Publisher's Description

JavaRa will check if your computer has the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If the version you have installed has been superseded by a newer version the program will download and install this newer version for you, by running Java's update program. It then allows you to remove all possible older versions of this program. This will ensure that the security of your computer is enhanced and extra space on your hard disk is created.

The problem with this program is that those who are security conscious are removing altogether Java because it's an ongoing liability - It's good in that you can keep up with the latest exploit fix but you are better off without java on your PC if you can live without it - Java remains on only one of my PC's for the odd time I need it.

Very confusing interface. You go to click on remove old versions and it tells you that its going to remove the newest version as well. There are three ways to check on which version you have with no recommendations as to which to use. Even online help is confusing. In the end I seem to have wound up with just the newest version but I can't help but think that I made a few wrong turns on the way to getting there. They need to simplify. Get New and Get Rid Of Old. Those should be the only buttons and they should only do what the name implies they will do.

I use this before installing new versions of the JRE, as well as on client systems because multiple versions of JRE tend to accumulate, this is a great time saver and I'm glad to finally see an update.

I agree with the previous user it doesn't remove the installer cache, that is a feature I would like as well.

Morningdove

JavaRa is not cleaning the Java Installer Cache, which also accumulates as Java is updated.

I just used this program and it removed a ton of useless Java files. Not only that, but now IE7 loads properly and the whole damned computer is running faster.

I was none too happy when Sun won the battle to exterminate Microsoft Virtual Machine. Sun leaves files scattered all over everywhere, and doesn't seem to have heard of removing the old stuff. No, the Virtual Machine wasn't open source, but it sure was a whole lot more compatible with Windows, and a whole lot smaller and smoother.

But JavaRa really did a great cleanup job for me.

I wrote Paul and he pointed out functions under the additional tools button. You can use it to disable the Java updater in the Windows startup and you can kill the process jushed.exe (also jucshed.exe. That amounts to one less startup item and one less running process.

Use his program occasionally to check for updates, and if you install one you can use JavaRA to eliminate the bulk of the old one.I plan to continue using this program to reduce my Java footprint on my computer.

Worked fine.

FYI, here's some good backup and cleanup tips:

1) Reboot. "Start->Run", type "%temp%" and delete all (xp and probably vista)

2) System Restore. Uncheck. Save settings. Then set the C-Drive only. Not only saves space but should but System Restore doesn't work well if too many programs have been added and you roll back.

3) Delete Internet Browser caches (google for how)

4) Delete Google Earth cache.

5) Keep as many files as possible on a non-Windows partition or 2nd hard drive

6) Use "Syncback" free version, keep critical files in "My Documents" or other C-Drive folder then auto backup every day, preferably to a 2nd hard drive (possibly networked)

7) Use a tool like "Acronis True Image" to make an exact copy of Operating System. The boot cd can do ANY operating system. Make a backup of a barebones install for troubleshooting, a 2nd one slightly later, a 3rd after all apps and tweaks done. *Tip: to span to dvd's you must choose the dvd drive as your backup location. If you backup to hard drive then copy images as a file to dvd's the restore will fail unless the images are copied to the SAME hard drive folder then done that way.

(unrelated gaming tip is use Start->RUN->"msconfig" to see if your game stuttering goes away. Also compare 3DMark scores. Many, many, many people have reported amazing improvements. You will need to figure out which Services/Startups to use or if a single application or driver is your problem. Again, I reboot, then enable just enough to get sound and a couple other things from a list I have on my desktop. I think it helps a lot for Vista too, especially by disabling unwanted things when you only want to game!)

*don't flame me for being slightly off topic. I've got lots of thanks and the people at this link should enjoy this (worth copying?)

Obviously you have missed the point. You suppose the programs you listed work. They do not. That´s why this exists and gets 5 points from people who care of some hundreds of MB´s of wasted HD space.

Is this a joke? Windows already includes the ability to completely remove old Java software free of charge. Sun already includes free software to automatically check for updates to the Java runtime. Why does this software even exist?

EDIT: To minasinahanmetehe, Sun's Java Update utility and uninstaller both work perfectly 100%. There are no problems whatsoever with either. The developer that designed this program must either be insanely bored or just not have a life.

Very good on XP. I use dual OS. BTW no new versions of Java are made for Win9x, so there's no need for this program to run under the "oldie". There will be no changes or updates in this OS which could eventually demand a new version and the present stable version runs perfect, so it means no problem at all.

I was looking in my add/remove folder the other day and seeing the other java's there thinking can i uninstall the old or do they need to still be install as the latest was updated, as in does the latest require them installed, if i uninstall them will it still work. Thanks to the authoer of this, 5 stars

@Zebets:

Yes Java comes with an update agent, however it does not remove the old version. Working as an independent PC Tech, most of the personal computers I came across had multiple version of Java installed. Some systems having as many as 10 different versions, all but the latest being insecure, how you can really claim that Sun is doing everything they should be. Maybe the author should make this app run the flash update utility as well.

Macromedia did the same stupid thing with Flash, wasn't till Adobe bought them out that they changed the updater to remove the old (and often insecure) versions. Too bad theirs still doesn't update automatically. Maybe the author of this app should make it run the Flash update utility too.

Only company to get it right so far is MS, Silverlight updates itself, doesn't leave old version behind. And Silverlight has only been out a few months, MS sure did it right.

allthebestnamesgone

Zebets

What in the world, this is pointless and everyone is praising it. Sun's Java ALREADY has an update program, it's in the control panel. You can even set it to update automatically. You can remove the old version from Add Remove programs.

JavaRa was created to do what the makers of JRE have curiously decided not to implement: remove older versions that take up huge amount of space (50 MB+ per version).

Though most updates simply are made for new functionalities, these older versions potentially pose a threat to your security due to the possible vulnerabilities or security holes that may exist in them.
