Cons: Also good to see that this has as much in common with any current mainline OS out there as an aardvark has with a rutabaga. I am always a big fan of originality.

Is it simplistic? Sure it is! It is not trying to be a mainstream desktop or mainframe OS. It is simply an OS that a guy wrote in his spare time as an intellectual exercise. And to that I say it is a fine effort.

Bottom Line: Indecipherable. Author must wear an aluminum foil cap.

As others have mentioned, this program used to be at the top of the heap of replacement WM players, but now it's showing it's age and other players such as The KMPlayer have totally eclipsed it in terms of functionality and stability. Why don't they increment the version number (the NORMAL way to designate a new version) instead of keeping it and changing the "build date" instead? Time to move on from MPC, I'm afraid..

Its the best at what it does. Its not something that would replace a jukebox type of application (itunes, wmp, media center, etc), but for a player thats light on the OS and full of features, its worth a try.

I stand corrected wit MPC. I said that the picture quality was better with KMPlayer but after watching There will be Blood I noticed a difference right at the begining with a shot of some clouds. MPC showed them and KMPlayer made them too bright to make out. BUT MPC is still rather buggy and BS Player oddly enough has the best image quality of them all so I've gone back to that after a few years away.

Like others said, Home Cinema edition of MPC is the way to go if your going to have MPC.

If you don't know this unlike GOM, KMPlayer and VLC does not play most files without adding codecs.

Based on my recent tests with video players I would rank them like this

1)BS Player - Best picture quality
2)KMPlayer - only one that can play nsv files
3)MPC
4)Gom Player
5)VLC - Best for streaming video

NOT incredibly stable. Crashes sporadically on several of my systems if you have it configured to not load multiple iterations of the player and play several AVI files one after the other. The codec mix is very simple:

Latest DivX
latest stable Binary of Koepi's XviD
Quicktime Alternative
Real Alternative
Intel IV5 codec
On2 VP3 codec (the original - not the latest crap)

It also borks on some MPEG2 files, again sporadically.

These are LONG STANDING BUGS for at least TWO YEARS and have not been addressed.

Other than that, it's awesome.

FOUR stars.

photonboy

photonboy reviewed v6.4.9.1 Beta 20080120 on Jan 22, 2008

Incredibly stable. I tested this new build just to be certain and it worked perfectly with tonnnes of video. I tried 50 random groupings of files containting AVI, Divx, XVid, WMV, Apple MP4, AVC, AAC, AC3, Vorbis, MKV and more including high def.

I believe the best way to use it is to install with the K-Lite codec pack and simply overwrite (search C-drive for "mplayerc.exe" it with this version. In case you don't know, the quality of the video is determined by the: original source, the encoding quality, the Decoder used and the screen viewed on. Codecs like FFDShow do a near perfect job so quality is mostly determined the source video AND the conversion job. So you can search high and low for a better video decoding solution but you will not change the quality. Even special filters can do very little. Tweaking the color or contrast/brightness is all I recommend. I don't even recommend post-processing unless you want to denoise/smooth some really bad video (at the expense of losing some detail).

MPlayer Classic works best by using the FFDShow for audio and video and Haali for splitting MKV though this is all automated during installation of the K-Lite package.

There's a lot of other programs with more options but I believe new people should use this one; in fact, keeping the number of Options low makes it simpler to find the ones you really need. I'm familiar with all the best (KMPlayer, Zoom, MPlayer (SM GUI), VLC.. ) and I seem to just stick to this now.

I can't understand how anyone can give a low score to a free program that plays basically all video (with K-Lite or other codec package), looks great and is simple to use.

*I recommend advance users also install VLC and KMPlayer.

I can't believe what echohead said. This is the best player and least problematic player ever. I put it on all of my client's PC's becuse of that. Every other player choke on something, this one doesn't - especially if you know how to set it up, but if you install it through kl-codec, you have at least 36-48 problems less. That's approx. number :). I used to install ll codecs manually, but I figured as kl-codec+MPC have every codec I use and a good bunch of codecs I don't use... it wasn't a tough decision to cut down some installing time.

Cheers!

I've tried every media player you can name and this is the very best imo. Others may do more but this has given me the fewest problems and is a standalone exe (compressable to 1.79MB not incl. ini or chm).
I have tried vlc numerous times and it has CHOKED every time. I like KM but it buries itself in the reg ended up giving me probs. Same with gom. started stuttering
btw, just tried secunia's bs psi prog & it would not even run. EOL don't mean squat

RedBoar

RedBoar reviewed v6.4.9.1 Beta 20080104 on Jan 4, 2008

Reasons I use MPC:

Small memory footprint
Uses existing codecs seamlessly
No huge install file or unnecessary plugins
Real Alternative and Quicktime Alt. perform faster than either of their own clients
And last but not least -
No need to install M$ Media Player 10 or 11!

4wd

4wd reviewed v6.4.9.1 Beta 20080104 on Jan 4, 2008

@lukasavage: Why does it matter if it's EOL?

I use quite a few programs that could called EOL as far as Secunia's limited mindset goes. As far as I'm concerned, EOL is when it ceases to be useful or a program that does it the way I want better. BTW, Secunia doesn't even detect it on my system - shows how good they're scanning is.

For me, despite it's few bugs, it is still the best player I've tried, (which included VLC, KMPlayer, GOMPlayer, mplayer, etc).

echohead

echohead reviewed v6.4.9.1 Beta 20080104 on Jan 4, 2008

this needs to die. there are so many other media players that do more than this, dont have the number of bugs that MPC has, and does it using the same amount or less memory.

Have an older lab top that doesn't play home video's too well if its larger than 320 times 240 res. Tried both WMP 10 and real player 10.0. Newer versions of these players dont install on there. So i said, wtf, and tried this player and it worked great. Even with larger video resolutions. So if you have the same problems with older pc's or lab tops. This is the way to go.

lukasavage

Its a good program to have around, its fast and lightweight and sometimes more reliable than VLC (provided you have the right codecs). Lately I have been using GOMPlayer though. But I always keep This and VLC on my essential software list.

This runs perfectly on Vista. Only problem is its not compatible to Aero (Vista will revert to non-aero on the fly when MPC is started), but next to that I haven't experienced any troubles. Have been using this since I got my Vista laptop in februari of this year.
I think the aero incompatibility is caused by the default classic rendering engine used by MPC. Maybe it is compatible to aero if you change that to VMR9. Haven't tried though.

as far as dhry's comment about the filesize.. I believe the recent versions of the player hasnt had its executable compressed.. it takes more size but loads faster.... you can compress it yourself if you want it smaller.. (I dont mean like winzip or winrar type compressed but binary compression)..

I love MPC -- Based on the SourceForge site, MPC is not the only app updated on 03/10/06:

Matroska Splitter 1.0.2.9
MP4 Splitter 1.0.0.3
MPA Decoder 1.0.0.3
MPEG Splitter 1.0.0.3
MPV Decoder 1.0.0.3

MPC has likely been recompiled with improvements in each of these splitters/decoders.

cool_guy: It does include brightness / contrast -- this is codec dependant though -- right click on the file and select Filters and the DiVX, QT, or whatever codec is being used options and set them from there.

It's good BUT....

Why doesn't this player have VIDEO/BRIGHTNESS controls? Some clips are too dark which forces me to launch WMP and use "its" brightness controls thus I lose the point of having this installeed. How about WOW-SRS? Does it have it? I couldn't find one. Are these features present but they are just hidden under some menus and I can't find them or are they missing?? Are they implemented at all? If not, are there any plugins? Four starts from me, otherwise excellent player.

Low CPU usage compared to WMP, and not infested by DRM/Spyware. Has all the options relating to what are needed in a Media Player, and none of that auto-codec/Licensing/Playlist updating junk.

nefarious1: That sounds like an other-program flaw. I know quicktime is a b**** and won't let go of those filetypes, so now I use QT Alternative.

Windows Media Player is also a b****, so I got rid of it too, and now everything is totally fine. MPC/BSPlayer/VideoLan/DivX don't seem to interfere with eachother, so it's only low quality players from MS/Apple/Real that mess things up bad.

You need documentation to configure a program? Maybe you should stick with WMP...I mean, there is documentation, but you have to click a help menu and select the second item down, and then(oh the thought!) download it, which is a grave challenge for a modern-day WMP/XP user.

The latest MPC builds have had some streaming issues, but nothing show-stopping on my end.

Google is your friend: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

Whatever Haali's is, you installed it, and it isn't on my system. If you installed it, it's your job to figure out what you put on your system. :D

Easy to configure? Nonsense. MPC does something really stupid and aggravating, for those of us who like our systems to work correctly: When it takes over file associations, it doesn't create its own master file type, and update the file type to point to it--rather, it merely updates the EXISTING master file type, no matter what it is. I know, 10,000 kids will tell me they have no problem, therefore none exists, right? Doesn't matter. This isn't the right way to do things, and it can cause problems when the application that owns the aforementioned master file type(s) is run again.

Easy to configure? Where is the documentation? What do all those "Source Filters" and "Transform Filters" do? I have no idea, all I know is that I sometimes have serious trouble if I don't have it set up in a certain way.

MPC freezes when trying to open certain M3U files and/or streams...

MPC can't seek on many files that WMP can... Plain MPEG1 files, too. Do I care if this has never happened to you? No I don't.

Easy to configure? What is "Haali's Video Renderer"? How is it configured/added/used? More mystery.

I am a huge fan of MPC, but 6.4.8.8 and 6.4.8.8v2 are not good versions. They crash with some files that play fine with 6.4.8.7.
You might want to stick to 6.4.8.7, especially if you are not going to use Haali's Video Renderer (one of the most noticeable new features in 6.4.8.8).
Otherwise, try to use cvs-2006-03-07 or newer. It doesn't crash with some MKVs any longer, plus WavPack audio in MKV now plays fine. However, cvs-2006-03-07 is not as stable as 6.4.8.7 either.

Have you guys checked the file size of this thing lately? When extracted, 6.4.8.7 is 5.27MB and 6.4.8.4 is 4.7MB! I'm going to stick to 6.4.8.2, because that's just 1.3MB and I haven't faced any problem with it yet. In fact, I'd like to get an older version that's under 1MB. I believe there was a time when MPlayerC was around 900KB. That's about as much as I can allow my media player to run into.

Edit: Okay, so the executable is not being UPX'd and distributed, but that's also for a reason - the new code is unable to run after compression (I tried it). Versions prior to 6.4.8.2 could be UPX'd without any problems. Even without UPXing, 6.4.8.2 was 3.5mb. Four point releases add 2MB? I think these guys should change their description away from being "an extremely light-weight media player".

Hi Gang,
>But why in the hell is this new version being >distributed as a 7-zip archive?

Well, you're absolutely right he should have posted a more compatible version of his program. Zip archives are way old and are being replaced by 7-Zip compression (aka LZMA). However, I have told the author on numerous occasions to write an installer. Inno Setup, an open source program for making installers, uses 7-Zip compression and would do a hell of a job.

That being said for the time being I agree he should also post that lame old format for those that can't figure out how to use www.FileXT.com. I think everyone will stop complaining about the 7-zip format once they use IZArc and realize that it's just as easy as WinZip, except it's totally free and supports more compression formats, better ones too!

They seriously need to revise this interface so not every reply is a review, therefore I will have to post a 5 since it's the average.

Cheers,
Christian

These days, most media player programs seem to be more interested in showing off, being flashy, introducing more and more butt-ugly, unusable "skins" and generally trying to do anyting but show you the media. WMP gets uglier with each release and chews up half your screen real estate with the stupid frame (and it lacks the "classic" skin these days). I don't know about you but I don't need my desktop to be some kind of showcase for some art school flunk-out's latest Photoshop excretion. QuickTime would be OK if Apple could write Windows software (at least their UI is less obtrustive if still ugly). WinAmp is great for music but it doesn't work well for video in my experience. And then there's Real. Do they try harder at being evil or incompetent? No one knows.

Media Player Classic is the rare piece of software dedicated to doing its job well and staying out of the way. It's funny how most designers of software have forgotten this.

Still wish it could be made to look less like the old wmp, because its got the best features and just looks a little old. Other than that and the playlist (which really just features in my comment about the looks) its brill.

MPC is THE best video player out there. And this version has improved it in lots of little ways.

nigelclose, what you need to download is the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

http://fileforum.betanew...Codec_Pack/1080441198/1

This has an extensive range of codecs and is bundled with media player classic so that it plays virtually any file out of the box including realplayer and quicktime files. Then you don't ever have to worry about codecs again.

Media Player Classic is exactly what I want, lightweight, simple and supports a wide range of codecs. Definately the best video player out there, although for music I still use WMP10 for ripping cds and managing my collection.

"Good and simple media player. It's faster and uses less resources than Realplayer and WMP and can play about anything with the proper codec installed"

Could you give me an example of the proper codec to install with classic?
I was having problems with WMP 10. It was not able to play my dvds because " a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on my computer"
This is why I have decided to give Classic media player a go!

Another query I had was I recently downloaded DIVX to play my dvds because Windows media player 10 was unable to play the dvd because "a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on my computer". I downloaded divx and this seemed to cure the problem because it played the dvds that WMP could not!

Although I can watch the dvds I cannot hear the sound. I know this is the case because divx is just a video codec and does not play audio.

So I downloaded RADIUM MP3 CODEC to give me sound when playing the dvds but this still does not work!

I dont know how to get divx and radium mp3 to work with each other.

Any suggestions folks? I would love a bit of he

I've tried most media players - and for someone interested in a free player without the bloated and pointless bells and whistles of the majors, but fully functional like the other freeware choices - then this is the one.

The real clincher is it's ability to play Quicktime and Real Media files (with the "Quicktime Alternative" and "Real Alternative" software installed). Never will Real or Apple have to dump their crap all over my PC again ;-)

Oh - did I mention it's tiny footprint and ease of use?

The only other player I *ever* use is VLC (formerly VideoLAN, great in it's latest version) - which as it uses it's own internal codec is able to sometimes play damaged files that NO other player would play using the standard codecs.

Jezz_X

Jezz_X reviewed v6.4.8.2 on Jun 7, 2004

This is a great player it just keeps getting better and yet still manages to be small. I really love it for watching real media and quicktime formats as well even if you do have to download a separate codec.

borisf98

borisf98 reviewed v6.4.8.2 on Jun 6, 2004

Great player, but has to be downloaded as part of Alternative Real or Alternative Quicktime package. Then get Divx, Ogg and xvid codex and you will be able to play 99.99% of all videos available through Internet. I am not sure, but I think it can play DVDs too.

One drawback. You can not change brightness/contrast option, unless you are playing avi/mpeg file. So Classic can not do that on realmedia or quicktime movies. Which is real drawback.

Dillweed said "I have to fall back to using WMP for certain videos." Well, I have to do the same (as much as I would rather not). Overall MPC is a fantastic piece of software, it's regularly updated and refreshingly free of bloat. However, I am finding that later versions are sneaking up in size and are taking longer to open than earlier versions. It's now to the point where my Windows Media Player (v6.4 with v8 codecs on Win2k) opens much faster than MPC does. There also seems to be problems with seeking in MPC that does not occur when using Windows Media Player. But it's still a great player overall.

Thus I could use the hundreds of free audio plugins (like a multiband compressor, noise reduction etc) available in VST format to beef up and fix the sound of unprofessional recordings. This could also be used to maintain a steady output volume. You can find tons of information on how to implement VST on the web.

DVD). Yeah, it doesn't have fancy graphics but if You need lightweight and flexible player with extensive configuration then this is it.
BTW:
- Palomino, You can always controll brightness with your display drivers for every player (overlay controlls).
- bobad: codeck packages are compatibile with almost every windows player, so You can use any of them. And the only difference is that WMP9 can download M$(only) codecs when needed.

wtf? i installed it and tried to play some .rm, .ra and .mov files but it couldn't play, then i went and downloaded some ac3 codec recommended by the program itself and get to play the .ra file but not the .rm, also i went to the soundoforge forum and read there that i could install the codecs by the real alternative player which i already have but after installing it i couldn't play ANY real file!!, i guess that if you want to play quicktime or real files you should install both real and quicktime alternative because this player doesn't work without those codecs, i'm still wainting to see if this player will show some divx movie with subtitles, if not, i'll stay with radlight. to the developer: why don't you deliver this proggie with a decent installer with codecs (for mov and real files)?, i hate to install something and then begin to figure out how to make it work. bye.

One day my OGM's will play, next day they won't. One day my MPEG4 will play, next time they won't. Can someone point me to a good single package of CODECS?

I had problems using MPC to play back .mpg videos in Windows 2000: upon loading the clip, my system would become almost totally unresponsive. The sound played OK, but the video window in the player showed 4 equally sized squares of different colours. Rescently, however, I switched to Windows XP and everything seems to work fine. I would give this player a 5/5, except that there's no facility to crossfade or normalize audio. If the developers were to implement this, or add support for Win Amp plugins so people could get such functionality from there, that would make this player perfect.

So maybe there is a bit of a glitch in there. About the full screen comment. It did not play on mine correctly, but it was due to the DivxG400 Codec was installed. After uninstalling it. The video played normally in full screen mode. Over all an excellent program. If it would crash less on my computer.....

I didn't give this program a second look when it came with the Quicktime Alternative package. But, recently, I've been having a lot of problems watching large AVI files off of a CD with Windows Media Player 9. My computer would either lock up, or WMP would crash and my two CD drives would disappear from My Computer. So, I thought I'd give Media Player Classic a try. And, not only have I not experienced any crashing, but my movies don't even stall, as they occasionally would with WMP for a few seconds. Excellent!

johnny143

johnny143 reviewed v6.4.5.6 on Jun 20, 2003

An excellent programme. Much better than the other alternative that I have just previewed (BSplayer). It is fast, extremely stable, and very user friendly. If only Microsoft could write a media player half as good as this one! Okay, Mediaplayer 9 etc. does have SRS WOW, but this seems redundant on newer sound systems. Only Trusurround XT will give mediaplayer 9 some grace. Also media player 9 has the adjustable speed, without changing the tone. Pretty cool effect that takes next to no CPU (about 5% usage in total still), even though to accomplish speeding up/slowing down sound without pitch change requires quite a bit of processing power. It only supports a few sound formats though, and only a few video formats.

Anyway, this is the best media player I have used in a long time, and I recommend it to anyone over any other player that is available. Five cheers to the writer, and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say well done on this innovative programme. The interface albeit simple could be slightly better, more of an XP Windows feel without changing the file size, speed or amount of memory use. It would be good to go away from a Windows media player 6 look to a look of its own whilst retaining the high quality of the programme and ease of use.

This is definitely a keeper. This should have been the route M$ had to take, but they chose to make a bloatware product called WMP7 and later used this as a basis to build the grotesque WMP9.

Media player classic gives you a lot of control over your files and it's highly configurable. I use it as a backup for an even better player (bsplayer). People who think this has nothing to offer over WMP6.4, clearly haven't tried it (are you reading this, fiddelm3742?)

Gee, this thing has subtitle support, audio stream switching, selectable video/audio outputs, DVD playback, RealMedia, QuickTime and Flash playback, speaker output remapping, DShow video filters (custom connecting of that!), DShow audio filters, widely used DirectX audio effects (and that allows connecting Winamp dsp plugins!), WinLIRC/uICE remote control support, remapable keys, pan&scan, realtime resize, and you say that 10mb is too much? Dude, take a look at WMP7 or smth.

Pros: Very straightforward in implementation without any messy and incomptability/rendering issues with plugins and skins.

Cons:

1. Memory usage is too high for such a minimalist program - approx. 10 Meg. Even WinAmp 2.81 with Dfx and a host of other input/output/visual plugins tops around 6 Meg. This should be looked at.

2. When choosing "File" from the menu bar, there is a lengthy pause before the menu drops down.

Other than the above, I feel this player is moving in the right direction. More functionality, less eye-candy.

hmm, half of the comments that were here have been deleted. strange. about the newest version: it supports video and audio directx plugins, which is cool, but sorting them is a pain in the ass, they should be automatically sorted by alphabet or by the frequency of usage. QT playback works, but not very well, one can't change the picture size (streching) and also I get an error before playback starts, but then it still works. anyway, I still prefer quicktime player, it's better optimised for mov files

wyoung

wyoung reviewed v6.4.3.0 on Mar 2, 2003

To the person before: Do you actually have the QT browser plugin, and decoding libraries installed? MPC requires all that installed, otherwise there will be nothing to use. It relies upon having the browser plugin (and hence all the other stuff behind it) for QT to be played. Anyhow, that said, QT playback works for me. The play/stop/pause buttons work rather weirdly when doing QT, but still works. Platform here is Windows 2000 SP3, with QuickTime 6 installed.
