Publisher's Description

Intel Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware. This allows the operating system to show the correct name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.

If you "brick" your motherboard by installing this then you did something VERY VERY WRONG. It works just fine and is essential for a lot of features on every motherboard that uses INTEL CHIPSETS.. so.. not for AMD people..

DO NOT INSTALL unless you have a Intel Board as that is what Intel web site states.
I have just bricked my Asus Rampage II and can not get to post nor if does start reading bios will not get me to point that I can enter bios, also will not boot from CD.
So DO NOT INSTALL !

A three meg file is quite a few .inf's, so I suspect it
does not just contain the newer ones.
Previous editions of this have been useful to me
but if I run it on this laptop what's BIOS doesn't
allow 1920x1080 video output it will overwrite the
customizations that have the laptop putting out
1919x1080 video that looks perfect on my 1920

Intel releases these updates for their own brand boards first in every scenario. Then they filter down the line to the generic 'all chipset' area on Intel's site.
So for those wondering where this and these types of updates come from, simple go to Intel's site and pick any of their current boards. I've used these releases before and they work, but it doesn't mean that they'll keep working - one day they may really be for intel boards only.

To DudeBoyz: I had the exact question and emailed Intel support and they write that there is no need to upgrade every time a new version comes out. They state if any version you are using works, then keep that one. I myself always install the latest and newest updates to everything.

I've had no problems whatsoever. But then again I don't even know if it does anything :P It installs pretty fast on Vista.

Regarding Vista. If you choose Vista Ultimate 32 bit, then no - there's no software for that. But by choosing Vista* og Vista 32* you'll find the download.

The Windows ME version is available on the site and it is the same version as for Windows XP. But the Vista version is too. Yet they have both different versions numbers and OS support according to their own website. Perhaps the newest version finally left the old OS'es and included Vista.

Check the site and read a bit about the software :)

adam.mt

adam.mt reviewed v9.0.0.1011 on Aug 5, 2008

Oddly this version (9.0.0.1011) isn't available from the Intel site/Download Centre yet! That's still showing the latest release as 9.0.0.1008.

Wonder if it's a leak? And for that matter, what's changed?

Update: Well it is available, but not from the chipset section rather under certain Intel Desktop motherboards. Direct link: http://downloadcenter.in...%20Systems&lang=eng

Unfortunately, no release notes are posted.

DudeBoyz reviewed v9.0.0.1011 on Aug 5, 2008

EDIT for xsnred: I am like you. I normally want to use the very latest because I figure that at the least they would contain more fixed bugs and so its best to install the latest. I try to do a Ghost Image backup before I install any new drivers though, just in case something goes bonkers. Anyway, thanks for the reply. :)

Thank You also for others that helped in answering my question. I appreciate it.

ORIGINAL POST
--------------------------------

I use these drivers with my system and they seem to do whatever they do safely.

However, I'm wanting to ask - Should users install these updates each and every time they are released no matter what Intel chipset you have?

Or is it better to stick with the version that came with the CD-ROM and the Motherboard?

With Via 4-in-1 drivers, I always installed the very latest, and I still do that with my Realtek HD Audio drivers.

But I'm just not sure if I should do the same with these Intel drivers.

I'd appreciate any helpful and informative answers other users can provide.

Thank you.

Software Sightings and/or Known Issues

Information

On Microsoft Windows 2000* operating system, if the Intel® 82801 BA/BAM AC '97 Audio Controller device is enabled, the system may fail to enter the ACPI S3 system power state. On certain systems, the issue has been attributed to some behavior experienced with the AC '97 Audio Device driver included with the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. To address this issue install an updated device driver for the Intel® 82801 BA/BAM AC '97 Audio Controller.

During the Windows* setup stage; the USB keyboard and mouse may not be accessible. This is because the legacy USB driver may be inactive when Windows enters the GUI mode. There is a small window of time when it may not be possible for the system to accept user input. Since Intel® Chipset Device Software may cause prompts during the Windows setup stage, it should be ensured that the system BIOS support for legacy USB keyboard and mouse is enabled.

Older revisions of the Intel® LANDesk Software Package may cause a Device Manager warning when installed on a system after Intel® Chipset Device Software has been executed on the system.

The language registry key, which should be located at : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Chipset\Language=[3 letter language code], does not exist after install.

When the -p command line flag option is used the license.txt file is included in addition to the readme.txt file.

The old "Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility" name can be seen briefly when the setup program is executed.

Typically the chipset software is for new installs of an OS, i.e. building a new image. The fixes resolved don't typically change any drivers, but they fix the issues with silent installs or custom installations. It's not recommended on Intel systems to update your chipset drivers after the previous versions have been installed. (however on Nvidia, Via, sis chipsets they usually do have features/upgrades that are paramount to install new chipset installs.
