Publisher's Description

Pale Moon is the work of a single individual, using contributed Open Source code to create a full-featured, speed optimized version of the popular Firefox browser. Having seen the advantages on other systems (e.g. Linux) with regards to programs being compiled specifically for the capabilities of the machine it is installed on, it became obviously clear that Windows users were at a disadvantage: Mozilla only releases windows executables with maximum compatibility in mind, meaning that Firefox is made to run on as many different systems as possible, sacrificing efficiency and speed in the process to be compatible with, by current standards, absolutely ancient hardware.

Pale Moon is a middle road, cutting away support for ancient systems to achieve a significant speed and efficiency increase, but not trying to squeeze the last few percent more out of it by limiting the range of systems it will run on even more. It aims to not waste computer resources and power on inefficient programs, while at the same time serving a wide range of systems that are currently in use around the world.

With this version I'm putting Pale Moon back as my default browser. Been having some issues with Waterfox lately. Long ago left Seamonkey, Firefox and Cyberfox. Not into Chrome, and forget about Edge and I.E.

Tried this. Seems to be highly compatible with Firefox addins.

Downside is it seems to carry over some of the process hanging of the faults that stopped me from using Firefox (close firefox, then restart - often does not restart and 2 instances hanging in memory). Too bad because I like FF (and some of its clones like this) over Chrome/IE/Edge/Opera.

I can only give it a 4 because I do not find it as useful as I would like.

Ever since Pale Moon starting using the Goanna engine, many sites I use on a daily basis don't recognize it. Especially the site I use for my online daily banking. Don't have this issue at all whilst using SeaMonkey, Firefox, Cyberfox, K-Meleon. The earlier versions of Pale Moon were very, very good. And no, I'm not a Pale Moon hater. Not at all. The browser does show promise, IMHO it just needs further work. Will check in on newer versions and check the progress.

Pale Moon freezes constantly and I have to continually close the browser. Not so with Firefox. CTR is indeed very helpful and useful. Pale Moon's code is also comprised primarily of Firefox code and when I visit many, many sites with Pale Moon they tell me I need an up to date browser! The earlier versions were very, very good. But, not anymore. Another very good alternative is Cyberfox.

Cerky

Cerky reviewed v26.0.0 Beta 2 on Sep 11, 2015

CTR is indeed some kind of stupid bandage, because if Mozilla would not have removed customization features to be attractive to total n00bs and Chrome users, there would be first no need for an add-on like that and forks like Pale Moon would not be necessary.

IJLV

IJLV reviewed v26.0.0 Beta 2 on Sep 10, 2015

Classic Theme Restorer IS NOT a lame bandage. It is a very useful extension.
Firefox is also fully customizable. I find it more secure for my banking needs.
Every time I have tried to use the current version of Pale Moon browser for my banking needs it keeps asking me for a more updated version of Firefox.
Don't have that issue at all whilst using Cyberfox or Waterfox.
Pale Moon isn't a unique fork of Firefox and it's GUID is not unique either.
Pale Moon contains a lot of code from Firefox. Which is fact.
And Pale Moon wouldn't exist without Mozilla's Firefox. Also a fact.
I did really like the earlier versions of Pale Moon and do wish the developer success for the future.
Also, I use it from time to time for casual browsing.

No Firefox hater here! Means i totally understand why Mozilla "must clone Chrome"!

Please guys keep in mind that Mozilla is in direct competition to the big one's! Customization features made Mozilla's reputation of slow, unstable and bloated! So, to gain market share, they had to try something new.

And so many people are loving Google Chrome because it offers exactly that. It is simple, not complex, has an appealing design, unusual tab form and gets out of your way!

If you take a look at Mozilla's input.mozilla.org feedback system, people complain often "make it like Chrome" or "please add a feature like Chrome"!

So, what do you guys expect Mozilla to do in the first place? Chrome is the market leader! And to stay competitive it is logically that Mozilla tries to emulate the Chrome behavior, while making sure the existing user base is not alienated as much as possible.

Granted, Mozilla could have done a way better job, they took a risk which did not work out in the end. But they still have a large number of people around, who love exactly the things they have done. Never forget that, this is not bad or wrong, it is if anything at all, debatable!

Why i am using Pale Moon? Because i do not agree with all above! But stop bashing Mozilla, without them, Seamonkey and Pale Moon would not be around, they have earned at least a little bit respect for that!

Ignore the haters, haters gonna hate, Pale Moon is not the first and not the last which is affected by this s***-storm mentality which the WWW of today gives us!

Today's web is filled with immature children and even adults which have never learned to behave themselves!

During the Amiga age people had more of a brain than today!

Love Pale Moon and dislike all the flamers, s***stormer's and haters!

Do not agree, count in my 5 stars friends :)

5 stars, because it simply fulfills my needs!

VivaldiMoon

VivaldiMoon reviewed v26.0.0 Beta 2 on Sep 5, 2015

Pale Moon and Vivaldi are my preferred browsers.

Switched over to Pale Moon as Mozilla tried to make a Chrome similar experience. Bad move Mozilla, most people wanted an experience with geek features and no minimalistic experience like Chrome.

Pale Moon has indeed some trouble with webpages, Dropbox with standard uploader for example or missing MSE functions which enable only 720P video on Youtube. What i do like of Pale Moon: The maker is fond of power users, and he has an ideology which is against closed source features like MSE which leads to DRM! But that are small problems which have no real impact.

Pale Moon is for sure no outdated browser or frozen in time one. For example on Github the next chosen set of HTML5 forms have been selected to be ported over. Instead Pale Moon is a browser for us conservative guys which do not need bleeding edge web standards

But what is indeed a problem is, as Pale Moon has only one lead programmer, the project will have a shorter life span as compared with Vivaldi or Firefox. That can not be denied, so if Moonchild falls out, the chance that someone takes over is small.

If you want to criticize something, you can do that point! But what has that to do with Vivaldi?

As Mozilla is hellbent on destroying Firefox for Desktop to make it 1:1 cross portable for mobile too, they remove more and more desktop related functions and hope that add-on devs bring back those features!

And if i may remember you all:

https://blog.mozilla.org...eloping-firefox-add-ons/

http://www.dedoimedo.com...efox-addons-future.html

Mozilla does all for Chrome parity! So, i see more future in a browser like Vivaldi which may be Chromium based but adds features which oldskool Opera and Firefox once has possessed but which have been removed for Chrome parity and mobile device compatibility! For the ones who dislike closed source, Otter Browser would be the future alternative to switch over.

Anyway, as long as Pale Moon exists and until the point where no bugfixes or feature additions can be ported over because of total incompatibility, 5 stars from me!

And to the haters, if you hate Pale Moon, do not write here. You only want people not to leave Firefox which has a constantly shrinking market share. You are desperate you lose your favorite toy soon! How was it this time? 0.35 market share gone again?

Orhin

Orhin reviewed v26.0.0 Beta 2 on Sep 5, 2015

Oh look, the 4chan brigade of Firefox fanboys is back!

Classic Theme restorer IS a lame bandage. That features never should have been removed from the core product at all! Pale Moon delivers you exactly that features still integrated into the core product.

That pages do widly not work is nonsense! Thanks to the Pale Moon compatibility modes Firefox and Gecko strings are getting re-added which solves most of possible problems which appear without using that strings.

CTR gives everyone the illusion Firefox is still customizable, but in fact it is not. Without that add-on you can do almost no advanced toolbar customization!

Who wants a superior browser without many add-ons (a browser is no toy, i never understoold guys who stuffed their browser full of junk) uses Pale Moon. If you want a lame product which copycat's Chrome, chooses Cyberfox or Firefox or Waterfox!

This version is NOT.

Many sites I visit tell me I need a more up to date browser whilst using Pale Moon. Check out the UA string. Firefox, SeaMonkey, Cyberfox, Waterfox are far better alternatives and have more up to date code. Also as an IT professional I do not recommend Pale Moon to my clients at this juncture. The earlier versions of this browser were excellent. Hopefully, the developer will use a more up to date code in the next version. Needs improvement.

If you dont see view older versions, toggle down to the bottom of that page to version Information. I have actually stopped using Palemoon, as many sites will no longer render properly, and some disallow getting into comments, with the latest versions released.

I also wrote the developer about a specific problem which keeps some sites from loading. He quickly and courteously gave me the answer that, since these site were not set up correctly, they were at fault, and he would not be changing the coding. I replied that Waterfox works on these same sites, but he did not budge.

The author has his rights, but his statements reminded me of when I used to defend Opera [Presto-based] for these same sorts of things, and was always given grief because I thought that by keeping to standards, the world could slowly be brought into line. Well, that worked out great...

Not only is Opera no more, Google has decided to not follow standards, and it is getting them lots of praise.

What I would say is that Palemoon is great if you wish to live that way, but it is getting harder to do all the time, and Palemoon has but one dev, and less market share than Opera had.

Great, if you can deal with the intentional problems.

Couple that i did have problems with, I just went to the add on site for that add on, cursor'd down and found the link for older versions of that add on. From there u can see older versions that do work with Pale Moon. No stability issues. I use the 64 bit version, so if your having probs with the 32 bit version, maybe give this a try. Plus has the old firefox UI. And the 5 or 6 complete themes i use from the firefox days, work with Pale Moon.

Nice looking. Lean and tight. Efficiency is a good thing. Have already left Firefox, and not looking back. My addons work and most controls are familiar. Only problem was with disappearing menu buttons, but importing my data manually instead of using the import program solved that. I think any other glitches that appear will be cleaned up, so I'm not worried about leaving Firefox.

Speaking of which... Firefox had become so bloated, and the policy behind the coding and updating so detached and so uninterested in the users' opinions, that I felt it was time to move on. Glad I did, actually.

I agree with cltx99, Pale Moon (here as well anyway) is slightly longer to load than Firefox. I'm comparing Pale Moon 24.02 64-bit with Firefox 24.
But a second or two is quickly forgotten once I start moving around with Pale Moon, with no doubt snappy, fast, fluid. This is the 64-bit effect, but not only: the browser takes advantage of what a modern cpu has to give. Moreover, the developer is concerned with a more classical approach of Mozilla's browser, seems to me he is not of the lot of those who wish to tailor Firefox both on a simplified view for the masses and a quest of fashion as for the display, i.e. the staus4evar add-on is integrated in Pale Moon (which is an exception, otherwise no extra included add-on).
I have switched from Firefox to Pale Moon, it is in fact moving in the neighborhood only, within the lands of Mozilla.

For 32bit the Palemoon build is unbeatable, so I give it a 5

Another 5 stars from me on the 64 bit port. I hope the author of this never decides to stop working on it. If you are using Opera or any other 3rd party browser you are missing out. I have been using Firefox since it was Firebird and I hate to say this. Don't mess with the new versions of Firefox, wait for this to come out a few days later.

@kstev99

I am not sure why but Waterfox requires Visual C++ Redistributable be installed before it will run or you get a msvcr100.dll is missing error. Given the insignificant differences in the benchmarks you cited, I would prefer to use something that I can download and run, not have to add things I don't normally use installed on my machine. But that's just me.

Brilliant. The best browser I have used. Great job.

I installed the 64 bit port of this browser and immediately made it my default browser. It's Firefox on steroids. The new versions lag behind the new versions of FF by a few days, but they are well worth the wait.

a thousand apologies for not remembering which, i installed pale moon on a 32 bit system and a 64 bit system. one or the other smoked, while one was comparable to the nightly. but try it, you may be very pleasantly surprised.

Having tied the FF 9.xx offerings I was less than impressed & continued with Chrome finals.

However this caught my eye today & having never tried Pale Moon I was not expecting much. I was wrong, this seems to sort all the things I dislike about FF on Win 7. I am very impressed with Pale Moon. This is the browser I have been looking for.

Brilliant!

[edit] Having used PM heavily for the last two days I have ditched Chrome which has been my fave browser for some time & use PM as default. I can't speak too highly of this clone!

Pale Moon is a nice product, slick smooth and fast.

If there are no problems in the next few days then it'll become my default browser by replacing the existing Firefox.

One PIA issue remains - like ALL Mozilla code, it kills plugins that haven't been updated to suit. How Mozilla gets away with this incompatibility crap--year after year--is amazing (it's why I'm using Opera more and more)...

By running the portable version and overwriting it with the newer one, all previous settings and bookmarks are left exactly as before. Disable the hd cache and use only memory for best performance.

In about:config go to:
browser.cache.disk.enable - set to false
browser.cache.memory.enable - set to true

Right-click & select New > Integer with:
browser.cache.memory.capacity
set to -1

I give it a 4 .
First coz it's great to have browser choices , second coz it's powered by mozilla.
However if they post some screenshot could bring more users in a first experience through it .

First off, I didn't have the stability and installation problems others have reported. I was easily able to transfer over all of my add-ons, bookmarks (yes, including the toolbar), settings, active tabs, etc. using the profile copying tool they link to right on their main page. The process was fairly seamless, if not ideal (the migration tool really should be built in).

Speed seemed slightly faster, but certainly nothing Earth shattering. A couple of content-heavy pages loaded faster.

However.

It quickly wound up using MASSIVE amounts of physical memory (RAM) after browsing the same pages I usually do. To be sure, I opened up standard Firefox and browsed my usual pages (normally about 15 tabs open at any given time) for about an hour, and wound up using about 400MB of RAM. Then I did the exact same thing with Pale Moon and it was using upwards of 900MB! This was under Win7 x64 on an Athlon X2, and I was able to duplicate the issue any time.

I've tried Pale Moon several times under Linux in the past, and it always seems to be something like this that kept me from switching to it. It's ALWAYS something. I guess there's a very good reason that Mozilla compiles for compatibility like they do.

Anyway, the almost unnoticeable performance gains just aren't worth the seemingly inevitable bugs (in the case of the Windows version, excessive RAM usage). My advice would be to stick with Firefox.

I wanted to see if there was noticeable benchmark differences between Palle Moon and the normal Firefox distro. I conducted browser benchmarks at Peacekeeper (http://clients.futuremark.com/peacekeeper) and found that Pale Moon scored better on the benchmarks. I also checked the last release of the normal Firefox distro and Pale Moon scored significantly better.

My thanks goes out to the Pale Moon distro maintainer for the time spent optimizing Firefox.

I've got this browser installed and also have Firefox installed. I have had no issues with it at all and no conflicts with my Firefox browser. My bookmarks haven't been affected either. Am using version 3.6.16 And Firefox doesn't launch when I click on the Palemoon icon. I've checked that in Windows task manager. Very nice and efficient browser. Would like to see it on Mac and Linux OS.

I use Pale Moon. It is slightly snappier than the standard FF, but no great shakes. Doubt if I could tell the difference in speed in a double-blind test.

I also like the little video grab button when you are viewing one. One less addon and one more great feature of this browser.
It uses about half the memory that FF portable does & does everything ff does just with a different icon. I will only run it portably, just like ff.
BTW to the devs: muchas gracias
http://www.palemoon.org/palemoon-portable.shtml
Migration tool does not work for portables. Just copy the palemoon folder from the portable version's bin folder to yours- too easy. Works as a portable ap much better than ff also.
It can only update addons as far as I know.

Didn't work on my XP SP3 Core2 duo, 4 gigs ram. Mega installation errors, then nothing 'worked' on sites.
no faster than normal firefox 3.5

no uninstall, track down the profile and program folder and delete it I guess.

not ready for prime time, not really seeing a need for it, either

I like the icon so I copied the pertinent text using reshacker from the firefox.exe and pasted them to the palemoon.exe and now finally have a different icon from the stupid orange one with the exact same version number that it was originally (8888). But that was the only file I used at first with portable ff.

The palemoon portable v3.69, aside from speed improvements, also disables activex scripting by default and so is slightly more secure as well. So far so good.
Thanks for the icon. btw the migration tool does not work between ff portable and pm portable. Also the check default browser at startup does not go away until you tell it no AND uncheck the box. minor
Weird but it is half the size of ff portable too. I really don't like portable aps .com aps as most of their packages are simply BS and unnecessary.
The portable version was created with win pen pack for a change.

I found Palemoon to be stable in performance. However, I did not notice that it was significantly quicker than my standard Firefox installation.

Some other considerations:
Palemoon appears to be the project of a single individual (or very small group), not an organization that is accountable in any way. Although this does not appear to be spyware, I am reluctant to entrust my browser security to an unknown entity.

Palemoon does not consult with Mozilla or have any apparent approval by that organization.

Third party security (or privacy) software will not automatically locate and secure Palemoon.

The program author, Moonchild, gave very quick and useful tech support.

IMHO: Palemoon is what it claims to be-- a stripped-for-Windows version of Firefox. If you find that Palemoon is a significant improvement to Firefox, you might want to consider NOT using it for browsing that must be secure.

I have no particular reason to distrust PaleMoon or MoonChild. I am just cautious of this sort of software.

Upon uninstalling PaleMoon, the only problem I had was getting Firefox to set itself as the default browser again. I ran the Firefox install program again to fix the problem.

Be careful with this one. read read read... I have an older processor so my instillation of Pale Moon doesn't start (error message when starting) . There is a Troubleshooting section at the home page and I found Pale Moon for Athlon XP.

This is not a "childproof" app It will use your existing profile and, if allowed to, delete some important items when uninstalled, So... copy/backup your
C:\Documents and Settings\*Your account*\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
and
C:\Documents and Settings\*Your account*\Application Data\Mozilla
folders before installing.
I am rating this 3 because The uninstall link is not in the start-up folder and the checkbox to remove my "vital" Firefox profile on uninstall was not clearly marked as such in the uninstaller
UPDATE:
Latest news:

http://www.palemoon.org/
The Firefox 3.6.6 code base has been released. Pale Moon will follow suit when there has been sufficient time for building and testing it, but development is halted for a few weeks due to relocation. Please be patient, folks!

I could not play a vid in firefox portable that wanted me to install quicktime. I ran qt-lite and that did not help. Anyways, this is EXACTLY like ff. Only problem was after blocking dns checks, adding no script, and importing bookmarks it refuses to connect. While portable ff with dns blocking works the same only it does connect. Could be my firewall, who knows. Speed and or optimization wise, other than a rare quicktime snafu (who cares), FF portable works quite well enough for now.

Works well (on my system) and uses slightly less memory than regular FF. Will try to update in a month or so and give a higher rating if no problems. I'll point out that I used Sandboxie to try it out and don't know how well it works alongside a normal FF installation. I believe there have been some modifications to about:config and that is responsible for most of the performance changes.

Do Not Install this program if you have Firefox installed.
The Pale Moon icon will launch Firefox when clicked.
Do Not uninstall this if have Firefox installed and choose delete profile and bookmarks as it is not referring to Blue Moon but to Firefox and so it will delete your Profile, bookmarks, passwords, custom stuff as well as break all plug-ins.

Rates a low one for incompatible, lack of info re incompatible with Firefox installed as well as the time spent putting myself back together again.
