v52.0 is the shot in the arm this app needed. So much faster than 45.x series. Running the latest SQLite 3.17.0 version to reduce CPU usage, compiled by VS2015U3, gobs of bug fixes and performance improvements. Nothing will help you if your Inbox has 10 million messages though. You can't fix stupid.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v14.0 Beta 5 on Jul 12, 2012

This version (14) breaks some extensions that I rely on. Plus the changes actually make it less user-friendly and configurable than the 3.x versions released a while back.

Now that Mozilla has basically abandoned the product and also stop working on the Add-On / Extension sites for Thunderbird, many of the programmers who wrote those Add-On / Extensions have declared that they will no longer update their work, some in protest of the drop of resources devoted to Thunderbird. Some stopped updating their Add-On / Extensions about the time they did the rapid updates because every release required those programmers to update the things every time.

Thunderbird looks like it's going to be an abandoned product, which means I'm just going to stick with version 3.x and the Quote extension I use (Quote Color, etc)

Version 14 is a no go. I'm very let down by all of these issues.

psycros is absolutely correct, Thunderbird is going nowhere.

It seems as if development has stopped, but to pretend it's still alive Mozilla occasionally change a byte or two and a new version number attached.

Every time I try Thunderbird, I hope I can pension off my ancient Eudora 7 but alas Eudora keeps bouncing back every time.

Email clients haven't evolved an iota in the last decade, unfortunately.

psycros

psycros reviewed v13.0 Beta 1 on May 2, 2012

1997 called. They want their email client back.

Still no third pane for contacts. Still can't import addresses from CSVs or similar files to save its life. Still can't figure out that "categories" and "tags" are the same damn thing. STILL lacks most basic right-click functions that nearly every other client has included for a decade. Hell, the UI just caught up to clients from the Windows 98 era. TB's only strength is its server database that makes configuring most accounts a matter of putting in your address and password - why can't that sort of innovation be extended to the other aspects of the program?? If not for that nifty feature I'd rate it a 2..maybe even a 1 just to drive home the point.

Postbox is not free, Thunderbird is and I find the fact that they use open source code to create paid software is pretty lame.

As for Thunderbird, I don't see any real improvements through the huge jumps in numbering. It's still a cumbersome resource hog

krgood

krgood reviewed v10.0 Beta 4 on Jan 19, 2012

If you want an excellent mail client, use Postobx. It is based on the Mozilla client and works great. I have used them all and keep coming back to Postbox. It works, simple to use and set up and has all the bells needed...They have a trial and is inexpensive to purchase. I gave up on TB a long time ago...

Aegis69

Aegis69 reviewed v10.0 Beta 4 on Jan 19, 2012

Ok Its generally pretty good, they have made a lot of improvements to the search functions and the IMAP support is great now, but the contacts manager is from 2003, literally. The contacts manager looks like its tacked on and from another programming language, it barely works and it need improving far more badly than any of the other parts of Thunderbird.

I have a feeling its such a mess that no one wants to even touch it.

As I seem to be within the "intended user" group I have re-tried TB, it has been a few years since I last used it.
Well I am a little amazed, as we are on version 7 now, it is like a trip in nostalgia as it looks exactly the same as it always did. Whilst I appreciate that, hopefully, much has changed under the bonnet, the interface is still as ugly as it always was.
I still find Windows Live Mail desktop version to be much easier to use and better able to insert and manipulate photos into my mails. The same applies to other aspects of the client.
It seems that I was expecting more from TB than it actually delivers. I was probably fooled by the version numbering and the fact that it has been several years since I last used it.
Maybe for some people it meets their expectations but sadly for me it just seems tired and dated.

Very good email client. Not sure where the 3 rating is coming from. I dont use it mainly because I use the email client with Seamonkey. I'm sure most users use the webmail version of its isp's email. But if you can still use an email client software, this is the best. Allot better than the windows live software I tried a month ago. Man, what happen to old Outlook express..

Excellent. More stable than version 5 beta was.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v5.0 Beta 1 on Jun 3, 2011

You can tell it's a beta. It has some screen artifact issues (moving the mouse over all the text, etc cleans it up), lacks some IMAP folder functions (like being able to hide folders locally while leaving them still existing on the IMAP server), lacks some feedback options (such as detailed status when checking multiple accounts) and it's about 40% bigger than version 3.1

Still, it's promising. I'll test it on one machine but probably use 3.1 on all the others.

Thunderbird has gone through many improvements, but it is taking way too much resources which make it as chewing gum on my computers and they aren't very old, indexing many times make the email fetch to fail (even if it is disabled). I rate it a 2 until Mozilla starts to make it eat less resources. I am reverted back to the latest v 2 again !

You see, this is why I hate Mozilla products. All of the extensions I have for v3 do not work with this release!!

The products Mozilla release are ok (far from great though) but the constant breaking of useful extensions and massive memory consumption are deal breakers for me.

Sadly this is still the best email client available

The latest version of Thunderbird is much faster- processing seems to be faster, as well as the searches. I've been using Thunderbird for the last couple of years. Thunderbird needs tighter integration with calendar, tasks and reminders.

And now that there's a XOBNI clone for Thunderbird; I don't look at changing for quite some time. I've everything I need...

This is an excellent email client. It seems to have good filtering techniques and in general it just does the job for me. I can either show or hide content with a click of a button as one would expect from a professional mail client. I haven't checked resource usage as I have 3GB of RAM on an Intel Dual Core and in my case it is more than enough however I do have sympathy for the users with less powerful systems and I understand their complaints. I firmly believe developers should pay attention to these systems. To these users I would suggest you try some of the other open source clients (many of them are written in GTK I think). Simply search for open source email client and you will get a lot of results such as 5 good open source email clients etc.

TB used to be my preference but having found it to take an age to open each and every time, crash far too often and use resources at a rate that made me wonder if a crash of the OS was in progress until I realised that TB was always the culprit...long story short I switched to Claws Mail. TB has many extensions but far too many seem to have been abandoned by their developers and it's too buggy, too slow to start, too resource hungry...hardy a good choice these days. There are better clients available.

I guess the UI change is different and neat-o. I question what took so incredibly long just for the changes I am seeing.

I personally have less and less need for a program like this as newsgroups and e-mail management become less crucial to have locally stored....

Everytime this comes out with a new version either I cannot get use to it, or I do not like it. I have not decided.

I installed this and it took forever to respond, I had nothing but problems with it trying to configure it and when I uninstalled it after getting disgusted with it, it took forever to uninstall to the point I did not think it was going to for a while. I use window 7. Mozilla makes good stuff, but I hardly can say this is ready for big time yet. It needs work, so beware of it, it is a RC which is basically BETA so it is to be expected that error's etc will happen.

If your not wiling to fuss with this then do not install it, it is not ready for regular use in my estimation, it still needs work.

Nice performance increase in Beta 4, although it disregarded my existing layout.

Since Beta 3, it tends to not exit gracefully. It gets caught in a loop and maxes out the CPU until it is forced to terminate.

Wow! Postbox is the slickest email client with the best (zero-configuration) setup I've ever used. It's based on tbird so has extensions and plugins listed on their site. Cpu is kinda high but so was tbird. Except tbird never flew so smooth. Was just about to try this again cause I miss the html views but after trying postbox there's no doubt tbird can't hold a candle.

thunderbird (2) was my main mail client for a few years, but there was always something about that niggled me that left me feeling I was settling for something that wasn't brilliant just because it was free.

trying V3 beta 3, some things have changed, but really not a lot. The UI is still ugly as sin (llooks way better on OSX from the screenshots I've seen) but looks tired and old and grey in windows. Got multiple tabs - nice, but nothign much else that makes me want to return to using it.

Mostly I've switched over to Postbox for my offline mail or gmail for online, Postbox is based on Thunderbird but ti's everything that TB should have been 5 years+ ago.

It's free, so that's good, but there are 100s of free email clients that I think are as a good as TB.

skapig

skapig reviewed v3.0 Beta 1 on Dec 10, 2008

I much prefer using Thunderbird over Gmail. That being said, after the long wait for Thunderbird 3, I find it to be very disappointing.

+ New engine, so a slight bit faster.

+ GMail IMAP account profile which makes it a breeze to get connected to there (I have other accounts too).

- Completely pointless tabbing added to the main window. Could not find a way to hide the tab bar.

- Pointless buttons added in the message header area. Especially so if you have messages open in a new window. Buttons for the same functions exist right above the header.

+ Fixes a number of minor annoyances that users have reported, but these are only noticeable by very few.

Overall, there is nothing Earth-shattering though that wasn't the stated goal of the release. It's an architectural update with the few big frontend changes being the most annoying. It sounds like the team is relying on users to handle the innovation with addons.

@Ulmo

- You don't REALLY need multiple email accounts unless you're some kind of v-pimp. You can easily forward all other non-essential email accounts to a single Gmail account for easy management.

- Try using labels, they're really nice and they also show as 'folders' via IMAP. That's how I separate emails from work, voicemail and some online stores. Very easy to re-organize, you don't need to move emails at all.

- Privacy? There's no such thing, unless both parties use encryption. Gmail or not.

I still prefer using an email client myself and Thunderbird does a really good job. IMAP was a nice addition to Gmail, so now I can use both. I use Gmail when my browser is already open..

Excellent product, but the days of the desktop email app may be over as people enjoy the benefits of having centralized, web based email like gmail.

People don't have to know terms like IMAP or have to know to setup their SMTP settings in order to use gmail, and it can be securely accessed from any computer they might go on.

I use Thunderbird because of the power features, as a system admin I find it and its addons indispensable, but for average users this and Outlook are total overkill.

Tried it several times and I just don't like it at all.

Many useful options are missing and the whole profile vs account vs user business is a total mess as far as I am concerned.

I've gone back to using Outlook despite the fact that I am developing a real hatred for MS and their products.

I was expecting this to do for email what Firefox has done for browsers. Boy was I wrong.

The spell checker does work under XP64. Something that MS can't seem to do with Outlook Express, even with Office installed.

You do have to train the Checker in T Bird. I use versions 1.5 of F Fox and T Bird, have not been very impressed with the 2.0 releases.

There are some extensions available that make T Bird a little better.

It stores mail on the server so you can connect from multiple places to the same mailbox.

Sounds like this is what you want.

Does not have a remote mailbox manager, which for me is essential. I like to see the list of messages in the server before downloading them, and be able to delete them right at the server. I can do this with the Chinese client Foxmail, which I have used for years.

I've been using the alpha builds of this for over a month, seems like it just started to gain improvements over version 1 once it hit beta status. The 1 major improvement it has (only one I really notice) is that the automatic updates for extensions actually work now. Although, I've decided to drop this as my main mail reader and just use Gmail in my web browser now. And once Gmail opens up to all their users the ability to download mail from foreign email accounts, I will probably stop using this all together.

Is any room for improvements? Sure! Use less RAM, better antispam capabilities (I use this plugin: http://www.ibiblio.org/shadow/okopipi), minimize to tray, and in general some capabilities should be available out of the box (not plugins!).

Needs a lot of work with connections and processing with imaps..tends to always loose the connection and thus things can't be saved and you loose files, or you send things twice since you get no confirmation message or one that says connection to server lost. What irritates me is that loyal Thunderbird users like myself have been talking about this since the early days and its still on the list of things to be fixed. Unlike Firefox, the Thunderbird development model seems to be emphasizing functionality over bug fixes...sounds like some other company we all know...which is why I think firefox will go a lot further in beating up on big IW than TB will on Outlook..it might get Express one day but against Outlook 2003, it's a long hill.

Thunderbird is nice, and is my default email client due to the fact that it is the only email client that properly supports IMAP4. It has some nice functionality (such as builtin news reader, and the enigmail plugin is awesome), but could stand to be a lot better which is why it only gets a three. The spell checker is still very sub par (lack of punctuation support (dont and don't, etc)), lack of proper autocomplete in the to/from fields, lack of a built in calendar (which lightning should bring, hopefully), lack of a PROPER backup feature that doesnt require the end user to browse through a directory structure and find hidden folders to copy/paste somewhere else (THIS FUNCTIONALITY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN T-BIRD SINCE THE 1.0 RELEASE)) to name a few. This is a very good email client and shows a lot of promise, but as Banquo said 2 reviews down, comparing it to outlook is very much like comparing apples to oranges.

And, not to go on a rant about another product but I forsee this coming up in replies and other reviews, to those of you who bad mouth outlook for security, if you keep it patched (which the last time I had to patch was with office 2003 sp2) you are fine. I have never been hit by a single outlook vulnerability in my entire time using it (from office 95 to 2003). If you leave outlook unpatched and unupdated then you are asking to be hit by a vulnerability and exploit. Firefox was more boasted as far more secure than IE and we all saw how quickly that went down the tubes as exploit after exploit was found and brought the FF users back down to reality showing them their browser has holes like any other

Anyways, great job mozilla team, but until the client reaches at least 3.0, i dont think it will fully blossom into maturity or have its full potential.

Great stuff as always! One of the few programs I don't stumble over bugs in.

Metshrine, I'm curious what type of computer you have? The things you listed never happen to me, and are actually part of the reasons I like Thunderbird over crap Outlook.

>> I've never liked programs that take it upon themselves to install files and folders other than where I specify.

I second that! I wish there was a simple checkbox setting on FF to store all data in the default directory, and same for Thunderbird...though I have my email profile store most stuff elsewhere on a different HD. I dislike that about Azureus, and anything MS aswell.

Also, something interesting that's totally funky. IE's interface doesn't respond to me at all. I might click the search box at google.ca, and begin typing, and it selects a menu and picks "print". Then I cancel and click the search box and begin typing, and it selects a menu and picks "exit", or "internet options", or "Bookmarks"...etc.

Apparently I type at the exact sweet-spot speed that totally funkies up anything MS, which means getting IE/Outlook to type a word into a box usually takes several minutes. Funky, eh? Certainly destroys all productivity for me, so I avoid anything they create.

Isnt the point of a review to point out things that dont work? Thats why they post these betas here? So if you expect no one to complain and only post praise, that defeats the entire purpose of a review (which is also to post your opinion of a program). So please, dont tell people not to post negative comments, which I am about to do.

Thunderbird is a great email client, but at v1 and v1.5 beta, it lacks some serious functionality that should have been included from the start. Proper spell check, for one. I dont like the fact that it cant correct punctuated words (such as you're, wasn't, or isn't). I also dont like the email address recognition functionality that is used for the address book. When typing in an address, if it doesnt recognize it by the time I type in the first part, (and yes I've added a nickname) it adds MY DEFAULT domain.tld to the end of it. IE, if the primary email address used by t-bird is bingo@bingo.com and I want to send an email to bob@rocksit.com, I have a nickname for bob setup as just that, bob, and ALOT of the time, when i type in bob and hit enter, the program hasnt loaded its autocomplete cache to complete my address and it just adds BINGO.COM to the end of bob's address. Thunderbird should not assume that every email being sent, if it cant recognize it, is going to the same domain.tld as the sender.

As I said, thunderbird is a great program, and by 3.0 (what seems to be the normal maturation age for most OSS), we should see this fully blossom into a very very nice email client. I will continue to use this as my default client (as I have for the past 2 years), but it has a long way to go to catch up to many of the free/commercial clients available today. And by the way, the things I point out havent worked since 1.0, and continue not to work properly, so please dont blame this lack in functionality on it being a beta

To Kramy, your telling me spell check actually catches punctuation mistakes for you? Because I've never seen it work on any of my pc's or any of the pc's my co-workers and friends use. What type of PC I have? What exactly does that have to do with anything? It happens on VARIOUS configurations ranging from a dual xeon workstation to an athlon 1.3ghz to a p2 450. After reading your review, I see that you seem more and more like an anti-ms zealot. While I am not a MS fanatic, I do respect some of their products and try not to judge them sheerly on pure hatred. I type at 120WPM and see nothing like what you claim to experience. Typing something in an address bar selecting file print? Do you have your finger hovering the ALT or CTRL keys? That is the only way the print dialogs or exit option would be selected (unless you have a keyboard with built in shortcuts in it). Please dont bring IE into a thunderbird review, it has no place being that t-bird is an EMAIL client.

UPDATE - To sophist

These releases are not supposed to be posted here? This is beta news and the release above is a BETA, so please elaborate on why this shouldnt be posted here? As for the bug reports, I know that mozilla will likely never read these bugs here, which is why I submitted them back when .8 was released (and little has been done with them). Also, what good does it do to post it here? For the exact reason I just stated, this is a REVIEW site, and I am posting my REVIEW which has stuff I've noticed that is wrong with the program and have also reported to bugzilla and the official IRC support channel. So please, before you preach at me, dont assume Im some lamer who is just trying to flame a great product, I am trying to get more people to realize that there are issues and perhaps more people will submit the bugs I have found as well. Public awareness is the greatest motivator for a company to get a bug fixed.

I have no idea why anyone would give this a 5, except for the typical grading on a curve that free software gets.

I use and like Thunderbird, and it's pretty good for a 1.0 release. But it has a long way to go. There are still problems with mail database corruption. (You better compact your folders often.) There are still problems with RSS. And there are still interface issues.

I understand the whole concept of bare-bones extensible software, but I feel they take it a bit too far. For example, it's just plain stupid for the only notification options to be a sound, a static tray icon, and a popup that lasts for (literally) 4 seconds. If you're away when an email arrives, you have only that tiny, static tray icon to notify you of new mail. (Yes, I know about the extensions, like YIMB, that offer other notification options, but I've found them too buggy to use.)

Its amazing how people are so willing to show the world their total ignorance on any given topic.

For those who are not blind the release says that it is an "Alpha" release. Now for those of you that are totally clueless as to what an Alpha release is or have inane questions as to why an Alpha WOULD be released to the public (which just shows how little you understand software testing if you ask that question) SEARCH is your friend. One google search and I came up with many links one being;

http://www.sodabush.com/...docs/00,20020217,01.php

Thats a fairly simple explaination, hope you get it.

Now I use Outlook 2K3 at work until I got totally frustrated at its bloat. Thunderbird (pre-1 release) wasn't there yet for this environment so I'm using Outlook 2002 which is much less bloated and is OK.

At home I'm a happy user of Thunderbird and freepops to manage my 9 e-mail accounts.

People apparently have hard times reading this is an ALPHA release its not even beta yet so of course it is going to be buggy you run the risk of putting this software on your pc if you dont know anything about said software don't d/l if your not part of the solution you are just another problem uninstall the software keep your opinions to yourself and use whatever makes you comfortable and instead of saying "this is junk" explain WHY what needs to be fixed that is the purpose of alpha and beta releases they use the feedback you give them to fix the issues...
apparently people that like open source software hug trees as well...I have nothing personally against trees...they help out squirrels, give me paper, they are fun to climb and you can grow stuff too!
Kidding aside though just because something is free doesn't make it any worse then something you have to pay for (personally things you pay for seem to be worse and have more problems IMO) and one final note THIS IS ALPHA and should be treated as such it is not a FINAL release so there are still lots of things to be done

Thunderbird has one of the BEST IMAP implimentations I've ever seen. I use it for this sole reason alone. Microsoft Outlook's IMAP implimentation leaves alot to be desired. Once this version is finally released, I hope they finally have the multiple smtp servers (one per account) working, because one for every account is a bit of a pain to work with.

To the reviewer below, I hardly consider myself an open source tree hugger, but when an OSS product outperforms a commercial application, I will use it. Not because it is free, but because it functions better in the manners I need it to. I've been using this as my primary mail client for over a year at home, and I use Outlook at work. Honestly, I much prefer Thunderbird, although they could go a long way if they simplified the options a little bit, added support for multi-part binaries in usenet, and improved yEnc support (not that Outlook can compete, since it lacks any newsgroup support, and Outlook Express is a nightmare... at least you can recieve attachments in Thunderbird without being afraid of virus activity.)

With time, I have no doubt, Thunderbird will develop into the premier internet mail client - for a version 1.0 and considering the code base is far younger than anything even close to the level of quality.

ChadL

ChadL reviewed v1.0.1 Release Candidate on Mar 10, 2005

I will give it a 3/5

It is nice, there are a few problems that stop it from being my choice over Outlook:
1) It's Outgoing mail server selection is very limited, and I have a very complex setup becuase port 25 is bi-directonaly blocke on my connection.
2) It does not have an option to run in the System Tray, and I run it all the time, so this is important.
3) It does not handle rembering passwords very well... it really needs to bind them to my account settings rather then useing a password manager.

The spam filtering is nice, but I use Spamihilator that has all the features of Thunderbird's learning filter, and a number more features that make it more effective, so I don't use Thunderbirds spam filter anyway.

Metshrine

Metshrine reviewed v1.0 RC on Dec 3, 2004

I love this email client, with its great support for IMAP, I find it far far superior than outlook (FULL CLIENT). This client has just the right features for me, not bloated and very easy to configure. My ONLY complaints are these, the extension system needs to be standardized so that we dont have to constantly break plugins and themes with each upgrade, we need a way to add a seperate smtp server for each account, and we need an integrated system to backup all email and settings to a file like outlooks PAB, even if it zips them.

To those who complain about an archive install, i have no clue what yer talking about, the setup file on this link is just that, an installer. I have never seen anything else from thunderbird.

My email/news client of choice, but it's far from complete, as a newsreader it's pretty basic.

For now it fits my needs, but I hope they bring the newsreader capabilities upto that that of Outlook Express.

Some noteable newsreader features missing:

"Show Replies To My Messages", a feature Outlook Express has had since V4.

Killfile, there is no easy way to killfile someone.

Sweet program. One curious and annoying problem: I couldn't find a way to change the stored password for an account. I had to delete and recreate the account with the correct password. As for some unknown reason, I changed the password in the server and thunderbird never asked me to type it again, just sit there and don't download the mail. Develpers, please is just one additional field to add to the account settings. Having no access at all to the firefox password manager is NOT cool. the logical place to do it is in account settings//server settings
Another cool setting to implement is access to the settings as in firefox typing about:config somewhere.
Thanks!
For the people having trouble upgrading: I had problems in the first time startup of thunderbird because I just overwrite 0.9 version with 1.0rc files. You'll need to wipe the program folder and only then copy the new files. As your profile is stored in the "documents and settings" folder, you'll not going to loose a single byte of your mails/contacts/etc deleting the *program folder* (usually "\program files\mozilla thunderbird")

I find that Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client are very useful. Both are much faster in performance then the Microsoft alternatives. I found that Thunderbird has the best antispam technology of anything I've tested thus far. I do not have to mark each junk mail piece as junk mail like I did with Norton Antispam. Thunderbird is an intelligent program which learns what is spam and what isn't making my time more productive! I highly recommend it and with all the added extensions and themes you can customize it the way you want! That is something Microsoft has a hard time beating.

Even though email is ironically one of the most unreliable forms of communication devised — Did you get my email? Did the attachment come through? Did it render the HTML readable? etc., — I've got GMail now and that's more than enough and offers a variety of options a standalone client like Outlook or T-Bird can't hope to include. I used Thunderbird through versions 7 & 8, but it was persistently unreliable and took forever to open. There's nothing wrong with Open Source, and everything right with its philosophy. I just want the best software, whomever builds it. But since I try to do as little email correspondence as possible, FoxMail is still the freeware king for speed and dependability.

I don't want to be too critical of this software, because it's worthy, well-intentioned and put together by idealistic volunteers and in time it may well develop into a good client. Right now, sadly, it's completely unreliable. It handles IMAP badly. It takes ages to load and it crashes too easily. Worst of all, on more than one occasion it's lost emails somewhere between server and inbox.

Outlook, Eudora, TheBat and Mulberry are all much better clients, more reliable and just better to use. For now...

Thunderbird, along with Firefox, are far superior to Microsoft offerings (IE and OE), incorporating many new usability features while MS has remained stagnant (and insecure). Thunderbird is also far superior to that bloated corpse Outlook whose performance is easily an order of magnitude worse and TB doesn't choke on large quantities of mail store either. Outlook is very usable, but suffers from extreme speed problems when accessing large mail stores. Thunderbird handles large amounts of data with quickness and reliability and isn't bloated down with features only 5% of users will ever try.

For pre-release versions, these are stable, working programs with clean, simple, but powerful UI's and a capacity for user-built extensions that will continuously keep these tools on the leading edge of power and usability.

The only significant feature it currently lacks is the ability to archive.

Three cheers for the Mozilla team! Long live Open Source!

While Thunderbird's feature set doesn't match that of PocoMail or Eudora, its stability, speed, ease-of-setup, and reliability is as good or better than FoxMail. With a host of plugins, Thunderbird does even more. Moreover, it now renders html text perfectly unlike before. Thunderbird is now mature enough to be my everyday email client, and I'm glad.

I can't seem to buy into all the hype about Thunderbird. Sure, it's open source. Sure, it's free. Yes, it's better than the predominant standalone e-mail clients such as Outlook Express and even Outlook 2003 (if you're not interested in other features such as tasks, calendar, etc.). And it supports sending HTML-formatted e-mail. Those are good things.

And now the downside: it offers nothing revolutionary. It is a standard, run-of-the-mill, folder based e-mail client. Out of the box (I am not very familiar with Thunderbird extensions so many of these features may be available as add-ons), my favorite e-mail client is M2, included in Opera. It handles e-mail, newsgroups, and newsfeeds (RSS) in one easy-to-use interface. In addition, it disposes of the complicated folder interface for a more easy customizable interface based on views (which are determined by message attributes). It automatically filters out mailing lists (such as Yahoo Groups). You can also sort messages by label (important, todo, mail back, etc.), type of attachment (document, image, etc.), contact (based on contacts in your address book), and search terms. You can also keep track of active contacts (those you have recently sent e-mail to) and active threads (messages you have replied to). For a complete review of M2 (and Opera) that I wrote a few weeks back, go to http://bhinc.home.comcas...opera-75-excels_30.html. The only drawback: you can't send HTML-formatted e-mail (only plaintext) although you can read such messages.

Sorry to promote M2 so much but I just can't understand all of the attention that Thunderbird gets. What's so special about it?

Dreimanis, this is what beta software means... Do not use it as your everyday software unless you're prepared to have problems and have a good backup of your data. Tagged 0.7 means for Thunderbird being months away from completion (and being bug free), it's impressive that in its infancy so many people use it as thair default client (I do since 0.5) but it should not let anyone forget that it is still beta software.

On a sidenote, for us who were used to eudora (or OE for that matter) global inbox for several accounts and who always missed that feature in TB : it is now implemented in the test builds and should made its official debuts as a optional feature of 0.8

The secure IMAP feature was okay in 0.4, and then it was broken in 0.5 and now is fixed again in 0.6
I kind like its new spam control, but it has a lot of false positive for me.

The tray icon feature is not available but I guess that's because Mozilla is native in Linux, and when developers port thunderbird to Win32, they could be careless about the tray icon. There are 3rd party plug-in to eable the tray icon feature though.

I am glad that in this build, they finall give users the options to remove the message preview pane. It is the worst feature ever introduced in Outlook Express or Outlook because of the threats from web bugs when you open up junkie mails. Outlook Express gave you the option to remove the message previow.. and Thunderbird was stubborn enough to wait until this build to enable this feature.

Well, keep improving! Maybe one day I will change my mind.

I don’t think I could ask for more. I used to be a FoxMail user, but now I’ll never look back. To everyone that has contributed to this project, VERY NICE WORK!!!

Thunderriver reviewed v0.5 on Feb 9, 2004

I never figured out why ThunderBird doesn't allow you to disable the preview panel. People are suggesting me to pull down the preview panel to the very bottom. Well, while you can't see an email is being previewed, your system is actually previewing it anyway!

They should improve more on the management with remote images download in emails and so on.

In build 0.4, secure IMAP authentication failed miserablly. In 0.3 it was working. In 0.5, I believe it is fixed, but I need to test it some more to confirm it.

XF reviewed v0.5 on Feb 9, 2004

Ok! I've been testing and using Thunderbird from the 0.2 days and now this 0.5 release is the best 'til now. For my personal daily use I couldn't find any serious bug that would make this a beta product... but still it is so major changes might still come in the future. I hope not, since it's very nice at it's actual state...

This is a perfect companion for Firefox (Firebird) browser. The builtin antispam filter works great.

Really the best email client, the only minus is that is a bit slow (or two bits) on older (read older processors) computers.

Great client with great options. If the calendar plugin worked I would be in heaven.

The RC1 of 0.4 broke my copy, but after the final came out it's been great!
Also, I love using the nightly, cause they are great. I do wish the memory footprint was smaller, but all great things come in time (still smaller than OE or Outlook!!) :-)

Thunderbird in this version is truly awesome, and a pleasure to use.

Let's wait until 0.5 now :]

Go Thunderbird ! Five stars all the way.

mmebane

mmebane reviewed v0.4 on Dec 6, 2003

5 stars really isn't a high enough rating for this program... there should be a 6: "Totally Awesome". It is truly that good. Yeah, it's still beta, and a bit buggy, but it is so much nicer looking and feeling than Mozilla 1.5. It goes without saying that it leaves LookOut Express in the dust.

I cannot emphasize this enough: If you are still using IE, Outlook Express, or any techs based on them (such as MyIE2), stop NOW! Do the world a favor, switch to Mozilla products, or Opera, or something else non-IE.

TrueSatan

TrueSatan reviewed v0.4 on Dec 6, 2003

Excellent and certainly my default client. Extensions and themes are without problems in the latest version. BTW anything running on another browsers engine ISN'T a client it's just a skin with attitude. If you want to get away from the vulnerabilities that plague any software that uses a part of or the whole of Internet Explorer or Outlook (outlook Express=Look Out Spam Express LOL) then Mozilla offerings are as good as you will find.

FailedCRC

FailedCRC reviewed v0.4 on Dec 6, 2003

truly excellent client (even looks "pretty" if you like that sort of thing). The ability to bounce messages would be a nice feature, nevertheless, I use this alongside mulberry (which is truly the daddy of all mail clients) :)

finalcut

indigital: myie2 IS a client. It just uses the ie engine
so, faster and more complient. So many sites only allow ie...

indigital

indigital reviewed v0.3 on Oct 15, 2003

The new version of Thunderbird emphasizes that the project is on a very promising way to become a competitor to Outlook and Outlook Express, to name a few.
Light and modular as it is it furthermore comes in an installation free version.

@finalcut: MyIE isn't a client, it is just an extension for the monstrous Internet Explorer

I've yet to get themes to work properly though :/

Surge

Surge reviewed v0.2 on Sep 4, 2003

In mid-june I've switched from Mozilla Mail to Mozilla Thunderbird. Though a child of the same parents Thunderbird was fast and beautiful. It has the most needed features and is as stable as the rest of the Mozilla branded products.

Mark Gillespie

Mark Gillespie reviewed v0.1 on Jul 29, 2003

Nice mail client, using it as my default Win32 client for mail/news. It has some major quirks still (same as Mozilla/Netscape mail has always had), but it's stable, and better than most other clients out there.

I'm hoping that the developers now start thinking outside the Netscape box and start implementing things that people want, that would REALLY make this a 5* client.

PS. I switch off the Junk mail controls, and use POPFile instead, it's much better...

loosegroove

loosegroove reviewed v0.1 on Jul 28, 2003

A 0.1 release and already better than most of the email clients available. I can't wait to view the progress this client makes in the near future.
It's my new day-to-day email client.

rwabel

rwabel reviewed v0.1 on Jul 28, 2003

I like it too. I really love the IMAP implementaiton. There are still some little things I don't like. It's a very slow in comparision with other mail clients. I hope they'll improve that during the next time. And I would also like to see the feature for POP3 to delete mails on the server after x days. so far it's only possible to delete mails on server when they're deleted or moved from the inbox. so please add that feature too!!

HolyLiaison

HolyLiaison reviewed v0.1 on Jul 28, 2003

I like what they're doing. Splitting up the mail/web clients in to seperate programs. Saves time for people that need one or the other. As always this is another quality release from Mozilla.

summa_sonnen

summa_sonnen reviewed v0.1 on Jul 28, 2003

This is a wonderful email client. I'm using this from the alpha version. It should have been named version 1 instead of 0.1. It has tons of features including the new 3 panes window (like Outlook 2003/2004 version) and a good junk mail filter. You can modify the toolbar. You can use themes (themes for the new version is due). Lot more features available as extensions.

borggraefe

borggraefe reviewed v0.1 on Jul 28, 2003

This is an excellent mail client! It's already very stable und useable because it's based on matured Mozilla technology.
