On first start, the program forced a entire HD scan which cant be stopped, other than going task manager and killing the process.

I agree, this is one really good program. Even this free standard version is handy. Very much like Locate. It has one small flaw (the other SowSoft programs share the same weakness), though: there is no keyboard shortcut to jump to the search box before or after a search is executed, which means lots of mouse work.

I've used this free program for years. It does what it says it can do, ie find files or folders in an instant. To edit the files from the interface you need their paid version, Effective File Search. I haven't seen any desktop search engine come close to the thoroughness of this program.(not Google, MSN or Copernic etc)
This new version is even faster and there is no lengthy indexing. What's to lose? Try it.
