Hide Folders XP 2.9.5

Publisher's Description:

Hide Folders XP is a security tool for hiding your sensitive folders from other users. Most everyone has files or folders on their computer that they do not want to share with others. The best way to protect your personal information is to make the folders in which they reside visible and available only to you. It does exactly that, and it does it easily and well.

Latest Changes:

  • Improved compatibility with large font settings (120 DPI)
  • Improved user interface compatibility with Windows Vista
  • Windows Vista 64-bit editions support

It's not terribly secure!! It took me 3 minutes to break the security with absolutely no tools.

Basically, the utility transforms folders into rootkit (hidden folders). The problem is that the content of the hidden rootkit folder can be copied to an unhidden folder just using windows commands.

1. Open registry. Look key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HFXP2\Parameters. All hidden "rootkit" folders by Hide Folders XP are listed there with lame encryption (one caracter shifted to the left!). So if I created an "hidden" folder named c:\coco, I will have this entry D;]dpdp]04. (The number 04 is the level of security (01=none, 02=protected, 03=hidden, 04=both)

2.Now that you know the name of the hidden folder, open cmd and type the following:

xcopy c:\coco c:\coco1 /e /h

There you go. All your files are copied, unhidden, unprotected.

I have NO programming or OS knowledge and defeated the utility easily with no tool.

Now, an utility that creates rootkits without telling it is not especially well-advised considering it is used mainly by virus and trojans. I understand the "secrecy" lies in the fact the hidden folder IS a rootkit, but this is not a very secure way to hide private data and rootkit removers may delete these precious "hidden" folders. So it's not only unsecure, but also dangerous.

Finally, asking 30$ for such tool is, IMHO, a ripp-off.

Last time I use this program is 2 year ago. Hide, scan disk (Error checking in Windows XP) then boom. It's unhide. You may want to check it.
NTFS is better.
