Publisher's Description

HijackThis is a general homepage hijackers detector and remover. It scans for all objects which may be affiliated with Web Browser activity. StartList scans the system for all objects that are in all startup sections of the registry. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites.

An excellent program, very useful in the right hands, very dangerous in the wrong hands.

Note that is not a criticism of the program. There really is no way to make a program that's powerful and yet safe for novices, other than asking 'are you sure ?' on every mouse click - and that still doesn't make it safe against the ones who will ignore the warnings. The best thing a novice can do is admit they only know so much and get someone who knows more than they do.

"It used to remove nasty spyware, but it is VERY dangerous! " So they have to make the software securefull for new users. So should be used only by people who know what they doing.Think about people who dont know what they are doing. Make it more understanble for who are new. And put many languages in it.

One of the best PC forensic tools on the market.
@comeoffit:

This does more than just scan startup locations. it displays in detail all browser-helper objects (BHO) which are the source of most scumware, drive-by installs and annoying browser toolbars. It displays any changes to your browser's home page, start page and search and allows you to restore to original values. It also displays any non-microsoft services that run at startup as some parasites install themselves this way.

It also creates a backup of any changes so you can undo them if removed accidentally. I don't know how 793K could be considered bloatware as there are similar utilities out there that are 10 times the size that do less.

I agree with uzi this is defintely not for novices but has helped me in the past in identifying and removing crudware where Spybot S&D, Spyware Terminator, AVG and others have failed.

A very useful and powerful tool, but novice users should practice caution and get help from power users.

The automatic assistance service by Trendmicro is still not as useful as the one by hijackthis.de, and even the one by hijackthis.de does not suffice.

Nevertheless, it is a powerful tool.

I always found this to be a near-useless, buggy, overrated, simple utility. Oh wow, it scans startup locations. Why the hell would Trend Micro pay for this?

I really can't understand all the adverse comments about this. So it's been taken over by Trend Micro, so bloody what. It's hardly become bloatware. For me it's still a good app which I've used for years and it's about time that the original developers got a reward for all their years of great work. Nuff said :)

its a life saver, best thing to get rid of those .exe programs that dont fully uninstall not to mention still great for removing viruses.

to the guy who said something about mcafee, mcafee went down the crapper with norton. u want good pay antiviruses update to bitdefender or antivir. mcafee killed site advisor. mcafee site advisor listed aluria as a green site even tho they just agreed to exclude certain spyware vendors to be shown in the antispyware applications. trend micro hasnt killed nothing. that cwsheddar isnt need anymore since all antispyware programs detect it now so why keep making it?

News of it being sold is at the page above. A shame too, last time he sold CWShredder to Trend Micro they quit developing and updating it. Seems HijackThis will go to the same. Merijn should have made this application open source. Getting it away from Visual Basic by open sourcing would have been a great step forward.

dzjepp

dzjepp reviewed v2.00.0 Beta on Mar 12, 2007

What happened here? Did Merijn.org sell this app to Trend?

But as always I have to rate HijackThis very high. It's one of the best ways of cleaning a completely hosed IE install.

EDIT: The Merijn homepage says nothing of this. I wonder if Trend just copied the old trusted HijackThis without consent. Which would be really lame.

Mcafee flags this and when you quit it the process still hangs around so not sure what Trend Micro has done to this once great app. UPXing it does get rid of McAfee from flagging it but then Windows says its not signed.

HiJackThis is an excellent program. It is mainly for advanced users that are fully aware of what each item is and whether or not they need to be there. But for the advanced user this is a must tool to checkup on your system from time to time. Not only making it so simple to remove crap from the computer that other tools miss, but can be used by "newbies" to scan and save a log to send to another "advanced user" for help purposes. I help many people with common to major problems by sikmply asking them for a HiJackThis log and telling them what to keep and what to remove.

This is from the authors site: (http://www.merijn.org/)

[Update] It seems McAfee is detecting the new HijackThis version as W32/Generic.worm!p2p. It is not the first time this happened and probably not the last time either. There is no virus in HijackThis. McAfee incorrectly detects the PE compression method I use on all of my programs as a generic Kazaa worm. I will try to contact McAfee about this and see if the incorrect detection can be removed in their next update.

It did it to me freaked me out!

Great tool, I recommend this to everyone with computer problems - which is everyone.

Simple enough for anyone to use since you can simply check all items, and click fix.
I get a lot of crap from "experts" that is a bad practice, but I have never had any problems or complaints doing exactly that on every one of the 50+ computers I have tried this on.

bourgeoisdude

bourgeoisdude reviewed v1.99 on Dec 15, 2004

A great tool for fixing computers. Only thing is that I cannot simply recommend it to your average Joe home user as they will have no clue how to use it. If you work in a computer repair shop, though, this is definately a must-have.

1. Small in size
2. Fast
3. Effective
4. Free
5. Safe (backs up changes, or warns when it can't)

A perfect 5! Should be a mandatory part of any windows installation - as an admin tool.
