Some features that Miranda says it supports doesn't work, and guess what... yep, no bonjour support. Not only that, but the uninstall left me having to run ccleaner to wipe away the nightmare left behind.

This thing used to be the go to program for IM across multiple platforms, but they've turned a deaf ear to the users, and a blind eye to today's needs.

the only "update" is a bugfix for SQLlite, so basically, for the common user this means nothing.

Bonjour support has been need for quite some time now, and the devs just ignore it. Pidgin is way better than this. It's portable, lightweight, free, and does everything this rag does

I've lost count of the number of minor point release "upgrades" this application has gotten in the last few years, with virtually no actual improvements to its functionality, only bugfixes. The developers willfully ignore all requests - see their forum for endless examples of this. It's basically going in circles at this point and we'll sadly never see a "Version 1.0".

ICQ/AIM is dead.
IRC is used by geeks, and Miranda is the worst ICQ client (not because Miranda is bad, its UI is just not suitable for IRC)
MSN is dead.
Yahoo messenger is dead.
Jabber is used by few and between.
Tlen, Netsend, Gadu/Gadu - WTF is that?
Facebook has native clients for Android/iOS - there's no need to have it on the PC.

Miranda has died because no one needs it nowadays.

I have my gripes. It's not perfect, but it's the best I've found. Trillian is more than I need, and you have to pay for the good features. Miranda is running, using peak memory of 7.5MB, and I'm connected to 5 messaging services with several tabs open.

I have had some issues with the contact list flashing white over and over. There's no real way to block requests from people not on your list, so sometimes I get spam invites. I'm sure there's a few other things I can't think of at the moment.

Overall though, it's still a great, clean interface, with tons of options.

You don't know what your talking about, because I said the same thing when I used Miranda for the first time, but I found out that with some plugins it is so customizable, you just need to get the right plugins and go through the settings.

The best chat client ever, and its getting better all the time, they also have a great forum and very helpful.

5 years using those crappy Yahoo and MSN :( I want them back.

Miranda at its CORE is extremely stable and highly customisable with minimal hassle, and while it's not quite so small as it once was it remains the best of the bunch.

Well it's back to a buggy mess again. I've never had releases be so hit and miss like they have been ever since the version 8 builds although the latter ones of 7 were heading that way too.

The biggest problem(aside from the bugs) is that with this being such a bare bones program it, much like firefox, NEEDS 3rd party plug-ins to become more functional. That means that if the developers of the plug-ins stop developing you might be out of luck and that has become the case here. The old plug-ins are causing crashes and unfortunately they're not being updated which leaves Miranda thin.

While I've always appreciated the complete customization and lightweight nature of Miranda it has now become not really worth the hassle.

Targaff, I'm sure you feel you've made a point but I doubt that anyone but yourself knows what the hell it is because I know certainly can't decipher your gibberish to see one. Looking at your review history however makes things clear. You are argumentative and seem to be seeking some kind of attention on here because you aren't getting any in your real life and now you won't be getting anymore from me either. Have fun with your pompous self.

Rather like using a rating criteria that has nothing at all to do with the actual software, you mean? Really, if actually being able to differentiate between a beta and an RC, and why that makes a difference, is the definition of misinformed, then colour me donkey any day of the week, twice on weekends.

The developers have included a 64-bit version with the newest cycle. I can't say I'm convinced that it's really needed, but if nothing else it'll put a stop to the endless requests on the forum. There have been some teething issues, though, so no doubt another beta will be along soon, much to the chagrin of the unwashed BN masses.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so full of themselves while being such misinformed asses.

First of all releasing 3 betas in a day is not a proper "development cycle" in spite of what you think and sites like this are intended for feedback on a per release basis. Giving something a good or poor rating based solely on your preference towards a piece of software rather then the release in question is just foolish.

This release is stable and still runs lean but the inability to choose one font and have it be the font for many things instead of having to do it manually for each is a pain that they introduced with the v8 releases and I wish that they would revert back to the old way of doing that. It kind of reminds me of VLC in that the preferences window was daunting at first but now in their attempts to simplify it they've succeeded in making it confusing in a new way

Well I've been using this final enough that I can say the stability issues I was having are back to normal but some of the plug-ins are broken now.

This is the fatal flaw that firefox suffers from too and that is having 3rd party plug-ins. They can give some great functionality but often impact the core negatively with heavy load or crashes and incompatibility with future releases.

With that said I will bump my rating back up one but not back to the 5 I normaly give it.

Miranda still does the job better than its competitors. The steps that have been taken thus far to attempt to improve on its user-friendliness have not been wholly successful, but on the whole it's still Smaller (well, relative to the alternatives) and Faster. There aren't many apps out there that pack so much into a 1.5MB download.

That review really, really rings true now. Since then there have been 6 RC's and a (so called) final build. It's beginning to look like amateur hour and with each release I'm getting more problems. I've also never had it crash as many times as I am having with v8 releases. So again, I think they need to do proper testing before releasing every other day (some times twice in a day)

Gotta love arrogant people like Neowhatever. I updated when MIM prompted me to... Since it AUTOMATICALLY checked for updates. After updating, POOF! All of my accounts except for ICQ went bye-bye. Nice example of semi-automated breakage.

It didn't take long to find a way to crash MIM 100% of the time by simply right-clicking the status area of the main window.

Obviously quality checked by a small gang of retarded monkeys.

Miranda IM is Smaller, Faster and Easier to use multi IM (thats what gives you the installer), but it can be turn 180 degrees with various plugins and not using the right versions are the most common cause some users like vincent326 and to think - its a junk - not knowing that 3rd party plugin they use (since 2001 sometimes is actually crashing their program). For the rest - people who actually read the release notes and the forum it works without crashing using 50 or more plugins - why is that :)

In their attempts to clean up the options window they have altered the way you change the font and while it might be a little cleaner it now lacks the option to have say your contact font options be the same as your status bar which means you have have to set EVERY font separately now. That won't endear it to those who say it takes too long to configure.

2 other problems I'm having are;
It crashes Transbar every other time I close Miranda. No other program in my tray does this.
The tabsrrm plugin which they link you to that is supposed to be specifically for this build is missing the icons dll which miranda now reminds me of at EVERY single start up. This can be corrected by downloading the Nova icon pack found here http://miranda.or.at/TabSRMM:Files

But Its having to jump through hoops to get miranda set up right that makes it not for everyone

For users who complain about the GUI, you can use these absolutely stunning Miranda skins. WIth skinning, Miranda looks better than other standard IMs.

@prghon: don't be fooled by version number runaway game. Some number their version by 0.8.1, 0.8.2, 0.8.34, etc. Other numbers there version 1.0, 2.0, 34.0 etc. Google Chrome comes out of beta directly at version 3. Opera is already at version 10. Whether you call Miranda 0.8 or Miranda 8.0 it's the same program.

I've tried Miranda before and gave up too quick. Recently, I've given her another shot, looked into a few plugins and I am truly satisfied. The plugins are easy to install and configure & much less hassle than I assumed (I only use 2-3).
She has a really low footprint and works amazingly well.

What an error for people to be comparing Miranda to other huge IM's that serves different audiences.

Miranda strongest feature is it's flexibility. The user can start with a basic default install of Miranda and from there take it to whatever level of complexity they may want thanks to the vast selection of plug ins.

Trying to compare it to the above mentioned IM's, is like trying to compare Foobar2000 to itunes (or Windows Media Player).

If you really want to appreciate what this program has to offer you may be willing to invest some time to learn it. If you can't invest a little time, then this app is clearly not for you

Ok, it’s time to present Miranda 0.8 RC2 (build 0.8.0.33). Another two weeks of fixing bugs passed, and here is the result:

- almost all IRC bugs were fixed;

- some minor fixes for the core.

So we have now the very narrow set of important bugs to be fixed… hopefully we’ll see RC3 soon & then - the release of 0.8.

I just can't get on with Miranda, I like the idea of a lilghtweight multi-protocol IM, but Miranda is just too fugly, with way too many plugins (so many it's just confusing to know which ones to install).
Overall, as a user experience it's fiddly to set up, fiddly to configure and after hours of tweaking it's still fuglyl.

I can't understand why people keep comparing Miranda to Digsby, Trillian, Pidgin et al. I mean, sure, compare all you want, but why rate Miranda down just because it doesn't work according to *your* expectations? If Digsby/etc is working fine for you, great. was never a fan of ICQ-like IMs. i grew up on AIM and used various AIM alternatives for the past 5 or so years. recently was using GAIM/pidgin and then switched to Digsby. Digsby is by far the best.

to be fair, i havent used Miranda in years and ive never used Trillian b/c of a cost. if you want AIM-like IM, nothing tops digsby. with 1 AIM, 1 MSN, facebook, and gmail all turned on it's using 25MB RAM and looks the prettiest of all the IM clients. it takes a little while to originally start up, but it has an autoupdater and all kinds of popups (can be turned off) and you can even chat inside the popup notifications so you can continue working without tabbing b/w applications.

sry miranda, you just cant do these things, or as nicely as digsby does. old-school users might still love the ICQ-like thing but overall features, GUI, and as an entire package, digsby beats all other free clients.

I love Miranda and have used it for a very long time. Recently I switched to Digsby as it DOES already have social media plugins as well as a more organized menu system and is a more pleasant overall experience. Digsby does have tons of opt-out applications in it and a few things that a pro user will want to disable (the creators have made it to utilize distributed computing when your computer is idle as a way to monetize Digsby).

So - my Miranda rating is down from a 5 to a 4 because there is real competition in the multi-im client world. Miranda needs to polish up a bit and start adding features and making itself more viable to end users!

If someone is having a legitimate problem and the solution isn't easily accessible to them then they should inform the rest of us about it, thats how a site like this should work. Some of you people need to get over yourselves.

I've had a problem since upgrading and that is with the interaction with the ieview plugin. For some reason the headers for the template I am using no longer shows up, everything else does though. I've looked through the options and can't seem to figure it out which leads to my only real gripe about Miranda. While they have tried to clean up the preferences I still find them to be a bit of a mess. They did fix the msn file tranfer issue I had many builds ago so heres hoping they fix the rest

Miranda betas have worked for me great in the past, but not this one. No plug-ins, only used Yahoo and AOL, but kept crashing when I send messages. Tried to go back, but screen freezes up on me. Perhaps it is because their changelog shows "significantly rewritten AIM & YAHOO protocols."

Because of that, would not recommend this or further Miranda betas until they clean up these protocols.

Tried to delete entirely and do a true reinstall, but I get no reaction when I click on an AOL buddy. Sorry, cannot recommend this one. Miranda has been stellar in the past, but this one needs a lot of work.

Update 1645 US Eastern Time 11/11/08 -- bugs were addressed and updated #24 is available for upload. Works again, so I upgraded rating to 5/5. This prompt response actually leaves me more impressed with these guys than before. Thanks, borkra. Cheers, Frank

netean: after unzipping the files, I only keep clist_nicer.dll (among the other clist_xxx.dll files) in the Plugins folder, this way it uses this style automatically. In fact, out of the numerous plugins, I only keep 9. I copy/paste the new ones, select yes when it asks if I want to overwrite, and when done, all the selected ones are the one I don't need, so press delete, and I'm done. It might take a couple of minutes to go through the plugins and delete the unneeded ones, but doing what I said, it's a one off effort. And as far as I know, there are no software that do not need a one off effort to configure it to your taste.

Miranda drives me nuts:

Out of the box it is painfully ugly. Yes it's highly customisable, but a) why doesn't it look better by default, b)customisation takes time. Time that I have to invest making a program run "reasonably" is time I'd rather be doing something else.

it's a very powerful, very feature rich IM application, if you have the time to customise it and download the right plugins.

Ugly? Quite the contrary, try these skins: http://browse.deviantart.../im/miranda/?loggedin=1. Then customize fonts & colors of the contact list. This may take sometimes as Miranda doesn't have selectable themes at install time. There is some learning. However, the reward is great, Miranda looks really great, it has tabbed interface, no ads no craps, no popup. This is worth some learning.

My Miranda works and looks better than MSN Messenger of most of my collegues. Unfortunately, most prefer to bear the inconveniences rather than trying to learn a new tool.

Exceptionally clean and customizable. Next to Adium for Mac, this is an outstanding chat client. I've had issues however connection to AOL servers at times which seems to be a problem with the software, not AOL for I can connect using Pidgin or Trillian easily. All-in-all a great piece of software, especially while still in alpha, pre version 1 status!!

I love and use Miranda exclusively, however, as with Foobar, it's very difficult to convince others to switch when the default install is very plain and there is a lack of initiative on the development team to make the product viable to end users. Foobar is making those changes now as they get close to the 1.0 mark. WinAMP is a great example of how an application can appeal to both power users and end users - and it's something I'd like Miranda to move towards. The endless releases of bug fixes, none of which I've ever noticed, are a little boring. I'd like to see an entire version focused on user experience.

This all inclusive Instant Messenger can be customized by the user for each IM service used. I agree its stable and easy to use IF you have experience beyond logging on to yahoo doing light messenging. However some users who have limited knowledge may have a bit of difficulty at first but after some use should be comfortable using it.

Very good, lightweight IM client. With that said, I think a lot of people (myself included) prefer Pidgin because it supports more features in many protocols such as the OSCAR protocol. File transfers, for example, are functional in Pidgin. Miranda is very customizable but you've got to put a lot of work into it to get it up and running.

Pidgin? "Its OK program" (sic) but Miranda is far better.
Why? Well, just because I decided to say so I guess.
A 5 from me, very stable even in beta, and connects me successfully to all IM protocols I need. In fact, it connects to too many of them, I have to delete plugins for protocols I don't use (e.g. GG, Jabber and AIM). Of course, this takes me a good 5 seconds on each decompression.
In case people are put off by the look, other "skins" are bundled to fit better in today's desktops.

I have to say - these betas and alphas are kinda boring to me =). I love Miranda and it seems that none of these bug fixes have ever made a difference in my experience. It's solid and works very well! I can't wait until the application matures to a place wherein support for Audio/Video is added. My main desire? Good program, nice and clean!! Does everything i need for basic instant messaging. I had grown tired of all the crazy features in trillian, since I didnt use them!

I love that miranda is NOT skinned. Just a simple window based on STANDARD UI.

I have to rate it a 3 because it regularly has issues with lock ups and bad screen draws. This seems to only happen when it's been running for many hours.

Never had an issue settings up multiple accounts with miranda. Always worked fine 'out of the box' for me. Small footprint and fast is another thing i like about this client. Many many options to customize its look and feel if you so desire.

I mainly use Pidgin for IM but Miranda is great when your playing games online and don't want your IM program to eat all your ram.

This turned into garbage now. I downloaded the latest Preview released and installed it over my old files. Now it won't recognize my old profile because they started storing them in C:\Document and Settings\blah blah blah instead of Miranda's own folder. I agree, the best third party IM software. Again, speed, small footprint, less resources. This software is powerfull! You can change every little thing in options. It is plug-in able. The plug-ins are endless (and good...). It has some small stability and compatability issues but nothing to be worry about. The best IM software out there.

I always praise Miranda, but I have to level one criticism at the program - Linux functionality. It vaguely works under Wine, but too much friggin around is needed. I can't wait until someone 'picks up the gauntlet' and starts a port to native Linux support! Just wish I could do it myself. :)

I have come to love Miranda after trying it a few times and bailing back to Trillian or Gaim. After I became frusterated with the bloat that GAIM has due to GTK, and the lack of updates to Trillian (I tried an alpha of Astra and well... I understand what 'Alpha' means more than ever now)...

So Miranda lacks a lot of great features... it lacks webcams ... it doesn't have the secure chat that Trillian has as a stock option... and yeah, it takes some configuring to get it just right.

I'd suggest Miranda to users who use Foobar as their MP3 players. If you'd like an incredible amount of flexibility and appreciate a solid core at the heart of your apps with few frills, Miranda is the way to go.

Just be patient with it. It can do what you want it to do (unless that includes audio / video stuff). You just have to spend some time with it and the results are very rewarding.

I've used Miranda now for about a year.

Comparing MIM's usability to a stick-shift Porsche is a very poor analogy. As just one example: When I set up an IM client, one of the most important things I do is enable some sort of encryption scheme. With a good client, it is easy and simple. With MIM, I have to try different plugins, different versions of plugins, then I have to configure them, and test them--and then I have to walk other people through plugin installation and setup (because invariably, some of my contacts are not extremely computer literate).

If I have a stick-shift Porsche, at least I do not generally face the prospect of having to teach others to drive it. They can continue to drive whatever they want; our cars do not have to be "compatible".

I know it feels nice to insult people by saying that they don't "do things for themselves", but again, this completely misses the point. I do everything for myself, but that doesn't mean I want to struggle with poor usability every step of the way.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There are two kinds of people who come here: Those who think that configurability has to come at the expense of usability, and those who know better.

Akeru is right that this isn't perfect. It lacks a few options that something like MSN has but that means it also lacks the huge footprint and all the advertising.

To knock a program that takes some time to get to work the way you want is like saying a Porsche that comes in stick isn't a great piece of engineering because you need to learn to drive it.

The beauty of Miranda IM to me is not that it's so configurable, but that it's so lightweight. I've done deep customization of the application, and it looks and performs excellent when set up that way, but I always end up going back to plain old Miranda IM in the end, because I miss its blazing speed and tiny footprint. I don't care for doing everything you're complaining about. In fact, I don't use anything other than what it comes with, and most of that I even disable.

The reason I give it a 4 of 5 is that while the client works very well, it seems that not all protocols have enough developer support. Also, you'll find that clients tend to have incompatibility between each other for file transfers and such. Things like that need to be ironed out.

I've been using Miranda IM (MIM) for years, and still use it today. It has many strengths, including configurability and flexibility.

However, Metshrine makes some very good, unassailable points. MIM is far too hard and time-consuming to set up and configure. Now that I've put all that time and effort in, I really enjoy using MIM, but I wouldn't want to go through it again, nor would I want to help someone else set up their installation exactly as they want it.

The people who can't grasp what Metshrine is saying don't understand the concept of "usability". You can, as I've done, set up MIM exactly as you want it, and it will work well. It will be powerful, complete with (for example) customized, tabbed message windows, popup messages, reconnection capability, encrypted messaging, and so on.

But it shouldn't take hours to get it set up that way!

One of my correspondents and I spent an hour and a half the other day getting one particular plugin set up and working semi-correctly. We're both very experienced computer users (especially him--a hardcore developer). This is just one illustrative case in point.

If I was rating MIM only on "end result", I'd easily give it a 5. But when I consider ground-up usability, it goes way down.

That's what "not to like"!

@Akeru: I understand your point of view. I do not really have the option of running a bare-bones MIM. I use it for work, and encryption is essential. I also deal with 10s of thousands of messages (no exaggeration), so plugins like History++ (as just one example) are required. I really doubt MIM would perform noticeably better even if I did away with all that stuff anyway.

@Metshrine, it is true that Miranda option settings are quite overwhelming. And the update procedure is quite complicate for a casual user. That is the reaction I usually see when people try Miranda. They got discouraged after the first 10 minutes. Although they were really impressed when they see Miranda on my machine.

However, the complexity is all relative. For example, I don't know MSN Messenger even if it seems simpler. And my daughter can handle herself Miranda Dev update after I showed her once.

I can not speak for people who don't want to spend the effort to learn. And learning how to use Miranda is small as an effort to the benefits you get. Not mentioning that Miranda is open source, so its development won't be steered toward any questionable commercial destiny.

Why do I test a product I dont like? I like Miranda, however, it has such glaring functionality problems that I will rate it low when it deserves it. Testing a product is just that, testing. I test all sorts of applications as I am sure most of the people here on BETANEWS do.

Miranda requires far too much configuration and plugins out of the box just to get the same functionality you can get out of other clients. Want multiple accounts? Tell mom and pop to make a copy of A dll file and see what response you get.

Miranda has a lot of promise, however, the amount of work required to get basic functionality working is its biggest downfall.

Yes, it does require plugins to have it work in a customizable way. Yes, it needs plugins to take advantage of the many great skins out there, But it works right out of the box for those who only want to have a multi protocol IM. Stop being so mileading with your trolling!

Personally I had issues with MSN and sending files and it use to hang on me but it hasn't for many builds now. I'd rather do a little leg work and find plug-ins that suit my needs rather than be forced in having a bloated client.

Trillian is better than Miranda as far as support for webcams and other features that many users will demand.

Miranda is a superior engine that has an amazing amount of flexibility and can be customized to be the perfect messenger for any individual who does not need voice and video. I've really enjoyed it and appreciate the low memory footprint.

Pidgin/Gaim has the upperhand in a FEW areas such as the audio / video pursuit. I really wish that more developers would jump onboard with Miranda, however, I do not know the politics surrounding it's development team and thus don't know if it could end out being the Mozilla of chat. It would be really nice if it would be, however, I see Gaim doing that first as its use of the GTK framework would put it in a much better place to transition to the Mozilla framework.

For those who complain about "not ready for use right away" - try Miranda Packs, build by others. If You're too lazy (too stupid?) to configure Miranda to suit your needs - download prebuilt package (there's plenty of them).

I'm not sure that there's a freaking lot of people who requires multiple accounts AND can't copy dll in the same time (it's also not the thing you should do every morning, just once for each new account). If they can't find out that they sould copy dll then they officially SUCK, because they can't google for "miranda multiple accounts".

Miranda has far too many little annoyances and bugs for my liking. I have reported numerous bugs on their site and bug tracker, only to receive the reply that it must be my computer when I can get it reproduced on several other peoples computers.

Miranda, by default, is not ready for primetime use. It takes about 20-30 minutes of configuration to get it to the bare minimum of what the official clients can do, and the default skin is dead ugly.

In my opinion (Please take note of that word), trillian pro beats this hands down and trillian astra will blow this out of the water.

Miranda is OK

but it does'nt look good from the start and I found it a bit fiddly to set up - not enough to be off putting, it just felt more of a fiddle than Trillian, Gaim, msn, yahoo etc.

Bit disappointed that I can't log into Google talk... apparently it need SSL installed (seperately) on my machine - no other app I use needs this installed so not sure why it's necessary.

I also get a bit narked about it ALWAYS asking me to put in my irc details when it starts. and always giving me a little pop up box when I connect to servers (both of which are just really annoying)

other than that. it's small, light on memory usage, and seems to work with most clients (msn, yahoo aim etc)

In my opinion though Trillian Basic is way better than this, (the pro version even more so) and GAIM is a bit better.

My 12 years old daughter's mocked me with my MirandaIM because it doesn't have all the "fun" features of MSN. After a while, her frustration with MSN grows to a point she asked me to install Miranda on her computer. She got fed up with a tons of flashing icons, a buddy list full of silly screen names, pop up screens, advertisement, etc. After about a week, she was sold to Miranda for good. Thanks to Miranda's flexibility, tabbed message window, skins, etc.

As for "but lacks many features for power users", I really dont think you have looked at it enough - it is the IM for power users. Ohh and the support of multiple accounts has been planned for a long time, its just hard to do without breaking support for the hundreds of plugins, but is still planned.

In over an hour on the site the only way I found to make that work involved manually copying and changing the names of .dll files. For such an often used feature, the UI should include support for that.

I've been a long time Trillian user because of its ease of use and many plugins. I tried Miranda IM out a long, long time ago when it first began and at the time it didn't have the plugins and support that it has now. I downloaded this version and was very suprised to see it had the newest AIMOscar plugin installed by default. For now I'm sticking with Miranda because it has so many customization options than anyone could ever dream of. I rate this a 4 out of 5 because I had to spend about 30 minutes getting everything the way I like it.

I made the swtich to this and have abondened messenger forever. Love the plug in approach but one knock on it that has yet to be fixed in that I find this program hangs if you don't use it while its running. Many times it appears that I'm still online yet if I try to send a message after being idle for awhile it says It can't send message because I'm not connected!

Miranda's GUI is superb. It's simple, neat, functional, and native. The only glitch I can find that's present in the latest builds is that the clist menus aren't themed as menus but as application background.

Overall, a superb and simple messenger.

Metshrine, I did not say it was anti-competitive to introduce new features - I'm all for adding in new functions to MSN (although one has to ask why it took them so long to catch up with ICQ's offline messaging). What IS anti-competitive is deliberately introducing code to block or harm other IM clients - which is exactly what Microsoft have done. If you don't see anything wrong with a closed-source protocol that deliberately blocks 3rd-party IM clients, then you've got rocks in your head.

Same issue as I've outlined below twice now. My thread goes unanswered at the forums, as well as the bug report, being blown off as an issue with GAIM when in fact every other IM client I've used, trillian, naim, the official clients, etc, all work fine when interacting with gaim. Until this bug is resolved, a 3/5 for an otherwise outstanding IM client.

And tenoq, its not anti-competitive when MSN is upgraded to add new features. Other clients just have to adapt and edit their code to work. If MS never updated the code for the MSN protocol, we wouldnt have any of the features that are available in it today. So please, before you go off on your anti-ms rant, learn what it is exactly you are complaining about.

How is a bug that annoys a user not related to the client? Do you know what a review is? I am sorry, but a bug that annoys a user is plenty of reason to rate a program lower. The developer also stated its in the way the gaim client sends messages out in HTML format (along with its handling of special characters). The odd thing is, no other client has an issue receiving these messages. So please, before you attack me (and do so hypocritically, where you whine about me rating it poorly and dont rate the program itself), learn what a review is and dont tell a user how they should rate an application. I will rate this a 5 when I feel it deserves it. With this bug, I cannot rate it a 5 because to me it is not a 5.

Idiot reviewers, as usual.

This client isn't suppose to do all the frilly bulls*** that the native IM clients do - it's purpose is to give you a messaging client, not a toy. And it fulfills that purpose with 5 stars.

Rating it less because it doesn't do something it's designed not to do is foolish: it's like rating DVD Decrypter a 3 because it doesn't have an e-mail editor built-in.

And for the nuffie below who rated it a 1 because his friends PCs have issues, that's just ludicrous.

Anyway, another 5 stars, the program is still working as well as always. MSN glitch has almost been completely resolved - one just wishes Microsoft would stop the anti-competitive behaviour of introducing the code to mess with programs like Miranda.

Same issue as below. This is the only client, that when interacting with gaim clients, that cant properly handle html messages or special characters sent via the gaim client. All other clients handle it fine. My bug report also seems to be in a state of being ignored as happened to my forum post.

Desides is right, and it is not wrong to say that Miranda's extensibility is simultaneously its biggest asset and its biggest problem. The fact is that the mess in the options dialogue is a recognized issue, but for now at least it's not one that's going to be solved, not without either breaking a lot of plugins or some ingenious tinkering on somebody's part. Configuring it just so can and usually does take hours.

That said, however, Miranda's target audience has never really been the "pick up and play" cross section, and while it is obviously a drawback, the program is nevertheless eminently suited to the sort of person who is quite prepared to tinker about with this and that to set it up just how they like it. Marking it down for not being something it was never really minded to be is therefore a little churlish in my eyes.

Amazing flexibility - as of v0.5, I've switched from Trillian (and formerly Gaim v2.0 Beta 2).

I could go into a long rant about what is better etc. etc. - but will simply say - it's extremely object oriented, full-featured, and has a low memory footprint.

Moving from v4 to v5 surely took some time, espicially upgrading all plugins.. some that are only available in the forums and not in the download area (popup+ for instance, which is a must have! The version available from the addons site is not compatible with v5)

Hopefully the plugin for checking upgrades of plugins will take care of some of these problems from now on?

As said before: If you have time(knowledge) to configure this... then Miranda is absolutely the most awesome and most powerful IM available. Once configured you can transport your installation by just copying files, this is what appeals the most to me!

If you don't have time/knowledge then Miranda is a great working IM with ugly GUI that easily can be made portable (ie. run from USB stick without being administrator)

Free, open-source, updated often, light on system resources and formidably stable, the most configurable IM out there is the best there is for Windows. I had been using Trililan before stumbling upon this gem. I had never managed to configure Trillian’s interface to my liking. Miranda’s interface is simple and efficient right out of the box. With a little fine-tuning, how minimalist it can become is a gift in today’s bloated interface world.

Miranda is fantastic. under 8 megs of ram, and basically 0% cpu usage (while transfering files over AIM)!
Lack of tabs kept me away before, BUT TABS ARE a possibility, just copy the Scriver plugin to the plugins directory. http://addons.miranda-im...on=viewfile&id=1885

With few additional plugins and proper tuning she becomes unbeatable (for ICQ, at least).
Alpha-builds are very rich in terms of new features, and stable enougth to use, not only to test.

uncbean, you should try to run miranda32.exe (typically located in c:\program files\miranda im\)
You know, "exe" files is actually the programms, not shourtcuts on your desktop or in your menu.
Miranda is designed in the way it does not rely on windows registry or other things like that. Because of this, Miranda works everywhere and everytime you launch it, and you don't need to reinstall it every time.

Adrian: AIM file transfers are there in the most recent alphas, you're not looking hard enough. Direct Connections will follow in due course.

templar: yes, they're not releasing new versions, that's why there was a new stable released not a fortnight ago and these dev builds are released nearly weekly. And Trillian's not much to recommend when it's suffering from the ICQ issue that this version of Miranda fixes.

Not sure about your problems, uncbean, sorry... did the stable version (0.4.0.2) work at all?

I used Miranda for about a year or so. It consumes so little memory when running (sometimes only about 512KB!).

But they hardly release any new version. And the countless alpha & beta releases are getting more and more buggy and unuseable.

I gave up on Miranda.... :(

I switched to Trillian instead. It's much more stable and polished.

Designed to function with a minimum of system resources, this is the best IM I know of. The program is very simple in it's default form, but has been programmed to be expanded and customized to fit your needs. There are thousands of addons which you can download from the Miranda web site add the functions that *You* want. If you take the time to learn the program you will not regret it. Great program, very active support community, and definitely worth 5 stars IMHO. I've been using it for years and am very happy with it :-)

You can fully customize it.
It uses small resources.
...and works perfect on my usb stick.

There are plenty of plugins available to adopt it to your needs. My favorite is the secureim which adds encryption...

I'm using Miranda more than 3 years and count it much better than other multiproticol IMs. I always try to install the last beta release and give my "two penny" to program development as free tester.

Nice program, but it's only an old-fashioned IM program, you can't tell people to trash other programs and only use Miranda. If you only want to chat it's almost perfect, but nowadays users have webcams, headsets, and want to use them in an easy way. So, for example, Miranda can't really "replace" msn. Yes it's bloated and slow, but you can SEE your partner with one click, and the registration/installation process it's easy even for unexperienced users.

I'm also noticing some bugs in basic protocol plugins, like the file transfer with trillian users, and some slow upgrades in the msn protocol, so i don't think miranda deserves a 5 anymore.

Miranda is fantastic. You don't have to add anything, just start it, enter your info and type away. If there's a protocol you miss, you can download it.

Three reasons why it is better than the competition:
* It's free. Entirely free. Not a free version with adds or anything, but free.
* It's flexible. You do much to put together a version that suits you, both in looks and functionality. (For looks, I recommend the plugin ieView amongst others).
* It's clean. It does what it says, no bloat, no malware/adware.

I understand if the options can be a bit intimidating for som people, however.

Last tip: Use the update plugin to automatically keep all your plugins up to date.

First impression: very lite, basic, dull. featureless. but very fast and little memory usage.

After adding a few plugins, skins, icons, and sounds, it's the best damn looking IM client there is, still uses very little memory.

but it does lack file transfering through the AIM protocol (cmon snaphat!) and that is a very important feature IMO.
also I doesnt clear away messages when users come back to online mode. (or I can't find that option)
and it's alittle difficult to setup.

My uses of IM clients went from Trillian to GAIM to MirandaIM, and I think I'm staying with Miranda.

Your "facts" are based on your subjective feeling of design and functionality - which most likely is more based on habit than actual understanding of good design and functionality.

Please stop slandering analogies that you don't understand .. especially when you actually try to use them yourself as a container for biased perceptions.

Now understand this.

If you don't like the way Trillian works, you uninstall it .. If you don't like the way Miranda works, you change it. Want Miranda to look and feel like Trillian? You can probably get plugins for that too. Two different philosophies doing the same basic thing .. send messages and files.

Until something else comes along this is THE client to use if you want to personalize your multi-protocol client. If you don't care about that, use Trillian or another client. Hell, use the original clients! The only thing Trillian has going is that it .. works. It's integrated and tested. It's "safe". Nothing else.

And, by the way, of course Miranda works behind firewalls since it uses the same procotols that the original clients use - with the same limitations. Passive to passive have always been a problem for ICQ (and any Peer-to-peer). Sending via the server fixed that in the original client.

First off, although I respect your opinion, please respect mine. You love Miranda, great for you. I did use Miranda for a week or so, and went back to Trillian because I think it's better (as explained before). It's a question of taste. You say my opinion is useless, when in fact the only thing you can condemn me for is having an opinion different from yours. Well, I've got bad news for all narrow minded people: your opinion is not the standard to which everyone else has to comply to. I'm as much entitled to submit my review than you are. And instead of saying "XXX is great, YYY sucks", well at least I give some reasons to justify my point. Note that I never said Miranda was bad, I said it was not as good, and rated it a 4.

And as for the car example, the analogy is so wrong that people can't even argue with it despite the heavy bias. I could take the same analogy and say that Trillian is a Ferrari because it has better design, better functionality and bla and bla whereas Miranda is a Fiat 500 which sucks out of the box and you have to stick lot of crap to it to get it to work decently and bla and bla, but I won't because I prefer facts and objectivity.

Having using YahooMessenger for 5 years now... unfortunately the latest versions form Yahoo have big problems (high memory/cpu usage, hangs/crashes) which drive me crazy...

I'll switch to Miranda, but unfortunately it does not work behind firewalls :( - I'm not able to connect to Yahoo/MSN/ICQ from my corporate network, things that the Yahoo's messenger manages to do (the other proprietary messengers do also for their service).

Comparing Miranda with Trillian is like comparing an agile sportscar with a beige Volvo.

Both will take you to the mall and if you're happy with the basic comfort package you get with the Volvo, fine. No problem. But it's still a beige Volvo. And, sure, the sportscar is a bit more demanding of the driver. But that's what it's about. Dull but comfortable driving to pick up the kids, or a sleek, fast, fun driving experience that is a bit more demanding.

For all the Trillian/Volvo fan boys: Compare apples with apples.

Trillian is a basic all-in-one package, with limited tweaking/customization possibilities. Miranda is free (no "get PRO for $$ and get an even BETTER version" philosophy), made to be tweakable and .. what most Trillian people doesn't seem to grasp .. the plugin philosophy is an essential part of the whole experience. (Perhaps not surprising since Trillian is very limited.)

If you want something that you can, basically, only skin in a limited way and add a few plugins to .. if you don't care about the two versions commercial bullcrap and don't care about those oh-so-difficult plugins .. Go get your beige Volvo, er, Trillian.

If want to be able to change the look, feel and function of almost everything in a totally free and open client .. Go Miranda.

Miranda is good, but Trillian is better. Miranda can be set up to rival with Trillian, but it requires a lot of extra downloads and tweaking. I did most of it, but eventually went back to Trillian nonetheless.
I appreciate that Miranda is light out of the box (that's actually a plus), but it's just too bland.
I'd rate it a 3, but its portability (I can just copy it on my pen drive and carry it around, thus using it without installation) make me shift my rating slightly up, and I'll round it up to a 4.

its nice but its way to messy when you try to find what you in need terms of plugins or skins.

For instance if a skin need a special plugin to work it should be packaged with the skin file.

Same goes for other plugins that need other plugins.

Amazing piece of software. By itself, it's a perfectly stable, powerful instant messenger that takes up barely any RAM (compared to more bloated software such as Trillian which is also a multi protocal chat program). Very light, and doesn't need installation. Minimised, with no windows opened, Miranda uses 2.3MB. File transfer worked fine in MSN, but not in Yahoo.
Trillian offers more features, so I'll use Miranda a while and decide later whether to stick to it or go back to Trillian.
*EDIT* after getting smileys, skin and sounds working, I just uninstalled Trillian :)

There seems to be a prevailing thought amongst the people who post bad marks here that Miranda is an AIM client, when that's clearly just one small facet of its capabilities. If you're only after an AIM client, then why are you bothering with a multiprotocol client anyway? That's really rather absurd - almost as absurd as blaming it for the issue with nicknames, which I seem to recall was an issue on AOL's end rather than with Miranda. If all you want is an AIM client for swapping files with your friendz, then this clearly wasn't intended for your use in any event; if, on the other hand, you want a messaging program that is simultaneously light, powerful and highly customizable, with good connectivity with all the major protocols, then Miranda might well be up your street.

A programmers main goal is to make the application easier for the user, not the programmer. This is not the case with Miranda IM however, if you want more/extended features - you're going to have to do it on your own. Because asking the plugin authors won't do you any good, this is why code is open source. If you want something that it doesn't have, do it yourself.

Pros:
* Light application
* Highly Customizable
* No advertisements or anything

Cons:
* Somehow it got 2 of my AIM names suspended. I don't think AOL likes these 3rd party applications, if they don't - why did they bother creating the TOC protocol? I know Miranda is linked to the suspension, because after a month of using it, my first name got suspended. Then I created a new name. 1 month later, this name was suspended as well. That was when I uninstalled this application and went back to the default AIM client. I didn't get any response whatsoever when I tried to contact AOL about the suspensions.
* Only thing you can do with the AIM plugin is send and receive messages, you can't: send files, directly connect, set privacy options.

I think it couldn't be easier than this...

The messenger itself is great, but I would like to see a bit more control imposed on the myriad of plug-ins. Some of them are sorely needed, but present problems both within and outside of the program code when you install them and the process for purging an errant plug-in leaves a bit to be desired at best.

Miranda has all the essential features of other clients while not being bloated. If you take your time to customize it and read about how things work you won't go back to the other bloated messengers. There is an excellent plugin called tabsrmm available at http://www.miranda.or.at/forums/ which adds a tabbed messenger window with many features. There are plugins for popup notify events and even a plugin now which allows scripting. This will always be much messenger of choice. Also, there are NO ADS ANYWHERE.

I used to use Trillian, but it has a few major issues with the MSN network (packets not being received) and so I tried out Miranda. While it works as expected, it just doesn't feel fully featured. I prefer to use Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) as it is a much nicer app.

About bugs. Before saying "no bugs" make sure, you tryed long enougth all miranda default protocol plug-ins (AIM, Yahoo, etc), not only ICQ. Myself, i use only this one...It works fine, i can say.
Also, be sure to test thease Miranda Packs - pre-configured miranda clients with logs of preconfigured plug-ins. While they my be not exactly what you really wants, they show, HOW beautiful Miranda CAN be.

The program is ok but there are far too many bugs . I don't understand why it gets such great reviews ..(btw so short) .. I can't click on the aim icon in the buddylist and it cut off the bottom part of my buddylist . Some funky bugs , This program always has .I have tried this on other computers in the house and i have the same issues .

I'll stick with gaim until miranda makes one stable release ..

Update : I can get around my issues since you can pretty much do whatever you want with this program . im sure the next release will fix the bottom toolbar a bit better .

also , why not have multiple acounts for each network instead of doing all that crap with the dll files etc.

Miranda is the best IM software for PC, by far. You are right about that you need a lot of tweaking, but that's for good, not bad. That's called customization. You can get EXACTLY what you need, where you want, how you want and, using resources efficiently. And this last point is the bigest problem I see in any other IM software. Starting with the pestilent M$N me$$enger and ending with the not so bad (but still fatware) trillian.
And also, don't forget that miranda is FREE. And not only free but open source. six stars if allowed.

I've tried using this, and it took a LOT of tweaking just to get it to connect to AIM correctly. Then there's the missing features that other clients like GAIM and Trillian include. This uses an older protocol to connect to AIM, which is lacking. It's nice that it's free and like Trillian has a small memory footprint, but I still think Trillian is a much better client, especially if you spring for trillian pro.

The modular design allows the IM to be customized to an incredible degree. It's extremely flexible, both functional and visual.

The only downside is that when you first install it, it looks basic and naked. You have to spend some time with it to make it look pretty and get some plugins for some useful features.

I originally switched to MIM because I couldn't help notice how much RAM the other big name IMs used up. MIM on the other hand uses only about 3MB, and a half a meg when idle. Getting low resource demanding programs for those that run 24/7 in the background = like adding more RAM for your system.

Miranda takes a day or two to configure to suite your personal needs. A front end for finding/updating plugins would be nice...

Once done with configuring Miranda you have the currently most powerful IM for Windows at your hands. If you are a programmer/scripter you can do virtually anything. You can easily move Miranda around, backup up by plain filecopy, or even store/run it on a USB memory stick.

Take your time to customize your copy of Miranda initially, it is well worth the effort since you only do updates after that (which you easily roll back by copying your backup folder to the installation folder :).

This is *THE* IM for Windows, IMHO. Thumbs up!

A solid minimilistic approach to multi-protocol instant messaging. There are however the odd things that put most users off a messenger such as this. People want full support for protocols, and by full support I don't mean cam and voice, I mean bug-free direct connections/file transfers/client server communications. It's a good idea, but it has a long, long way to go to be the best. Development is very slow at this stage.

This is the best IM client for Windows by far. The versions from the official site have never crashed for me. I love this thing, it's so configurable and unbloated. It's not like those other crappy programs such as GAIM or Trillian. It has a clean interface and tons of options, plus everything is done through plugins. So you only get the features you want and none of the fluff that other clients force on you. I see some people giving this program a low rating, simply because they don't know how to use it. That's a real shame, those people perhaps need to go take some computer courses.

PS. - It's funny how jtopping complains that he can't get the "stupid smileys" to work. Hilarious, because that's exactly what smileys are -- stupid. Also, nobody should need buddy icons.

apart from that I cannot see any major changes in contrast to the lastest nightly I had.

ive been using icq lite, and switched all my aim contacts to my icq list, but miranda doesnt seem to get them, so that means me losing all my aim contacts

Hey I just rediscovered Miranda and immediately threw trillian in the bin... this programme is great! There's so much you can customize! Not only do I use icq, irc and msn networks with it, I also make it check my pop3 mail addresses for new mails, I read rss feeds with it, it checks my computer time with an atomic server and lots more! Have I mentioned that it's free? And it loads very fast? A must-have for serious chatters!

This program is awesome! I have used many other clients, but have not found anything close to this. This program makes Trillian look like poo. The part that I love most about this program is its customization. You can customize it to fit your needs pretty much anyway possible. Keep the features coming!

Lean program that packs a punch for pure instant messaging. If you don't mind not having smiley icons and all that extra coloured backgrounds, then this will work just fine. Takes up only 880k on my machine.

I recently gave Miranda IM a try, and I was FULLY expecting it to be a complete turd like the others I've tried (yes, including Trillian). I was very surprised to find it stable, well-designed, compatible, and usable. The variety of plug-ins available is great; you can also change Miranda IM's look to suit your taste. I installed Miranda IM along with a weather plug-in (and a slew of other plug-ins), and dumped the crappy weather application I had been running, and eventually even uninstalled ICQ (which--believe me--was quite liberating). This is a real gem.

thousands of features and plugins (only if you wish to have them).
miranda IM is as fast as lighning and also very stable and bug-free.

The BEST IM on earth, by far...
I agree that the yahoo plugin sucks pretty much and should be reprogrammed. It hurts, but no other IM will give you so much with consuming so little resources, and have so many plugins, and is so customizable and so powerful.
7 stars if possible.

Well this is the first time I've seen Miranda on Beta News, what a pleasant surprise. :-) Of course, it goes without saying that Miranda is, bar none, the best Instant Messenger client available (on any OS). Low resource useage; intelligent, customizable implementaion of the Windows GUI (don't use Miranda if you absolutely require skinning, that's not what this client is about. Sure a skinning plugin exists, but it sort of goes against what Miranda's about philosophically); I don't think you can name a protocol that isn't supported, since pretty much all of them are (even the most obscure ones noone's ever heard of). It's Open Source. It's such a good client, people have tried more than once to steal its source and market it as their commercial product! Give it a spin, you'll love it's simplicity, power, wealth of features,flexibility, and frugal resource useage. (Incidently, a new alpha build with the latest changes is generated every 24 hours at http://miranda-icq.sourceforge.net/rich/ . I've been running nightlies exclusively for years on multiple machines with no problems. You might want to try that out if you want the absolute latest and greatest.)

Best IM available, the vast variety of plugins makes the application highly customizable and should be able to meet almost everyones needs. It also leaves a very small memory foot print in contrast to overbloated programs like ICQ, Trillian or AIM.

This proggie rules!!! Been using it for a month now, and i've no intention of going back to msn/icq/trillian. There is no other program that is more flexible and feature-full than Miranda IM. And perhaps all the other companies (say, Trillian) can learn a thing or two... ICQ did one good thing: online DB of contacts. Miranda is one of the very very few (if not the only one) that supports that. Booya.

I tried Miranda IM 0.2.1 and now I'm using a 0.3 alpha nightly. Small, fast, efficient and clean piece of work. Miranda works flawlessly behind my router and firewall. Both versions are simply EXCELLENT and the 0.3 alpha nightly build that I'm running is surprisingly stable. I have yet to find a single problem with it. 5/5 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Cute, clean, slim program that provides you with a no-hassle acces to the ICQ+MSN messaging system. Being behind firewalls and proxies gave no trouble at all.
Best choice. Compared to Trillian or Messenger and ICQ itself it can hardly do anything. But then, it doesn't pretend to.
