multi-language (perl, php, python, ruby, and tcl, plus javascript, css, html, and xml, and template languages like rhtml, template-toolkit, html-smarty and django), cross-platform (windows, mac, linux), great code editor (autocomplete, calltips, syntax checking and coloring, code folding, code browser, extensible), multi-language graphical and remote debugger, interactive shells, source code control integration (cvs, perforce, subversion), rx (regular expression) toolkit, macros, triggers, custom commands, extensibility - the best multi-language scripting ide there is (i have found).

There are a few misconceptions below I would like to correct. This is an IDE based on the Mozilla Platform for scripting languages including Python, Perl, and PHP. For PHP there are so many out there, especially free ones, that it's unlikely that you would choose this unless you're already using it for Python, Perl, or Ruby. The Javascript, XSLT support are just bonuses to round out development of web apps.

Personally, I have found that I love it for Python. It's more stable and featureful than others, especially Eclipse with the appropriate extensions (PyDev and TruStudio). It's also much nicer than WingIDE, and the basic IDLE included with any Python installation. The built in interface designer is useless for most folks (Who uses Python/Tk anymore? I use GTK+ with Glade and tepache for the most part).

The debugger is great for Python and adequate for PHP (although I only use PHP every once in a while for personal projects). I've never had problems with the CVS support. It's "just worked" for me.

I also enjoy it's multi-platform support, and love that I have the same UI on Linux and Windows.

As for bugginess, this is an _Alpha_ release. Please expect bugs. It warns you of this on install and, I believe, on first run as well. If you're looking for stability, please install the last stable release (3.5.3).

Also this is commercial software. The pre-release versions come with a full time-limited license. The releases give you a brief crippled trial to test drive it, before they require a full license. But $30 is by no means a rip-off for an IDE.

I would love to see more UI builders for different toolkits other than Tk if available and reducing its memory footprint would be a nice bonus. Hence, the 4 rather than a 5.

It is the only IDE for Python I have enjoyed using and without it I would just go back to a simple syntax highlighting editor like PSPad or using Emacs.

Hello,

this product is very buggy and it is not free. There are many IDE's around that have a better stability and a better user interface. If you searching for a good IDE try Eclipse, Netbeans (for Java development) and Maguma Open Studio for PHP (and more) development. Maguma Open Studio is capable of remote editing and it is free.
