Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Mar 13, 2008)
its a shame that this browser has been discontinued
v9.0.0.6 is a major, MAJOR improvement over v7 which is the last version i used
they have also improved the theme over the firefox one a great deal
im using this until it becomes too old to use
Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Mar 9, 2008)
Its still good I am downloading it so one day I can show my kids. To bad AOL bought it and destroyed it and now has killed it. Oh well you can still get Mozilla the orignal Netscape.
Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Feb 25, 2008)
Now i know its dead. This latest update puts this annoying message every once in awhile mentioning the end of the line and whether to update to firefox or not. That alone is enough for me to give this version its death bed. Luckily the version that was released a month ago i still have and I'm using that one.
Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Feb 24, 2008)
downloaded and installed this latest update, still love it
i wish they were not killing it off though because Netscape 9 is a major improvement
@Scary Guy you are stupid, rating a product 1 which you didn't even install.
Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Feb 22, 2008)
I think the rating actually went up because it died. I saw this today and thought to myself "I thought they killed it off to die a horrible death... in a fire". Ok so updates stop in March? I can wait a week :D
Reviewing 9.0.0.6 (Feb 21, 2008)
Great Browser.
As of March 1st Aol is killing Netscape Navigator and will no longer be offering security updates for it Unfortunately.

Finally they have done it and came out with an attractive, sleek web browser after so long!
its light on system resorces and easy to use aswell!
it has a nice colour interface i really like this web browser now
Reviewing 9.0.0.5 (Dec 28, 2007)
I completely agree that this is a great browser now, the first good release in over a decade. I should say "was" though, because today AOL made the announcement that they are discontinuing the browser for good. So even though people have been saying that Netscape Navigator was dead for years, today marks it as being official.
This will still work fine for the time being of course, but as soon as Mozilla releases the next update to Firefox it would be wise to switch in order to get the latest security updates. This is after all just a port of Firefox (which itself was a port of Netscape ironically).
RIP Netscape...
Reviewing 9.0.0.5 (Dec 12, 2007)
I keep repeating two things ad nauseam:
1. TRY before reviweing, as ol55li says.
I just don't understand comments like the new & very immature browser Flock is better... or FF users calling Netscape bloated-- that's like a pedophile criticizing a flasher.
2. This browser is ready for mission-critical production work 'better' than any other Moz variant.
Actually, IF it could use IE's Favorites system it'd be my only browser.
Reviewing 9.0.0.5 (Dec 11, 2007)
Have you even try this new version 9.0.0.5 when giving bad ratings?
This whole new browser than Netscape 8.
Netscape 9.0.0.5 base on Firefox 2.0.0.11, but Navigator is even better.
Try it, and give Your rating after that.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 28, 2007)
If I hadn't already moved on to Firefox 3 I might would have considered moving to Navigator. Navigator does have some improvements over vanilla Firefox but Firefox 3 (even thought it's a beta) has stolen Navigators thunder as far as I'm concerned. I'll give Navigator another try once FF3 is out and Netscape has upgraded to the new code.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 28, 2007)
A few months ago, more or less for the fun of it, I decided to try Navigator on my XP and Mac computers and I ended up being surprised and pleased -- it is definitely faster than Firefox on those two using the same extensions. Secondly, I haven't yet had the memory problems with it that I've had with Firefox.
I thought there would be no difference at all, but I was wrong. I don't know what the technical differences are, but my eyes aren't deceiving me. For my uses, I much prefer Navigator over Firefox and frequently use it when Opera isn't the best choice.
All these browsers are "in the making" and should be reviewed by people who actually test them, don't you think?
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 28, 2007)
A good, stable browser. The lousy default skin can be changed with a Firefox theme. Unlike Opera, plugins work well. Page rendering is fast enough and seems faster than Firefox. I use it as my main browser.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 28, 2007)

"while Mozilla foundation browsers are for hobbyists, leetspeakers & script kiddies-- at best 'maybe' in a small office with light computer use."
This is a Mozilla browser. The Netscape code base is Firefox, and they're are nearly identical in every way except for the default skin. Mozilla branched off of Netscape, taking the code that was currently in development and open sourcing it. It became Firefox, then became Netscape again.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 27, 2007)

The programs decent but in light of Safari 3 for Windows I can't see myself using this or any other browser for Windows. When I get my brand new Macbook on Nov. 30th I'll try Firefox for the Mac and see how I like it.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 27, 2007)
Netscape updates just confuse people who would otherwise be perfectly happy with Firefox. Why use a "historical" brand name to describe what is just a copied build of a serious program with some decorations thrown on it?
Netscape was great, Netscape is dead. Long live Firefox.
Reviewing 9.0.0.4 (Nov 27, 2007)
With all due respect to Netscape I'm not quite sure this browser is relevant anymore...
Reviewing 9.0.0.3 (Nov 5, 2007)
I hate this kind of UI. Mozilla may update faster, but has same UI. Opera has a highly configurable UI. Netscape died out when IE did.
Reviewing 9.0.0.3 (Nov 5, 2007)
give it up. why would we use this when we can use firefox which will be updated faster and work with more plugins. there is nothing special about this. netscape died a long time ago.
Reviewing 9.0.0.3 (Nov 3, 2007)
I like it a lot.. - but why it's installing on it's own 9.0.0.1 update - when i am aready running 9.0.0.3?
It told me on it's own "new upgate 9001 is available - what do you want to do - Take it now or Later?"
hehe - so i say Later (had just those 2 choices)
And it tells me - On your next proggy restart it will be automatically updated.. - WTF? :)
So later on i exit the browser..
and later restart it - SURE thing.. - it started installing.. and when done.. - i checked and it became back to 9.0.0.1 :(
So i had to go to install new 9.0.0.3 AGAIN.. on top of that one there ..
And now again running - 9.0.0.3 (running Windows ME still btw) :)
I like the proggy .. but why is it doing what it did? (not sure now - if it will do this to me again)
Not a big deal really .. easy to put 9.0.0.3 back again.. but still - a bit annoying.. - shouldn't be like that...
Hopefully that's just a bug and they can catch it
Reviewing 9.0.0.3 (Nov 3, 2007)
Just a security update. Worked well. I would give this a 5 but adblock doesn't work in netscape. I know noscript works, but i'm not a big fan of that add on. If weatherbug is the only reason for giving this a one, than, just uninstall it. It is a add on feature.
Reviewing 9.0.0.3 (Nov 2, 2007)
This fixes a handful of regressions that showed up in 9.0.0.2
Reviewing 9.0.0.2 (Nov 1, 2007)
Nothing at all wrong with a full function browser and it does rate a 5 as it is still Mozilla under the hood.
Personally I prefer SeaMonkey as it looks like the Netscape of old and has the same features as Netscape once did. It's also fast.
Anyways as long as they provide updates and fixes which they are as this is the 3rd browser in 2 months or so it is worth using.
Reviewing 9.0.0.1 (Oct 23, 2007)
Netscape is not a Firefox clone. Instead, Firefox, Netscape, & K-meleon are all 3 based on the Mozilla/Gecko browser engine. Each of those 3 browsers has implemented the Gecko engine individually & specifically to meet their own respective goals.
To oversimplify their differences -- In brief...
*K-meleon aims at minimalist/speed
**Firefox aims at speed + easily-extensible features
***Netscape aims at a self-contained, full-featured browsing package.
Personally I use K-meleon. However, Netscape is a systemically mature, stable, beautifully executed piece of work for those whose preferences run to a *packaged browser* where someone else picked the features. As such, Netscape deserves a 5.
Reviewing 9.0.0.1 (Oct 23, 2007)
To the reviewer below-- this is FF WITHOUT all its incompatibilities & bugs... in other words-- a browser fit for a mission-critical production system. From THAT point of view, it's inconceivable how Opera/FF/Flock/etc. get mostly 5's while Netscape is in danger of falling below 3.
Reviewing 9.0.0.1 (Oct 23, 2007)
I am sold on Flock as it adds useful features to Firefox essentially.
Why would I use Netscape? What features are added?
Reviewing 9.0.0.1 (Oct 23, 2007)
Yes Netscape and Flock are clones of Firefox because they actually look almost identical except for changing a few colors and adding a few things.
Avant and Maxthon are totally different in that they may use the same engine as IE but they are all both definitely not clones. Neither one looks at all like IE in anything they do. They work as a shell over Trident(IE's engine). Both Avant and Maxthon are as separate from IE as they can be and thats what makes them alot better than IE. Netscape and Flock can't say they are alot better than Firefox since all three have the same basic capabilities. With obvious differences in a very few areas.
Reviewing 9.0.0.1 (Oct 23, 2007)
4.76 was horrible. I know, i found a site with old software on it and for old times sake tried that version. By that time Aol had destroyed it with all there crap. Not sure of the last version before they got it. Might of been like 4.5 or so. Tried some of those really old versions but they didn't work on my pc. Probably not xp compat. Anyway, like the user below. This is clone of firefox like Advant and Maxthon are of IE. Its not bad. Fairly quick. I really see no speed difference from Firefox and this. I only give it a 4 because of the lack of themes and extensions. I did find some themes that work with this. Its in this link below. Its not allot, but its something.

Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 16, 2007)
The Netscape from 1998 had got nothing to do with the Netscape of today besides the name.
Firefox is NOT a fork of Netscape. Netscape is just a rebranded Firefox with some minor changes. How can Firefox be a fork of Netscape if Firefox was released before Netscape (I'm talking about THIS netscape, not the original one)
Firefox is a fork of the original Mozilla Suite.
Codewise nor Firefox, Netscape or the Mozilla Suite have nothing to do with Netscape 4.x. Originally the plan was to make Netscape open source and build on the Netscape 4.x sourcecode, this was intended to become Netscape 5. This however was dropped because the code was just to complex/inefficient. The whole project was canned and the Mozilla Organisation built a new browser from scratch. This came to be the Mozilla Suite. This project soon became too bloated, and Mozilla decided to split the suite into seperate applications, Firefox and Thunderbird were born as slimmed down versions. And THAT is where Netscape is based on.
So no, Firefox was there first and it certainly isn't a fork of Netscape.
Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 16, 2007)
Firefox is a fork of Netscape..
Wiki:
January 1998 was also the month that Netscape started the open source Mozilla project. Netscape publicly released the source code of Netscape Communicator 4.0 in the hopes that it would become a popular open source project. It placed this code under the Netscape Public License, which was similar to the GNU General Public License but allowed Netscape to continue to publish proprietary work containing the publicly released code.
FORK! FORK! FORK! :)
Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 16, 2007)
it IS a clone of Firefox. It uses its same code base and rendering engine. It's a clone right down to the extension manager and options. Not a bad clone though, thusly 4 stars. :-)
Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 16, 2007)
This is a solid and good browser and has been around long before firefox. It was one of the first browsers and so I would hardly call it a clone. I used Netscape back in 1995 and firefox was not even heard of then. This browser at least on my machine is faster than firefox. I run a machine with 3 gig of memory and dual processor and this browser is great. I also use firefox and IE when the mood strikes me and I also consider firefox to be a good and solid browser. But to call netscape a clone is simply untrue and wrong in my humble opinion of course. I give this browser a 5 as I would firefox.
Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 15, 2007)
Very impressive for a change, and I agree it's lighter and smoother running, and has a far better looking GUI than any FF skin I've seen. It's also nice to see the good old ship's wheel splash screen on startup. I could definitely get used to this...

Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 15, 2007)
Like my review for the beta version that came out in August, pretty much the same here. Pretty fast browsing. Stable, and no AOL bologna attached. But it still doesn't install allot of extension/add on's and no themes from the Firefox site. It states that they are compatible, but allot aren't. Its worth a look if your into trying new software.
Reviewing 9.0 (Oct 15, 2007)
A solid offering, but the only reason to use this Firefox clone instead of Firefox is because you're addicted to Netscape.com services
Netscape was good, back in the days Prodigy was a hit.

netscape 9 release candidate 1 has a checkmark to NOT allow 3rd party cookies. firefox does have this option. netscape takes all the best firefox offers and uses it. it is in their licensing agreement. LINKPAD is awesome!!. firefox does NOT have this either. netscape option are way better. netscape is better than firefox. people need to try it and realize this. it is part of aol. thats ok. aol is awesome if you ask me. they helped pioneer the web anyway through the 90's. there is no AOL branded stuff in the browser.
Reviewing 9.0 RC1 (Oct 3, 2007)
Yes, this is good. The only thing I've had to install so far is Sun Java.
It will be my default browser now, It's very quick.
Thank you Netscape for this software.
Reviewing 9.0 RC1 (Oct 1, 2007)
Best browser in my estimation and is faster than IE and FF. It works well and does what it is suppose too. Netscape has been around long before Mozilla in early 90's and so, everyone keeps saying it is nothing more than a FF makeover. I wonder who took from who and when? I have them all on my computer and by far Netscape is faster than IE and FF and one of the best as far as I am concerned. It has not crashed on me once, unlike FF but I too like Firefox, . There is no reason at all on these forums to put down anyones software, but it seems to happen here. I give it a high rating, it is simply put, one of the best (and notice all you naysayers, I did say one of the best)....
Reviewing 9.0 RC1 (Oct 1, 2007)
Especially for a production system, I'll take this over ANY Moz foundation variant any day of the week, particularly during beta periods and right after initial & main releases.
Nothing further need be said.
@ crashoverride: Your statement is 'in theory': it's the conflicts caused by addons & constant, drastic makeovers, why 'in practice' FF winds up slower than Netscape.
Reviewing 9.0 RC1 (Oct 1, 2007)
Really don't understand how it can be claimed that this is faster than Firefox since it's just Firefox with the Netscape brand and a few added feature to integrate with Netscape's Services.
@horsecharles
That makes sense. I guess the reason I never notice any impact is that I always weed out any addons that impact performance. Just not worth having the added feature if it slows everything down.
Reviewing 9.0 RC1 (Oct 1, 2007)
Faster rendering than IE7 or FF and the other browsers out there. Pretty much the same browser with some new features.

I'm surprised, it's fairly decent & I like the weather bug in the status bar.
Reviewing 9.0 Beta 3 (Aug 18, 2007)
The old Netscape is still around. Its Seamonkey 1.1.4. At least the look is. Its built on the firefox code. This browser is also built on it also. For performance, its not terrible. But when u go to add on's in netscape.com, it says this new version of Netscape should be compatible with the new version of firefox's themes and extensions. I got allot of my firefox extensions to work ok, but a few don't work. But, none of the themes i tried worked. And i tried about 20 or so. Overall, this is the first version of Netscape in i don't know how long thats not bloated with aol this, winamp that. Its pretty clean. You get the extra netscape doo dads like the news in the toolbar and other things. But its not too bad. Still though, why use this with Firefox is around. But heck, you want another browser to goof with, Give this a shot. Also, for a beta, its pretty stable. Been using this for a day now, no weird lock ups or anything.

Opera fanboys-- your browser can't render properly or access at all some sites... fix that first, before you start crowing... and stop blaming the website op or coder-- none of your other competitors do.
See how Lands(above me) curses someone who dares criticize a known, unfixed flaw(for years now) of Opera?
What’s New in Netscape Navigator 9?
The following is new & unique to latest release:
Visual Refresh
Netscape Navigator 9's theme has been updated to save screen-space and leave more room for the websites you visit.
URL Correction
Navigator 9 will automatically correct common typos in URLs. For example, if you accidentally type googlecom, Navigator will fix it be to google.com. The browser will watch for nearly 30 different types of common mistakes and correct them for you (asking you to confirm, if you choose to enable confirmation).
News Menu and Sidebar
The latest news is built right into the browser, under the News menu. Provided by Netscape.com, you can customize the menu to only contain the news sections you want to monitor. You can also open the News sidebar to always keep an eye on what's happening.
Link Pad
The Link Pad is a new sidebar feature that allows you to save links/URLs that you want to visit later without cluttering your bookmarks. Just drag a link over the Link Pad status bar icon and drop it to save it in the Link Pad. By default, clicking on an item in the Link Pad will open it in the browser and remove it from the list, saving you the step of deleting it.
News Tracker
The Netscape Tracker sidebar lets you monitor breaking news as it happens, via Netscape.com.
In-browser voting
Share your opinions with the world! The icons in the Navigator address bar let you share interesting stories you find and vote on stories shared by others.
Extension Compatibility
Navigator 9 shares an architecture with the latest Mozilla technologies; as such, Navigator 9 will let you install extensions that are compatible with Firefox ® 2.
Sidebar Mini Browser
You've always been able to have bookmarks open in the sidebar, but we've improved this functionality and extended it to all links, not just bookmarks. Additionally, we've added a navigation toolbar to the sidebar for even easier split-screened browsing. Just right-click on a link and select "Open Link in Sidebar" to get started!
Restart Netcape
A smalll but oft-requested feature: you can now restart Navigator (and keep your current tabs intact) by selecting "Restart Navigator" from the File menu.
Resizeable Textarea
Drag the bottom-right corners of text fields in forms to add more typing space.
Tab History
Opening a link in a new tab will give the new tab the same history as the source tab for a more seamless tabbed browsing experience.
OPML Support
Netscape Navigator supports importing and exporting your bookmarks in OPML, a popular format for sharing lists of newsfeeds.
Throbber
By popular demand, the Netscape 7-style throbber is back. Click on it any time to visit Netscape.com
Combined Stop/Reload button
To save space in your toolbar, we've combined the stop and reload buttons. Because you never need both at the same time, the toolbar will only show the relevant half of the pair.
Friends' Activity Sidebar
If you are a member at Netscape.com, you can keep tabs on what your friends find interesting. This sidebar lets you view your friends latest votes, comments, and story submissions.
Sitemail Notification
This icon will sport an exclamation point when you have new Netscape.com sitemail messages waiting for you.
Since Navigator 9 is based on the newest Mozilla ® technologies, there are additional features in Navigator 9 that were not available in Netscape Browser 8.x. You can read about those new features in these release notes from Mozilla:

Reviewing 9.0 Beta 1 (Jun 6, 2007)
I find absolutely nothing wrong with this, unlike others.
It's a great improvement over previous version 8: re both additional features and layout.
I also find it superior to all other Moz variants vis a vis production-quality-ready. Yes, it does need a smidgen layout tweaking re some types of embedded video, but that's why it's labeled Beta(& initial one at that); & in spite of that it's still very qualified for work use.
It's ironic that more extensions are compatible w/ this than with minefield, bon echo, seamonkey.
Reviewing 9.0 Beta 1 (Jun 5, 2007)
Installed quickly. Works well. Likewise I can't personally see the need for the 'share' button, in fact I think it gets in the way - obscuring the RSS icon. All-In-All good work in progress.

I've had a few quirks with customizing my toolbar etc. But overall it's pretty stable for the first beta build.

but... how come this browser is now PERFECTLY IDENTICAL to firefox??? i know the fox is born out of this one but, they are now one a skin of the other!!! someone enlighten me!!!
Bottom lines:
- at least Netscape has the New Tab button in the toolbar by default, unlike the other nasty idiots.
- untolerably green! get that browser out of my eyes!
- that "Share" gimmick is idiotic at least.

Continuing lame browser based on Mozilla. Aol puts its little hands on this like the last few versions of Netscape. One thing i liked about this version over Mozilla, they include a tab bar button on the personal toolbar. Not sure why Mozilla and now Seamonkey never included that.
Reviewing 8.1.3 (Apr 5, 2007)
Netcape supposed to take the best from Firefox and IE,using their platforms (Gecko and Explorer),switching between them when necessary and with a couple of adds-on more than a competiton. But that today just isn't enough.
Netscape 8.1.3 is fast and secure, robust than the others, but if it wants to beat Mozilla and IE7,it must show much more.If you have the top today's PC,there's no web browser which won't work properly (it really must be a crap),so all these what AOL did, isn't the right way.Just to do the clone with a different interface won't do it.
AOL must understand that when someone is used to a particular web browser in his PC,it won't change it so easily. The new one must be really much, much better, offered something completelly new,not just to be the same browser with a different interface, which cannot beat the original,it just may come preetty close. But that's it!
I hope that AOL will realize this and make their own platform (machine),innovative one, with some revolutionary ideas in form of adds-on and plugs-in.'till than it will be in the shadow of Firefox&IE and Opera!
Reviewing 8.1.3 (Apr 2, 2007)
It's a faster browser, but with better alternatives available. I might switch from firefox if all the addons can be use in NETSCAPE. The world browser is one of my favorite is fast and small in size with all the basic features.

For the life of me I can't see why they still insist on releasing these. I've had so many people come to me confused about Mozilla vs Firefox vs Netscape that you think they could just sort it out and release the one product. Netscape versions are always based on previous branches anyway - what's the advantage of using it over Firefox?

Been waiting for this upgrade. Fixes bugs that have plagued NS8 for sometime now. Netscape 9 beta is due any day now also.
Reviewing 8.1.2 (Dec 3, 2006)
Not Impressed. Netscape is extremely clunky. Importing of bookmarks and such from firefox failed, Autologin for gmail puts you in an unable to log-out loop. The spyware scanner finds items, then they dissapear when you try to select or deselect them. About a half million features which would be great if you used it all of the time, but definitely not for the novice or basic internet users. Offers you the ability to surf with ie engine or firefox engine, but if you change this, you cant as easily change it back..
On the plus side, the browser seems to load a little faster than the 7x versions.

Good browser, I love how you can seamlessly switch rendering engines! Winscape theme is a lot like FireFox. I like some of the additional features it has. I just wish it didn't take so long to load and seems kind of sluggish in general. If they updated to the lastest Mozilla code faster I'd feel a little better too.
Reviewing 8.1.2 (Sep 27, 2006)
As a browser, 7.2 in itself was ok. But you still got the entire aol crap- stuff in your ie favorites, on your start up, in your links. Thats why i look down on the 7.0 series. Than they went to 8.0 and it was horrible. Since this series is based on firefox i saw no need to try and use this mess of a browser. In anycase, i mostly use the grandchild of old netscape- Seamonkey, well in looks anyway if you use that theme and i have the latest firefox.
Reviewing 8.1.2 (Sep 27, 2006)
Browser 12,
I disagree. Netscape 7.2 was the best one and then AOL really stripped it down and made it ugly.
NS 7.2 needs to be refreshed and redone.

Reviewing 8.1 (Aug 5, 2006)
Very stable - very good choice of 2 rendering engines IE and Fox. Nice AIM/ICQ client in sidebar. Guite good passwords managing. Nice RSS feed viewing.
I like this version better than the 8.0.x Its a complex solution for beginners and professionals.
Firefox is without extensions not a perfect browser. Opera is the best complex internet suite. Netscape is interesting and safe browser:-))
Reviewing 8.1 (Jul 30, 2006)
Pretty amazing how bad Netscape has gotten. This is a continuing downfall version with this release. Its mostly based on the very good Firefox browser. Why would you use this watered down aol of an excuse version. Plus it has no themes or extensions avail. like firefox. I scratch my head when i see people who like this. I use Seamonky myself since the old Netscape was the grandfather of that browser look wise. Firefox, Opera and IE are better than this. The funny feature is the change the rendering to IE look for certain webpage option. Netscape 4.79 was the last non aol and good version of the Netscape name. Let it rest in peace.
Reviewing 8.1 (Jul 10, 2006)
The most usable browser!
All right, I'm a web developer and have been using NS 8.x for the last year. It's my first choice of Browser and will be for a very long time. The installation process was simple and very convenient.
I have installed it on 20+ machines...and have NEVER had the machine restart on me or been asked to restart.
There is no email reader (as opposed to NS 7.x) so I don't understand how setting up email can be a pain. You can set up web based email accounts as Simple sign-ons which is useful. I do it for Gmail, Yahoo, and another 3rd party email address, which was as simple as typing in the web page, username and password (stored securely on your machine).
The Browser helps you out in every aspect of browsing...You want to see something rendered in IE, you can switch to the Trident engine. You want to open new pop-ups in a new tabs, you can do that. You can protect yourself from spyware and ID Theft.
NS 8.x is my first choice while Mozilla FF is my second, Opera is my third, and then any text based browser followed by IE.
I am not affiliated with Netscape in any way.
This is simply from over a year of use.

Wish I could give this minus 5 stars.
The installation process FORCED A RESTART of my computer, not as a bug, but actually ON PURPOSE - no warning, no dialogue about saving your work, just an unstoppable shutdown and restart. How dare Netscape implement something like that. I was only going to install it as an extra browser to preview sites in Dreamweaver, now I shall never touch Netscape again, God knows it was never a joyous experience anyway.
Reviewing 8.1 (Jan 26, 2006)
BIG improvement over previous versions. Loads quicker on my machine, like the added-spyware protection and it renders sites much quicker!
Reviewing 8.1 (Jan 26, 2006)
Very good Browser...
Pros:
1- The new security center works very well.
2- Site controls is great.
3- phishing protection works (tested) as spyware detection on downloads (tested) GREAT feature here. Not perfect...but much better than the competition.
4- Profiles, good for some ppl..who don´t want a guest account in xp.
5- in buil rss reader (simple, just like the new rrs reader in ie beta 2)
6- passcard and form fill, similar to ff..but good
7- Ability to change ff to ie whithout extensions..
Cons:
1 - No need for the personal bar...( it´s things like that give the bloated image that they are trying to clean).
2 - Netscape loading message ...
3 - More themes please...
4 - a litle more heavier than FF..but not for much..and irrelevant for 2 yrs machines.

I think its a damn good browser and would call it ff 1.5++(added features)
One should never forget netscape was original browser from which we see ff.Netscape 8 was slow, but this one has loads od features apart from normal stuff!
whats wrong with anti-spyware,profiles,ie&ff rendering,security centre,better form-filler,better options lay-out,better site-control and other stuff!
people have developed bias towards certain products and without using the browser they just jump the gun, people who have used it have rated it fairly!

Reviewing 8.1 (Jan 25, 2006)
It is rather bloated. Opened an IE and firefox tab in both Netscpae and Firefox. Netscape with no extensions uses more Ram than Firefox does with 41 extensions installed. It does render rather quickly but Firefox renders faster. I find that multi profile login crap they added annoying. There's barely any extensions for it. The fusion theme doesn't display correctly.
Netscape ISP, Rhapsody, Real Arcade and WeatherBug
Is all an optional part of the install.

Netscape seem to still miles away from IE or indeed the New Opera 8.5 which handles web browsing a treat.
Netscape are going to have to wake up to the world and start listening to there critics and err do something a bit more original than simply copy what has always been done.
My advice stick with Opera!

Nice Update but i like Opera ;) East or West Opera is the Best...
Reviewing 8.0.4 (Oct 19, 2005)
Thanks for the update! Netscape is the cutting edge I was looking for in a browser. With it's many customizations and security emphasis, Netscape is the browser it once was and better. Anyone having difficulties with the browser should use the help function or read the f.a.q. or visit the Netscape community. Netscape has many improvements and is stable. IE and FF stand alone browsers cannot compete with the quality of the new Netscape.
Reviewing 8.0.4 (Oct 19, 2005)
A neutral 3 : Netscape Browser is ok, just ok in my opinion.
@golden_sun : I'm sorry but I just cannot accept what would be a faulty Avant Browser endorsing your enthusiasm for Netscape: Avant Browser does not crash when handled normally, and moreover is *much* faster than Netscape. I'm afraid such arguments are the wrong ones to advance in order to qualify Netscape.
Reviewing 8.0.3.3 (Oct 3, 2005)
Use of both the Firefox and IE rendering engines virtually eliminates compatibility problems associated with using just FF (eliminating the need for IE View extension). Security features are more extensive than in either FF or IE and the native RSS and webmail support are welcome features. With that being said, I feel the default interface is still awkward and cluttered, but an improvement over previous Netscape versions. I feel this is worth downloading and at least experimenting with, especially if FF or IE don’t fully meet your needs.
I apologize to Opera users for not having the experience with that browser to make a comparison.
Reviewing 8.0.3.3 (Aug 23, 2005)
I previously had Avant Browser. It gave me problems, crashed, and I had to restart my computer. Now that I tried Netscape, it tottaly rocks. Never freezes, very fast, and with a very good interface, Netscape is one, if not the best, of the most popular browsers. A++++++++++++++++++++++

I don't get the low ratings given either-- i have no problems using it: it's faster then FF for instance, and it handles plugins better than Opera-- which still has a long ways to go in that area.
Reviewing 8.0.3.1 (Aug 4, 2005)
What a suprise! Netscape is The Best! I tried Fire Fox, Maxthon and even IE7. Netscape 8 in its current form is great. With it's IE engine and Mozilla background, I was amazed to find it everything I needed. It still has it's classic Netscape features but with the added security of Mozilla products. It's what IE7 wants to be. I had no problems setting up and running. I was searching for a new browser and returned to where I started, to the original. Very customizable. Auto rendering of IE or Gecko engine is amazing (you can manually set which one you want also). Plays nice with SBC Yahoo DSL. I was able to add SBC Yahoo search engine with no problem. There is nothing that this browser is lacking. Future version should be slimmer and faster. Compared to the other browsers, Netscape is a step ahead and surpassing the others.
Reviewing 8.0.3.1 (Aug 2, 2005)
I still have Netscape Navigator 4.08. Wow, so old. I agree though. They could just keep that shell and improve its functionality and reliability, and what a great browser it would be.
But, come on, even this new bloated stuff still gets the job done. Even if you hate it, it deserves more than just one star.

Reviewing 8.0.3.1 (Jul 26, 2005)
I am still very nostalgic about Netscape, but this is horrible. They took Firefox and stripped away functionality, added a really ugly theme, moved the toolbar to the wrong side, and added AOL garbage. I fail to see why anyone would want to use this. As for the IE compatibility, everyone already has IE on their system. If it's needed for a certain page just use it. I would have liked to see Netscape make a return but this isn't it. Not as long as AOL has anything to do with it.
Reviewing 8.0.3.1 (Jul 26, 2005)
Breaks XML, eats memory, buggy, slow....
I'll give a 2 for at least an effort at making a fair alternative browser on two engines while this is partially an IE front-end. Which isnt an easy task, but they could have at least say its a browser, or better yet an alpha; due to the quality of this product.
Still, Maxthon is the winning frontend for me. Opera being the best alternative browser with a unique engine.
Reviewing 8.0.2 (Jun 17, 2005)
While it seems like a good idea to get the best of both worlds it's still too buggy. I agree that one of the best ways is to use Firefox and switch only when necessary. It's very easy with the extension made for that purpose.
I don't think they will be able to keep supporting this. I mean, Internet Explorer is going through several changes. I expect that IE7 may win a few people back but Firefox will continue to attract and get maybe a 25% market share.
But Netscape is doomed.
Reviewing 8.0.2 (Jun 16, 2005)
They're got a go idea here with combining the 2 engines. Their implementation however is too cumbersome. Thise thing also eats up too much ram. I like the passcard feature though, very handy for my use anyway. I think I'll continue using firefox then for the pages FF doesn't like i'll use the cripple IE. I used Maxthon for a while to I finally accepted that it is a crutch for IE. So in my opinion until the fix the fact that netscape is Cumbersome, it's garbadge.
Gonna have to give it a 3 out of 5.

Like:
- Dual Engine Rendering (Trident & Gecko)
- Unique Interface
- Anti-phishing Protection
Dislike:
- Not cross-platform (No Mac or Linux Distro)
- Default rendering for "safe" sites in Trident
- Overhead Required (uses far too many resources)
Overall: 4 out of 5
I recommend it for people who want to use Firefox but can't just give up Internet Explorer because of poorly coded sites. You can set it to render all sites in Gecko by default and for those that require IE, you can select to render those sites with Trident.

Not perfect but it's great for those of us that prefer Firefox but need to open IE in order for some sites to work/display properly. It's the best of both worlds. Firefox extensions work in Netscape by modifying the .rdf file until developers start making their extension compatible. The naysayers either never have to use IE or IE is their default browser. For the rest of us it's a compelling browser.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 21, 2005)
I find it silly how people are bashing on this for all the security flaws that were a part of the firefox browser component. They patched it, right? Anyway, I've long said that AOL has had the reverse Midas touch on all the software it has gobbled up, but NS8 actually seems pretty good so far. Just as long as you don't install the extra crap with it and tell it to use firefox on all pages by default, then switch to the IE engine for sites that are M$ whipped.
Other than that, mouse gestures would make this really great. The mouse gestures for mozilla wouldn't install.
Personally, I think I'll stick with Opera. But this browser has some potential.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 21, 2005)
If you're thinking about downloading 8.0.1, ask yourself this:
"Am I really ok with a team *knowingly* releasing a version 8.0 full of security flaws and holes, only to release 8.0.1 lesss than 24 hours later?". Because that's exactly what Netscape did. They left 44 holes in 8.0 and released it anyways. Then releaseed 8.0.1 a day later.
Use Firefox. Use Opera. Use IE. Just stay away from this blight. Netscape died for obvious reasons years ago, and little or nothing seems to have actually changed since then...

With the plug-in any page can be opened in IE from the Firefox conext menu ... without the deep sense of unease that comes with installing anything AOL.

I am using A HP 1.30 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP and my question is why is this browser so SLOW. It is horrible. Mozilla is much faster, so is IE. I don't think it is just me but all of these browser skins such as Maxthon, Avant and the new Netscape cause my system to become very slow and unstable. My system fan begins to run and does not shut off until I close these applications. I don't like to but I have to go back to using IE for system stability. Any ideas why this happens.

I've personally never liked using FF due to it being slow at loading images this has always anoyed me, but Netscape lets you switch to the IE engine which for me is great. I love the layout, the ability to customize and make your own multibars is great. It has crashed a couple of times but hopefully this will be fixed in later versions, this will not stop me from using Netscape as it's the first browser out of many that i have tried and actually liked. I have used it for a couple of days now and have completly stopped using other browsers, making this my default browser.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 21, 2005)
The skins are both horribly ugly, but I suppose that is a personal opinion. Hopefully someone will make some nicer ones for it. My biggest complaint is the clutter they have added and the customization they have taken away. You can't move the search bar where you want it, nor can you remove it. You can't tell it not to save searches, passwords and forms, only clear them. The whole thing is dumbed down and full of AOL junk. The option to use the IE engine is very useful however; you can actually use Windows Update with it, meaning there is no longer any need to run IE again. I just wonder if using the IE engine also brings along all the security flaws of IE. In my opinion it would be simpler to just run Firefox and use IE on pages where it's necessary. While I'm very nostalgic about the Netscape name, this is just a really bad AOLized version of Firefox.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 21, 2005)
The appearance has greatly improved. The addition of having a choice for a search engine is a plus. All in all a good browser with good functions.
Saying that, I've tried just about every browser out there and for me K-Meleon is the best. I can't help but go back to it for speed and functionality. I'm surprised that many haven't checked it out.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 20, 2005)
I find it pathetic and yet not surprising that AOL has managed to destroy the once-great Netscape browser. Since version 4.5 of Netscape, AOL has managed to cause more and more damage to the browser's image than it has good.
Version 8... I mean 8.0.1 is no exception. The new interface is a nightmare, and what a shocker that it tries to install a bunch of options in the background.
I did not have any of the experiences with crashing that others have described, but I do find the new interface to be clunky, and I attribute the problem to AOL-izing it.
As a result, I will be sticking with IE and FF and uninstalling Netscape until a new version is released that looks appealing.
Reviewing 8.0.1 (May 20, 2005)
I like it a lot. It's like Mozilla plus more. The best thing is being able to render with both engines. I like how they switched from the Netscape search to just plain Google even though they are basically the same. Only problem I noticed was fullscreen (F11) doesn't seem to work correctly. Only thing I really wish I could do and can't really would be an option to hide the "GO" and "SEARCH" bottons as I never use them I just hit enter, but that is minor. I highly recommend this to people who wish they could only use Mozilla and never have to load IE, you can use just this more then you can use just Mozilla.

Normally when I see "Netscape..." I turn the other way and run. However, I've been reading about this release for a little while now. I am one of those people who have to use IE for certain websites and choose to use Mozilla for others. I don't like have 3 browser windows open all the time, Netscape allows me to have 1 browser window with 3 tabs, 2 IE engine tabs and 1 Mozilla Tab.
I also, like the easy email login access with the "security" of using the master password...a little sketchy for me, but a nice bonus for the lazy people out there.
This is a huge step for Netscape.

Having used this browser for most of today I feel I can at least leave an informed opinion(sorry to see people submitting ill-informed comments just so they can be the first to comment, reminds me of another site..)
Yes, you need to turn off quite a lot of stuff, both during and after installation, to have a browser that's not laden down with unwanted extras, but some of this stuff reflects some proper hard work that's been put into this release. This isn't a geek browser, it's an aol user's browser, and that makes a lot of sense consider the brand owners.
Yes, they should have held off the release and just put out the version based on firefox 1.04 - they probably realised that way before they released 8.0 but no doubt the corporate machine was already in motion.
Not all of the features they've created were a good idea, but at least they've gone out on a limb and actually worked to create new features that aren't in firefox - their RSS support is much cooler than that featured in firefox, even if it is a little over used.
This browser is ultimately a good thing, because someone has actually tried to go one better - even if they don't succeed in every way.

Good point Stephen (posted above my post)... not to mention Netscape 8.0.1 is ONLY available in the English language!! I can see this going very far, especially overseas....
A great improvement over previous versions. I love the new ability to set security settings per site and you can load a web site/page in either MSIE or Firefox mode (i.e. either proprietary Microsoft coded or a standards based web page).
One question... why does the "Download" file name say "nsb-install-8-0.exe"? Shouldn't it be something like "nsb-install-8-0-1.exe"??? Netscape/AOL, how do we know which version we've downloaded if you don't change the file name? Geez.
It's still a great browser and I won't downgrade my rating because of this oversight.

The most important feature is the ability to swap between ie and ff. Invaluable for webmasters. Layout is ok and the winscape theme is an improvement. No issues here, those of you experiencing crashes should clean up your systems. Or get an xbox.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 20, 2005)
I installed it, Ran it for 5 minutes before the first crash, removed it. Firefox alone is far more reliable.
I am not impressed. Netscape has really gone downhill.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 20, 2005)
Pretty much improved from Netscape 7.x
I am not competing this with Firefox because it is apple vs orange.
Lost of good features, is a tottaly revised browser. I like the features like:
- WebMail integration
- Automatic detect whether the Safe browsing to determine which engine to use for rendering
- No memory hog as Firefox does after sometime using it
- Neat full screen browsing
- Built in with WeatherBug forecast
- Good tab browsing features out of the box, no need to have extra extensions
- Provide both rich and simple themes
- DataCard and password storage enhanced
- Other standard firefox features being enhanced.
The cons is:
They are still using FF v1.0 engine, which a bit lack behind current FF 1.0.4
So, careful with the security issues.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 20, 2005)
Netscape 8 is an interesting browser as it's a combination of Firefox and Internet Explorer. There are also many innovative features like built-in detection of spyware or phishing sites, all excellent stuff.
It's is just a real shame they didn't study Firefox's success. The reason why it succeeds where others have failed is that it has a simple user interface yet the ability through extensions to make it feature rich. So why did Netscape come out with the most complicated and confusing interface? As a result I can't see it making a dent in the browser usage market.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 20, 2005)
Netscape Browser sucks like a $20.00 wh***!
The bottom line is Microsoft will be blamed.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
congratulations on the most heinous browser design job to date. clearly design took a back seat to functionality on this turd. hopefully for all the windows users who plan on making this their everydayer they'll have some themeing options, but i wouldnt hold my breath
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
I've been pleased with Netscape 8 for the few hours that I have used it. I like Firefox, but I find that there are too many tools that I use daily that require Internet Explorer, so I will not make the switch because I do not want to juggle two separate browsers.
Netscape 8 encorporates both IE and FF in one single browser. I have not experienced any crashes that others have mentioned. It's not perfect, but it does what I need it to where Firefox will not.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
this should be the joke of the year,as far i m concerned.Netscape has released a final version, which perhaps is same as the beta one,and has completely ignored the suggestions of reviewers, and is just old-wine in new bottle.it is still bloated with useless aol software, weather bar,etc..l.
moreover still it is based on firefox 1.03,and is expected to release an update for firefox 1.04.
how dopes aol expect us to shift from firefox, there is no common sense prevailing there.plz give us a break we live in 21st century and not stome-age!
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
What ever AOL touch they will destroy it, Netscape was good not any more.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
Crappy Skin and crashes all the time. This Browser is trash!
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
Crashes and locks up more than most betas. Good idea just a lot of bad code. They really should keep it as beta and not just take the beta and call it final.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
First, it's not even beta anymore so what is this doing here?
Second, all the colors suck. How annoying is light teal and orange? They don't even go together.
The interface is all messy and cluttered.
What a freaking mess of a piece of junk this is.
Just use Firefox!!!!!!!!!
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
This isn't beta. It is a final release. I give it a resounding "Eh." I see no incentive to switch to it from Firefox, whose engine it uses.
Reviewing 8.0 (May 19, 2005)
Can someone tells me on where to download full version of this browser? I don't think the full version is only 300kb large, must be a download stub.
This s so that I can install it on computers without internet access.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Apr 2, 2005)
Good ol Netscape, used to be the browser for the educated (IE users relax)which of course wasn't that true. AOL listen up you ahve bought the following companies Time Warner (CNN ect),Winamp, ICQ, Netscape. Each one of the above listed companies is making good money at the same time you have removed the unique thing each had and you didnt...creativty and the ability to produce a quality product with out compromise. No sir you couldnt leave em alone, You basicly killed netscape and what happened to the creative minds of Winamp??
This beta browser can be the thing that turns the tide either way it is tight and feature packed, the beta is stable and hopefully final release will be as well.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 5, 2005)
It always amazes me that people expect perfection from beta software. I have made this my default browser. It lacks the speed of Opera and the flexability of Firefox, but I find it very simple and straight-forward to use.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
I'm having problems viewing images from certain sites out-of-the-box - needs work.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
other than being ugly to look i actualy like it ...it has the fire fox vibe as far as hidden under the hood...but then again netscape has always used some sort of ugly blueish grey eye sore as there default look.since its beta and will change i give it a 4
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
After giving it a second chance, I found that it was quite stable and has some very good features. In fact, I made it my default browser. It has "real" tabbed browsing and is every bit as good as Firefox or Mozilla and maybe better.
However, two drawbacks are the awful design (color) and being stuck with Netscape search on the tool bar. I think that the future will bring better things.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
unfortunately, I expected more...
skin is awful, tool bar is not that good, the weather forecast is something they forgot about at all... if u pay attention, its only for US codes... I understand that AOL is in the states, however people around the world would also like to have in their browser a weather broadcast for their country...
i personally prefer Firefox, Avant Browser and Opera Beta 8.
IE is only for windows update anyway.
well thats my point of view...
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
We need more value adds from this browser, If Netscape hopes to migrate people from IE or Firefox.
The Mozilla skins are not compatible with the Netscape themes. So will have to live with the 'kiddish' Blue theme for Netscape. Though the browser is fast, the UI is a disappointment. The UI elements lack any roll-over effect and is too crude to work with. Hopefully they would make this work with regular Mozilla themes and do an overhaul of the entire UI.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
This interface outright stolen from the iRider browser, which includes some good ideas, but is hampered by a stupefying interface. Can iRider sue AOL over this? But it did import all my settings better than Firefox did and it shares many of the same keyboard shortcuts as NetCaptor, which is great. Like Firefox, how come I can actively rearrange my browser tab order?
Finally, I'd like to thank AOL for plastering my screen with popups when I visited their site. What jerks.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 4, 2005)
While Firefox is a great browser, Netscape just destroyed with their feet that Mozilla created with their hands... what an awful and cumbersome UI... do they know there's something called usability???
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
it crashed when it asked me if i wanted to import data. it has an NASTY looking skin.. and i absolutley hate applications that use "fancy" rounded corners and stuff. firefox suits my needs better.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
The view is still nasty. That seems to have always been the downfall for every Netscape browser. I use Firefox and it rules, Netscape interface is just brutal. Hopefully for them they improve it a lot before final release.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
The browser look is very nice. Attractive design and color and in that aspect better than firefox. You got more options in Netscape 8, so you got more control from the end user prespective (not for power users who use about:config in firefox). RSS, search engine etc should be customizable. I haven't tested the stability yet. Another good thing is it didn't install any of the AOL junk.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
All Mozilla Products are great for me but when Netscape touches it, it turns to crap. This kept opening IE over and over. I had 30 windows open for IE. Firefox still rules!
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
good stuff from netscape surprisingly. added many useful options though the browser has become a bit complicated. but i guess it only takes time to get used to it. won't switch from my firefox but it's still an excellent alternative to ie/opera
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
Not as good as Opera or Firefox, but still better than NS 7.2 overall. The layout could use some work, too.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
It was very unstable and slow. Netscape 8 crashed twice. The idea of RSS on one of the bars is a good idea if you can choose your feed (maybe they can develope that idea in the next versions).
I like the ability to choose your browser engine(NS or IE).
After an hour, I uninstalled Netscape 8. My impression was that there was a clear vision of features in a very rough, early and prototypical version.
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)

This is one nice beta. But how do I set the Web Search options?
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Mar 3, 2005)
Great! New features are interesting and useful.
It asked me "5-digit US Zip Code" in installation. I think, the developers thinks as if the world is just US. :) I am not from US, therefore I made up it :)

Good stuff.
I really like it. It's a nice change. I think that once they unclutter the toolbar area at the top it will be top notch.
I gave it a 4 only because of the clutter at the top. It just looks too busy at the top.
:)
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
Good attempt to revive Gecko! I have to point out a fact that it's only a "beta", and so bugs are expected.
It now allows users to adjust security settings based on each site, which is actually the functionality planned to be implemented in Firefox 2.0, according to Ben Goodger's latest Firefox 2.0 Roadmap.
But I discoverd that if i use Netscape Browser Prototype 0.5.6 to login my gmail account, it will result either a crash or a blank page after loading for a while.
Also, it seems that I can't change the default RRS feeds to my favorite ones.
Ability to load Active X is a little bir odd to me. I think NS should rather abandon it.
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
First of all, I use Mozilla Firefox as my default browser wich is .
This new Netscape looks quite nice and the feature to change the browser engine on the fly is absolutely fantastic :). It will completely remove the need for Internet Explorer and people can freely use only one browser that handles Windows Update for example. For other sites I definetly recommend Mozilla's engine as it is the one that has perfect support for standards. Go to http://www.mozilla-europe.org and be there a while, try it with both engines and you'll see that IE has some trouble handling the site. And the only reason for this is that IE is too outdated to handle that site.
On the other hand this new Netscape looks quite cofusing and hard to use. Because of this I'd recommend Firefox instead of this. And make a wish that somone creates an extension that handles both engines too for Firefox.
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
Fantastic Browser..No Problems whatsoever as yet..The rendering functionality is really cool..Try using Windows Update..It works here!! A refreshing change from the otherwise boring browsers. Too good to be a prototype..Take my word for it..Try it..U'll love it!!
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
i actually installed this piece of crap.
you get a nice, big, obnoxious, static splash screen (not sure if there's an option to disable it). the gui is comical ... it's hard to tell what buttons are enabled vs. disabled ... not to mention it's cluttered with crap by default. there's stuff scrolling and blinking in the gui and the bold use of black text on dark green is great (no). -4 here.
navigation seems ok ... tabs are nice i guess. popup blocker ... meh. +1 here
the only thing i could see this being useful as is a developer tool to compare netscape vs. mozilla ... but since it's built on .9.3 it's useless anyways!
argh.
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
A decent endeavor, but overall pointless as Firefox already has an extension called IEView that adds the option to open a page in IE to your right-click menu.
As for why not to just use IE...
It's slower, even with SP2 it's less secure, it has less features, and it's nowhere near as customizable. IE at this point only exists on my PC...
a) because MS won't allow it to be properly uninstalled
b) some sites use badly written scripts that only work with IE (and some use standards-based scripts that don't work right in ie)
In general, IE is still just Spry Mosaic with 6 layers of shoddy patches.
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
I'm just curious:
Why bother with the second engine? Just use the IE engine which is the de facto standard on the 'net. It seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to for no good reason.
A higher than neutral rating for what will hopefully rectify the woeful debacle that has been Netscape for several years.
Reviewing 0.5.6 (Nov 30, 2004)
without having it tested yet, I really like the idea to have both rendering engines in the same browser and all it takes to switch is the press of a button. very good idea.
Reviewing 7.2 (Sep 22, 2004)
This simply can't touch Mozilla. Give yourself a break, use Mozilla or Firefox. Doesn't anyone else get tired of the dull appearance? They should give whatever bucks they are spending on this crap to Mozilla.
Reviewing 7.2 (Aug 18, 2004)
As I write i'm using Netscape 7.2.. So far so good. Loads a heck of alot quicker than 7.1. Just wondering if netscape mail will increase their mail size !! heheheee
Reviewing 7.2 (Aug 18, 2004)
Does this release support the excellent bookmarking system that the old 4.7x versions had? I've got 3 different browsers installed on my system because all my bookmarks are using the old system and all the new browsers sort them when I don't want them to and use scrolling for many bookmarks which is a really stupid thing to copy IE for. Definitely not for the net savvy. The other browsers I use for testing and backup purposes.
Reviewing 7.2 (Aug 17, 2004)
Sweet! I'm glad to see that they are still releasing new versions. This is great for the people who don't have a clue what that "mozilla thing" is. Netscape is a very well known name so if it gives IE some more competition that's great. Besides, choices are a great thing. To say we don't need this because of Mozilla is just stupid and shallow.
Reviewing 7.2 (Aug 17, 2004)
There is no reason to download this. Just download the latest Mozilla milestone, and grab the AOL crap if you must.
Reviewing 7.1 (Nov 10, 2003)
like mozilla BETTER than IE by far...though Opera is better. AOL is kind of intrusive, but only a nuisance and easily removed (AGAIN) I would use Opera 1st, NS 2nd then IE...but I'm too lazy to care right now as long as my explorer has a good interface which of course follows in my order of preference...Opera is probably the best, but when you look at the fact that NE has just as many feats and Opera is pretty much a clone/fix to NE...either one of the two is a good choice.
Reviewing 7.1 (Aug 21, 2003)
I give it 3 stars because the Uninstaller works well and I like some of the pictures.
Reviewing 7.1 (Jul 27, 2003)

Reviewing 7.1 (Jul 1, 2003)
Bloated, cumbersome, it installs what it wants regardless of your choice, Opera beats the pants off it no contest.
Reviewing 7.1 (Jun 30, 2003)
Netscape all the way! Gotta love this browser who runs smoothly, is effective, and has very many user friendly settings.
Reviewing 7.1 (Jun 30, 2003)
Netscape 7.1 is by far the best that Netscape has put out. Netscape is a superior browser to IE. The only reason, I use IE is for the Windows Update feature. With bundled software (AOL IM, Real One Player, WinAmp, Java, etc...) Netscape is the perfect browser. Version 7.1 proves Netscape committment to a great browsing experience with robust features that are easy to use.
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 27, 2003)
I've got a copy. On my desktops I use Mozilla, but on the notebook I'm using Netscape. I must say that NN7.1 is SOOOOW much FASTER than 7.02...
When I get every week a copy of Mozilla nightly I cannot see the difference so much, but comparing this 2 Netscape is awesome...
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 27, 2003)
This is not Netscape's goof, it is Beta News. 7.1 is not released yet, it leaked out early on 6/26. Please people do not be giving a bunch of bad reviews to a program that is not released. Netscape is going to be built on Mozilla 1.4 and it is not even released yet, therfore that says it all.
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 27, 2003)
Dear Scorched Earth, your comparison doesn't make a lot of sense. Although I don't like Kazaa, it *is* the motor of development on the fasttrack network. Kazaa lite indeed is better, but the people behind it don't develop the programme themselves (although they do a great job ridding it from bloat and spyware + adding some nice third-party tools :-) With Mozilla/Netscape it's the other way around: Mozilla is the "motor" and Netscape = Mozilla + AOL bloat. Guess what I prefer ;-)
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 27, 2003)
In my humble opinion, the reason that "Netscape is not permitting the file to be downloaded" is that it does not exist. I don't see any mention of Netscape 7.1 anywhere.
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 26, 2003)
It would be great if netscape was permitting the file to be downloaded. I'd actually give it a try and share my thoughts and feelings if they were:)
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 26, 2003)
From the end user perspective, the difference between Netscape and Mozilla is similar to the relationship between Kazaa and Kazaa Lite. One is constantly under development, has no bloatware added, and provides plenty of extra features... and the other is Netscape.
Reviewing 7.02 (Jun 26, 2003)
Netscape's a decent browser now, and I prefer it over Mozilla. IE is easily my favorite.

100% usless. Use Mozilla. It's more up-to-date and doesn't come with any AOL garbage.
Reviewing 7.02 (Feb 19, 2003)
Netscape 7 is an improvement, but still, if you want an IE alternative in Windows Mozilla is a no-brainer. Why use Netscape with all it's additional garbage? And it doesn't even use a recent branch of the codebase (uses 1.0x branch instead of latest 1.2 or 1.3)
It's not an awful browser, but you could do much better picking Mozilla or even the lightweight Phoenix.
Reviewing 7.02 (Feb 19, 2003)

I would have never thought I would say this but... it's "ok". The pop-up blocker is nothing special anyone can go to download.com and find a free one. Netscape is not any better than IE so... I'm keeping the IE with an eye on Netscape.

HEY!!!!
Statistics are wrong!! I looked trough the reviews and I though that Netscape could not have 4.7/5. If the user rating is taken from the average of all ratings it should be something like 3.6
If you take latest version, it should be close to 2
Conclusion: The shown average is incorrect
What´s up Betanews?? code problems? advertising problems?
Reviewing 7.0 (Aug 29, 2002)
Netscape 7 is better and more stable than the previous netscape. You can manually download the XPI to install the pop-up blocking that they stripped out of this version (search mozdev.org). If you want a real browser, I'd suggest going for Mozilla 1.1.
Reviewing 7.0 (Aug 29, 2002)
Netscape 7.0 is crashware. Right after I installed it, Windows NT on my system would crash whenever I tried to open ANY program. Only after removing everything Netscape installed did the crashing stop. Stick with Mozilla.

Reviewing 7.0 (Aug 29, 2002)
The purpose of this release is to take advantage of the new feature in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Service Pack 1 (which goes gold this week). You can use the new feature to register Netscape as your default browser (which you have always been able to do, but there were rare situations where IE could potentially take back over). There's really nothing to this feature; you can simply set some registry keys yourself to use it with Netscape 6 or even 4, but I guess Netscape is desparate to prove that they still matter. The sad thing is that they think they're competing with IE but they're really just competing with Mozilla, and the sibling rivalry is only making it harder for either one to compete with IE.
Reviewing 7.0 (Aug 29, 2002)
What's the point of this release? It's based on Mozilla 1.01, which is still not consdered release quality by the Moz. team! (It's on RC2 at the moment)

An unnecessary release. Use Mozilla - it is much better,
conforms to more standards than IE, has many more features,
including ad and popup blocking, and more.
Let NS 4.x rest in peace!
Reviewing 4.8 (Aug 18, 2002)
forgot to mention newer gecko browsers like mozilla and netscape 6: same crap! absolutely disgusting! ok, they use iframes now instead of their stupid layers. but gecko browsers are still absolutely retarded and don't display pages correctly. my grandma knows more about html/css/javascript than the guys who develop this browser.
the worst thing is the speed. mozilla takes 10 sec. to start, netscape 6 15 sec. and the surfing speed! takes a year to open a website, although I am on dsl. Although netscape 4 was slow like hell, the starting of Netscape didn't take much time. guess netscape decided to torture its customers a little more: not only is the browser slow, as far as surfing is concerned, it also takes ages to start the browser.
There are millions of applications developed for the internet, and yet I am absolutely sure there's nothing more useless and worthless than a gecko browser
Reviewing 4.8 (Aug 17, 2002)
Does a good job for the 4.x series. Of course it is not as fast and compliant as Mozilla this is based on a browser that is 5 years old. It is not suppose to take the place of Mozilla. Some people like this series browser. Everyone is so worried about speed, it doesn't matter to me if a page loads in 4 seconds verses 2 seconds. I will admit that all sites do not load properly, but for
the most of the web this browser(4.xseries) is hard to beat.
Reviewing 4.8 (Aug 17, 2002)
LOL, Netscape 4.8? Is this some kind of joke? Better use Mozilla or (if you have an old PC) Opera.

I am a defender of Netscape, I like their style but they really have to improve very much, I like its speed, I like its security, but it stops when something new. When we will have a browser with a translator for all the languages, but a SERIOUS translator, without anything of publicity, quick and easy of configuring, without having to configure each it paginates and to put the languages. For when a browser that he/she murders the popup. For when a browser that is easy to manage the favorite ones. For when a browser with a search option as that of complete google for images, web, groups etc. Believe that they have more than enough the half or but of the channels. The only defect and I believe but it burdens that this 7.0 lack it it is that they moved away the channel of related link, I believe that for a lot of people this it is of a very big help.

Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
Missing features that mozilla has ... For example the ability to block pop up windows. However I did find that if you install netscape 7.0 then install mozilla and deselect the open unrequested windows it also takes effect in netscape 7.0
Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
There's glaciers that go faster than Netscape. Try Opera, it's WAY faster(page loading, application start, ...), more stable and shows nearly all sites perfectly.
I give netscape it's second star only because I prefer it over Internet Exploiter.
Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
OK...not bad. I have always been an IE man anyway, but this looks to be interesting. One question...anyone know of any popup killers that work with this new version of Netscape ?
Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
Rock on Netscape! I think this is great. Surprised to see it here so quick with the 6.2.3 out just last week. This is as good and the most recent Mozilla. I have always liked Netscape and I think the browser wars are really fixing to get going. I just dont't like all the AOL mess you get with the download. Now to get the mail client you have to get the instant messenger, you have no choice. Not to crazy about that. Like everything else though.
Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
Why can't you login to AIM and ICQ simultaneously???
Reviewing 7.0 Preview Release 1 (May 22, 2002)
I think it's great really, perhaps some bloat... but they have FINALLY incorporated mozilla's new features like tabbed browsing and cookie/image-perms. And it's just as fast as mozilla!
As a regular user of mozilla (nightly builds) it's nice to see that they've taken the step and incorporated the best engine.
The thing that nags me is the AOL-bloat (feels like AOL adds led to an otherways light browser), the second thing I think is those dark icons NS7 creates...it actually gives a 'dark' impression (not only 'cause of AOL ;) )
So NS if you read this, lighten up your icons! :)
Haven't tried the NS-ICQ client though, can be interesting
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 15, 2002)
Seems like p0rt1s is some 14 year old kid with a wild imagination. I know no professional would talk like that.
Sorry had to get that off my chest. Netscape needs to get a move on it! I hope they will re-release it once 1.0 comes out for sure, but this is sad.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 15, 2002)
Reasonable browser, unfortunately it's still based on an old Mozilla build. Cannot think of a single reason why one would use this over Mozilla however!
p0rt1s - "only Mozilla and Netscape conform FULLY. And i am a web designer for Fortune 100 companies, I should know." Yes you *SHOULD* know but obviously your knowledge of Netscape/Mozilla is on par with your vocabulary (i.e. 'loadsa', 'yer', 'luvers'). No Mozilla and Netscape are NOT fully compliant.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 15, 2002)
Runs solid on my NT and XP machines. Funny that there is NO mention of this update on the Netscape site, though. Still, the last two "updates" have been based on the same Mozilla version (0.7). Get with it, Netscape! We want a 6.x browser based on at least the 0.98 version! What's the holdup? Other Netscape-branded products taking priority (yeah, right)??
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 15, 2002)
The best version ever. Blows away IE6/IE5/IE whatever...Rock solid/ fast / loadsa features....and BEST OF ALL...Netscape users will never have trojans and stuff infect their systems as easily as those newbies who use Outlook and IE...lols...
To those IE luvers out there, don't cry foul when you have trojans in yer system because of Outlook/IE. And to be perfectly non-biased; IE does a great job with browsing, but it DOES NOT CONFORM TO STANDARDS defined for HTML only Mozilla and Netscape conform FULLY.
And i am a web designer for Fortune 100 companies, I should know.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
Not the best but still good, but they should relaly use Mozilla rc2 (1.0)
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
Mozilla 1.0 RC2 is ready, while Netscape 6.2.3 is still based in the 0.9.4...
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
Bookmarks are still clunky, still loads slowly. All the same things elftyrrell mentions. I kinda' like the sidebar though.
CatBus basically repeated what I said, Mozilla is the basis for Netscape. The Mozilla team make Netscape, AOL adds product branding. IE 6 is much better than Blowzilla/Nutscrape.
Tux0Racer, zip it... zip it good.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
I believe Netscape is slowly getting back in the game. I like this browser, seems stable and fast. I don't believe Netscape will put an ad blocker in like Mozilla, but if you just like using Netscape over Mozilla. All you need to do is download the Mozilla browser and set the ad blocker on it and that will cover it on Netscape also.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
Congratulations on standards compliance 3 years after the browser wars are over (and don't blame Microsoft for Netscape not releasing a browser upgrade for 5 years after the 4.x series). Too little, too late and too unusable until 6.2+.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
P.S.
their tags no longer blink. (and their tags will blink until the end of days)
good to know
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
If you are designing a web site, NN6 is what keeps you up at night. It has poor implementation of HTML, DHTML, and JavaScript standards (what happened to window.status object? ...and don't get me started on those ugly scroll bars). Slow loading, cumbersome, takes up too much screen real estate, etc. etc., etc. Thankfully it is only used by about 5% of web surfers. God help us if AOL decides to use this albatross.
Reviewing 6.2.3 (May 14, 2002)
well lets face it. IE, Netscape and Mozilla are all good browsers, each with their own pros and cons. its down to your own preference on which is more suited to you. personally, opera is my favourite browser.
Reviewing 6.2.2 (Apr 2, 2002)
Well said CatBus, and captainahab: be quite, you don't know what your talking about.
Reviewing 6.2.2 (Mar 30, 2002)
Just so nobody gets confused by CaptainAhab's post, here is the relationship between Mozilla and Netscape:
Mozilla develops its own web browser. Netscape periodically take this open-source code, removes some features, adds some features, and calls it Netscape.
Mozilla keeps developing even while Netscape is busy working on its "branch" of the code. Thus, Mozilla tends to be considerably more capable/stabler/faster than Netscape.
There are other differences than the name and the Mozilla revisions, however. Netscape REMOVES features it doesn't want in its browser (ad-blocking features, for example), and adds features that Mozilla doesn't have (a spellchecker, for example). These aren't minor differences, these are major capabilities used by lots of people.
Thus while Mozilla and Netscape are similar, it would be simply misinformed to say they are the same.
And Mozilla IS better than Netscape.
Reviewing 6.2.2 (Mar 22, 2002)
This release of Netscape is still based on Mozilla 0.9.4 - Mozilla themselves are now 6 releases ahead of Netscape. If you want the latest code for Mozilla / Netscape, get it from www.mozilla.org - that browser is now finally at a stage where it can give IE and Opera a run for their money.
Reviewing 6.2.2 (Mar 21, 2002)
Works, but much slower and clunkier than IE6.
Please repeat this:
Mozilla is Netscape,
Netscape is Mozilla.
The Mozilla team makes Netscape,
AOL just adds product branding.
Netscape=Mozilla
Mozilla=Netscape
No difference.
I know that incremental Mozilla builds are farther along than Nestcape.
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 13, 2001)
I thought this new Netscape was awesome. I had never liked communicator, IE was always my preferred choice. This thing was loaded though. Then, I noticed I couldn't send email or forms. =/. I contacted their support about this. I use a NAT to push data through my network hub. I needed a way to configure my Netscape/Network to get it to work. I sent an email to their tech support, and here is what I got back:
Could be.

Brief Description: I can't submit forms or dl the "activation" files.
Detailed Description:
Everything works fine except I can't
download the activation files or send any

is doing something, but in actuality it
isn't doing anything.
I connect through a NAT to push the files
through the hu and onto the host computer on

but I have too many characters =/. Anyway,
that NAT is most likely the problem.

Can you believe that "Could be"? I immediately uninstalled Netscape. If a product will not supply proper help to people, then the product is not worth your time.
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 7, 2001)
COME ON - why bother with netscape ever again - because of the great name it ones used to be ????
go get mozilla instead.
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 7, 2001)
Netscape has a long way to catch up the innovations they put up years ago. I don't see any innovations in this release, but I remember I don't see IE 2 or IE 3 having anything big either. So we shall see Netscape 8 might have some goof, as for now, stick with Mozilla, it is much better than Netscape in AOL's skin!
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 7, 2001)
for the first time ever im a netscape\mozilla fan many hidden tweaks that makes this the fastest browser not to metion you can eleminate popup advertisement with a hidden tweak ,its now less bugy than IE 6 and way more eye pleasing each release is better and better there defantly back on the right track and more advanced than the other alternative browsers also uses less memory than ie or opera on my system ***** +.
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 7, 2001)
It's looking good, but why on earth would you download Netscape? It's just a branded & bogged down version of Mozilla. Go to mozilla.org and get that instead - updated more frequently as well.
Reviewing 6.2.1 (Dec 7, 2001)
I hate AOL, and everything they touch. They are kill what could have been the best browser on-line with "I'm AOL" stuff and trying to take control of my computer. Installing anything from AOL would require an re-build of my PC to remove the AOL stuff. AOL is not the internet. I hope they do not get control of ATT Broadband. Microsoft isn't the problem, but they would like us to believe that stuff.
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 11, 2001)
I feel Netscape has to look for other ways to retake the browser market .Updating Communicator does nothing much.
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 10, 2001)
NS 4.x doesn't support all new html/script/css stuff , but works very well & fast & stable. Ofcuz Mozilla/NS6/IE6 are better , but it's good to see Netscape keep the 4.x serie up-to-date (bug fixes , security problems , ...). NS 4.x can still be used by people are slow pc's &co.
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 9, 2001)
To everyone saying "Why aren't they working on Netscape 6?", ahem: http://www.mozilla.org. Netscape 6 is being worked on every hour of every day, by both Netscape employees and non Netscape employees alike. Netscape Communicator is a dead end, however that does not mean you don't fix security holes, major bugs, etc. It's called being a good company. Car dealers don't stop fixing '01 models just because the '02 models are in, do they?
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 9, 2001)
Decent product, yet outdated. Netscape hasn't said they left the browser industry, they said that they're diversifying and moving into other things (read: Netcenter). The only reason the 4.x series is being updated is because corporate customers request bug fixes and updates. In fact Netscape engineers don't even work on the 4.x series anymore; it's all iPlanet now.
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 9, 2001)
I agree with the guy below me. 4.x is old and people have to learn to move on. Netscape makes good browsers... however... I have reason to believe AOL probably smuggled more of their icons, services, and promotions into the new version like they've been doing.
Reviewing 4.79 (Nov 9, 2001)
Hmm ... Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Netscape officially announce that they were not going to participate in the "browser war" and shut down their browser for about 6-8 months ago? Anyway, Netscape is unfortunatley since long out of business, let's bury the crap and move on. They once were my heroes, but now ...
Reviewing 6.2 (Oct 30, 2001)
Netscape 6.2 is incredible. Bloatware? Just remove the stuff you dont like. Its got standards compliance, and - for the millions of people who use AIM to chat, the integrated side bar AIM is much improved. Installation was quick, start up for me took under 5 seconds and I only have 128 MB of ram (pretty much standard now).
Anyone who says that AOL is ruining this product can just eat it. Mozilla gets better and better. I already consider it a superior product to IE. Its attractive, loads quick, has more utility, the list goes on and on. Any aol-integration can be removed by anyone with an IQ over 7 - and that which is automatically installed is neither annoying nor intrusive. In fact, the buddy list isnt even automatically included in the sidebar (which has bookmarks, search engine, and history - very very useful).
I think Netscape and Mozilla have a great thing going on. Keep it up. I cant wait till Mozilla 1.0 and NS 6.5 - its gonna be great!

Reviewing 6.1 (Oct 8, 2001)
The browser seems to do a good job. The AOL ads, however, I could do without. I could also do with out the option to install AIM and Winamp. It's total ****ing s*** that AOL/Time Warner is trying to push off its other products through Netscape. The installation forces you to have like 10 AOL icons, none of them which I want. I hate AOL!!! I will use it if I feel, but I don't want to be bothered about it. It's the same way for Winamp and for Instant Messenger. I in fact already have the products, and it's extra work for me to uncheck the boxes for installing those products. They do not need to come with Netscape, and provide no additional functionality to the program.
Though to some the swearing I did above cannot be justified, my only possible reaction to such foul behavior is foul language.
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 15, 2001)
Wow, this is MUCH better than 6.0. It also seems to be leaning towards the Internet Explorer HTML views with tables and links. I almost prefer this over Netscape 4. Of course, I had to remove all of the Sidebar stuff and so on, but it's a good one.
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 12, 2001)
** Can we say, "BLOATWARE" ** My Point? Who gives a rat's patootie about 'cool skins' and 'sidebars' when the main program's functions don't do what they're supposed to do? What good is a browser that only displays SOME webpages correctly? That's why I don't use Opera, -- sure it's fast, but it really screws up a page layout when it encounters a small glitch in someone's coding. To me, it's like having a really really fancy car with electric everything, but the thing will only go on perfect roads without breaking down...not much use in normal everyday settings. Heck, I used to curse IE (in the 4.0 days) and would NEVER use it for the same reasons I will NEVER use Netgoat until they get it right. You can keep it if you like it, I prefer IE and Netcaptor. If you haven't tried Netcaptor, DO. C-Ya.
BTW, screen res is at 1024x768 on a 17" monitor. I like my viewing area a lot more than I like sidebars and toolbars.
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 10, 2001)
Netscape will never be as good as IE, it even have problems using Localized websites, for example, HEBREW.
If you think IE was bad, try using IE6, it's really great (at least when it's in XP).
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 9, 2001)
I like Netscape 6 and Mozilla (especially the mail features) but I've to admit that it's an incredible heavy browser (try it on a celeron 400/64Mb based machine!). Even with a faster computer, it takes a *long* time to launch.
... it's mainly the reason what I'm using usually IE
Another reason is that I'm using netcaptor (with very very good features) ... and netcaptor exists only for IE!
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 9, 2001)
this ain't bad. but it is sluggish at times.
i am waiting for netscape 7. i bet they make that perfectly.
remember how awful 2.0 was?? 3.0 was a vast improvement.
i am dating myself here
bye
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 8, 2001)
This product is really good if you have a faster computer (minimum config a faster Pentium 2). With Win2000 and a P3 it's really good. Also companies are creating very good Sidebar Tabs (I love this feature).
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 8, 2001)
People who diss 6.1 claiming it's just a tweaked 6.0 obviously haven't tried it. It's an extremely good browser that is fast and stable. Give it a spin, or its stable mate Mozilla. Other points in its favour are the small download size and the fact it doesn't replace half of your OS when you install a new version.
Both NS 6.1 and Moz 0.9.3 are kick a** browsers, easily comparable to IE and *much* better at rendering content than Opera.
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 8, 2001)
AOL keeps killing it. Why do they add all that garbage and AOL crap. Program is forced to take forever to load and then it crashes. Mozilla is better. I have a netscape mail account since god-only-knows when. Now it let's me login via netscape.com but refuses to let me activate netscape using that account. Does anybody have a clue why?
My review, stick to ie or opera.
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 8, 2001)
6.1 will not play ASF or ASX files from a web page. All I get is garbage characters displayed when I click on an ASF file link. IE plays ASF and ASX files correctly. Looks like someone FORGOT to include Microsoft's Media MIME types in Netscape 6.1. What an oversight!
Reviewing 6.1 (Aug 8, 2001)
It's not horribly bad or anything, but it still feels slow and quirky compared to MSIE. Decent enough, but IE is still better.
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Aug 6, 2001)
I like it (exspecially with the SkyPilot Theme).
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Aug 6, 2001)
I personally love the features in Netscape 6.1 .... I'm still waiting for a build based on Moz 093, and there are some definite improvements that can me made in the Mail/News for Multiple accounts, but otherwise its great ..
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Aug 6, 2001)
IE6 runs circles around it. Even Opera makes it look already old and obsolete.
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Aug 6, 2001)
Its a fine piece of software but there is nothing to recommend it over IE. The average user has no reason to ever download this program. Bit of a shame too, Netscape was once the "must have" browser.
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Aug 6, 2001)
Looks great.. Starts a little slow though... IE is still the best.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 29, 2001)
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/english/
=> For those still using Communicator but who don't want to download the bloatware from the main site, go here, select the version you want and download the executable from "base_install" dir which just has communicator without any of those extras. It's about 17mb verses the 25mb or so download of bundled piece of s*** off the main site.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
O well, maybe the netscape guys should make a decent operating system for our computers and intergrate their communicator. That way it wouldn't be such a drag installing this evergrowing, overcommercialized download.
Anyway you bloody slice it, like this, netscape is in a giant no-shape!!!
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
This utility is entirely useless. Why? Read Inside Windows 2000 by Solomon and Russinovich! Only thing this util can do is significantly slow down PC, no matter how much RAM you have, and what you do.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
Okay, well, honestly... What do you expect from a company that is owned by AOL? I've seen every good piece of software suffer once AOL takes over. I.E. Netscape, ICQ, and let's see if Time Warner goes out of Business.. *shrugs* who knows...
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
Netscape did NOT "invent" most of the internet standards, W3C did.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
(they don't make IE for BeOS. You can't compare them. Shhh...)
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
I will always use something from Netscape way before I consider IE. Netscape invented most internet standards. Microsoft just copied them like always. I do agree that that Crazy 6.x needs to be completed NOW. They need to stop playing around.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
They're still working on this ancient relic? Granted, it's more solid than Netscape 6.x/Mozilla but you'd think they'd want to put all their energy into actually finishing that, seeing as it is LOOOOONG overdue.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
WOW !! Netscape is really a great browser.....just kidding. I hope it hangs around, otherwise Microsoft might start charging for IE.
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 20, 2001)
Is there anyone out there still using this? Why don't the Netscape engineers go and do something useful, like working on Netscape 6?
Reviewing 4.78 (Jul 19, 2001)
Please note that this only kills POP UP ads, not all banner advertisements. I've seen and used better programs but this one is still effective. It takes a while to get used to adding a new window to your Block List, but overall, if you really hate Pop Up ad's, download this program by all means.
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Jun 15, 2001)
This thing is still as buggy as ever. For example it has real problems on sites using O'Reilly Webboard. No other browsers do.
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Jun 14, 2001)
Let's just remember who makes mozilla... Mostly netscape developers.
If i have 2 products of the same kind and almost same developers/code, i choose the open source one instead of the commercial one.
So, with netscape you are stuck until next version, instead with mozilla you can download the newest release on a DAILY basis and check if the bug that annoys you has been fixed (you can even fix it yourself and contribute to the proyect)
Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Jun 14, 2001)
Completely pointless to get ANY new version of Netscape. Just got to Mozilla.org and get the real thing, always a step ahead of the bloated Netscape branding!

If you're a webdeveloper you should test your pages with Amaya. The ONLY browser that is 100% compliant with all W3C specs (they develop it). It's not a pretty browser (but you shouldn't use it as your primary browser) but VERY small (about 5meg)
Check it out!

Reviewing 6.1 Preview Release 1 (Jun 13, 2001)
IE doesn't take up nearly that much space on my machine... as a web developer, my major issue with netscape has been their complete noncompliance with W3C standards. Sure IE doesn't always comply, but in those cases, it either adds on or makes things easier for the developer. It never falls short of important W3C standards. Trust me, I develop for the web as a job, and one of my tasks is making beautiful and elegant code that works superbly under IE and trying to hack it to make it work under netscape. I have not tried netscape 6, but do not be so quick to knock IE down, just because it is a MS product. It is the product of choice for developers.

NN 4.77 is just a minor release before NN 6.5 is out. 6.5 will be a real 6.0 release! A big step forward.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 6, 2001)
Is this all you people do, b**** about a decent product?
Whine, whine, and whine.. thats all I ever see. There isnt a damn thing wrong with Netscape.. sure they're owned now by AOL... at least i can get the thing to run better than microsofts browser.
Come.. on.. give BetaNews a break.. do you think you really can do a better job of keeping up on everything? No.. i didnt think so.. So until you do.. maybe you should keep your criticisms to yourself. Cause many of us are just tired of hearing it.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 6, 2001)
Mr. Blues please re-read the comments and you'll notice that the headings point to reviews of Netscape 6.0 and that the dates are inconsistent with the release of 4.77. Why? Because Betanews reuses the same section for a product anytime a new version is posted. So by following the headers/titles of the posts you can see what version/article the poster is responding to.
If I could give NS a negative score I would. 4.x is significantly slower than IE or Opera, it has relatively little standards compliance (compared to IE/Opera) and given the release of NS 6 it should be a dead version with no updates needing to be made. Unfortunately NS/AOL decided to jump the damn gun a little on releasing NS6 before it was fully compliant and thoroughly debugged and so now it too has gotten negative reviews that it may not be able to recover from. NS 6 is still buggy, slow, and bloated even more than IE. NS 4 should just be dead but AOL/NS can't seem to make a product that pulls diehard Communicator fans away from the 4.x version so that keep having to update it. What a sad state of affairs.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 5, 2001)
AOL has a history of making a good product go BAD after they get their hands on it. Netscape and ICQ have both fallen victum to AOL. I am starting to wonder if Microsoft deserves applause for keeping their browser ahead of the rest (Opera is still the best for now though).
AOL will eventually fall victum to its own undoing, once PC and internet newbies come to see that AOL products are a BAD choice and there are much better products out there.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 5, 2001)
I like Opera. It's fast and clean. These other two ( Netscape & IE5.5 and 6.0) are bloated and too full of debts to the system to be worth the trouble or hard drive space not to mention memory.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 5, 2001)
I have nothing to complain about 4.77. It's been stable without any crashes.
Obviously, there are lot of people who can't read because they reviewed Netscape 6.01.
Reviewing 6.01 (Apr 4, 2001)
I am a fully converted IE user, who used to be both. No more, though. Netscape has made a statement by deciding to hang on to and update its previous browser suite months after releasing version 6.0. Just like its brother, 4.x, Netscape 6.x is a slow-loading, memory/resource-hogging, piece of crap software. IE is not perfect, but Netscape will never get close at the rate it's currently going. Internet Explorer is a solid application, and because of its importance, it's best left integrated with the operating system. If AOL wan't rich like Microsoft, I'm sure Netscape would be out of existence.

Reviewing 6.01 (Mar 8, 2001)
Before I start, I would like to thank everyone who reviewed 6.0 first and kept ME from d/ling it. Fisrt the good, them the bad; Kudos to Netscape for E X C E L E N T cookie management and security features! Well, I'm afraid that's it for the good. Now the bad. Its hard to imagine that anyone could top M/S in the memory hog department (ok, its not bad when its minimized, but its really tough to surf with it minimized). For those of you wondering why it acts sluggishly... I have 2 windows open and its using (you might want to sit down) 56MEGS ram and 72MEGS V-ram (I'm runnig winNT so I can see this stuff)! Luckily I've got ~300 megs ram. More bad news, many simple things just don't work, and the update to 6.01 has without a doubt made things WORSE! Forget using the composer, it has some nice features, but again they don't all seem to work. I will keep using 4.76 and watch for future revisions. I think by v.8 or 9most of the kinks will be worked out. I really long for the days when they (all s/w companies) waited till the bugs were worked out. (blame it on marketing I guess.) Reviewing 6.01 (Mar 3, 2001)
This 6.0 version is a real DUD! I didn't have problems downloading the Program AFTER I downloaded the entire Setup. But after I installed it, this program really sucked the resources dry on my PC. (K6 400 mhz./128megs ram/16mb Vodoo3) I tried disabling everything that I could and it still took FOREVER to load. Just trying to access the bookmarks required an exercise in patience. (And the bookmarks function of the program is the main reason that I always prefer Netscape to Explorers clumsy bookmark function) It was not able to access the notes that I had saved under my old bookmarks. I couldn't get it off my hard drive fast enough. Giving this version of Netscape a 1 is too kind; I give it a double zero. Netscape 4.7 went right back on the old hard drive….for now.(With Explorer as a backup)
Reviewing 6.01 (Mar 2, 2001)
I am the network administrator for a small non-profit organization with a LAN and a shared 56K connection to the web. I have been a Netscape devotee since version 2.01, but I have never had so many problems as I am having now. First there was version 6.0 and now this "improved" 6.01. Thus far I see no sign that anything is being done to address the mountains of glitches and bugs plaguing what is obviously a beta release and not a finished product.
In my home I was upset by the new Navigator's problems with web browsing. Java applets and javascripts did not always work -- some not at all, others just intermittently. I liked and found useful the "What's Related" button on 4.x's task bar. It has been left off of version 6.x. I don't think it liked the drivers for my cable modem either.
I do like the look of the new browser, but I was unimpressed with the "skins" concept back when NeoPlanet started using them. The novelty wears off real fast. I am unwilling to give up functionality for a cool look.
Additionally, the new Netscape Mail did not seem to get along well with Norton Internet Security, especially since I have email scanning enabled. It would not retrieve mail until I disabled it.
I have now uninstalled version 6 at home. Fortunately I still had version 4.76 so I am able to continue using it. Despite its stability problems, the older version was a much more powerful tool than this most recent.
I do still have the newest version on my workstation at the office where it is being "tested", but its mail client is so seriously flawed that a switch from Netscape to Eudora seems assured.
Netscape 6 Mail consistently 'jams' on downloading. It will give every appearance of being hard at work, but on one particular message it will hang, seemingly unable to squeeze it down out of cyberspace. I do not have this problem with either the 4.x version or with Eudora. It seems to be associated with messages that have been forwarded. I haven't a clue why. That is just an observation.
Netscape 6 does not automatically poll for new mail at launch. I have set it to poll for new mail every three minutes, but unless I click "Get Mail" immediately after launching the program it does not follow through and do this on its own.
Netscape 6 does not notify me when new mail is received. I am using this in an office environment. I want to be notified as soon as a message arrives. I do not want to have to go to the Mail window and check every so often to make sure I am not missing something.
Even creating new messages is fraught with problems. I have had messages refuse to wrap text as I was typing them. I have had font sizes randomly change on me so that parts were in ultra fine variable width print and the rest in 12 point Courier. I know of no setting I had touched to make this change.
Finally, despite its much vaunted password recognition list it periodically "forgets" the password to my email account meaning I must re-enter it and once again re-check the 'remember this password' box under preferences.
I might even opt to keep my office on Netscape version 4.76, were it not for the problem of the blank email messages we keep receiving. They show up fine in Eudora, and even in Netscape 6, but not in version Netscape 4.76. Some come from large offices where I know they are using Outlook as their mail client. Others come from an event management service called Cvent (www.cvent.com) that uses some sort of web-based tool. I really do not like having to report to my Executive Director that she must get used to viewing the "Page Source" in order to figure out what foundation donors and colleagues from the for-profit world are telling her.
And then there is the tendency for the entire computer to lock up if Netscape 6 is left up and running for any length of time. This program is a memory hog. I have a Dell P3 with 64 megs of RAM, but it seems like that may not be enough. Or the fact that I cannot use Smart Update since I am consistently told that I am using a "Mozilla" browser that does not support Smart Update, (apparently Smart Update does not recognize the "Netbusiness version") and the various error messages that pop up for websites with java applets, some of which work while others do not. Filing bookmarks was simple and easy to do in the 4.x browsers. Version 6 seems to be trying to ape IE5's 'favorites' and does not let me drag web addresses into specific folders or even use the now missing "file bookmark" option. And why can I not get rid of the imported IE Favorites Folder? I have never used IE. I have no favorites in it. I delete this utterly useless folder from my bookmarks file and the damn thing comes back. I see no point to it.
Finally, from the perspective of an administrator who deals with limited bandwidth and even more limited time, I liked the fact that Netscape 4.x could be downloaded as one file. I simply loaded it into a folder on my server and when an upgrade came out or I had to add a new workstation to my LAN I would go in and install it from there. Simplicity appeals to me. Netscape 6 installs itself by downloading a setup file, which then supervises and organizes the subsequent downloading of 20+ more files of various sizes. If I were to convert this office to version 6.x I would need to download a separate installation from Netscape for each workstation -- or buy it on CD each time a new version comes out -- or perhaps just say to heck with it, and let everyone run with older versions until I finally get a few days free to work on it. This is not a good situation.
Netscape, please release version 6.5 soon. Even more importantly, please restore the functionality of version 4. Version 6 is by far the inferior, and I do not want to trade down when I "upgrade".
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 10, 2001)
I decided to give 6.01 a shot... My advice to Netscape is very simple...stick with creating a portal, thats all you're even remotely good at anymore. The code is bloated, buggy, slow, and unstable. Netscape is proving it's spot in the 21st Century, the Net's Jester.
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 10, 2001)
This program is slow!?!?! I couldn't believe it. it takes (I clocked it!!!) 23 seconds to download and to end in a strange internal error, on my amd k6-2 500mhz with 192mb and a Geforce DDR 32mb. I mean what did they thought? We're gonna make a piece of crap? I mean they couldn't overlook the fact that it is awefully slow?!! can they???
the only plus is that the skins are cool but that's all!!!The pages don't even load correctly. And can somebody explain the 'communicator' in netscape?
I just really hope people aren't gonna think that their PIII/AMD or 800+ mhz or equivalent isn't fast enough, so they will buy a new one. Cause that makes the CPU bakery very happy for foul reason.
Stay away from this program i'm sorry to say
IE is much faster unfortunately.
This program just looks like M$ WMplayer 7. Same cons!!!!!
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 10, 2001)
I can remember the days, back in 1995 - 6 plus or minus, when I would jump at the chance to get a new copy of Netscape browser. However as time went on, the team seemed to shoot themselves in the foot over and over again. I sent a message complaining about a version of the browser and they responded in kind I didn't know what I was talking about. Hmmmmmmm, Micrososft kicked your a** didn't they. What goes around comes around. For the good of all of us take that thing and lock it away on AOL where it belongs. From a guy who gives everybody a fair shot,

Very many days late and way too many dollars short. Why bother? A good idea implemented poorly. Maybe by 7.0...
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 9, 2001)
I think I'm giving it one star too many. It is fat and ugly. That is, the download is huge and it is too cluttered.
It is also very slow, to the point of disappointing.
For those of you who have mentioned that the reason IE is so small is because it is tightly integrated, nice try! The reason why IE is relatively because it harnesses the power of available controls and functionality (which is what every application written for a specific platform should aspire to do) provided with the OS. I will not even mention the bad rendering and incompatibility with HTML in this review.
The biggest disappointment though is that they decided to DROP DDE SUPPORT! Very bad, inconsiderate and risky move: so much for backward compatibility!
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 9, 2001)
SVEDBURG, we are all rating Netscape 6.01 here, yet all of your links to reviews are dated in December (most 12/14) when it was 6.0.
Furthermore, the LA Times writer made some statements that discredit him, such as "Netscape 6's problems begin with its size: This Web bruiser is a 28-megabyte download, compared with 7 MB for Internet Explorer 5. Once installed, Netscape 6 requires about 30 MB of hard drive space; IE 5 uses about 17 MB."
Which product is tightly integrated with Microsoft's OS? Internet Explorer is, of course. Therefore, the download would be smaller.
My comment isn't intended to be a rip on you or even directed at you, but I'm using you as an example to the rest of the reviewers. Please be fair when rating programs and citing others' reviews. This board isn't meant to be one big b**** session. Let's offer some constructive criticism or even a little bashing is okay, but have your facts straight and give the programs a fair assessment.
I think 6.01 is an improvement over 6.0, but there is more work to be done, that is for sure, and I believe they are on the right track.
Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 9, 2001)
Netscape 6.01 has taken some pretty big steps since 6. Being a student at UNC Chapel Hill, the use of certain internet based services (http://studentcentral.unc.edu) is very important. These were simply inaccessible in the preview releases and 6.0 version of NS. This one works much better, and I am very impressed.

Reviewing 6.01 (Feb 8, 2001)
Come on... Anyone who thinks that skins are a Cool Thing(TM) probably likes *looking* at their app more than *using* it. In my experience, skins have always been detrimental to a software's performance (then again, it could just be my comp). I give Netscape credit for moving to standards compliancy. New features can be nice, but when you have enough time to leave the room and get something to drink while it loads... Not being integrated into the OS is not a very good excuse. Like someone said earlier, Opera beats even IE. Needing a password? What the hell is that?? I used to use Netscape only; wouldn't even look at IE. It took IE 5 (and a constantly crashing Netscape 4.7x) for me to finally switch. I don't see me going back anytime soon.

It is good enuff... if you have experience in hex/xul editing :)
IMO loadup time is so long because of stupid disablable 'activation' crap and xul parsing
it loads in approx 7 seconds on c333/64M with standard interface but you can write your own without all of those annoying toolbars and side/search panels - simple, clean and effective.
...still waiting for mozilla to get rid of boogs and leave beta stages tho
cmon people! rub your hands and learn xul! when mozilla will be out you'll make your own distributions of it! (j/k) :)

Is standards compliance means having to put up with this memory hog, screw standards.
IE browser doesen't look special but its fast and the pages look good. Netscape however
looks great but its a fat assed slow app, and some pages look all wrong.
What the hell were they thinking?
I was however pleasantly surprised to see how fast it uninstalls.

After using both an inital beta of Internet Explorer 6.0 in Windows Whistler, I found it to be more stable and faster than Netscape 6.0 on that same platform.
Just to be fair I went ahead and installed both my beta build of IE6 and my final release copy of NS6 on my Windows 2000 Professional machine and experianced the same results.
In short: Navigator is Dead, Long live Explorer.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 17, 2000)
They fixed the RAM bug which caused Previev 3 to consume up to 55 MB of RAM and more. Now N6 takes way about 25 MB RAM. Much better, but still twice as much as IE 5.5 SP1. However, give N6 a try. It is not very fast, if you compare it to IE 5.5. But on the other hand it is smoother, easier and nice. But beware of a major bug: You cannot use proxy configuration scripts. They will not work with N6. It was one of the first new bugs discovered. Because this bug is a really awful one and because N6 is still slower than IE 5.5 I give it only a 2.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 16, 2000)
So what if N6 is standards-compliant? Who follows standards anyway? I think most web designers have been intentionally authoring their web pages for IE, especially if they are using Frontpage; most WYSYWYG editors also use the IE control. I have been using both browsers since their first versions, and I used to favour NS until IE4 came out. I switched to IE mainly because it opened so much faster, and because NS used to crash so often. I have tried the N6 Final, and have found it to be even slower than all previous versions of NS (Opera is not integrated into the OS, and does not use the IE control, yet it opens even faster than IE); also, N6 does not seem to import MIME types from the registry, like previous versions did (am I right?), and will always prompt you when you click a file type; the option to "always use this app to open this file type" is always greyed out(?). N6 does not properly support Arabic text in web pages, IE does...

The preview release 3 was an excellent browser. I don't know why but they seem to have change something in the final release that makes the browser NON-COMPLIANT to a couple of thing that it was in the PR3. I'm happy with PR3 and do not recommend to install the final release.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 16, 2000)
I like it alot, works great. I miss afew functions from the old Netscape though, shift+click=open link in new window and ctrl+click=save link (to file). As stated before, Netscape isn't integrated in the windows shell and therefor take longer to load and take "more" memmory than IE.

"learn to accept change"
- Maybe you should realize that this is change. A standards compliant browser. You made a huge error in your statement showing exactly how little you know. You said that NS6 does not show pages correctly that IE5.5 or whatever does. That is like calling a Ph.D. in English stupid because he cannot interpret your thick, southern, slang accent and words that dont even exist. IE and Netscape 4.0 Browsers are simply not standards compliant.
And should we just all worship IE now regardless of what Netscape or other companies put out? The browser competition, like all other competition, is iterated. Sure, Netscape arguably lost the 4.0 battle (if i built a browser into the number 1 OS I could do it too), but that does not mean that they lose the next battle by default.
Ill be polite and just scrap your humorous comparison of NS6 to disney as ignorance rather than incompetance. (chose not to know rather than incapable of knowing).

Easy installation with no problems. Chat, email, phone integration. Choice of sidebar content along with many other features. It is a little bloated since NS6 has so much to offer but overall I'm pleasantly surprised.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 15, 2000)
I liked teh new features very much; however I've noticed that the new version uses about twice as much memory as Communicator 4.76 under Win2000. The fact that one can use different profiles for each news server is a pretty good feature, along with availability (finaly) of Java2 and several changes one can notice. Personally I disliked the "modern" skin but one can use the "classic" one which is just fine. I did have problems which I couldn't get around such as: Clicking in an URL in Messenger didn't get the browser to go to that page. Right-clicking and selecting open in new window brought a blank window and after that no URL was accepted.
I'll play a little more with v6.0 throughout the weekend but unless that I find some work around for this and a few other issues which have arisen I'll stick with 4.76 a little longer. It is positive to see a good set of features being available and a bug-fix release would make it a pretty good choice with no doubt. The issues above happened in a Dual PIII 500 with 384MB ECC memory under Win2000. JVc.

NS 6.0 works great on all the platforms I tried it on. Yes, it has some flaws, but it is by far the best renderer I've seen for any browser. It also has the added bonus that you can install (and uninstall) it without ripping out half of your operating system or rebooting.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 14, 2000)
Quite possibly the biggest cyber-disapointment ever. 4.75 is SO much
better it's hard to believe they even put this thing out. I ran the beta
pr3 for a while, and figured they would see the obvious problems and
have them fixed in the final release. It's really quite sad to witness the
utter demise of the once proud netscape. Quite sad indeed.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 14, 2000)
I don't understand so many you criticize toward this version 6.0, I really liked it, the load is similar to IE or but quick, better presentation and mainly completely functional. Of course they have to improve some thing, but I believe that it is much better than IE. Every time that comes out a version of any Browser you criticize them they are the same ones that it doesn't load quick etc, it was maybe thought that it can be of our servant so much slowness.

Velocity is right... if you cut out the Java crap (you can also do so from the advanced preferences) it takes up A LOT less memory. About 10MB with the standard skin. It beats me why they didn't use Windows' built in Java support for the Win32 version - maybe because of the childish war between browsers [shrug]. Anyway, just disable it... the only time you tend to need it is for slow websites that overuse it. You can always enable it again if it's truly needed.
The Sky Pilot theme absolutely ROCKS, I suggest downloading that as soon as you install! It does make Netscape take up 5MB more, but wow it's worth it.
Evidently, RAM size can be drastically reduced by using (or creating) as simple a skin/theme as possible.

I downloaded nightly builds of mozilla for quite a long time, if you know the histroy behind it, it was released too soon, but the developers did not want to, it was AOL who pushed it out the door. For those of you who like to complain about NS's RAM requirements as compared to IE's:
1. IE is INTEGRATED into Windows 98/Me
2. IE is ALREADY partially loaded when you boot up the OS.
3. You computer boots SLOWER as a result of that.
4. IE is obviously faster in loading and seems to use up less RAM as a SEPARATE program because of the above.
5. Netscape is NOT INTEGRATED into the OS.
6. None of its loading time/RAM requirements are HIDDEN behind the OS's.
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 14, 2000)
Looks and runs a lot better now. The problem is the bloody 30 megs of ram it eats up on my system. Thats just not acceptable.
Interface is a lot better though. When I went to the "Theme Park" I wasn't able to import themes, however this might be somehow related to my proxy server. It asks if I want to use that theme, opens the ftp window, and closes after a second or two. One annoyance is the URL address bar. When I put my cursor there it should highlight the text so I can just type. I know thats a small thing, but its very annoying to have to manually highlight the text.
Also, why does the java console by default run in the system tray? Why would the average user need to see that?
And finally, why is there still no feature to auto-complete URLs I type in the address bar? I'm lazy damnit.
I wouldn't call this a "Final" if I were Netscape. There's still work to be done.

sorry but as I write this (in NS6) its showing up in win2k task manager to be using 42,6mb of my system memory compared to the 7.2mb iexplore.exe (explorer 5.5 sp1) is using. I'm un-installing this monstrosity after I submit this form. I do have 256mb of physical RAM but thats no excuse to suck it all up in one gulp.. When I build my brothers new computer, it will have an initial 64mb and will be using IE 5.5 not Netscape, the proof is there to see my friends..
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 14, 2000)
The User interface is nice and the engine is very fast. But Netscape please don't release those kind of products, it crashes all the time, take more memory than any other task, is very slow (PIII 650 Mhz). I have never seen any product so buggy in my life (except alpha versions ...). Do something.

Simply, DO NOT DOWNLOAD!
It nice, yes... but the damn thing sucks up memory and fast, i've got a fine pc, (P3 600mhz with 128ram) ... and i've opened only 3 windows of netscape... its a whole waste of memory went down to the toilet, has lowsy features, IE has much better stuff, however, I recommend to get or stick with IE5.1 (NOT 5.5 , cause its one big bug), and damn, Why do all new version of web browsers have to be so cr*ppy ?
Reviewing 6.0 Final (Nov 14, 2000)
Are you on crack or something you few that says this pile of sh-t is good? Its near worthless and a big shame for Netscape. Is sloooow and chunky, must of the pages it tries to display looks like crap and if there are some JavaScript it wont work. The mailer is also slooow and crap compared to the speed demon O.E. How can any company release this??

Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Nov 10, 2000)
Nice preview but I cannot and do not want to use it. It consumes up to 55 MB RAM on my Windows 2000 192 MB RAM system. My system ended up with only 13 MB RAM left before I escaped Netscape. My IE 5.5 SP1 only needs 12 MB RAM. So, you see the difference. Netscape has to fix this RAM bug before I will use it again.

if netscape is smart they won't release the final version. if they do, their "it's just a preview edition" excuses won't work anymore. do you people seriously think that this p.o.s. is going to evolve enough to compete with IE? AOL and Microsoft competing for browser supremacy, it's a sad day in the computer world
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Oct 7, 2000)
Excellent job, nice interface, and skinnning too (although, at this point, only two are available: Skinz.Org doesn't yet feature Netscape 6, but let's hope that changes with the final release)
Gripes:
1: Bookmark issues. There are several, but primarily:
A: "My SideBar" has a Bookmark" tab that apparently functions similarly to "Blink" but, unlike "Blink", the site was unable to import my resident bookmarks. I like the idea, but Netscape needs to learn some lessons from the good folks at "Blink"
B: Personal Toolbar: Why in the world can't I drag the icon from the address window onto the "Personal Toolbar" and thus include that site on the toolbar? Furthermore, figuring out how to place sites/folders on the toolbar is not ver intuitive. This feature definitely needs some polishing.
2. Access problems: Although Netscape 6 is certainly not as limited in this regard as, say, some betas of Opera, it still has problems. I have repeated difficulty accessing Ebay pages with 'cgi' in the address: a Netscape pop-up appears stating that it can't handle that particular filetype, and asks me if I would like to download it. This doesn't seem to happen all of the time, but occurs more often than not. However, I experience no difficulty when accessing my online financial accounts, so security compatibility seems to be working fine (which, I believe, was one of Opera's problems prior to it's final release)
I hope that these issueas are resolved in the Final: I'm one of those that actually bought NS 4 years ago, and began my Internet experience in '95 as a Netscape user. I recall that the ONLY reason I switched to IE was that NS was incapable of copying/pasting webpage content from the right click pop-up. As soon as NS incorporated that feature I went back to it. In recent years I've dabbled with Tabbed browsers like NetCaptor and Opera, both excellent products.
Good to see that NS is back on track, albeit a little late.

Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Oct 1, 2000)
Netscape 6 is so vastly superior to netscape 4.x that they cann't really be considered the same product. I personally think netscape 6 is great. It runs well, loads pages fast, looks pretty cool, and supports cascading style sheets and whatnot. The only problem is its a year later. IE 5 has been doing everything that netscape 6 does for ages now. I stopped using netscape even though I hate m$ because netscape 4 simply could not compete. Netscape 6 is still not as good as ie, but its only a preview, so obviously it has room for improvement. As it is now, it can't possibly hope to take over ie from me (kmeleon is looking good though)

I've always found IE has the F**ked up way of displaying pages, due to microsoft having to do every hing its own special way. Its far easier getting a web page looking just right in netscape than it is in IE.
Hmmm. I think most of these post have little to do with the software more like I HATE/LOVE Microsoft posts, And do you really think microsoft would bother to develope IE further if it wasnt a little competition?
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Oct 1, 2000)
I agree, Netscape 6 is good. All the other Netscapes were hassles, coming from a web designer. I perfected masterpiece websites in Internet Explorer with it's so called "common sense" technology. When the moment came to compatibility with Netscape, it was no longer a Masterpiece because of all the downgrading modifications I had to make. Netscape 6 is practically like the IE engine it's perfect. Although I like PR1's better. They've done some tweaking in PR2 that takes it back to the old engine and I have yet to see PR3. It's best to leave the engine as it is, it's perfect now, don't change it Netscape! hehe, like they'll be reading this.... Oh well.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Oct 1, 2000)
I find it sad that today's software is chosen based more on politics than merit.
Mozilla M18/Netscape PR3 is a fantastic piece of software and is now the only browser I use. Why? Because of its feature set and the fact that, yes, it *is* faster than IE. This is coming from someone who used to swear by IE.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 3 (Oct 1, 2000)
90% of you all you are stupid morons! This is a pre-release. Sure Netscape is bloated, but thats not what is being developed here. The main focus of these pre-releases/milestones/nightly builds is to get the mozilla/gecko stuff running perfectly. IE runs their web standards so screwed up its unbelievable. but this stuff written by coders around the world since it is mildly open sourced it makes it more stable and more usable. sure netscape is taking advantage of this and this technology since it is opensourced will be implemented into other browsers that have less bloat in them....

I personally love Netscape 6. The long program load up time is quickly paid off by quick page loads, and (for the first time ever) a useful sidebar because it can so easily be manipulated. I used to hate those things, but now that it can be easily moved on/off screen and altered with simple html it is great. I see little AOL influence on Netscape 6 (a few links at the bottom, add in Net2Phone which can be removed) and thats about it. Everything else looks and feels Mozilla. Its even skinnable (how cool is that).
It appears to me that if someone just sh**ed out Internet Explorer with Netscapes name on it you would still claim that it is riddled with bugs and adultered by the fingers of the omnipotent AOL (although ive always feared the fingers of Microsoft much more). Netscape 6 is excellent. Sure, it has bugs. It happens to be a preview release.

No, it's not a rip. I'm the author of Novobot. Some ideas just float in the air waiting to be implemented in one or another way. Besides, Novobot is quite different from WatzNew (which I just checked out, thanks for pointing it out) - it's not a general site monitoring agent, but a more specialized headline grabber; it cannot extract arbitrary data from pages, like WatzNew, instead it gets only headlines either from XML newsfeeds (does WatzNew do that?) or from HTML pages, and now it has history feature allowing it to display only unread headlines, like an Usenet newsreader (does WatzNew have that?) There are plenty of similar programs (Carmen Headline Viewer, Wonko's GeekReader) for users to have a choice. If you like WatzNew, use it. But don't accuse the author of stealing ideas. Is WinZip a rip off PKZIP, or Wise installer a rip off InstallShield? I think not. They are just different. It's all about user's choice.

HKR,, memclocking, %REG_DWORD%, 110
Change the 0 to a 1 and the 110 to a 125, so you get

Contrary to most of the reviews posted here, I find 4.73 to be excellent. Good response. good stability and excellent security with the 128-bit version. All of the comments about Netscape 6.0 PR1 are not appropriate fot this article. This is a good release so enjoy it!

Wow! Whadd'ya know? A _radio_ feature. Innovative! Amazing! Hi-diddly-ho, neighbour! If only they could get their heads on straight and fix their CSS (etc) support instead of trying to play feature-catch-up with MS.

Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 16, 2000)
It relies on Outlook Express. So in case you are not using it, this download is useless.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 14, 2000)
1. you must understand this is a PRE BETA... the release is many months away.. i didnt hear this much b****ing over MS's PREVIEW of media player 7, that had many flaws also.
2. for everyone complaining about pages not being rendered correctly in netscape or mozilla... its not them, its IE. Netscape is totally (well very close to totally) standards complaint, so if something doesnt show up right on netscape 6, its because its coded wrong.
3. all in all, its a decent release. i think they should have waited a little longer (branched after the m15 milestone instead of the m14) to release netscape 6. but its coming along well. if you want a real idea of where this program's going, download a nightly build at www.mozilla.org
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 10, 2000)
At first sight I thought it was Mozilla, but it's just a disfigured version of Netscape. Some features are sloweer than previous versions of Netscape. Web printing to printer needs improvement. File saving is a nuisance due to the "php3" extension. I have yet to find more flaws.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 8, 2000)
Yes it's slow, too slow, and it doesn't format one single of my fav webpages correctly, or perhaps explore has been doing it wrong all along:) Anyway, most of the explorer components are already running when you talk about load time, so it really can't be compared that way.
The new interface also was baaad baaad baad, so something has to be done soon.
I will uninstall this now and wait for the next release, then give it another chance.

Off course there's a lot to tell about every project in progress, especially projects this big, but for now the 'netscape-guys' have come up with a surftool that will sure miss the boat on the long run.
Netscape will continue to deal with the unescapable fact that it will always be an exterior application that has to start beside and not 'in' the windows-engine.
A 10-seconds startup time on a 600 Mhz PC is simply unacceptable...
Big deal, we're in beta-phase they say.
Compared to IE5.5 (which surfs like a dream now...also in beta!) netscape (while using it) is like swimming in molasses.
30 mb's extra on the C-drive, a heck of a lot registrykeys to render at startup and the fact that you already have an integrated, state-of-the-art, fullgrown webbrowser onboard, makes this 'new' browser doomed to vanish in less then a year...

Thanx to spwolf's article bellow. I downloaded the skin and am very happy with the new style. No more TV scan-line effects on the browser bar. I had no idea that it was skinable :) I love it and I've upgradeed my rating of this browser from 4 to 5. This preview release outperforms IE 5.5 handsdown and I am very impressed. Ofcourse both products are in their preliminary stages and are subject to additional changes which will effect performance. However for now, Netscape's got the lead.

This is horrific. Anarki, why would everyone want to save up and spend tons of money to get a new computer so than can just run Netscape 6 faster. Thats so f@cking stupid. Think about it, people can use IE 5/5.5 SMOOTHLY and still be on a slow machine. Besides, Nutscrape is so far behind in technology, they can't get pages to render right and other stupid s***. IE will forever be better than Nutscrape's Navigator. This is sad that they released this BS just because the verdict of MS came out the other day. You know its true you lames a** Nutscrape users. Don't even try to deny it. Nutscrape has been whining for too long now and they are just trying to look good here...how pathetic. Seems that they just make themselves look worse by putting out crap like this. Sorry, but you all know that I'm telling the truth. Just ask Web page developers how much netscape sucks, and that is your answer to whether netscape should just give up now.

Guys, Netscape 6 is one hell of a upgrade to version 4.x. 2 Years in the making, so I agree 100% with Simmo. Its a awsome program, totally free for anyone, (and i mean anyone, even Linux users unlike IE that doesnt run on it). You people say that it loads slow, well im on a Celeron 400 with 192 Meg ram running Win2K, it took 14 seconds to load completly from the time I clicked the icon, to my start page being fully loaded. Internet Explorer takes 7 seconds to do the same thing, but what most of you are forgetting that 80% of Internet Explorer lies in your Windows O/S. Netscape has a totally independant core to load up, so im sure if they had some of there boot processes in your Windows Kernel, Netscape 6 would load in 4-5 seconds flat. Secondly, you guys say its bulky and a recource hog, well, incase most of u need your glasses rechecked, you all have the option to only download what you need from installation, and recource wise, well it takes 25 megs or RAM to run smoothly. (screenshot of system processes here from my machine - http://www.geocities.com/mr_floppy66/desktop2.jpg). Now b4 u start to b**** and whine, remember that this browser was rewritten from scratch, so you all can count on it being up-to-date by todays web-standards. Sure its bulky, but please, it is the 21st century. If your whining that "ohhh its too slow" or "damn this is bulky" then maybe its time you all save your money to invest in a up-to-date machine that will run tomorrows software smoothy. To the developers at Mozilla, Gecko and Netscape: BRAVO!!! I cant wait until this is 100% done guys!
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 6, 2000)
It appears to me that this 'pre-release' is a case of trying to get something out to keep the masses happy. Problem is, the masses want perfect operation from a pre-release program. Anything less is just not good enough. Why? Remember that IE4.x killed more systems than we care to mention and that was an official release that was also integrated into a DOS GUI (;O)
Yep NS6 crashes on some systems. Yes, it doesn't work on some systems. either did pre-releases of W2K, so give it time. We're lucky it didn't get swept under the AOL carpet!

To purplemonkeydan: Totally lame response, you obviously don't understand the BETA process. For Netscape to release a disaster of a browser this far into the beta process means the final product will be awful. I've deleted Netscape from my computer permanently (had been using it since v2.0) and switched exclusively to IE.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 6, 2000)
Well, I prefer to take a look from the sidelines in the browser war, I have developed and used both (Internet Explorer and Netscape 6.0(Mozilla)) from source code, I agree that Netscape 6.0 has few months more work to go but the amount of improvement that has happened since the Mozilla Milestone 8 has been astounding.
Internet Explorer on the other hand is good in its own respects but hardly follows and design standars (but does not matter that much[to most people] as to gain speed enhancement(through kernel access techniques and winsock methods(which are ms's)))
Netscape 6.0 has been totally redone, I really mean totally, due to the bloatiness and ineficiencyies of Netscape 4.X browser core.
Internet Explorer currently does not run in any other operating system without greatly modifying the core to a maximum extent whereas mozilla(or netscape) is designed to run and compile from basically any type of computer.
I would expect many enhancements for the core of mozilla in the next few months and a great increase in speed and stability of the browser.
At the current time I applaud the mozilla team for creating a sound and proper browser with the ability to be compiled by anyone, on basically any operating system with a c/c++ compiler and the actual work that has been put in over the past 2 years of developing mozilla.
Just remember, its still a beta product only about 70% done at the current time.

This program just shows you more of AOLs Anti-Midas touch. Everything they get starts to suck. Netscape has sunk to a new low with this. It won't display pages right, it doesn't do hyperlinks right, and to make it worse it doesn't even provide a way to uninstall easily.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 6, 2000)
Wow! Netscape 6.0 is fantastic! It's lightning fast and more stable than 4.72 has been for me. I went into this expecting the most accurate rendering and fastest speed of any major web browser, but I wasn't expecting it to be THIS good. It's about time somebody made some decent improvements to a web browser... I was very disappointed with the insignificant changes in MSIE 5.0 and 5.5. I'm glad Netscape didn't make the same mistake.

Do Not Install this POS.
This is the worst looking browser I have ever seen, it takes FOREVER to load anything and it gave me Dr. Watsons on NT Workstation left and right the whole time I played with it. This is a complete piece of )#*$( and is not even worth a minute of anyones time.
If anyone likes this version of Netscape then they most definatly have serious mental issues.

TOTAL PIECE OF SHI* - DO NOT DOWNLOAD

i give this a one because it *STILL* doesn't implement css2 properly and doesn't seem to handle about half the javascripts that i've thrown at it. i've been using mozilla since milestone 8 and make reports about what is lacking with every release, but nothing ever seems to get fixed. i put this browser one spot below opera because while it has about the same functioning (ie. very little), it also has quite possibly the ugliest UI i have ever seen on any program to date. at least opera's UI is tolerable.

I must really be spoiled as an Opera user. It doesn't matter if it's Mozilla/Communicator 6 or IE 5.x, they're both slow, resource-hogging, bug-bloated _garbage_. This latest Netscape release is particularly bad. Hey, if you want to see how a *real* beta is supposed to perform, go get beta 2 of Opera 4.0 at www.opera.com. Granted, it maybe *somewhat* slower to load than the last full release (3.62). BUT it's still far more streamlined and resource-efficient than the other two. Btw, 4.0 supports virtually everything NC and MI do.
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 5, 2000)
Its called a beta. There will be bugs. Remember that Netscape ISNT microsoft, if netscape made windows you can be sure ie would run like s***, because in linux netscape runs like a champ, takes 2 seconds and its up and running and I haven't had it crash once there. But this is windows and im stickin with netscape, crashes and all. Im sure by the time the final is out it will be more stable and look better than ie. Just my $.02

On both the pre-release-pre-beta and the legit pre-beta, I get an error that reads "The procedure entry point ??_U@YAPAXI@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCRT.DLL" then it loads infinite ammounts of little windows until I kill the process. Am I the only one thats seen this?

I give this a 3 because for me it is about halfway there. I got it from the FTP site this morning, and unless I missed some files or something it does not show any graphics, and Java will not run. It also does not seem to handle some DHTML scripts very well yet either. I did a complete install and it does work ok except for those items I noticed. I keeping getting the "connection refused from Netscape", but may be because they have stopped further Dl'ing of it. I think I like the improvements that I do see, and perhaps they will have a nice product when it is out of beta. As good as IE? Na! Not yet anyhow........
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 5, 2000)
There doesn't seem to be much difference between this and the last mozilla. I kind of felt that they rushed this out. Especially the installer, which left absolutely no Add/Remove/Uninstall option on my Windows2000Pro machine. If it is supposed to be a preview, that should mean that I could uninstall, right?
Reviewing 6.0 Preview Release 1 (Apr 5, 2000)
Nothing new but a slight overhaul of the GUI. It still takes 3 times as long to start the program as IE 5 or 5.5 on Win2K. I was hoping this would be a great new product, instead, it's a repackaged and somewhat slimmer NS 4.72. I used NS from version .99b to until IE 4 came out, I thought maybe this would be the one to switch me back to NS...NOT. BTW, when trying to convert a 4.x profile to the new profile, it mentions NS 5.0...somebody forgot to change that, oops. Well, I'll keep it around for the fun of it, but won't be using it much.
