Publisher's Description
Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.
Paint.NET is freeware, but the team is accepting donations here.

After all these years the interface is still slow to work with.
The day I can alter the properties of the layer in the layer interface without having to go to a separate dialog is the day Ill start using it near exclusively. Until then it just feels like a complete waste of code.

I have been using Paint.Net for years now. I have rolled it out to over 1000 users in our company with some extra addons, and it's been great. No hassles, no crashes and with a great modding community, there really is not much it cannot do. Keep up the great work !

Editor is quite capable. Has some advanced functions, but it's useful only if you need them - rating 7/10.
Stil needs more attention for basic functionality user confort - rating 3/10.
Dependency on .NET 4.5.2 limits editor for Windows 7+ only.

Version 4.0 5168 is a password protected .zip archive. Any chance you could include the password so that it can actually be opened? It's kind of useless as is.

recent earlier versions were .net 3.5 , clearly stated on the download page.

This update fixes a bug when saving 8-bit images, improves layer composition and Gaussian Blur performance, and is now updated to support the new .NET Framework 4.0." framework 4 is in fact now a requirement.
Absolutely one of the top 10 pieces of free software ever.

Actually sbeckstead, Paint.NET is .net based, hence the ".NET" in the name.
Also I've been using this app for a while. Haven't found anything this can't do. The PSD plugin is lacking though. But thats not Paint.NET's fault.

Your humble opinion is worthless as you obviously don't know what a .net language is and definitely didn't use the product as it's not even net based.
That being said your 5 stars are worth a grain of salt. It's a good product and deserves continuing.

I hate .net languages and imho 99.9% of all net-based applications suck. But this is a work of art and truly a testament of HOW .net applications should be written and done.

This appears to be getting much closer:
Fixed some miscellaneous small issues and crashes
Optimized performance in a few places, especially undo/redo and copy/paste
Korean translation has been removed. Sadly, we were unable to find the resources to complete this.
Other translations are now complete: Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish.

* Fixed a performance glitch with some tools, where the action and subsequent undo/redo would be slow.
* Reduced temporary memory usage of commands in the Image menu.
* Reduced disk space use by about 12MB by using NTFS compression on installation files related to staging (.MSI) and diagnostics (.PDB).
* Fixed many clipping issues with tools and effects with respect to an active selection.
* Improved compression for .PDN images.
* Fixed many small miscellaneous glitches and crashes.

For the very minimal amount of photo editing I do, this program works very well (in spite of being written in .NET)
Why does microsoft not include this in windows as a paint replacement?

Do not let some of the reviewers mislead you.
Paint.NET is not a do it all photography program nor does
it claim to be but a very good free Paint replacement program
that is feature rich for its size and light on resources.
If you want a program that does it all pick The Gimp or pay for
Photoshop. Paint.NET is all I need.

Good! 5 stars! Not a real power house, but has enough features to make it very useful. I think it's the best Freeware paint/photo editing software, a virtual tie with Photofiltre.
Paint.Net and Photofiltre are really no more powerful than the rest of the top 5 Freeware paint/photo editing programs, but their GUI's are far more usable than the others. I just can't bring myself to use some of the weird, ugly, and awkward GUI's on the others, so Paint.Net and Photofiltre win.

A bit underwhelming to be honest. Seems like most of the improvements were under the hood, so to speak. Due to the long wait between versions, I expected more tools or things like re-editable text in this new version instead of new effects. It's still good, of course, but to the average user, there's not much added functionality than 3.36 and I dare say, you might even get less because your plugins will be broken. But then again, this is alpha so there should be an expectation of incompleteness and bugs.
