PerfectDisk 2008 Professional Build 61
Publisher's Description:
PerfectDisk redefines enterprise disk defragmentation addressing an issue that Microsoft, in various published artices, states is often the cause of poor system performance on a system. Provides the most comprehensive solution for defragmentation by optimizing virtually every file on the system, including the Master File Table ($MFT), all metadata, paging files, and directories. Patented SMART Placement technology arranges files on a disk to ensure that free space is consolidated and the future rate of fragmentation is minimized.

First of all, that is a very old screenshot, Perfectdisk 2008 looks completely different.
Jkdefrag and others are very good, but they lack certain features that are appealing with Perfectdisk, and they can NOT completely defrag the drive.
Jkdefrag, defraggler etc cannot defrag the MFT, Metadata, pagefile, hibernation file etc etc, nor can they put the files in boot order for faster system startup. These advantages alone make perfectdisk stand above the others. Also perfectdisk can defrag remote computers. Free defragmenters aren't ideal for a business scenerio either.
I use jkdefrag as well myself, I use it on my media drives (but I do an offline defragment for the metadata, mft etc before running jkdefrag). For the main drive, nothing beats perfectdisk. The computer it faster in loading programmes etc due to the abovementioned ordering and system files defragmentation that the others cannot do.
Perfectdisk does a much better job in my opinion that diskeeper as well, and although diskeeper has a boot defrag as well it does not cover metadata.

I'm not sure what kind of drug-induced stupor you need to be in to recommend JkDefrag over PerfectDisk (given that, for one thing, "The "Prefetch\Layout.ini" file is not yet supported").
This version of PD is a step up over the previous, but they still need to bore-down the interface and stop trying to be cutesy with it. And I know the screen shot above does not depict PD 2008.
The defrag engine sucks in terms of I/O impact. Before trying to rely exclusively on StealthDefrag, I tried using rigid schedules. What I found was that when the schedules would run, my computer would slow to an unbearable crawl.
I had none of these problems with O&O Defrag Professional. With O&O, if I happened to be using the computer and intentionally defragging at the same time, it didn't drive me nuts.
Some say that PD can defrag system files that others can't. They're not actually "system files", they're certain obscure bits of metadata. Show me a real reason why this matters. Show me before/after defrag performance data. You can't, unless perhaps you fabricate some contrived, extreme scenario.
Going back to O&O.

I second JkDefrag. $45 for this product? That's nuts. JKDefrag has command line switches and rapidly defrags. It's way better than this product.

"I'm not sure what kind of drug-induced stupor you need to be in to recommend JkDefrag over PerfectDisk" - no wonder the reviewer calls himself/herself 'Undesired Username'; if I ranted like this I think I would like to have an Undesired Username! ;-)
It always puzzles me how a person can become that enraptured about a disk defragmenter (if it was a text editor I could understand :-) ). Either they don't get out enough or they are employees of the product being criticised. Strange behavior.

I own an earlier version of this product but have stopped up-grading to newer releases. While this product is Ok it does not defrag your hard disk any better than either of the following:
JkDefrag - http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ or
Defraggler - http://www.defraggler.com/
Both have a significant additional advantage over PerfectDisk - THEY ARE FREE!

Peter

If NTFS doesn't get fragmented MS wouldn't be bundling DK Lite with their OS, also Mark Russinovich makes pagedefrag and contig for MS, all that means, yes it gets fragmented and performance is affected. PD has been my choice since version 4 and still continues to be my preferred app for defrag with its latest version 2008.
