Mp3tag can rename files based on the tag information, replace characters or words from tags and filenames, import/export tag information, create playlists, and more. It supports online freedb database lookups for selected files, allowing you to automatically gather proper tag information for select files or CDs.

I have tried ALL of the alternative software (close to 73 different software) and I have concluded that this is the best MP3 tagger in EXISTENCE.
It does literally everything you could possibly want.
It is the gold-standard of all mp3 taggers for which others shall be measured.
Above all that, it's free. Unreal.
Bravo. Well done.

To me MP3Tag is the answer. It's clear and simple - and yet has advanced features that makes working with any number of files at a time easy. Keep it that way, Florian, please! :)
Reviewing 2.47a (Nov 22, 2010)
Love this software with one caveat:
Managing user-defined strings for the various file tagging and renaming drop boxes (specifically deleting unwanted strings) desperately needs work. Deleting those strings one at a time is completely unacceptable, especially since they don't necessarily stay deleted.
Other than that, this is perfection.
FOUR stars for an utterly indspensible member of my music management toolkit and extreme kudos to the author.

This is a good tagging app, and usually I would rate 5*. However, the changes in this beta release disappoint me; changing the meaning of TPE2 from BAND/ORCHESTRA to be ALBUMARTIST is definitely a change for the worse for me :-(
It's throwing flexibility out of the window for dumbing down to iTunes level of sophistication. It's the beginning of the end.

Well that's why nature produced variety. I've tried TagScanner, and I don't find it more "comfortable to use" at all; quite the opposite. I hate TagScanner's interface, and it lacks some of Mp3tag's features.

Mp3Tag is a life saver, since every download business uses a different tagging style. Never had a problem with this excellent software.
Reviewing 2.46c Beta (Sep 27, 2010)
I removed Mp3tag recently after becoming incredibly frustrated with its inability to update tags correctly. I'd keep pointing it to cover art, or using its built-in Amazon search facility, and it wouldn't save it to my MP3 files. As a matter of fact, it wasn't saving any tag changes I was making.
No errors, just a silent, mysterious inability to perform its core function. (It wasn't a NTFS permissions or read-only issue.)
I tried TagScanner but that thing has a crap interface and doesn't have the cover art search feature I appreciate.
Oh well.

Reviewing 2.46 (Mar 17, 2010)
AlbumArtDownloader is the best for covers bar none.
I have an album in flac that tagscanner reads perfect and this shows no tags at all. Really about all it's good for is the extended tags. And it's not portable at all, which tagscanner is. It is, but it MUST be able to right to the apdata folder. Like to give it a 4 but it's gui just can't compare either to tagscanner's.

Reviewing 2.45a (Dec 1, 2009)
Amazing tagging software, makes organizing a collection sooo much easier. Especially if you go to the forums and get or update the scripts people write for it. You still have to tweak things your own way, but at least it's not as unfriendly as foobar2000!. I'd also highly recommend Album Art Downloader (for grabbing covers), Mixmeister BPM analyzer if you want BPMs tagged, and the lyricsplugin ( http://www.hydrogenaudio...dex.php?showtopic=62821) for getting lyrics in foobar2000 (I think the lyricswiki part is broken; also remember to set the lyrics to store in the UNSYNCEDLYRICS field for compatibility). I also use foobar2000 for setting replaygain in tags.
Reviewing 2.44e Beta (Oct 23, 2009)
Still good. The fixes are minor at best, nothing that affects me personally. Still one of the best tagging programs out there.

Reviewing 2.44 (Aug 17, 2009)
The addition of the cover only download is good. It doesn't help much for smaller indie bands sch as "Low of the Low" or "Venomin James." For those who listen to Britney Spears though will be quite pleased.
In other news, I told Mm about the slob of a brother. You should have seen the welts on his ass. She beat him up much worse then the time Hulk Hogan went up against that 500lb Panda Bear for the WWF/WWE Unified heavyweight belt where the winner got the belt and the right to use their likeness in the "Save the HGH" campaign.

I could kiss the man who wrote this beautiful piece of art. Seriously, it is that good at what it does.
It works. It works so well, i've been re-tagging and sorting 30+gb of data, nearly nonstop without a single hitch or hiccup. It does not crash.
It does what it does very, very well.
The ability to add external programs makes this one of the most powerful programs i've seen yet to tame your collection of legally owned mp3s.
It's very easy to use, although I wish I could find a good guide on how to add external programs/tools. Sweet!
I've also found that if you are having a tough time finding matches, as a last ditch effort try FreeDB/web search. Once that straightens out your files you can try it again with amazon or discogs.
That's worked more than a few times for me.
Reviewing 2.42c Beta (Jan 5, 2009)
Simply the best tool for masstagging large collections of audio files (not just mp3!). I set up several "Actions" and with the click of a button, all those actions are performed at once on any number of files. The feature set is far beyond any in-player tag editor. I even prefer it to foobar2000's masstagger. Frequently updated with new features and fixes as well. Couldn't ask for more.

However, dont down rate a software because you are too much of a poofter to upgrade after 9 years.

Powerful tagger tool. With features like autonumbering, cover art importing, tagging based of file name, renaming tool, plus the script support with which i used both the Amazon & Walmart cover art scripts, this is a solid and great tool. There are only 3 things i would wish it would support for the future: Chiptunes (SPC, NSF, PSF, etc); Lyrics (only sees the tag, can't view/edit); mp3gain support (only sees the tag, can't do anything with it) Thats the only 'Limited' functionality i see. Would also be nice to see a full Linux port instead of using WINE.
EAVES: Mp3tag WILL work in 2000. The installer rejects 2K but if you can copy the install folder from an XP User, or a Linux user running WINE, to your 2K machine you're good to go.
Reviewing 2.41a Beta (Jul 9, 2008)
It's a great, simple to use, always updated and reliable mp3 tagger. It even made me change from a shareware I was using some years ago.
Note that even Microsoft has a time frame to support an operation system. You can't blame the author to stop supporting a 8 years old OS. In fact is the lack of the OS updates that turns most recent programs incompatible.

Ridiculously awesome, it's both simple and customizable. I'm very glad I tried it. Just started using the last.fm source from the forums, now I don't have to think about what to put for genre in the tags anymore, I used to just leave it blank. But blank isn't so useful when using a portable mp3 player. The discogs sources you can get in the forum seem good too. I wish I'd had all this functionality in a package this simple years ago. I wish it had some of my favorite features from MP3-Info Extension too, like adding mp3 icons for windows, but that may be overreaching a bit.

@kashin- I'd suggest NOT loading 1000s of selections. What's the point?
Do an album at a time.
Works perfectly for me, including getting tag data from AMG.
Reviewing 2.39 (Aug 7, 2007)
It works and the price is right, but it gets sluggish if you load thousands of songs into it. The RAM usage also goes through the roof. It uses ~80MB of memory with 9,500 songs loaded. Surely the tags don't take up a fraction of this much space. Another problem is that the program rescans every file when I load it. It should be able to cache the tag information and rescan only changed files since last restart. When I pull tags from FreeDB or Amazon, it's very slow to add the tags to the files. An album with 20 tracks can take up to 30 seconds or more to tag. This can get very annoying when you're trying to get tags for many albums. Still, I use this program because I haven't found anything better yet. I'm open for suggestions though.
Reviewing 2.38 (May 22, 2007)
The best freeware digital audio tagging application with a few cards more in its sleeve. Mp3tag excels at really fast tagging, continued development and care from the author, support for all digital audio formats and an easy and practical interface. i use it to get album art and clean mp3 files with extra tag specs, conversion to 2.3 unicode from 2.4,all with a simple "erase tags, undo" command. It works reliably with a very big collection of files.
Very highly recommended.

I'm happy for meeting mp3tag.
Reviewing 2.37e Beta (Feb 16, 2007)
I've written before, and doubtless will again, that this is simply the best program of its type.
It's smaller and has a cleaner interface than either of the two alternatives mentioned in recent reviews here.
Not to intentionally tear-down other people's choices, to which they certainly have their rights, but one really can't compare this program to Mp3/Tag Studio, because:
Mp3/Tag Studio isn't just a tagger, it includes cutting and joining functions of the kind done so well for free by MP3DirectCut.
Mp3/Tag Studio is only designed to work with MP3 files and only with ID3 tags. If, like me, you have other many other file types (Ogg, Musepack, AAC/MP4, or ANY lossless formats), then you'll probably want a tagger that handles them all, which Mp3tag does and Mp3/Tag Studio does not.
As a final consideration, remember that Mp3tag is freeware. Mp3/Tag Studio is either adware or $19 shareware, depending upon which download you choose.
All these points converge to make Mp3tag the clear winner. To any who've never used it, please do try it, odds are your search for a tagger will then be at a very happy end.
Reviewing 2.37e Beta (Feb 16, 2007)

Reviewing 2.37a (Nov 6, 2006)
Simply the best program of its kind.
ID3-TagIt isn't really even the same sort of program, since it is designed to work ONLY with ID3 tags.
For those of us who have files in our collections that can/must use other tag formats (Vorbis, AAC, MusePack, Speex, and several lossless formats, for example), Mp3 tag can deal with All these AND ID3, up to and including v. 2.4 unicode.

meteecee, I used to use ID3Tag-it but mp3tag is the best tool of it's kind. It's very extensible and intuative compared to most others (and that inclused tag&rename and godfather too!).
Very useful feature I have been using it for lately was to remove all unwanted fields from all my music files at once, and also removing unwanted tag types (lyrics3, ape, etc.) so I am just left with what I actually use.

My only complaint about MP3Tag was that it was too slow to read and modify OGG files (I don't know about MP3's), but that seems to have been fixed in recent releases. This app makes it really easy to modify tags one at a time or in groups. One of the most useful apps I have.
Reviewing 2.36d Beta (Jul 8, 2006)
Great Tagger. Used to use TagScanner but I found the interface and setup of Mp3Tag to be much more efficient. A tool should have functionallity with an interface that compliments that. Though I really wonder what Anomonly is looking for in a tagging program. Something that works or something catches his eye so he can't realize how much his current program sucks.
Great Program!!!

I highly recommend this program for any tag or file renaming. It's even far better than iTunes! It's faster, has track number wizard & makes a messy collection of thousands of files reconfigured in at least half the time you would spend with the best 2nd choice MP3tag soft/freeware.

The devoted tagger's best friend. By the way, I've found it's also excellent for creating and editing playlists.
Reviewing 2.35 (Jan 8, 2006)
After using this program for only a few minutes, I knew it was the best in its class. I've tried many others, but very few make it as easy or simplistic to edit a whole album's mp3 tags. The freedb search is great, although they could add a back button to the confirmation dialog in case the result you selected didnt match your tastes. Also, add a freedb listing to the right click menu so you can right click your list of files and choose freedb. Other than that, top notch. Good job!

I really wish I could give this 4.5, but I don't think it deserves 5. I've been using this utility for over a year now. It's a great little program and above all it's free, but I would think after how long it's been around, some of the more obvious bugs would have long ago been resolved. It seems as though the rapid fire release schedule this has been on lately reintroduces bugs sometimes. When I read the change log I just can't believe some of the showstoppers that were fixed in relation to how long the program has been available. But as I stated earlier, it is a fantastic program and I'm incredibly greatful that the author does have the desire to further develop it.
Reviewing 2.34e (Dec 17, 2005)
It's hardly fair to blame FreeDb server problems on an application that just uses FreeDb.
This is the best tagging app. available. The two most frequent complaints against it, at least among those here, seem to've been lack of unicode support and lack of Amazon support for gathering tag info.
Both those things have now been added, so I hope it'll be happily used by even more people.
As I've said before, If you actually want your tagger to also serve as an organizer, encoder, and converter, then yes, you should try The Godfather.
But, if you, like me, want your tagger to just be a great tagger, I doubt you'll find one better than this.

The Godfather is a nice application for those who want/need their audio file tagger to also serve as an organizer/catalog, and an encoder/decoder/ transcoder.
For those who DON'T want their tagger doing all that, like me, Mp3tag is a much better choice.
It also supports WMA for those who use it; I never will, but the support is there, and unicode, which is very important given the advent of the unicode-only version of foobar2000.

Florian has done a superb job with this utility. As with many such things, the English language bits are a little bit weak here and there, but I could not possibly complain about it. Producing multiple language interfaces and help is not as easy as it might look. To do it for a FREE piece of software is highly commendable.
The software itself is stable and works well, is easy to use, and does what it claims to. Nice work.
Reviewing 2.32u Beta (Oct 10, 2005)
I'd have to agree. This is an excellent free tool. If this was a $20 program, it's still 4 *s. Some language cleanup and interface improvements would add polish, but as a utility, this thing whomps! Never change tags individually again - there's no reason to!

Because we westerners can write documents solely using 8 bits encoding (e.g. ISO-8859) does not mean that every one in the world can do so. In fact, Unicode has been created to match worldwide (i.e. multi-cultural) requirements.
Thus, the fact that the guy below is disappointed because Unicode is not supported (e.g. Chinese) is indeed a completely valid reason to take points out the rating. Moreover, a 3 is an average rating. If I was in his/her shoes, since the program would fail on all counts, I'd have given it less.
Since it does meet my expectations though, I do rate it a 5 personally.

Is there a way to actually do this?

Mp3tag has support for AMG, artistdirect.com, discogs.com and musicbrainz.org via the Web Source Framework and it's easy to build a custom web source for amazon.com. Just suggest this on the forums and someone will do that.
There is also an external tool called Amazon Cover Downloader which can also be found at the forums.

Though it’s free it’s not for me, as it doesn’t import information from Amazon. Just got done organizing my music and this makes proper tagging really fast, It does alittle bit more than just tag, if you rename files you have to remake the playlist, and this program will make playlists for you. And if your mp3's are in a proper name format then the filename > tag feature is really good. Although I like to do each mp3 manually myself, to ensure title and track# is right.
If you want to give your mp3's proper tags this program is the best and fastest way to do so.

Just tried it out and prefer it over all over tools I've used so far. It GUI is clean and fast and it does the job very quick if you have spend the first minutes trying to figure things out. And why the hell does one need Amazon? - FreeDB does it all!
Reviewing 2.27a (Dec 11, 2004)
Isn't that the point of a rating system? To rate software to your preferences? And isn't "fast and streamlined" your personal preference?
I'm not asking for a pile of bloat, I just really like the convenience of getting all the album info from Amazon and having all the tags filled out automatically. If you think typing them out manually is "fast and streamlined" then more power to you.
Until this feature is added, my rating stands.

Man, I can't get over the silliness of some of these reviews. Amazon Support? Beefs with the fact that it uses an installer? People, give your heads a shake! This is a MP3 and file *tagger*. You want a multimedia library application? Use Winamp, MusicMatch, the iTunes crap or some other example of bloat. Pound for pound, this applications kicks serious butt in terms of functionality against all comers. It's bug free too which is more than the vast majority of the others (especially the bloatware junk) can claim.
If you don't like streamlined, tightly written apps that do their job superlatively, that's your wont (and loss) but don't dis an app that does because of your own "preferences".
Reviewing 2.26f Beta (Nov 30, 2004)
Why do all the positive reviews sound like tag-lines from a website?
Anyway, I like this program but until it adds Amazon support (like Tag&Rename) I won't be using it.
Very solid but lacking some important features.
Reviewing 2.26f Beta (Nov 30, 2004)
@rrtn: The only thing thats lame is your poor review.
Mp3Tag is certainly more comfortable and powerfull than the most small standalone apps. Ok, you can write texts with the notepad but if want more you will use a office suite ( For example OOo ;).
And Mp3Tag is not bloated its nearly almighty in its job. The strong script functions for example are saving my live over and over again. Also this app eats every Format without any problems.
So this is a must have for audio file tagging.
Reviewing 2.26a (Nov 16, 2004)
Sweet! But I still miss the cover download feature as TGF has.
Reviewing 2.26 (Nov 1, 2004)
With every release, more inherently *useful* features get added without glitz and bloat. I won't use anything else.
Reviewing 2.25o Beta (Oct 31, 2004)
I found MP3tag to be a very easy and fast solution for tagging my music. It's a simple, stable, no-nonsense tagger that does what it sais. I do agree that MP3tag is not suited for people who want very detailed tags (cover,producer,...) but for basic tagging it's just the best and it's free!
*Highly recommended*
Reviewing 2.25g Beta (Oct 1, 2004)
very good. only thing it's missing is the ability to set encoder flags (copyrighted, original, and emphasis). however it looks like it won't ever be added: http://www.anytag.de/for...index.php?showtopic=763 . unfortunate because mp3 tag studio can do it fast and easily. i'm torn between the two now.
Reviewing 2.25d Beta (Sep 24, 2004)
I've been tagging entire albums in record time with this app. The interface is intuitive, the features are perfect, and the coding is very smart (the way it can parse filenames for tag items). Keep up the excellent work!
Reviewing 2.25 (Sep 19, 2004)
Thou SHALT NOT use taggers built into players or other shareware code that is overpriced and underpowered. Thou SHALT use this.
The configurability of the tagging masks alone is worth the download.
Reviewing 2.24m Beta (Sep 15, 2004)
Amazing piece of software that allowed me to update all the file names based on the artist and song name and performed it in a few seconds. Does everything I need to manage my ever growing list of music and allows me to update file names or id tags very quickly if I decide to change my naming format. Small, clean and easy to use interface.
Reviewing 2.24m Beta (Sep 13, 2004)
a very handly program to have. 5 stars!!!
although the only reason you would really need this is if you wanted to fix up your illegally donwloaded music files.

OMG! What a relief program such as these exist!
Before i used winamp to rename my albums, can you imagine?
This program is so easy to use and in under 1min. you have tagged & renamed an album the way you want it!
A real relief!
Great work guys!
Reviewing 2.24b (Sep 3, 2004)
It's small, fast, multi-format, actively developed, and free. Only the lack of ability to import data from All Music Guide keeps it from perfection.
Reviewing 2.24b (Sep 2, 2004)
Love this app!
Used Tag & Rename till I found this one. Only feature I miss is automatic cover download.
Reviewing 2.22 (Jul 4, 2004)
It offers more features and costs less (it's free) than all the commercial/shareware alternatives out there. Was a real life saver when I bought my Creative Nomad, allowed me to quickly and easily clean up my tags before transfering them to the portable player.
However has a few minor quirks, like the mouse pointer freezing while it's writing the edited tags to some files. First time I see a program exhibiting that behaviour under WinXP...

Ozieo: thank you for the advertisement for this shareware software you are talking about. I had a look and was thoroughly unimpressed (apart from the price tag maybe, as well as the kick a** huge banner at the bottom wasting screen space). I was wondering why you were not justifying your opinion and your drastic Mp3Tag underating with valid points, and discovered why: there aren't any.
I have to say that I tried The Godfather also, and it's good too, and free :) However, I had the impression it's trying to do too much things apart from tagging, and that made it difficult for me to make use of it in an efficient way.
I myself use Tag&Rename because it does a lot and the interface is somewhat effective. The other main reason I use Tag&Rename is the possibility to import tags form www.allmusic.com. I'll rate Tag&Rename with 4 * since it's shareware. For some reason, I'm more comfortable with AMG than with freedb, probably because I get more data, hence allwoing me to make sure I'm definitely getting the right data. That might sound dumb, but that the way my brain works :S
That said, as soon as Mp3Tag allows to import tags from www.allmusic.com, then it will get a definite 5 and replace Tag&Rename on my system :) I can't wait since Tag&Rename is shareware, and you get free updates for the main revision number only.

I used to use MP3 Tag Studio. It is deifnitely not without merit - in fact it is an excellent program. However, why should I pay for something when I can get the same functionality for free? "Mr. 10 million times better" or whatever he said needs to grow up - he simply cannot substantiate his claim.
Reviewing 2.12a (May 16, 2004)
The best free mp3, ogg, aac, ... manager and renamer! It has a very simple interface, with its single window mode. The rename window allows you to rename all tags by double clicking on it, to display a lot of informations about the files. It scans folders fast, has an addon launcher for faster startup. It's translated in many languages, has shell integration, freedb support. It's really an excellent program.

Very happy with this program BUT where is the "enable leading zeros in track numbers" option? It USED to be there but now is gone...
Reviewing 2.16f (Jan 10, 2004)
I'd been using MP3BookHelper for quite a while, but I switched to this because the 2.16 final version supports Speex files, which I use extensively for audiobooks, as well as most popular music file types.
That and the fact it's freeware and only 1.35 MB installed make it my new favorite tagger.
Reviewing 2.16f (Jan 4, 2004)
This app crushs UltraTagger, it hasn't done me wrong once yet, UltraTagger messed up several albums on me before I set out to find an alternative. Thanks for all the great work, keep it up!!

very good, but i still prefer case's tag (ca5e.tk) with one of the available frontends or foobar2000.

This program is simply fantastic. And even more because it is freeware.

It does everything I want, stable even when tagging 1000s of files, brilliant program.
Reviewing 2.15 (Oct 27, 2003)
Absolutely terrific program - superior to MPTagger which was my former mainstay (I'm sorry but no development and bug fixes in over a year means an automatic "bye bye" as far as I'm concerned). I have only one beef: why is the context help not in English yet?
Reviewing 2.14l (Oct 24, 2003)
I've observed this program for a while because I daily work with Mp3ext to editing Tags. Now I've tried out Mp3Tag and I believe I will change my preference to this program.
- I love the interface to my local cddb,
- I believe, it's very stable
- through its overview I can very easily manage all my MP3's in one step.
And the costs ....
