Popcorn is an ultra-lightweight POP3/SMTP e-mail client. Being a true client/server application, it does not work in the same way as a typical mail program. This means that you're reading mail from the POP3 server directly, without downloading it to a local mailbox on your PC (you can save mail messages locally if you want to). This makes it ideally suited for "on the road" mail access, and for scanning, reading, and sending mail over slow Internet connections.

Great to see that this is still in development. Brings back fond memories. I'm using it as a portable mail reader on my USB drive. Excellent.

Enough of the grumbles about Popcorn having a paid version. Popcorn is now totally & unequivocably FREE. There was unquestionably an update from version 1.76 to version 1.77 on July 19,2007. I verified this by SHA-1 checksum, and by the version number obtained by using Help>About in the Popcorn GUI. The nature of the changes is explained HERE. Obviously, the programmer changed his about about never updating this program. IMO he just couldn't stand by & desert his "baby girl" while she still had a couple of unmended snags *somewhere in her nylon knickers.* ^_^ Popcorn is a superb minimalist e-mail client. That is all it professes to be, and that is what it is. So small you can run it from a floppy -- but BIG in stability, and fully competent in the functions it offers. I give it a 5 in its own minimalist class, but it must rank 3 against the full-functioned clients such as Courier & The Bat. I averaged the 5 and the 3 to assign a rating of 4.

According to the website "The Popcorn e-mail client is no longer actively developed, updated or supported by Ultrafunk in any way" and that version 1.76 is "unlimited freeware".

No SSL support? No attachment support? An older freeware version of this app that has the same functionality for the most part but doesn't cost $20!! I'd have to say i.Scribe brings more to the table in that price range, small and portable, brings a plugin architecture that allows SSL and attachments etc... Thanks but no thanks on Popcorn!

When this was freeware it is very good. It didn't have all the features you wanted but it was free so you couldn't complain. The author said he had no interest in ever making it shareware. Fair enough he changed his mind it isn't a crime, it is annoying but that is about it. Now for free Popcorn was worth using however for £20 it really isn't. Yes it is a nice program but to justify suddenly charging for it the author should have added support things like SSL, attachments and HTML email (I admit that HTML email would be hard). I don't mind paying for software but I will not pay for something that isn't worth it. A few updates and this program but be the best portable email client available. It is a shame the author doesn't care for his customers enough to update it.
