MP3 Surround is a format for storing compressed multi-channel audio material. It allows encoding multi-channel sound data in high quality at bit rates comparable to those currently used to encode stereo material. Most important, the new format is completely backward compatible to existing stereo MP3 software and devices.

This download includes the Fraunhofer IIS MP3 Surround player and Surround encoder, along with a Development Kit and WinAmp Plug-In. This evaluation software is for personal and non-commercial use and intended to demonstrate the MP3 Surround technology available at Fraunhofer IIS. MP3 Surround provides a multi-channel listening experience with a minimum of extra bitrate and maximum compatibility.

I think too many people are commenting on the quality of the songs themselves and not the quality mp3s proposes. The demo songs are crummy garage band songs, with terrible acoustics and ranges. However hearing the music fade from ear to ear is awesome in itself. I love surround audio (see the d3 plugin for winamp), and I hope it soon becomes the standard.

the idea is really good, the demo songs are also really nice, the way they do it to keep compatibility with regular mp3 decoders is well thought. frauenhofer stores the additional surround info in a 16kbit/s in sidechannels so a regular stereo downmix still works.

but for using it now it is way too early...

Mp3surround doesnt know streaming audio, and is quite slow on moving the timeline slider forward, even for normal mp3s.

    @ stycks:

using CMSS is NOT real surround sound, it adds just some hall effects, this codec has REAL 5.1 surround sound. you can't compare those 2

for instance play doom3 with cmss upmix without using 3d 5.1 audio and THEN play it again with 5.1 .... there are WORLDS between the two..

just wait until good demo songs are made, those provided didn't really blow my mind & ears...

i'm sure some trance ppl will make some space sounding trance song that uses all 5.1 chanels and then shows what this codec is capable of.

Ok, heres my thoughts on this MP3 Surround format..

I play the demo songs using it's player.. It sounded ok..

    BUT

Compared to a regular Lame encoded VBR mp3 using winamp, through my Audigy2 ZS and Creative 7.1 speaker setup with CMSS 3D using the CMSS 2 "3d upmix effect with additional room acoustics"

The MP3 Surround sounds absoultely TERRIBLE...

    Pointless..
