    Hi,

This tool pretty much saved me from redoing my server so I thought I would share the steps I went through in both Resizing and Cloning my partition.

I dunno if you are allowed to link to any guides? If not I'll remove them unless there is an easier way for me to import them over here.

    Resizing partition guide: http://draalin.com/using-parted-magic-t ... partition/

    Cloning partition guide: http://draalin.com/using-parted-magic-t ... partition/

    Just wanted to share.

    Thanks

Parted Magic is an invaluable tool in the toolbox of any tech who's worth their mettle. As someone who actually donates to the project on a regular basis--because PM helps save systems I work on--it is well worth what many pay-to-use apps cost. Throw money at Patrick because he is very deserving of your support. He keeps the apps and kernel fairly current and is very responsive to requests for bug fixes or app updates.

I regularly use Parted Magic and find it a very useful tool for both cloning and partition editing.

That said, I had some problems with this 2012-06-26 version. Specifically, the mouse locked up* on the default run-from-RAM GUI setup, the RAID setup could not recognize a common Intel ICH10R RAID configuration which gave a 'device not recognized' error message and I'm still investigating a problem with the alternative graphics menu boot.

Also the cloning tool CloneZilla had problems recognizing some (but not all) large NTFS-formatted 1 and 2TB drives and literally aborted the cloning operation. Note: I also had identical problems with CloneZilla in the earlier 2012-04-21 version (this is currently my normal work version).

The two machines where Parted Magic experienced problems were working perfectly but as a double check I performed the same operations under the same conditions using Acronis True Image 2011 and Acronis experienced no problems recognizing the RAID configuration, nor did it have problems cloning the same large (non-RAID) drives that Parted Magic had problems with. (I should mention however that I've previously found Acronis to be slower at cloning than Parted Magic.)

For the time being, I'll revert back to using the earlier 2012-04-21 Parted Magic (as it does not lock up the GUI).

    This is a great resource.

However the recent flurry of updates has me downloading a rather large file more often than seems wise. Is there a way to generate a binary that is the difference between the latest version and the former. Then Perhaps Some program to patch the last version with the difference file.
    Binary diff
    Windows port
I would imagine the difference is much smaller than the whole ISO.

5 seconds to reduce the size of a partition but 40 minutes to increase another one, which ended with a fail.
Easus partition tool did all that successfully in less than 10 minutes.

Great program, but I can't clone a smaller hard disk to a larger one. Unless the two hard disks have identical capacity I get an error part way through the process.

BTW, why isn't this version on the developer's web site? They only have version 6.3.

Love this thing - used it A LOT.

My only regret is that it doesn't support cloning larger hard disks to smaller ones, even if there is enough space. Add that and it's perfect.

Let's be totally realistic: I have used the latest Parted Magic and I have used the commercial Partition Magic. Parted Magic is NOT a 100% equivalent for Partition Magic. On the other hand, Parted Magic is, in my opinion, the best Linux-based "rescue" boot CD (not just for partition editing) for Windows systems. If you have already tried Linux rescue discs and hate them or if you have been accustomed to Partition Magic, then you probably won't be impressed by Parted Magic. But if you have been using other Linux-based solutions like Trinity and you haven't been spoiled by commercial products, you should really try Parted Magic because I think you will prefer Parted Magic.

This is a solid 5, actually deserves more than 5

For those who wonder how to boot it from usb:

    1) Install grub to your usb disk

    Download from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/grub4dos/

    Read: http://grub4dos.sourcefo...x.php/Grub4dos_tutorial

    2) Boot from USB and test and make sure grub is booting before continuing.

    3) Edit menu.lst file and add (the default menu.lst supplied with grub4dos has an entry for Parted Magic, but it likely wont work as the Parted Magic people removed support/botched support from grub a while back, but my way works):

    title Parted Magic 5.X ISO
    find --set-root pmagic-5.9.iso
    map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 pmagic-5.9.iso (0xff)
    map --hook
    root (0xff)
    chainloader (0xff)

NOTE: Do NOT rename the iso file, leave it as it was when you downloaded it

NOTE 2: You can also run the ISO from a subfolder on your USB disk (i keep a few ISO's in an isos folder), i.e.

    title Parted Magic 5.9 ISO
    find --set-root /isos/pmagic-5.9.iso
    map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 /isos/pmagic-5.9.iso (0xff)
    map --hook
    root (0xff)
    chainloader (0xff)

    4) Boot from usb

    5) Stop whining and being a TOOL on fileforum because you dont know to boot from usb :)

I used this to create a system drive for OSX/Win7 dual boot and it worked perfectly!

Looks like that they wanted to scam off the "Partition Magic" name??!!

I've never seen this company's work before.

Can someone tell me how to make this work from burning to a USB Flash ? I used UltraISO to write to the USB Flash disk but it won't boot. I assume it's an issue with the MBR of the ISO

Anyone know how to make it work from the USB Flash?
