Lavasoft ARIES Rootkit Remover will get rid of the rootkit developed by First4Internet used by Sony BMG to hide their DRM (Digital Rights Management) software.

During Autumn 2005, Sony included rootkit-style content-protection software on approximately 4.7 million CDs of over 50 artists worldwide exposing consumer PCs to security holes. The XCP rootkit, developed by First4Internet, was inadvertently placed on unsuspecting systems and networks to hide Sony BMG’s DRM protection software. According to Sony, about six million CDs currently have this software on December 2005.

They are 2 diferent engines. Adaware is not capable of removing the well hidden and protected rootkit.

The first thing you see when you run the rootkit remover is a warning telling you that by running the program you may harm your computer. That is the 2nd reason not to have it as part of Adaware. No liability.

The best solution is to not have it on your system in the first place. TURN OFF AUTOPLAY. It's not only extremely annoying and slow searching every time you put in a CD but it's very dangrous as well. Allowing an unknown program to run on it's own every time you put in a disc is a bad, bad idea. However if you did end up being infected at least there are programs like this to remove it.

Very nice of Lavasoft to deal a quick painless death to Sony's BMG.

I don't think they should add this into Ad-Aware because it's just removing one thing rather than a slew of problems. If Lavasoft released a rootkit remover that detected more than just one rootkit, then of course! But it makes no sense to bundle it.

Good tool, but I agree... this should be part of Ad-Aware as well as other rootkits.
