Ah, this should've been what Vista was supposed to be except with lower hardware requirements without the obvious performance hit. The look has been upgraded of course and I think some of the artists of those wallpapers must be smoking something. Talk about psychedelic. I'm not a fan of the taskbar but perhaps I need to give it more time. One thing of note is that it did not automatically download all the needed drivers. Don't know who to blame on that one: Microsoft or the manufacturers. So prepare to have your stuff not work. That said, what did they do to the media player? IT SUCKS. Looks like its main purpose is to hawk Microsoft products. Go back to version 10 and try again, please. UAC is still annoying as ever. Turn the slider all the way down to save your sanity. And speaking of software, no, your old XP software won't work -- not even in compatibility mode.

@ UniversityofKentucky - That isn't actually Windows fault (For once). Windwos can't install to ext(n) partitions so what you needed to do was either create a second partition with NTFS or FAT32 or reformat your whole HDD. In any case, if this release is a flop I'm going full linux, if not I'm going to keep XP or switch to Win 7 (Dual-boot still).

UniversityofKentucky

UniversityofKentucky reviewed vRelease Candidate 1 (RC) on May 8, 2009

On my test machine I loaded Ubuntu, which installed flawlessly. I REALLY wanted Win 7 to work. I installed from image and it looked promising - up until the point where it couldn't find a partition to install on. My question is why can Ubuntu find the partition, but not Win 7? I'd still like to test Win 7, but don't have a lot of time to invest in troubleshooting. It's sweet when "it just works."

One person said it looks "Fisher Price"?? I don't get how that is, since that was always the look of XP to most people. To be sure Win7 is small increase over Vista visually but you have to go beyond that to understand it.
I've used the beta off and on for the past few months and I find its quite fast. This coming from a steady Vista user. As much as I liked XP, I like Vista a lot (though I did have to turn of UAC which works much nicer in Win7).
Win7 is what Vista should have been. Those who want to keep with XP sound to me like they are too much in the comfort zone and don't see what Win7 can do or haven't really put it through its paces.
Like anything there are things to dislike, but overall its a nice smooth fast operating system.

My 1 yr old laptop is now dual boot Vista Ultimate and Win7. I think next week I'll toss Vista for good. Never warmed to Vista. Microsoft did a good job listening and revising - the sense of walking through the mud at every step seems gone. Win 7 is a pleasure to run in comparison. Looking forward to the final version this fall.

Should'nt this be called Vista Service Pack 2 or something ? When i first tried it i had to look at least 8 times at it and its start menu to see any difference , apart from its FisherPrice clunky taskbar it looked nigh on the same. Even delving deeper it didnt hold many surprises. It already looks tired as well ! I tested this since the beginning of the year and i am not impressed. Vista stank( and yes i bought ultimate and used it for 6 months) and this doesnt smell particularly inviting either. So iI will keep XP thank you very much. I wont be ripped off again.

Yay! for trolls.

"Looks like KDE" *laughing*

Yeah, you need glasses, sparky.

"runs as slow as vista"

Hmm.... Sounds like your problem. Everyone who's actually *run* it is saying it performs *far* better.

Aegis69

Aegis69 reviewed vRelease Candidate 1 (RC) on May 5, 2009

Looks like KDE, runs as slow as vista.

What I care about is my apps, do my apps run on XP or Linux? Yes. Do they run on Win7? Some dont', most run slower. Making sure apps run is the most important thing, and MS has made that a low priority. Idiots.

Do I feel like paying Microsoft tax every 3 years? No.

Are there any features in Win7 that I cannot get from the open source or freeware communities? No.

End of caring about Win7

Vista SE.

The same bloat, slightly faster, even more cluttered GUI with a lot of XP functionality abandoned.

I will stay with XP (only for games - my primary OS is Linux) till 2014.

It gets 3 only because it's rock stable and has the most software in the world. It's nowhere near 5 (which means perfect in terms of Betanews).

5 stars for me... installed and run perfectly on a single core amd X4000, nVidia 7900GS, 2 gigs of pc3200. Gives an overall score of 4.3 (the lowest of the lot, because of the processor), and it runs aero, all bells and whistles.

Found drivers for all my hardware, the nVidia ethernet, 3Com ethernet, Lexmark laser printer.

Installed fresh in about 15 minutes.

Beta keys work with Ultimate version. Good until March 2010

Finally, MS got it right, or is on the right track.

Looks cool, feels good, taskbar still not efficient. On top of everything, failed to recognise Creative X-Fi fidelity PCIe Sound card and Creative's beta driver or any XP/vista compatible drivers are not helping at all. Overall performance is so far so good. Not happy having no sound in Win7

DACWILSOL

DACWILSOL reviewed vBeta on Mar 16, 2009

Fast! Suprisingly reliable. Detected all drivers. Only complaint is destop ini. Fixed with some help around the net. Speed is truly refreshing. IE works flawless and is faster. HP Intel ViiV 2 gig ram sys, 500 gig hd.

anomoly reviewed vBeta on Jan 24, 2009

Installed yesterday and OS found every device driver for my pc except one. I did have to fight to get my proprietary (s***ty but working) video drivers to install as the MS version kept randomly crashing (& then recovering) and kept wanting to immediately reinstall itself while I was attempting my own install!.
Installed comodo firewall as agnitum is not compatible and I use clamwin for my av soft.
Recommend to backup your files personally (in xp) and do a clean install. If you are running vista sp1 you can upgrade to this.
Looks great with Total Commander UP and sharpe enviro shell replacement.
Explorer still sucks as well as IE. I use k-meleon.
Backup does work but takes 3x as long as acronis and files are also twice the size with apparently no incrementals. May switch to acronis if this becomes an issue.

zeeZee

zeeZee reviewed vBeta on Jan 21, 2009

Excellent, Fun, Recomended. Put this on my main system, ran flawless and still is. Runs Team Fortress 2 as good or better than windows xp. Neat little new features. Goodbye acronis true image, Windows 7 has it built in.

This beta is already many times faster than Vista on the same VPC setup. I am very impressed, so far. I believe that MS may get this one right. Yes, I know that it has been a trial and error stage with Vista, but that really isn't what I am talking about here with 7. For 7 being beta, it is very stable and I like it all, but the task bar is just stupid.

Has anyone noticed that when you boot to the Win 7 DVD and you get to the INSTALL NOW screen, if you click WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE INSTALLING WINDOWS the help/support info is listed as INSTALLING WINDOWS VISTA. Guess they did not take the time to re-brand the help file, oh well ... they can clean it up in SP2.

This works well on my laptop w/o any errors or hardware problems. I have 2 desktops (one older than the laptop, one newer) and they both are missing device drivers when Win 7 is installed. From my limited time playing with Win 7 it seems to be "Vista , but without the sidebar". No doubt there are many sublte attributes I am overlooking ... or maybe it's just all those device drivers that are missing. Here's to hoping Microsoft gets it better this time around (you know,a good working OS that doesn't need SP1 on the first day).

I installed this on my EEE PC 1000H netbook last night and it works really good. It didn't pick up the LAN or wireless drivers but I got those going with Vista drivers. Only thing I found so far is playing avi files using smplayer crashed it a lot until I changed the video rendering to Direct-X. Other than that I tested the new defrag program which does multiple passes and has a scheduler. Every other program I installed so far seems to work OK. I'd give it a 4/5 the way it is in Beta stage only because the video part needs some work.

The x64 version installed and runs fine on my ThinkPad X60 notebook (1.66 GHz T5500) with 2 GB memory (the maximum the motherboard allows). All the drivers necessary were installed right from the OS, and a few updates came via Windows Update. I played some HD videos (1080i) with Windows Media Player through an 802.11g network with no problem. The memory usage at the moment is 668 MB, though that will increase as Superfetch adds more programs. But this is just a test for getting a solid-state disk drive later, and I will turn off Superfetch anyway. I just defragmented the disk drive, and it seems faster than Vista.

Overall, It looks good to me. I might even try the 32-bit version on my old P4. It is free to test; just need a spare disk drive, of which I have plenty.

As an IT professional I've had the luxury of using every version of Windows, and with that needing an open mind in doing so.

I personally liked Windows Vista's interface and enhancements, and once again as an IT professional understood that most people's problems with Vista were because they didn't have the proper understanding required to purchase a machine from a salesman. They needed someone they could trust helping them pick out a machine that would properly handle the OS.

Now with that said, Windows 7 Beta runs tremendously well on my machine. I have not done any benchmarks, but real feel comparisons lead me to believe that Windows 7 runs just as well on my machine as XP does. Not only is Windows 7 snappy in a VM limited to 512MB, but it runs very well on my machine as the standalone OS as well.

The new taskbar looks amazing, and I love how they have made the Aero interface more efficient. Microsoft really hit this one out of the park. My only concern is that they don't start over promising again, because up until this point they are over delivering on this product and that is what will sell it.

azimov reviewed vBeta on Jan 11, 2009

Having not been able to download it on Friday, managed on Saturday.
The interface is nice, the UAC is easily customisable, so that you can get rid of quite a few annoying alerts.
The task bar has been cleaned up which is good. much less clutter.
There are a few ideas that have been copied over from Linux which is the jump bar.

Looking forward to the real thing.

It's a beta.

I don't understand how people can form an opinion of it in just 2 days??

You are not beta testers your just complainers.

Stop trying to make this XP. XP's time in the spotlight has come and gone.

So far the only problem I have had is that the screen resolution was set really low after my computer came out of sleep. Not the end of the world. I seen this happen on vista, XP, ME and 2000 and 98. Could be windows 7 could be the nvidia driver pre release i installed that doing it.

Still very early to form a solid opinion.

Only problem is a lot of my programs wont run on Windows7.So I'll now wait for the finished product before I try it again

molumen reviewed vBeta on Jan 10, 2009

Very smooth install process, all the drivers were installed by the system without problems. The user interface really looks like Vista but some aspects feel like they are more polished. I did not feel some improvement in speed and boot time in comparison to Vista so at this point I do not feel the need to switch to Windows 7 (Vista is rock solid and reliable so I am very happy with it).
Since Windows 7 is still a beta I hope some real improvements in speed and functionality will appear in the final release (now Windows 7 looks like a slightly updated version of Vista), but for now it looks like I will skip Windows 7 and stick with Vista and probably jump to the system that will come after Windows 7.

There is no way to upgrade from XP. You need Vista SP1 "or higher." Are they punishing people who did not buy Vista?

jspratjr

jspratjr reviewed vBeta on Jan 10, 2009

After playing with it for about 2 hours (64-bit version):

- "Seems" to have about the same response time as Vista, maybe a little faster but not overally noticeable to me.
- UAC needs an exclusion list (does anyone know if it's a setting somewhere - I couldn't find it?).
- Do miss the Quick Launch bar - the default icons on the task bar are too big but can be reduced in size.

- Broken/Impaired: ESET Smart Security and Dec 08 driver for Radeo HD 3450. Had to uninstall and reinstall ESET and it worked fine. All other programs/devices I use ran without a problem.

Personally, I agree with some others - it feels like a Vista SP. I really like Vista (as do most of the people I know that have actually tried it for more than 5 minutes) but, not withstanding the "under the hood" changes which I need to read up on, I'm not willing to lay down cash to move off of Vista at this point - XP is a different story (still run XP on my wife's Dell mini and I'd take Vista/7 over it in a heartbeat).

p.s. Agree, not liking the new Betanews interface...didn't see anything wrong with the old one.

astovidiu

astovidiu reviewed vBeta on Jan 10, 2009

I was reluctant at first but finally I have decided to backup everything and give it a try. Also I expected to reinstall XP after 5 minutes Windows 7 surprised me by having installed drivers for every device (even for the notebook's web cam) except the card reader and the video card. The Vista drivers for those devices did the job.
I found it very useful to replace the quick launch with Windows 7 search feature: pressing Win key launches the start menu with the search field activated; properly configured this tool makes the quick launch obsolete (this is very similar to Launchy or Find and Run applications).
The system is very responsive and does a good job managing the available memory. All my "Windows XP" applications are running smoothly I had no trouble installing and configuring them. Wireless connection is stable and so the configured office VPN connection.
But not all is well (maybe that's why it's called beta).
I advise you to activate and switch to the administrator account after installation. Not all the programs will install with the normal user account (Office 2007 is one of them) and not all programs will uninstall (AVG is one of those).
Daemon tools is also not working but it is successfully substituted by Virtual Clone Drive.
Even at this stage I have decided to make it my primary OS and I will not switch back to XP.
These are the things I can tell you about Windows 7 after 6 hours of testing.
I have to add that I was one of those guy who considered Vista a big disappointment but Windows 7 is indeed an improvement.

I have x64 currently running a virtual machine (downloaded from neowin.net).

So far it has been very responsive and stable, sure there a few kinks here and there, but that may be due to the virtual environment, nothing too alarming in any case.

Finally, Recorded T.V. and Video links available for the start menu. (hooray!)

Hope to try this on my real hardware, cd-key pending of course. From my perspective Windows 7 is coming along extremely well and can't wait for the final release. And as much as I hate to say it, it whips Vista's behind and it's only beta. :D

PC_Tool reviewed vBeta on Jan 9, 2009

Gawd, what a bunch of whiners. Yeah, they screwed up and should have known better. It sucks that they had to go and screw up the first beta release of a perfectly good OS.

That's a strike against Microsoft, not the product you are "supposedly" reviewing.

If you haven't tried the OS, don't rate it, morons. Duh?

Using the build now, activated. Handles much better than Vista does (What does that tell us...beta code running better than the current platform..)

Vista wasn't the best. It's launch was horrifying. It's a decent OS now, and Windows 7 blows it out of the water.

I'm one of those "technical types" running it as my primary OS. It is faster, more stable, and (subjectively) more responsive than Vista ever was.

Why don't some of you actually rate the product and not the download or lack thereof?

The product I my opinion works really well, faster than previous versions. Most software, drivers that work with Vista work ok on Windows 7. I can see why some Technical People have chosen to use this - all be it in beta - as their primary O/S.

@besh32 you can upgrade, just not a in-place upgrade - but then you should not want to do that anyway. Rate the product not your issues :-)

What the hell did they expect? 10 downloads?
How can a company as big as Microsoft hype Windows 7 up so much, offer beta 1 for public download then fail to deliver through lack of bandwidth. The mind boggles.

Still I have tried 7 out from an alternative source and IMHO it is the fastest OS I've ever used. Very nice.

I'm just not sure that microsoft understand supply and demand.

ZenWarrior reviewed vBeta on Jan 9, 2009

No downlonad?! Not there?! Microsoft can't even get it released to the public after all of Ballmer's zealous hype. Such [continued] incompetence by a company with billions of debt-free dollars on hand does not bode well for this user trusting a supposedly [released today] "best ever" Microsoft OS--beta or not.

Hmmm...I recall another *very* recent Microsoft OS which fell flat on its face after similarly being super-hyped. It didn't very get far out of the gates either. (No pun intended.)

UPDATE: I'm REALLY not liking this new Start Menu + Task Bar + System Tray implementation.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Vista's was MUCH better.

For the LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY - Somebody find a way to put it back the way it used to be.

Heck, in Linux they even let you install the KDE 3.5 GUI instead of the 4.x if you want. Windows 7 should at least match that type of option with one of its own.

ORIGINAL POST:

I'm just not a fan of how the folder windows and the Internet Explorer interface has changed from XP. Even setting it to "Classic Mode" isn't working as well any more, especially on the Start Menu.

The Taskbar is a bit buggy - the whole line from the Start Menu to the "Pin App" area, then the main Application Task Bar and even the System Tray.

All that said, it installed without a single hitch. It is sleek and attractive. It seemed to run well at a decent level of performance. Disabling some of the fancy things like the preview on the taskbar, for instance, helped make it pretty snappy.

The security measures in place are probably welcome by most folks, but if you choose to install Win 7 and identify yourself as an Administrator, enough of them stay in place that it really gets in your way. It is terribly annoying.

If you are established with Admin rights, you should not have to deal with unsigned applications, complex permissions, compatibility assumptions, etc. You can turn some of those off by editing the services and de-checking some of the entries, but really, if you are Admin, you should not have to do that. Period.

Do yourself a favor though. If you have any trouble adjusting to the changes to the folder interface, go snag a dedicated file manager (like Free Commander, for instance). It's much more efficient in terms of usability, imo.

Also, you can download Maxthon (either 1.6.5.18 or the latest version 2.x release) and it will install right over the top of IE 8, and that will at least make it bearable. Or, grab Firefox and hope that works for Windows Update.

I'm not a fan of Vista OR Windows 7, for that matter. But if you have overcome all the driver, compatibility and performance issues of Vista already, I do think it is worth a look.

However, it does feel a bit "rushed" and more like an Alpha than a Beta, especially in regards to the security issues. I would have expected that in the Beta, security in particular would have gotten a lot of programming resources and been more polished than it is in this 7000 build. The taskbar issues - well, ok. But Security? I just can't avoid having concerns about that. Hence the score.

Windows XP is scheduled to get Security Patches and Driver Certification through 2014, so the choice is there. Stick with XP or give Windows 7 a shot. I'd let Vista fade like a bad memory and snag the Beta if you can.

This "beta" is already faster then vista AND xp, can't wait for final release.

It's legal. Microsoft didn't think that anyone would actually download it. Therefore, they used one of their employees' machine to host the files. That is why you're getting the "Server is too busy" error.

Lol jk. =p

Windows Server suck.

To Bad the servers are busy, guess I'll try later.

Can't rate it as I haven't got it yet so I'll go with a 3.
