Picasa automatically finds and organizes all of your pictures including: jpeg, tiff, bmp, psd, and standard camera movie files. Sending pictures with e-mail used to mean five steps just to get it right. Picasa lets you pick the size and then automatically attaches your pictures. Browse through all your pictures and view slideshows of your albums with the click of a button. Enhance, fix red-eye, and even crop without losing data or permanently changing your original picture.

The iPhone of the graphics viewer world. Something simple enough to install on your grandparents' machine. Doesn't skimp on necessary features, reasonably fast, reasonably intuitive, fun features such as image collages etc, and AFAIK the only free viewer on Windows which supports face recognition. Integrates nicely with Picasaweb (far better than Flickr) and even allows your relatives to link into your Picasaweb account then download pictures from your online gallery directly to their Picasa instance for offline viewing or printing. May not be for everyone or have uber-configurability but, like the iPhone, it has its place.

And for the anti-Google brigade - you have the option to not send anon usage statistics to Google when you install it - PLUS nobody's saying you need the internet to use it either. Just firewall off the entire program if that makes you more comfortable. Sigh.

    Key Features of v3.6:
    * Added support for Collaborative Albums. Now you can upload to a friend's album right from Picasa. You can also invite collaborators to your own albums when you're uploading photos or sharing with friends.
    * Added option to share with groups during upload process.
    * Added name tag recommendations when viewing albums or folder in the People Panel.
    * Improved control over name tags: you can remove certain folders from being scanned for faces by toggling face detection for any folder (I guess this means bsagnell will now use it?)
    * Added the ability to create and save custom crop sizes.
    * Added an option to preserve original JPG compression quality when uploading to Picasa Web Albums. This will take up more online storage space, but upgrade prices are now much more affordable.
    * Added option to import photos by date taken, today's date, or a custom folder name. If "date taken" is selected, photos will be automatically organized and saved to separate folders by date.

Having used all versions since the first, I'll pass on this one until face recognition becomes user-selected, not the default. Unless I missed that function?
Otherwise the only photo editing and cataloging program most users will ever need. Version 3 highly recommended.
