I don't use these players to "watch" Vid's. My use is solely Pre-Editing.

I don't like this player either, as many of the posters here. One thing, though, needs to be said: it's the only player that actually allows the user to scrub the timeline (backward or foreward) with mostly all major file formats. For people who work in video / graphics field that's a crucial feature. If only Pot Player or any other good player out there would have the same smoothness when it comes to scrub the time line as QT does, I would not install it anymore.

because QT alternative and RealPlayer alternative projects are dead. The developer has gone all opensource and no one has picked up the projects. QuickTime alternative available here and elsewhere is old.

There are newer ver. of available from questionable sites bundled with malware.

FatBastard

I agree with roj.

Quicktime is CRAP even on Mac OSX. It's too big, too slow and has a userinterface from hell. Also the support for different formats is horrible.

Thank god the Quicktime fileformats are playable on other players.

I sometimes install Quicktime on Windows to get the Quicktime plugin but the player totally sux.

In Mac OSX I never use it. I use VLC. Without VLC the Mac would be almost unusable as a mediaplayer.

roj

roj reviewed v7.6.7.1675 on Aug 13, 2010

Why anyone would use this bloated, invasive disaster is beyond human or inhuman understanding. Quicktime Alternative is the intelligent way to go if you wish to view Apple proprietary formats - it strips away the poorly coded dreck and just leaves the raw codecs.

ONE star for the Typical Apple Retroactive Abortion Software Award.

As far as I-tunes, not having an ipod myself, I don't need this. Problems and tasks loaded into memory. msie.exe & others. apple software update gave fatal errors when uninstalling. Running Quicktime and it's sibling iTunes are absolutely one of the best ways to bring a modern computer to it's knees.

I agree with mjm01010101 this monster just takes over your PC like Realplayer but due to the content on the web that requires it we are forced to install on users PCs as bloated corporations only trust bloated products from other bloated corporations and would never even consider something like QT alternative or Real Alternative.

Once brilliant, simple and cheap with endless upgrades thrown in. Now rivals RealPlayer for undesirability on your system. I wish I could install the player to use for video editing since my ****ing Nikon camera insists on taking movies in .MOV format, and I'd like to edit them losslessly, even if I had to pay the pro price (there's nothing else on the market that can do it) - alas, QT wants too big a slice of my PC for that functionality, so I will have to find workarounds. I actually have a Virtual PC with Windows XP SPECIFICALLY for using QT to edit video, so I don't have to have this overwhleming crud on my 'real' PC.

Cutting edge? No!
Delivers unparalleled quality? No!
Honestly, the mov format has nothing on DivX or wmv, accept maybe 3x file size for equivilent quality.
Tons of bloat? Yes!
Huge security hole? Yes!

QuickTime 7.1.6

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 SP4

Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: An implementation issue exists in QuickTime for Java, which may allow reading or writing out of the bounds of the allocated heap. By enticing a user to visit a web page containing a maliciously-crafted Java applet, an attacker can trigger the issue which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking when creating QTPointerRef objects. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi working with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative for reporting this issue."

Good for what it does, but I certainly wouldn't buy the Pro version.

I have to give it a 4 only because you have to buy Pro to watch Fullscreen movie trailers.

Depending on need, you may wish to use the "Quicktime Alternative" instead which I believe allows for Fullscreen. However, if you have the Pro version you can SAVE the movie trailers for later playback which is nice especially for some CPU's which may need VLC to playback the video without stuttering.

Flawed bloat with Security issues going beyond this single patch.

Media players should rarely, if ever, have vulnerabilities. They shouldn't be vulnerable to any security vulns: ever. They are desling with non-interactive formats (whoops mov isn't, there's your first mistake apple,) and therefore quicktime will always be subject to security vulns.

The update model is flawed as well.

Get QT alternative, if you must get anything.

It is bloatware. It's size is not only many times what one would expect from a media application, it does far more than one would like from such an application.

Media applications should, in my opinion:
1. Not Spew their icons all over my desktop.
2. Not Spew icons in my taskbar.
3. Not Spew icons in control panel.
4. Not Take over permissions of other applications without detailed warning and using the most simple of interfaces.
5. Should have a non-intrusive update application.
6. Should be secure from most common vulnerabilities.
7. Should not include itunes by default. What IT team installs itunes+quicktime is asking for headaches.

An Example: Why is Qtime taking over tiff viewing if it cannot handle this function properly! Try and view multi-page images on the USPTO.gov site! They can't. And QT hasn't EVER been able to!

Media player classic FTW.
Quicktime Alternative FTW.
Quicktime Alternative lite FTW.

Oh, and here are the previous batch of security updates apple has failed to disclose:

Firstly, Quicktime isn't bloatware, and who really cares if it is, especially if one has a large hard drive in terms of space?

Secondly, telling people to stay away from one application or another will only make people IGNORE that suggestion and just go ahead and get the application they want.

For me, QT is awesome. I have not had a problem with it at all.. the same with iTunes, and I don't care if it's bundled together. And I don't care whether people like that or not, I will still use an application as I see fit no matter what.

To mjm01010101: who cares? It doesn't matter if you say it's bloatware, because I don't see it as being "bloatware" and I don't care if it is bloatware.

QT 7 for XP does not seem to understand clip-begin and clip-end times correctly in certain sequences done in SMIL format.
Otherwise, I find QT 7 to be an improvement over QT 6, except for one other personal preference, which is the chapter drop-down menus in QT 6 scaled to content, while in QT 7 the drop-down menu is a fixed width when showing the current selection playing.

I can't believe Apple is persisting with this line of awful, bloated software. I hope that they learn from the increasing popularity of QuickTime Alternative and realize people don't want to be forced into an awful media player. Just relent and release a public codec, Apple. The world will thank you for it.

Wow Quicktime itself is over 12megs now!? Might as well just download iTunes, it comes bunlded with the latest Quicktime. Quicktime is a necessary evil, especially if you watch movie trailers. Aside from playing the proprietary .MOV format I find very little use for it, same goes for iTunes. The software is totally bloated and performs poorly in Windows. I'm sure the Mac versions are better, but as if I would ever buy one of those :P

For what it does, QT does it well. .MOV and MP4 are both high-quality formats with which I never have any trouble.

I like this program because it doesn't strive to be an all inclusive media center, but just a simple quicktime player. It has never supported the wide range of formats out there and I doubt it ever will. It does seem to have out of memory errors when I have several IE windows open with QT video files embedded within each for some reason. This problem has plagued me since the 6 series.

Aires, export to AVI is there still.

really is this the worst movie player ever ot what?! its been said a lot of times but.. it just SUX!
thank god we have mpc and qt codecs.... = quicktime alternative!
i really hate this program... 12mbs for nothing! hate it...
real player is much better... real one might be huge (;p) but it offers more than qt. Still, i prefer mpc.
And the thing is i dont think there is anyone out there who would prefer qt or real over media player classic! lets try to make mpc more poppular guys..

QT 6.5.1 removed the option to save a file as an avi. So I'll give 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 a one star rating and stick to 6.5 until it's reintroduced thanks.

Now what does this beast add? Lossless? Got ape and flac - the de facto standards. Better AAC? Got ogg and no DRM besides. iTunes junk? You're kidding right? I'm not stupid enough to pay for downloaded music that costs the same as lossless content on CD while being lossy. New video codecs? Got enough of those with DivX, XviD, On2CP3, et. al. Thanks but Quicktime Alternative is a much more sane approach.

Hi! I'd like to point out that like several other people here, I would highly recommend QuickTime Alternative instead of the original package that this is.
I did try QuickTime several versions from 3.x up to 6.x, and I was disappointed with it. Not only is it slow (I won't say it's bloated since it doesn't seem to offer that many options), but on several occasions it proved to be unstable (I do not suggest that this is the case for everybody, but on the machines I tried it on, the 6.x builds happened to be indeed unstable).
I understand that QuickTime Alternative might not be 100% legal (albeit there doesn't seem to be any legal actions going on), but from my experience, it beats QuickTime hands down. Oh, and there's only a free version available, no pay-30-bucks-for-the-pro licence.

For those who are having problems stopping the "Quick Time Task" from continuously inserting itself you the list of your startup programs, you might want to try Mike Lin's FREEware "Startup Control Panel" available from the FileForum's as version 2.7 and from Mike's site as version 2.8. Be sure to just deselect the startup file and NOT to delete it. Seems to work just fine for me.

jpmccord

jpmccord reviewed v6.3 on Jun 3, 2003

Quicktime is a good program, but it lacks the features that other Windows multimedia (specifically video) players have. Apple needs to make its Quicktime video available as a codec download separately from Quicktime pro -- older versions, any way. It is silly that after all these years I must not only install a player, but use that specific player, just to watch movies of a particular file type. (Of course, that said, I think Windows Media Player should come with a simple standard DV decoder...)

Anacific

Anacific reviewed v6.3 on Jun 3, 2003

If only there was another way to watch QuickTime videos :[ Even though it's stable and pretty and all that, it's still bloated to the point where it takes forever to start this behemoth on my 1.2 GHz TB. I want to watch a video, not some silly eye-candy (which can be accomplished a lot better with Style XP. I'm not sure why it takes so long for this to start though. Maybe it has nothing to do with the GUI....

On the Windows platform Windows Media Player 9 is a much better program. I can't say anything about the Apple version of Quicktime, but on Windows its not that good. I have tried Quicktime numerous times during every release since its inception, but even now I don't think it's a very good program. One example of my beef: compare the window resizing options and functionality (particularly fullscreen) between Quicktime 6 and WMP9.

Quicktime is absolutley a great program for all video formats. You have to remember that this isn't a media player like Windows Media Player. It strictly focusus on Video because Appple uses itunes as its media player. Apple is by far much better than windows. Ive tried both and there is no way i would go back to windows. Quicktime runs beatifully and is easy to use. Keep up the good work!

Kessen: true quality is better than Windows Media 7 but not 8! QuickTime is nice, it has good quality but the player is not as good as Windows Media Player (6.4 and 7/8) in my opinion. WMP7/8 has never crashed on me but QT5/6 has. Also WMV8 is amazing, also QT6 is no way near the quality of DivX, obviously you have so badly made DivX rips! Gets 4 as it is ok but not the best. Check out DivX or WM8

First off this is a "Technology Preview" - NOT a final finished shipping product! Speed, load, memory, etc. those are all the *last* to be addressed in a development cycle. Wait for a release candidate before commenting on them, for now the issue is basic functioniality.

That said this runs pretty well. Again, it's likely to get polished before release but on the couple of Mac & PC platforms I've tried this on it works fine. Various speed machines running a couple permutations of Win9x & NT-derivatives, MacOS & MacOS X it runs decently on all of them.

The interface is no worse then any other player's out there, the functionality is the greatest. It speaks virtually everything out there, includes Apple's licensed Soronson codec as well as the first full implementation of Mpeg4 ("Divx :-)" and others are partials.) SMIL is there, RTSP streaming, basic editing, even Flash 5 & Jpeg2000. It can interoperate with Java and seems a team player with other applications.

Best feature? That anywhere there is support for Quicktime there's now Mpeg 4 along with all of the other QT6 codecs, file formats, etc. Pretty kewl. Also that the server is free, open source, so far requires no licensing (we'll see what comes of the Mpeg 4 talks) and supports unlimited streams.

Oh, and yeah, the "Pro" version will require a license. Tough boogers - if you want all of the goodies the basic player is free but the Pro will cost money. And yes, if you had a license for 5 then apparently you'll require a new license for 6. Actually I don't know that this will be true: In the past Apple has allowed licenses from one rev past to work on the next, but no further. Thus v.3 licenses worked in 3 & 4 but not 5, v.4 licenses worked in 4 & 5, I don't beleive that any final statement has been made if v.5 licenses will carry forward into v.6 (but of course not ones from before 5.) That Apple would not honor all previous licenses is no suprise - no other like vendor offers free other upgrades between full version jumps. And yes, this is a significent upgrade.

So my review - a big thumbs up. So far it doesn't appear broken in any big way. While not as snappy as I'd like it on the low end boxes it isn't awful (and certianly less of a pig already then the more recent WMP releases). If anyone can point to anything not working please post it, and fer heavens sake include the platform and OS you're on. In the meantime I'm looking forward to seeing the final release soon, I'm betting at MacWorld NY in mid-July.

QuickTime (the format) is cool. While I don't like the QuickTime Player, there's also the recource-friendly browser-plugin. If anybody does not have enough recources for the player, just associate QuickTime files with IE and use the browser-plugin.

Does play Movies. But sucks up the machine. Also takes too long to load. I have played movies faster with BeOS on a much slower machine, even multiple movies at the same time.
Also Apple's Update idea "if your pro key doesn't work buy a new one" is ridiculous. Not even an ugrade available.
Do I really need to have a Dual-P IV @ 2 GHz + 1 GB RAM + lots of HDDs to play just a tiny movie??

Yet another lousy player... of coures this time its a shame, since the underlying technology of quicktime is really good. Yet they put it in a huge and absolutly horrifically ugly player (doesn't anybody make normal decent looking software anymore?) that tries to take over extensions and browser configurations all over the place. I'm still trying to undo the damage it caused to my configuration.

Here's a tip for the developers... *ask* me if I want you to take over everything.
