it all straight, and without using the integrated Remote Desktop in XP, I decided to go 3rd party.
Well, Hamachi didn't work as a zero config.
Fortunately for me, I found UltraVNC. It's EXACTLY what I needed.
Now, I have all my Point of Sale systems, my Back Of House Server, AS WELL as my home computer all connected for updates/syncing.

Excellent, elegant & simple VPN solution! Secure, simple and fast. Set up is a breeze. There is no other reason (other than extreme power users) to look at other VPN solutions.

Only recommendation for users - take the time to install it as a service on your host machine. (assuming this is why you are using Hamachi)

Great solution from north of the 49th - great job Hamachi!

Absolutely brilliant. This program shines in so many ways I don't even know where to begin. You certainly need to keep in perspective what the intention of this utility is. It's not meant to be a network to network connector. If there is one week spot, it's when the backend is over capacity or down all together. This program has made my life much much easier in terms of being able to easily provide remote support to home users.

truman

truman reviewed v1.0.0.54 Beta on Apr 7, 2006

mjm01010101, Hamachi IS a private networking system, it is *designed* to be that way. Their server is not in the middle per se, and it does not require peers to trust it. If you'd bothered to look at their security specs and if you were competent enough to comprehend it, it would've been obvious to you. This has also been discussed many times on their forums and in other places including p2p and cryptography maillists.

The MAZZTer

The MAZZTer reviewed v1.0.0.54 Beta on Apr 7, 2006

Mediation servers are needed in order to allow all users to establish outgoing connections (if they have firewalls, routerS) and still connect to each other without worrying about port forwarding. Without such servers it is impossible for the users to connect to each other.

I have a suggestion for the Hamachi dev: Instead of completely using IPs all the time, build DNS support into the mediation servers and set them as the DNS server in the hamachi connection settings.

Then, each user can be connected to by their username (provided they're in your group of course!). IE: themazzter would resolve to my Hamachi IP. Much easier than 4 octects (unless a user is called sexigurl74092757026506265).

Kompressor

Kompressor reviewed v1.0.0.53 FC20 on Mar 22, 2006

I purchased Counter Strike: Source outright and the Steam content servers aren't free to operate.

Besides, the Hamachi server/s should only be used for the handshake only if/when it's necessary, instead of every time the software is launched. After that it should be direct P2P until IPs change.

Also, Hamachi only creates a VPN for the workstation it's installed on. It won't share your entire network like a traditional VPN can.

Hamachi is 100% dependent on the mediation server which goes down often.

It's still a great program though.

Prospero424

Prospero424 reviewed v1.0.0.53 FC20 on Mar 22, 2006

He means that you can't purchase the software outright, but have to buy time-limited licenses (one year, I believe). Of course, this is pretty much the rule these days rather than the exception.

Also, it makes sense for Hamachi because it really is a service as well as a piece of software; the back-end bootstrap servers and the associated bandwidth certainly aren't free to operate, so it's a bit of a silly complaint.

Overall, it's a very good, easy way to create a peer-to-peer VPN network that can actually be more robust than traditional VPN methods and offers expanded functionality as well.

There are also OSX and Linux versions available. There's no GUI for the OSX version yet, but somebody wrote a Dashboard Widget that offers most of the functionality you get with the fully-skinned Windows version as long as you are capable of installing Hamachi in a command-line environment initially.

Plus, both the software and the nominal service are free for personal use.

Mmmmmmmm. Yellowtail.

Kompressor: Steam really isn't a fair comparison at all because a) Valve had money from previous projects already rolling in when they implemented it b) Counter Strike Source isn't exactly the only product they offer. Oh, and c) Valve too is moving to a subscription/episodic system. That's what Steam was built for, after all.

Trust me, I'm REALLY not a big fan of the software "subscription" business model in general. However, in Hamachi's case it really does make sense from a business perspective.

But if you DO want to buy it, he's eventually going to offer a hardware product with the software that runs the mediation servers built in, so you can manage your own private network without relying on his back end.

Also, if you have any suggestions or questions about it, please head to the forums over at www.hamachi.cc. Alex is probably the most responsive and involved software author I've ever seen on a forum.

But yeah, the mediation servers have been going down WAY too often lately. The good news is that the vast majority of the downtime is planned and annouced ahead of time, but I too hope this stops soon.

derekaw, if your bank blocks UDP traffic, Hamachi won't help you unless you get a paid account. Hamachi 1.0 includes support for "relayed tunnels" but free Hamachi accounts are limited to low-speed relays (mostly good for chat and pinging). Only paid accounts will have access to high-speed relays, and Hamachi's claim of 97% success is based on including capabilities which are only usable by paid accounts.

In certain home/gaming scenarios, Hamachi is definitely easy to use and solves a real problem, but for most of the scenarios addressed by traditional VPN tunnels, Hamachi doesn't cut it. It's not that the software is flawed, just that it is being described with superlatives that are overblown and exaggerated. As long as your needs are simple and your expectations low, Hamachi works painlessly.

Simply said. It Rocks.

My buddies and I were even able to play an OLLLDDD version of Risk that only had a "LAN Play" option within the game. Since Hamachi made our computers think we were all on the same LAN, we were able to play it (after only a few headaches).

How does this thing work anyway? There must be some middle point to the software... some server somewhere that allows people to bypass each others' firewalls? Maybe it is just magic? If anyone knows how it works, let us know :)

I did notice that when I downloaded this a few months ago, it didn't work too easily. I had to tinker with it for a few days here and there. This time, after a new format, I downloaded it and it worked the first time my buddies and I ran it. Who knows.

Party on party people.

TheRecklessWanderer

TheRecklessWanderer reviewed v0.9.9.8 Beta on Jun 17, 2005

It's a good product and it does what it says it will do. However, if one of the IPs change (seems to happen most in a LAN DHCP configuration) it can break the connectivity. I have had this happen enough that for me the product is really not usable, which is too bad because I could really use it in the specific environment in which I work.

I've used Hamachi over the last 10 or so beta releases. It keeps getting better...I'm already very impressed with this program. I also have not expierenced any problems with the software that some of the other reviewers have mentioned. It's worked almost flawlessly, except for getting dropped by the mediation server a couple of times during a game. But thats to be expected. It is beta software, after all. And beta software is meant to be a "Proof of Concept" This program to me is (potentially) one of the best.

I do agree with some of other reviewers that this program needs more configurable options especially with the network settings and be able to know whats going on with the connection.

I also like its simplistic design interface, not alot of buttons to confuse some people. Purpose Built. Not Flashy. In my opinion, what a piece of software should be. But this is just my 2 cents.

zee7

zee7 reviewed v0.9.9.3 Beta on May 9, 2005

I realize this is a beta, but this program is bad news. It totally hosed my network connections on two differnt computers and is impossible to remove cleanly. I was forced to reformat because it screwed up my settings and wouldn't release control of my LAN even after I unistalled it, then used GoBack and RegCrawler. Installation was very simple, but there is no opportunity to see exactly what it is doing to your system so if something goes wrong, you'll be S.O.L.

Not recommended.

I installed it. It added a network adapter and after a few minutes I had a new ip address next to my default (after my firewall asked if it could have access). After that I could not browse the internet. This prog needs more controls & settings so that you know exactly wtf it is doing & how to revert to standard default LAN. When it actually works instead of ruining your network connection, which is very touchy, I will try again-Like 6 months at least. This prog has too much control & not enough explanation

This VPN client is very sound and simple to use. The Hamachi team have been very helpful with any issues the software has during the beta phase and have updated the software as often as they can regarding fixes. If anyone is looking for a way to have a VPN over the net should look into this product. Great for traversing standard NATs. This application should get a 5 all the way around; specially for it being a beta.

I've been following Hamachi since the first beta builds and they've come a long way in quite a short space of time. Everything that I've requested has been actioned. They've added more information pages to their website, added a support forum and fixed several issues.

As for the actual application, Hamachi is a doddle to install and setup. If you've ever setup a VPN yourself, you'll appreciate how easy Hamachi is. So far I've used it with my parents and several non-techie friends - guiding them through the installation over the phone - and I've had NO problems with it.

Once running, Hamachi acts the initiator of a secure tunnel, and 9 times out of 10, it works flawlessly.

I've seen people complaining that there's a build every day, well, you don't have to upgrade every day, but if you want to keep as bug-free as possible in this BETA stage, then best upgrade.

I had no problems using this. It would receive five stars if it provided help files (which I myself would not need).

I use this because for some reason I can't get Microsoft's Networking to work properly.

This software does NOT deserve only one star because someone could not figure out how to use it. Have you tried other networking software to compare the ease of use to Hamachi?

I agree that it will probably be shareware once the final version comes out so anyone using this should keep a copy of the latest free version.

The concept is a sound one and I really, really hope they get all the bugs fixed. System admin beware! There is a massive need for this kind of app in the work place, but it poses a threat to network security. I'm using it to hook up to my home network and it works pretty well. Friends have tried it and had a variety of problems - problems setting up a network, or connecting. I'm sure in time, they'll iron out these problems. Which brings me to my second complaint - the information on their website - or lack of. They really should have some more technical info and a forum so that users can discuss problems with the developers.

I'll keep an eye on this. Wonder how long it'll be before they start charging for the service.

Even though the program didn't work for 4 seperate people on different types of networks, we all tried getting it to work and failed.

I like it so far, but I'd like it even more if the network connection would appear unter "Control panel -> Network connections" as this would increase the ease of configuration (no need of regedit to enable/disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for example) and would add the possibility to enable the Windows Firewall on the connection.

I like this program but I do miss the heavy encryption of waste. There is more chance of an outsider guessing his/her way onto your network or reading what your doing by sniffing out the packets or something while this same thing on waste is near imposable with 4096 bit encryption and insane huge network passwords.

However this program has a far more simple way of managing the network then waste. I would like to see both pros of these diffrent programs combined one day.
