-Easily made portable. Without getting a portable version.
I use it in HTML mode. (Whatever suits you)..!!
Gives the basics of your Vid: Codec, Format, AR, Brate, audio, etc.
For the full data of a vid, Hit the Debug tab & click Advanced.
Used it forever. I've never had an Issue with this App Altho I've
never Installed it. This app is more for the techy Encode/ReCoders.
If you just use a Vid converter, then this app isn't really for you.
Gets top whack from me. 5*
Thumbs up to the other FIVERS...

For those worried/bothered with the OpenCandy feature,
either:
In HOSTS file, set 127.0.0.1 opencandy.com
either:
from the developper's page, download the zipped no-install file.

The application itself is healthy and efficient.

Infected with "Open Candy" malware!

boony

boony reviewed v0.7.44 on May 31, 2011

Some of the Chicken Little's here really need to do a little research. OpenCandy is not classified as malware (malicious software). It is considered adware.

From ESET: "A potentially unwanted application is a program that contains adware, installs toolbars or has other unclear objectives. There are some situations where a user may feel that the benefits of a potentially unwanted application outweigh the risks. For this reason, ESET assigns them a lower-risk category than other types of malicious software, such as trojan horses or worms."

All you have to do to avoid it is download the zip version. That they use OpenCandy may be annoying, but they clearly state that they use it on the program's home page. Following the "We use OpenCandy" link, leads to an F.A.Q. that includes an explanation of what it is, as well as a link to the zip version should you not want to install OpenCandy.

Not so hard, is it? Although I guess it's much more fun to throw reason to the wind and respond with "OMG!! Malware, n00bs! ROFL!".

MediaInfo itself is an excellent source of info for just about any type of media file you have on your system. The GUI is OK, could be streamlined a bit.

Prospero424

Prospero424 reviewed v0.7.44 on Apr 19, 2011

No, the standalone executable versions do not contain OpenCandy. But guess what? You know what you get when you click on that big "Download Now" button on the right? You get the installer that DOES contain OpenCandy.

My only real objection is that it runs with no notice and no opt-out. Not cool.

But really, whether or not this software packaging bothers you is something you can decide for yourself with a quick Google search investigating what this software is and what it does.

Luckily, when others fill their "reviews" with cursing and name calling in a juvenile response to legitimate concerns, it does far more to discredit them than it does those they're railing against.

I only use it portably from my send to menu. Anybody AFRAID(aghhh!!!) of open candy is a retard.
BOTH the gui and lite zipped version DO NOT contain the open candy folder which any 5 yr old could easily erase-stupid ****s.
All the freely available software on the net will NEVER cater to any one individual for any reason-get used to it, write your own, or stop using it and stop posting your pathetic whinings.

Prospero424

Prospero424 reviewed v0.7.42 on Mar 7, 2011

Yeah, if they want to add an option during installation for a sponsored toolbar or something, that'd be fine. But this OpenCandy stuff is very, very bad and installs automatically without non-fine-print notice to the user.

Stay away until the authors clean up their act. Instead use MediaInfo Lite: http://fileforum.betanew...aInfo-Lite/1183386892/1

Instead of making the detections and crap interface any better, the author spends more time properly injecting spyware in your system.

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v0.7.20 on Aug 19, 2009

Export does point to the file location. The program's location is but an example if you wanted to quicksave it (program is totally portable).
Windows shell integration is what is borked as too many options tend to overrun each other and give you a cluttered interface. Send to option is simple & effective imho.

TomWibbaert

TomWibbaert reviewed v0.7.19 on Jul 17, 2009

Still lacks too many things, the interface is clumsy at best, the shell integration is borked, and configuration is non-existent, it could be much better if the export function could actually be pointed to the directory of the media currently displayed, instead of the programs home directory.

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v0.7.19 on Jul 17, 2009

Actually, it tries to access the internet on installation regardless of whether or not updating was previously disabled. I assume they are hot for donations or something as there is an option for that in the cfg. Me & my fw are ok with that. Hey, at least it doesn't behave like the official divx installer. That one needs a leash.

Second Shadow

Yup, sorry, my bad. The "phone home" feature is for checking for updates and CAN be disabled. Thanks to jorgosch (a.k.a. smartypants :) ) below for pointing that out for me.
I should have rated it 3 stars instead of 2, so now I'm giving it 4 stars to average :)

jorgosch

jorgosch reviewed v0.7.15 on May 1, 2009

Very useful program, I use it all the time ,for example to check the encoding profile on Matroska Files.
To the reviewer below: This software is free, why not read a few ads during install so the programmer gets SOME kind of benefit. The most important thing is that there's no adware or spyware whatsoever in the program itself. And if you disable "Check for new versions" it won't even connect to the internet, smartypants...

Second Shadow

Second Shadow reviewed v0.7.15 on May 1, 2009

Nope, sorry, I like the program but this is too much:
- Includes ads, albeit only during install/unistall (as the developer himself wrote a few reviews below) -> adware
- Tries to phone home every time it runs (what for?) And this can't be prevented from inside the program

This used to be a great program with an awful interface. The awful interface is still there, but the program isn't so great anymore

For lorg:
I am the developper of MediaInfo.

I use software from http://www.opencandy.com/ to include some ads in the installer, and only in the uninstaller. Your system is not modified if you don't want.
All is 100% safe, this does NOT install anything if you don't agree. No toolbar or ads are installed on your OS.
(OpenCandy has an opt-in system: if you don't click on "Yes, I want" yourself, nothing is done)

MediaInfo is a neat tool, but sourceforge is really a pain in the neck as a download server.

It support more formats than Gspot but Gspot beat this app regarding to Xvid/divx encoding details. I prefer to use Gspot for xvid/divx and KMplayer that come with some sort of mediainfo embedded for the rest of formats.
