The people who hack windows are so far ahead of microsoft that it makes them look like a joke. MS should consider making a new OS based on unix/linux to get their security problems under control once and for all. Have tried this I don't know how many times. Same result: VERY heavy on the PC with its background service running. Besides, realtime A/V software is really only for the internet clueless. I've learned to live without traditional system realtime A/V(spyware and malware) software protection and am doing just fine thank you, and the PC rewards me in return with the utmost speed.

BTW, this software keeps dragging down your system even when you turn off its realtime protection because of its constantly running background service.

This download description is not properly labelled. This is only a definition update for MSE, not a new version of MSE itself (latest is currently 4.1, so 1.x would be quite a step backwards...). Rating is for the scanner itself still, which is a very decent product. There may be better ones out there, but it does the job for those who are happy with an easy-to-use AV that does not require much attention.

Microsoft obviously bought a product that was doing virus protection right, then branded it. The problem is that this app is very system heavy and memory intensive.

I recommend clamwin + clam sentinel. Light, free, real time open source virus protection.

Avoid version 4.0 if you can. The options to configure to scan all downloads, monitor only incoming or outgoing files, enable or disable behavior monitoring or network inspection system have been deleted in 4.0. Use Avast for a more configurable and most lightweight antivirus.

User beware. I tried to install the 64 bit version of this on my Win 7 machine. It locked up during the "Install Updates" phase and crashed my system. I had to do system restore to get my computer back. I'll stick with Avast! and SupeAntiSpyware

A must have, one of the best security suites available today: it is lighter than AVG or Avira, and offers excellent protection.
I always use a second line of defense with specialized non-live scanning tools, like Malwarebytes and SpyBot, but now I'm very happy with MSE as first line of defense.

I've installed this on different computers and sometimes it runs well and barely notice it and other times it seems to slow down everything. The main reason I don't like it is that it seems to only have 2 choices: delete and quarantine. I would like more than that ... at least "ignore". Too few choices for a person like me that still likes to be in control of his computer. Otherwise, the engine, database, footprint, and updates seem more than adequate especially for a free program. I would use it if it had the "ignore" choice.

Light on resources?

I decided to try the new version and well, same as the old v1 version for me on my P4 2.66Ghz 768Mb RAM.

Issues:

* Open a folder with more than 1 .exe in it and it brings the machine to a standstill for 30 seconds.

* Rename an .exe (sometimes other files as well) and it brings the machine to a standstill for 30 seconds.

* Delete an .exe (sometimes other files as well) and it brings the machine to a standstill for 30 seconds.

All those 30 seconds add up in the course of the day

* Generally slows down just about every process on the PC, for instance i have to disable real time just to use dvbviewer to watch tv....otherwise it periodically locks up the video stream every minute or so. Setting MSE to ignore dvbviewer did absolutely nothing to alleviate the problem.

* The real clincher for me to uninstall it and go back to Avast 5 (been using Avast for years), which has NEVER exhibited any of these issues, was when i told it to exempt another program which it incorrectly falsely identified as a risk and it still quarantined it. When i then restored the file and turned off real time, i was shocked to see MSE STILL fricking quarantine the program.

Sorry Microsoft, I DECIDE on what runs on my PC, not you....

Compared to Avira and just about all other AV programs out there, this *IS* the lightest resource AV available.

I was seriously skeptical of MSE when it was release thinking it would be a re-badge of their previous bloated AV software, but boy was I left with my jaw on the floor! It was light on resources, it didn't bring games to a halt, it didn't make my downloads slow, it didn't make browsing the file explorer a stuttering pain and it seemingly is doing it's job well.

I have been critical of resource usage in AV programs since they became prolific in the PC market. They have always been resource hogs and usually bring a system to it's knees just as bad and as much as the software they're suppose to protect you from. I have even referred to Norton's AV as a Virus or Trojan itself because it digs it's claws so deep into your system that you can't get rid of it unless you wipe your system and start from scratch, that and the fact that it takes over your PC and makes your PC experience a nightmare.

The other issue I've had with AV programs are the constant false-positives they produce. It's constant and annoying, it's as if they do it on purpose to justify their use to you so that you continue to pay them for their updates. MSE has not once given me a false-positive. I intentionally downloaded some virus infected software and some trojan infected software and MSE jumped right on them, but have yet to see one false positive from MSE, and I've been using it since it's initial release.

Please don't mistake me for a MS fanboy, because I'm not! I've been a MS hater since XP and more so when Vista hit the market. But Windows 7 gave MS some new street creds and MSE just gives it that extra push. MSE is the one thing MS has done right thus far.

As a note, do not use the update feature in the help menu of MSE, just download the latest from the MS site. When you run the install it will(should) detect your current installation and simply update it. Though I noticed one reviewer mentioning it didn't update his XP install :-(

Great AV Program. Really light on the system. Strange though, when I follow the download link (to Microsoft) and download the XP version, it is v 1.0.1963.0, which is the same version I am running now. Guess I'll just wait for it to auto-update. Is there a changelog anywhere?

Because they would be in court again over monopolistic practices. The other antivirus companies would have a fit if Microsoft tried something like that, and honestly who would want them to? I prefer having a choice in which programs I use.

Now this is a good program, probably one of the best free antivirus programs available right now. However it absolutely shouldn't be bundled into Windows. They pulled that crap with Windows Defender already. Bundling programs is bad.

Before making any decision on an Av, I would suggest looking at the results of Av-Comparative tests. I would look at 3 test; Main, Performance, and Removal. The *Removal test is important because none of the AV did a very good job with G-data at only app.63%. When looking at the Removal part, keep in mind that AV 's test is from 2009 and only tested a small sample of malware. So, I hope Av-Comparatives gets more aggressive in this area.

On the *Removal* test, no Av scored *very good* and only 3 scored *good* at both removal of malware plus removal of left over junk.

Ironically, Essentials gets 3 stars on Main, 3 stars on performance and is only 1 of3 to get both a good on removal and removal of left over junk.

Setting aside Bias which we all have including myself, Essentials is worth a look.

Uses very minimal resources. I've been using this on my netbook and it dosent use much cpu and disk read/writes when scanning real time seem minimal.

MSSE has caught 2 trojans while browsing in the last month. Its free and it works.

Being a bit of a MS skeptic myself, I was obviously leery of trying this out. Last bit of security software from MS was bloated and nearly brought my system to it's knees in performance.

This however is not the case thus far with MSSE. It runs very transparently only bugging you when something important needs attention. This did not bring my PC to it's knees with performance degradation. In fact I forget this is even running and no longer have to have to kill an AV program just to play games on my computer(previous MS av/security suite would even affect older games like Age of Empires II, this one does not).

So all in all this program at least performance wise is by far more efficient than it's predecessor.

The question that begs to be asked though is how effective is the program at doing it's job? To which I cannot answer since I personally do not go out of my way looking for sites or software that can potentially infect my system.

It seems to work very well, at least in terms of resource usage (very low).

We all are so used to nailing MS for software that falls short of expectations (Me included) it's hard to give em a thumbs up. This app seems well written, no install issues. Of course long term use will provode the final opnion in it's ability to locate bugs,malware ect. But so far so good...I'm going to put it throgh it's paces and I remain optimistic. 4 stars so far..I hope 5 soon.

After using MSSE for a few months I am more than happy with it's performance and abilities. It does not use a lot of resources as noted by someone below, in fact, it uses less resources than say Explorer itself, the printer spool, the search index, the sidebar..

One thing I look for, besides the actual security abilities such a program offers, is how it reacts with a user's normal usage of their computer. Most of the time, live scanning, or real-time scanning usually causes stuttering or lagging while a user does normal operation. This is the biggest annoyance ever to me and every anti-virus program I have used suffers from this. I am amazed at how MSSE does not suffer from this.

And of course we come to the meat... Does it catch all them little buggers? Yes it does! Well, I can't say it will catch everything of course. I have a test drive that I pop in that has a few nasties on it and as soon as I popped it in and went to browse it, MSSE did it's job quickly.

It plays nice with your system, it's simple to use and it does the job it's intended to do... Best of all, it's free!

I love the simplicity of the program which is really important if you are installing this for the less than tech savvy. Also, it is suppose to have a great detection rate. The only reason I went back to Avira for now is that this did use a very large amount of resources (up to over 100mb). It might be because I'm on a 64bit system. Looking at the support forum it looks like that is an issue. Once they get that figured out it will be extremely likely that I'll switch.

Excellent antivirus program. The sending info thing is the only negative I see. But not a huge deal. It detected and blocked that fake "antivirus 2009" trojan that tries to install from popups... something that Avast antivirus never once detected.

And unlike other posts here, it is NOT bloated. Its actually very light on resources. I'm sure the competition is worried, so they have their goons posting fake reviews. Either that or its diehard fans of other software who don't want some free program showing their expensive program up.

Resourse hog, unreliable (nothing new coming from M$) and spyware coming from Microsoft... Even if you do not "do anything wrong" I seriously recommend to stay away from it. It will send your data to MS in background, no way! Privacy is first.
Spyware used to come from obscure small companies wanting fast profit, but a company like Microsoft releasing such crap, that is terrible

This is very good software and it works well.

I too do not like the idea of not being able to disable spynet and it sends info to Microsoft. But in all reality, what truly is the harm, Microsoft is not the first to do this and in fact many do it. I guess, if your not doing anything illegal, you really have not much to worry about. BUT they should give us that choice, not make it for us. That is the only thing I do not like about this software, not being able to turn off spynet. But software makers are notorious for doing this.

Security Essentials seems to provide a fairly high hefty amount of security if its configured properly and correctly after first run. It gets a 4 star rating until I forsee otherwise.

P.S. This program requires a WGA Validation Check upon install and cannot be bypassed.

Pretty good so far, but I'd like to see an objective review of its detection and false positive rates sometime soon.

Only thing I'd refute form other reviews is the claim that it's "light" on resource use. Maybe the 32-bit version is different (tho I doubt it), but the 64-bit version of the MsMpEng.exe service employed by the software uses a constant 130MB of PHYSICAL memory! That's a heck of a lot more than AVG or Avira used on this system; almost double. The front end for the software only uses about 4MB, but the background service is pretty big.

Now, that's not to say that Security Essentials is somehow slowing down my system. I have 4GB of RAM and so far I haven't noticed major slowdowns, but the same could be said for Avira or AVG. I was just surprised by the sheer amount of physical RAM it was using after having read the glowing (p)reviews.

But it's free and, unlike AVG and Avira, there are no nag screens. And MS is taking a bit more responsibility for the security of its own software. These are good things.

Nice and simple looking scanned really fast (may not be good thing if it missed scanning some things) Didn't find anything wrong but then neather did Nod32 since its a relatively new PC install.
Issues I have is its way behind in UI compared to other mircosoft products in this day of Vista and Win7 the tabs and icons make it look like it was made for windows 3.1. So hopefully when it gets more finished it may fit the part looks wise for a modern UI. (yes I know ui in a antivirus shouldn't matter as long as it works) :P
But hell t seems to work and its free so hard to complain really :)

Nice and clean GUI, easy to use, it is light in memory usage even if it needs apparently 1 GB RAM at least (works with 512 MB indeed)
MSE uses Microsoft Forefont engine and has an excellent antirootkit module.

I like this program and it seems to work well with little notice. I have had it installed for a bit with no problem so far. Any software of this nature is going to have problems from time to time, no matter what anyone says. For those of you who find fault with anything Microsoft, then use another software, thats all. Some people cannot be pleased no matter what Microsoft does, so I ignore them. So far this is working just fine with no problems.... I will give it a 4 star rating, just in case... I do keep a open mind on things, I do not condemn things just because it is fun to do so.

So now I can't beta test this beta of theirs and am just a bit upset of the hoops I had to go through only to find out that you can't download it now.

@ coover - probably because MS can no longer guarantee security on Windows 2000 (nor should they, IMHO). It's well past it's use-by date, and hasn't been in mainstream support since 2005.

As for Morro... so far so good. Installed in a VM of Windows 7 RC, and runs fairly well. Seems fairly resource light, no doubt because it's basically an upgraded version of Defender. It'll be interesting to see some AV Comparative reports on it's effectiveness.

Seems to install and run well with very few resources. However, the little icon in the system tray is a little disconcerting... Is that a circus tent?

Doesn't seem terribly appropriate for a security program.

4% CPU usage during full scan. Nice and light weight, does a good job at catching sample virii that I had available.

seems like fantastic software so far. very fast and doesn't kill computer speed while it's scanning. nice simple interface.

I am curious why, if this will run on an XP machine, it will not run on a Win 2000 machine. I have an old, really old laptop that that runs fine on Win 2000, but chokes (is extremely slow) on XP .. I see no reason to take it out of service when it will do the things I need it to do as it is. MS needs to reconsider their lack of support for excellent, though old, Operating Systems.

It would be really nice to be given some notice on downloads, that Betanews was not the host, and we were merely being redirected to Microsoft (or whomever).
