a very good and solid product, downloading 10 as we speak. Also anyone know a good free alternative?

MDaemon is very utilitarian and just works. We beat it silly at a previous job and it worked great. A good exchange substitute.

BoNeLeSS, considering this is a WINDOWS only mail server, why bother swinging around your list of unix-only mail servers? So tired of the linux crowd touting their goods that "if only the rest of us had their great knowledge we could use too". Geeze.

Very nice and powerful software at a fraction of the cost of Exchange, Domino or Groupwise. Of course you have open source alternatives (postifx, dovecot, cyrus, clamAV, spamassin, squirrelmai) but only the setup requires some level of experitse with these.
If you cant afford the three kings of groupware and you dont have the skills to setup a pure OSS mail system, then MDaemon may be the best bet.

Very good Exchange alternative, with less cost outlay. Ad on spam filter & AV works great too.

OPaul: No one says its beta.

^ They don't call it BETANews for nothing.

Great mail server, but this isn't beta.

This is a very good mail server. The best that I have seen. But the memory usage of the MDaemon service exceeds 40MB. When I terminated this service, my system memory usage was reduced by that much.

Excellent program, but really - this has been out for ages - and its not even a beta, why is it on "betanews"?

I used this server back in the day. Inexpensive, flexible and rock solid performance; what else can you ask for? Though, I'm not very fund of the new activation routine. Exchange alternative, perhaps. Maybe...

The previous poster seems to misunderstand the activation process. All it is doing is checking to ensure you're using a legally licensed registration key. They clearly state what information is transmitted, your IP, your MAC address, your license key, product version, and language. It transmits this one time, and asks you before it does it. At no time does the product "search" your system. At no point are any names, email addresses, domain names, etc. transmitted to Alt-N. Use a valid key, and it shouldn't worry you.

I am sorry to say MDaemon is no longer a viable solution for us. They surprised us with their newest feature (they actually called it that). Product Activation is being incorporated into the program. It seems they believe their right to protect their product includes tracking and searching our system which of course is out of the question.

There is just no equal to this program. Merick/Deerfield can't even compete. When it comes to hosting your own mail whether it is 10 or 10,000 users the only name to even consider is Alt-N. I have used this program for about 4 years now and they continue to improve it even when I think they have done all they can.

I've been running and beta-testing this application for 8 or 9 years now. Hands down -- par none. I've used several mailserver apps and this one is the best. Support from the company is excellent. User-to-user support is excellent. Updates are swift. New feature releases are frequent. Usability and administration are fantastic. It just doesn't get any better.

Correction. The current version of this MDaemon beta is v6.90a
Release notes are as follows.
ftp://smtp.altn.com/MDaemon/Beta/RelNotes_en.txt

This is by far the most comprehensive and stable mailserver for the windows platform.

This is without a doubt one of the best mail servers around.

Highly recommended.

Nice combination of features for home, soho, or small business. Not too resource intensive. Works well for small number of users.

New in MDaemon is "bandwidth throttling" -- per service or per session with a great many parameters.

It handles multiple domains well.. even with only one IP. Multiple ways to setup virtual domains.

It's spam management features could be stronger. Addition of SpamAssassin type plugin would be excellent. Currently offers DNSBL and simple expression filtering.

Merak is a decent alternative but last I checked Merak didn't allow individual users to define their own mail filtering rules.

Small problem on occasion sending mail to the main domain via AUTH smtp from the machine hosting the mail server. Sometimes mail sessions time out. This problem doesn't exist when sending AUTH smpt mail from a different machine (IP).

AltN is also currently beta testing groupware -- get some of the fun functionality of exchange (calendar sharing) without the pain and cost of MS exchange.

Not bad software BUT Merak Mail Server is a better combination with Better Webmail, Nicer Configuration, Web Configuration, ETC.
Stable but not quite as speedy as I would have liked.

Have been using since version 2 and it just gets better and better. I use it to run 4 domain names and to collect loads of email. Also have multi mailing lists and it has never missed a beat.

MDaemon is working out wonderfully! It is good to be finally hosting our own email. Previously, we were having A LOT of problems with our provider. After weeks of research & evaluation of several products, I chose MDaemon and I have never looked back!

Wasn't long ago when I started using MDaemon. In a very short time, I've become very fond of the software. It's as solid as any server software I've used. It's got a boatload of features. Check out the unlimited mailing lists. Thanks Deerfield.
