I beta tested NIS & 360 (2013) Both the beta's & the final leave behind large amount of files & folders, and some are hidden, also large amount of registry entries are also left behind & some are legacy & can be difficult to remove.

MS first used an un-installer in Win95 & 17 years later still far too much junk is left behind after a so called un-install - it's just plain idleness on the part of the software writers - Norton should point you to a standalone un-installer at the time they enquire by a re-directed web page why you are leaving Norton - Norton is not alone in this though, try removing MS Office 2010 -

Does exactly what it advertises - and is fairly thorough. Doesn't get ALL Norton traces, but 99% ain't bad. And it's a helluva lot better than CA (no removal tool that works), AVG (broken removal tool), McAfee (not bad, but not as good as Norton) or ZoneAlarm (none and uninstaller doesn't work more often than not).

For those bagging Norton - probably worth trying it again. It isn't 2006 anymore, and Norton's 2009-2010 product is arguably the fastest integrated product on the market (NIS, not 360).

-- I had to go through the system, and kill it manually.

then ran it again, and there was still a ton of Symantec junk in the system folders, and registry.,.

One of the few Symantec products i like...I use this program too often anymore.

McAfee does give trouble as well with removal (especially if you install IE8), but at least McAfee doesn't slow a system as much as Norton.

Symantec keeps swallowing other companies, then ruining the products they made. Norton was the big one.

I can see why someone would want to use this to fix a damaged installation of a Symantec product, but why in the world would someone be insane enough to not want a Symantec product (such as Norton Antivirus)? Symantec makes the fastest and most accurate antivirus, firewall and system utility software ever created and they always have. Unless you're broke why go for inferior free software (such as AVG) instead of Symantec software?

Norton gets a lot of criticism for its software, but it sure does sell a lot of it. Let's all be fair--when it is working (usually when it is new), Norton stuff works pretty well. People complain it is bloated, hogs resources, etc. but on today's powerful machines that is not as big a problem as people make it out to be. That said, eventually, Norton products will go belly up and take your system with it. This is a great little tool to help you when (not if, but when) this happens. It doesn't always kill every little file, but it will generally take it out of your system and leave what's left as inert

I can't possibly write a rating higher then a 3....it really needs to be able to remove Symantec antivirus as well, I mean its almost the same program, made by the same company. Instead of relying on customers writing and updating large .bat files and huge .reg files. As for everyones comments on it being bloated, it bogs down my system far less then every other av I tried, except for the non-live scanning ones, which shouldn't count.

But since we're straying off topic anyway give me a chance to scream spyware are viruses too, I shouldn't need two separate programs scanning every file my computer accesses, for --- sakes someone make a program for both!

Can't say for sure, but program makes no mention of working on Symantec AV (Corporate), which has the same uninstall problems, and generally is uninstalled a lot more (then NAV) for their constant tiny secuirty patches, which end up requiring domain admins to manually spend an hour or more in each machine hunting registry keys. Way to half-do a fix that helps less then 10% of your users experiencing the problem symantec. And don't think just business are effected by SAV, a lot of them pay for the extra licenses to let their employee's use it on their home machines too.

Also NEVER force the user to restart. Ask them to restart now or Later!

For some reason, it is very satisfying to watch this remove Norton Bloatware.

The owners are amazed how much faster their computer is once I remove norton...

Most have since switched to NOD32, KAV, or Mcafee (usually from ISP).

Says a lot about a company when the best product they have is something to remove the rest of their software. I remember the good old days when Norton Utilities fit on a single 5.25 inch floppy and how I would wow my buddies with their system information tool (hey when I replaced the crystal on my Leading Edge Model D, I got a S.I rating of 2.1). Well, anyway the Norton Removal Tool does the trick but it is a shame that it is needed in the first place.

landfish

landfish reviewed v2207.2.02.14 on Jan 23, 2007

why are people giving this 5 stars, we should all be sitting back laughing or crying at Symantec. Here's a company who's product is legendary in it's capacity to stuff systems for one reason or another, problems on uninstall just being one of them. Instead of actually fixing the problem in their programs they bring out something to mop up the mess after it's all gone wrong. It's like if a mobile phone company had a phone that kept exploding and damaging peoples ears bringing out a range of band-aids and cotton buds to help fix the ear and totally neglecting the problem with the phone.

Why do we need this? Obviously because Symantec is unable to write good software that doesn't corrupt the Windows registry. So we need removal software to remove sloppy coding. Its like buying a car with spare tires because you don't trust the original ones.

I have never had a single problem removing Symantec products with the included uninstaller that came with the product. Mcafee products are a whole different story. When I bought my Dell laptop I actually had to reformat the hard disk and do a clean install of Windows XP to get rid of the Mcafee Antivirus software. Whenever I tried to uninstall Mcafee I just got a dialog box stating the program was being uninstalled, then the uninstaller program froze.

A real life saver. Just so many, too many, commodity computers come with Norton preinstalled. *shudders thinking about long days and some long nights dumping that awful crap off of some "puter" that "won't turn on"* A must have for anyone who works maintaining home and office computers.

I glowingly recommend any product that entertains this notion of removing Norton products.

Amazing!!! I'd recommend it to anyone using a Norton product.

Oh wait, it breaks BITS, not only does their software suck and hurt your system more than it helps, the uninstall breaks your system too. WOW!!!

Best software release from Symantec, ever!

If it breaks BITS, just get Dial-a-fix and cure all the issues.

I have used the software and it work great, but
the only reason why this software is available, is because Symantec has made poor uninstall tools for their bloated software packages. These packages are so bloated that they don't even know how to uninstall them self. So Symantec creates a software to help those lost packages find their way home. I'm sure that the only reason why they are not including this in their packages is because this software might also get lost in the process of installing the bloated package.

WARNING!: SymNRT can kill BITS, which Microsoft uses for Windows downloads, including Windows Update.

There are fixes you can find elswhere (Google it), but it isn't pretty or easy. Just don't install Symantec/Norton Internet Security or Antivirus (home versions) on your PC to begin with; they cause a lot of problems with other programs.

Probably the best piece of software ever written by Symantec!
